I've Bin Busy - The Bollywood Makeover

I know, I know, in the grand scheme of things there's little in life less mundane than a waste paper bin but the one in our bedroom irks me each time I look at it, shabby 1950s roses just aren't my thing.

Undeniably useful and stupidly cheap (I bought a pair of them for 20p from a jumble sale), yesterday I decided it was high time the damned thing got a makeover.

Using my best ever find from Poundland - a £25 coffee table book of Bollywood movie posters ( I was hyperventilating when I bought this, I'd lusted after it at Mumbai airport for hours),

I scanned, cropped and printed off some suitably groovy vintage images, including ultimate bikini-clad babe, Sharmila Tagore, in An Evening In Paris.

I glued the images to the outside of the bin, leaving them to dry overnight.

Then I sealed the outside with a coat of varnish.

Finally I glued some leftover Indian pom pom braid to the top and ta-dah!

A Bollywood-tastic bedroom bin fit to grace any retro-lovin' babe's boudoir at a total cost of absolutely nothing.

I blame the gorgeous Suzanne for this creative madness, earlier this week she'd commented: I've decided you are a vintage wizard. I could give you an old tin can, some bobby pins and a straw hat and a piece of frill from an old apron you'd make that work too. I couldn't oblige with the rest of the list but I reckon the old tin bin counts.

We're packed and raring to go selling at Moseley's Vintage & Retro Fair on Sunday (Birmingham's hippest suburb). Have a fab weekend and see you on the other side!

  24. OMG! ha ha! I LOVE it! The images you got for this are so fabulous! You need your own cable DIY show. I just know you'd be brilliant at it.

I also adore your little make-up nook with the army of fluffy poodles looking down and admiring you in your radiant orchid nightie and fluffy neon mules.

Just looking at that space makes me want to play dress-up.

Every little corner in your house is a mini art installation and says something about you.

Good luck at the fair. I'm sure you'll do well.

  43. I think someone should do a coffee table book about you! I'd hyperventilate over that! The pictures of you, your house and all your creative crafty projects, there would certainly be plenty of material. This project is amazing and typical of you, because (a) you have the inspiration and (b) you have all the materials to hand and (c) it cost nowt! Respect is due. You look so wonderful in your boudoir with your pink nighty and your orange slippers. There's no room at the inn for mundane is there? Have a fun weekend with Kinky Melon! Lots of love xxxxx

  45. I'm a sucker for vintage 50's chintz so I'd have bitten your hand off for that bin as it was but I love the creativity behind this. Such a great idea. Anyone could pick up a £1 Hannah Montana bin from Poundland and cover it with the images of their choice. You've inspired me to make one of these for the baby's room! Btw, I love your vanity corner xxx

  46. I LOVE the look and colour of your vintage nylon nightie! The slightly puffy ruffled short sleeves, ruffle at the hem, the lacy ornamentation, the sheen of the fabric and that colour are all wonderfully feminine.
You did a brilliant job of utilising the Bollywood movie poster images turn your waste paper bins into vintage artistic decor.
