What To Wear To A Jumble Sale....

...if you're me!
(If you're not then wear what the hell you want to, I'm a blogger not a style expert).

Yep, its that time of the month again, sorting through the stained undies, greasy pots & pans, out of shape Primark tee shirts & rancid shoes in preparation for tomorrow's jumble sale.

Its not all rubbish though, these are today's finds!

(Clockwise from top left): 1970s Spanish souvenir key holder and flamenco dancer fan; 1970s bed cover for Gilbert's festival season; an odd vintage cruet; 1960s handbag mirror; French star shot glasses; 1960s ice bucket (in its original box); Plastic OBD (obligatory blogger deer).

Clockwise from top left: 1960s gold evening pumps; 1980s blingy festival chic jacket by Ciro Citterio (remember them, fellow British 40-somethings?); A pair of Harris Tweed caps; 1960s mustard shift dress; Levis denim jacket; Waxed shooting gillet; 1970s Reldan of London blouse; 1980s Aran sweater ( a perennial hipster favourite) ; Pink 1960s shift dress; Ex-army camo jacket; 1960s swimsuit; Hand made wool shawl.

There's absolutely shed loads left for the general public. Donations include everything from leather fronted tee shirts to dresses with exposed zips, dip-dyed leggings and Ikat prints - a sure sign they are no longer in vogue with the Black Country hipsters. There's Burberry, Ted Baker, Yves St Laurent and Gant menswear, Clarks' & Hotter shoes, Jaeger and Monsoon with the tags still attached and Jasper Conran bags. Some people really do have more money than sense.

I can't understand for the life of me why anyone would buy new clothes when there's so much available for a few pence second hand. I do mean pence, too. The prices tomorrow are 40p for a top, 60p for a pair of trousers and 80p for a dress and people will still moan, say its too expensive and try to walk out without paying.

1960s maxi dress (Lily McMuffins Vintage Boutique), 1960s glass collar (£1, Newport Vintage Fair), a stack of bangles and a tiger print bag (courtesy of the divine Helgita)

Notice that ridiculously big smile today? There's very good reason behind it. One of our mates has only gone and scored us some f*cking Glastonbury festival tickets. To say I'm excited would be an understatement. I'm going to crack open a cider later and get into practice for June.

See you soon!

PS Check out darling Curtise's blog post (she's my campaign manager) and vote Vix PLEASE!

  10. If you get famous enough whether you're style expert or queen of vintage may be less of a factor than your admiring star-struck fandom wanting to emulate your styles (and perhaps hear Jon playing that Fender Stratocaster). That 1960s maxi dress is a beauty.
From your photo-collages of the day's finds, they all look like they would be someone's treasure. I'm a bit partial to the plastic Bambi OBD, the key-holder, flamenco dancer fan and bed cover in the first collage and the pink 1960s shift dress in the second. The Levis denim jacket looks a lot like my own. They last a long time.
Have a fabulous time at the Glastonbury Festival.

  11. Glastonbury tickets, hurray! So pleased you got some, no wonder you're on the cider!
Your jumble sale finds are always fabulous. Our local jumbles don't produce anything like that stuff, you are lucky. The bedspread and ice bucket have caught my eye, the 1960s shifts are lovely, and yes, I certainly do remember Ciro Citterio!
I never see that quality of jumble, but I do see some posh labels in the chazzas, it amazes me what people give away. No argument from me about secondhand shopping - you'd be crazy not to!
You really do look happy in these pics, love the frock and the bag from Helga is a beauty. And sunshine, hasn't it been lovely today?
I hope I have put the fear of God into everyone sufficiently so they vote, several times over, from all the email addresses they can muster. You don't want to hear me swear, do you? More than usual, I mean...
    Love yooooou! xxxxx

  13. I voted for you once can I vote again? I am not you, dear Vix, but I would definitely wear that dress. I would also very much like Gilbert's bed cover. Lucky Gilbert! I nearly gagged over stained and greasy undies. Ewwwww!

I suppose not everyone has access to such a bounty of second hand goods, but it is amazing and delightful how much can be purchased second hand (not for pence where I live but still pretty decent prices compared with new. I love the thrill of the hunt and knowing I won't see my outfits walking down the street on other bodies. I also love that my home does not look like a spread from a catalogue and is very uniquely me.
Very exciting about Glastonbury! can't wait to see pictures!

  14. Well done your friend for getting hold of Glastonbury tickets! Mmm, also spent the morning sorting through donations, but at the local charity shop. I wasn't as nicely attired as you though, love those brown and yellow/orange prints! Too right about high street prices, the fab chazza bargains I've had already this month are amazing. Your campaign manager is doing a fine job too!

  15. Hi there!! Wow amazing finds as usual, you are so right about shopping the jumbles and charity shops, the prices are so low and you can get awesome things if you're prepared to look! Fab news on the Glastonbury tickets too well done!! xx

  16. Your frock is gorgeous! Glad you got some tickets, what good friends you have. I am always baffled that people spend huge amounts of money on things only to throw them out, unworn with price tags still attached. But it is good for us second hand shoppers!!

  17. So true: "Some people really do have more money than sense." But I appreciate them giving their stuff to the thrifts! Love your dress and gorgeous hair, and congrats on the tickets. xox

And to find such splendour at the jumble?! The cherry on top. Although, you are the sherry really. Or perhaps the golden toy!!! Scrummy outfit, and perfect for rummaging amongst Black Country Grannies!
    Rowr!

    And some will complain ?
Today I've been to another charity shop than the usual one , and most of the stuff was priced way too high , anything but charity !!
Love the bed cover , your feline print bag , the rainbow bangles and the sunny smile you're offering us ...

  21. Congrats on scoring the tickets- you're going to have a blast dear festival goddess. And you are so right about the sense- to shop less in general, re-use what you can and buy secondhand first is the best way to go- you and Jon are stylish proof of that!

    ReplyDelete
  22. How exciting! I can't wait to see what you wear : )

I'm dying over that pink shift dress.

I want to be there and score some Ted Baker.

This dress is gorgeous on you. Looks like you have some lovely weather there too.

I've voted for you and will be sharing via FB too. I hope you win! Promise you won't forget your friends when you're famous though...okay?

  23. a sort of solid color dress? That's rare for you, it's very pretty. Great haul, all that cool stuff makes up for sorting through all the crap, right? I found brand new with tags stuff at the By the Pound thrift store, people be crazy. But thank you for donating all your new stuff!

    Yeah, for getting tickets

  24. When you said it was that time of month again and you were sorting through stained undies and more, I was wondering where this post was going. Thankfully it was to show off this fab finds. I love both the 60's shift dresses and the green swimsuit of course. I love your maxi dress oranges, yellows and browns sure are one of my favourite colour combos amongst many others.

  25. I've never been to a festival, but it sounds like fun! The last concert I went to was KISS, back in the 90s and it was just okay.
Love all your great finds, especially the shift dresses and your whole outfit! :)

  26. love to see that big glastonbury smile on you :-)

cool finds as ever! you have a very good sense to find the special items. when i see the loads of almost new thrown away things i ask myself where is the f.. crisis???

  27. I'm so happy you're off to Glasto, for some strange reason I assumed you had tickets - they should give them to you for free after all, they need you there to show the kids how to stand out from the crowd instead of wearing cut-offs, fluro tops and orange spray tans. Love Helga's bag and your divoon frock, while Gilbert is lucky to get a fancy new cover. The green swimsuit - omfg! That's gonna fly out of your shop!!!! Don't even get me started on the shit people buy new and never wear. xoxo

  28. Eeeek, you got tickets! SOOOO pleased. It would have been a travesty for Glastonbury to have gone ahead without you there.
Coveting your dress. What a great array of jumble treasure too, especially the 60s swimming costume.

  33. Lucky you Glastonbury - it will be so magic. Jumble sales used to be a way of life for me growing up, Mum took me every weekend - my first leather boots as a teenager, velvet biba dress, just remembered all those great teen finds I made - where have I been the last 40 years!

  34. That bed cover is fantastic! I am sorry to say I don't know what's Glastonbury - but I am happy for you nevertheless! :) You look gorgeous and colorful, as always!

I can't believe people complain about such prices... what?! I love old stuff, but I have to say I love new stuff too. Forgive me, all right? :)

Justin voted for you yesterday. You've got some perfect campaign manager there! :)

We are all intrigued by that Tweedy Man by now.

    Much love and hugs!

  35. I wonder that people can say "expensive" for something with the price less than 1 pound. You look stunning as always, in this maxi dress and with the wide smile on your face. I have no idea what Glastonbury festival is but since it brings so much happiness on your face, I guess it is something worthy.

  36. Hello Vix,

Well, first we must say that Curtise is doing a fabulous job as your campaign manager. She sent us into the labyrinth of the Vintage Awards site and we are absolute novices at this vintage business. We have our fingers crossed for your victory!

Your outfit really does bring out the sunshine. We could do with you here in Budapest to brighten up an exceedingly grey and dreary day. The bangles are particularly fabulous..........reminiscent of Nancy Cunard......perfect!

  37. I do love jumble sales, but there odn't seem to be any local to me at the moment. I love all your bargains, brilliant!

Hooray for Glasto tickets! You'll have an amazing time, I'm sure.

    Have a lovely day xx

  42. Ooh brilliant on the Glasto tickets - I've never been and always wanted to!

I've managed to score an awesome all-dayer mini-festival with 90s bands though, and that's next week in Manchester. Huzzah!

I wrote a poem ages ago about being a fashion womble, which your mention of out of shape Primark tee-shirts reminded me of. (that's here if you're interested http://www.writeoutloud.net/public/blogentry.php?blogentryid=27813)

Seem to have lost you lately... I think Blogger is playing up!

P.S.I remember Ciro Citterio - I used to walk past its mens shop and look at all the suits with revulsion. Ciro Cittero equalled gelled hair, gold chains, white shirts and loafers...vom!

  60. You do have a lovely smile in these photos, not that your smile isn't always lovely, but obviously the thoughts of Glasonbury are adding an extra twinkle in your eye.

Gah, how can people complain about prices like that! Obviously they are cranky cows that just love to complain about everything. Damn, I would love to go to a jumble sale over there. I have voted for you doll, of course.

  61. Yay for getting Glastonbury tickets! What a great friend you have. You have my vote for the blog award too x

  62. Nice finds! I am a bad blogger, lacking a single deer figurine. I did find myself a cute rabbit this week though (plus a whack of other goodies) while visiting my parents. One consistent thing my mother and I always do when I'm there is hit up all the excellent thrift shops in their town. That said, as much as I searched, there wasn't a real vintage scrap of clothing to be found. I'm not sure what happens to the donated vintage clothes the shops receive but they never ever seem to hit the racks. So I'm most impressed with the clothes you found, especially that gorgeous mustard shift.

And as always, you look terrific in what you've got on in these photos. xo

  63. Great look ,great finds, best wishes x.

  64. Woop woop! Glasto!
Jumbly prices tend to be a lot higher here and the stock not as interesting. Boo!

  65. How on earth did they manage to magic them up? That's amazing. You must be grinning from ear to ear. Can't be long now. And honestly, the stuff you get from the jumble is beyond belief. I think you must have lucky juice running through your veins. Those shift dresses look fab, and of course, the vintage Spanish tat is excellent. Was that dress a gift? It looks lovely on you. I'm rather partial to those dresses which are part block colour, part groovy print. This sunshine is heavenly. My garden is full of flowers already. Never known it before. Enjoy your curry tonight.
