Curtain Couture, Camping & The Secret Of Eternal Youth

What do you get if you take a 1960s curtain, some left over pompom braid and a particularly dull 0-0 football game?

Chuck in a generous helping of Lidl's white rum and you could end up with one of these - a pompom-tastic cover-up.

Not that my Kate Moss bumble bee hot pants need to be covered up. They've been a regular feature on my blog for almost as long as I've been writing it - not bad for something that cost me a quid from a car boot sale five years ago.

A week today we'll (hopefully) be pitched up at Glastonbury making a dent in the cider mountain. Yes, I did say pitched up - we're camping! Getting our tickets in the resale meant that the campervan pitches were all sold out. How good would it be if this bit of kit was our home for the week? Sadly it's not, instead it'll be Kinky's new selling space for the remainder of the festival season. Luckily a friend is loaning us his tent. I've just got to work out how to condense my Glasto wardrobe into a bag small enough.

Did I mention eternal youth? I had several comments recently remarking that I'm getting younger (flatterers!) My secret is snake venom!  I spotted this eye cream in Body Care a while ago and, once I'd established it was cruelty (and reptile) free, gave it a whirl. It was so good that I went straight back to buy the serum, which is equally amazing (which I wear under my trusty Superdrug Vitamin E Radiance Moisture Cream). The eye cream is £1.99 and the serum is £3.49 and yes, I bought it with my own money. You won't find any dodgy product placement here.

Other than my Barry M lippy I'm bare-faced today. I'm still not sure what I'm going to wear to the National Vintage Awards tomorrow night (I've whittled it down to two options) but doing my eyes after a couple of days of wearing nothing will make my face feel dressed up if nothing else!

Thanks for voting and for all your support. I'll be back at the end of the week to share the final result.

See you soon!

  1. Love the curtain cover-up! What great fabric. And a flash of your bumble bee shorts is always welcome!
You look gloriously fresh-faced and youthful, who knew snake venom could be so effective?! Blimey, spending your own cash, darling - not a "the lovely people at blah blah blah sent me..." in sight!
Now, I am hoping that you are the toast of the evening at the Vintage Awards and of course you will be a winner. (Tell them I will be straight down to kick some arse if you're not, that'll scare them.) You will look a million dollars whatever you wear, so take a ton of photos, we're all rooting for you!
    Love you! xxxxx

  12. Speaking as one who went to church last Sunday in a me made duvet cover maxi skirt (and delighted in telling all of the skirts admirers that it was fashioned out of a £2.99 Sally Army duvet cover), I totally love your curtain dress lol. I will be putting that serum on my next shopping trip list :)

  16. I've often admired your skin and how you manage to look so youthful. Not a blemish or wrinkle in sight, you've obviously taken better care of it than I did mine. Never heard of Body Care though. Looking forward to seeing the award photo's and know you will look stunning whatever you decide to wear. Loving the latest curtain couture, the pom-pom trim is the business. Is it Glasto already? Where has this year gone? xxxx

  28. I have a tent like that. I had a trade stand at Truckfest, by day it was my shop and by night it was my boudoir. I took a sunlounger bed, I kept dry though a horrendous storm in the middle of the night. Just be sure to lift everything off the ground, just in case. I had a makeshift roof rack on my estate car to transport the long poles.

  54. I thought you were going to say camping and festivals were the secret of eternal youth Vix, I have a friend who does both too, and although she's near enough my age and has four kids, she looks really young, so I'm sure your lifestyle helps. Feeling very old and decrepid today after seeing some horrific photos of myself so I'm definitely going to try out the venom potions! Good luck in the competition and have a fantastic time at Glastonbury! xx

  60. Looking lovely as always dear Vicky. I always adore your outfits, and must confess, I've tried some of that snake venom for myself. I'm constantly trying new things on my pathetically, uber-sensitive skin, and the venom didn't make me come over all blotchy and sore, so thumbs up from me.

Good luck at the awards xx

  61. What's body care? I've never heard of it or I'd be down there tomorrow! I am after a new eye cream.

  62. Best of Luck tonight, not that you need it ;) Thanks for sharing your skin secrets - I think it's a bit too late for me, but you look so fresh-faced, and totally gorgeous, without makeup. I can't get away without any colour or my face just disappears.

Smashing curtain cover-up - I would love a dress that shape (and a little bit longer).

  65. Ahh, the great thing about a sewing machine. It's ready to go when you feel the creative urge. I just love your new cover up! Reminds me of the cute things my grandmother made us in the 60's. Some cover ups were made from towels. Bell sleeves, fringe, and all.
    Have fun camping!

  68. I'd anticipated a pitch for pear cider as the elixir of eternal youth; plus yoga, vegetarianism and month-long sojourns in Goa. Instead, we have snake venom. ?!

Vix, one looks at your fabulous bod in those bumblebees and accepts the recipe. If you promise no slithery serpents were harmed, one shall go forth forthwith and seek snake venom...

One wonders what sort of acceptance speech you've prepared for the first place award thingy.

  69. Alright youth? You look as fresh faced as a 12 year old! Snake venom? Is that real or a brand name?! Actually, do you know what? I don't care, if it works I'm getting me some! After all, we are practically twins. Can't let the side down. Don't you look lovely in your comfy cover up? Great design and fabric. Looks really wearable for summer and I like it over those micro shorts! I need more pompoms in my life. Might have to pop over to Walsall on a Wednesday, my stocks are running low. I'm a bit excited by that tent actually, you could practically live in that. xxxxx

  70. 100 years ago, my parents had the fabric of your dress in red hanging on the kitchen window ... i loved it, i was three ... you found the perfect use for this fabric! absolutely adorable!

  71. LOVE that new dress, pompoms are the frosting on the cake of cuteness! Best way to work, with a bit o' rum in the tum!;)

Hope it's dry for your camping experience, seen those muddy shots and hate to think of you camping in it. But, the kids do it here all the time and make the best of it. My godson's friend recently make a huge geodome for 25 of their friend to sleep under and I was impressed.

And, thanks for the beauty tips, will have to look for them. You certainly are a good example of their power!:)
