The First Car Boot Sale of 2013 - What Vix Bought!

Ever since watching Argentinian thriller, The Secrets In Their Eyes, I've had a fancy for a yellow skinny ribbed polo neck, just like Soledad Villamil wore in the 1970s flashbacks.

What was the first thing I spotted at Saturday morning's car boot sale? Yep, the perfect 1970s sweater peeking out from a pile of mediocre high street tee shirts.

If I had a quid for everyone who commented about my groovy colour scheme today I'd be able to buy you all a drink.

Glitzy owl ring from the gorgeous Em, wooden rectangle ring, made by Mum in the 1960s, middle ring from a car boot sale

This 1960s copper pendant was another car boot find. Bastard massive, innit?

This humongous 1960s copper hoop earrings were a gift from the rather wonderful Pao.

We've several 1970s rotary dial phones but not a wall-mounted one so Jon was very pleased to snap this one up for £4.

I couldn't resist snaffling this 1970s nylon quilted housecoat. My Mum had a turquoise version when I was growing up.

This daisy trimmed 1960s bridesmaid's dress had a horrible heavy-duty lining and sadly, an even more horrible hole in the skirt. I unpicked the lining and chopped the skirt and now I've a sweet satin mini perfect for Spring. Not bad for 50p!

I snaffled this array of pretty frocks, too. They'll be making their way on to the Kinky Melon rails at this weekend's vintage fairs.

1970s polo neck (50p, car boot sale), St Michael paisley bell bottoms (part of a 1960s trouser suit from the fabulous Curtise), River Island stack-heeled leather boots (£1.50, Salvation Army), 1960s suede eyelet waistcoat (Xmas present from Liz), 1970s faux tortoiseshell sunglasses (20p car boot sale last year), 1950s leather holdall (40p, jumble sale)
I was worried we might have forgotten how to buy at a car boot sale, it's been months but we were fine, our rummaging and haggling ability was as good as ever! Here's to a long, dry and sunny Summer so they'll be loads more.

See you soon.

  1. Groove, groovier, grooviest, grooviest-est! Sounds like a guru manual. Absolutely. I have also been craving a bright turtleneck. No freaking wonder. Your bell bottoms would certainly keep you elevated all day. Glad you scored at the sale. I have never seen a phone like that - I would have snapped it up too. Fantastic makeover of the maxi to mini.

  2. Those pants are so so yummy and that vest!!!! I think this is one of the few times I have ever seen you in a sweater like that, it looks great with all your other bits. I bet you were leaving a trail of smiles wherever you went! How could you and Jon ever loss the "gift" of spotting and getting sweet deals, it's in your blood I'm sure of it!

That pink nylon robe is especially yummy and I'm convinced now that my own Mom never owned anything worth remembering, how sad huh. Wait there was one floral velvet vest I did like, but that's all I can recall.

Hi kittie cat! Speak soon sweetie, I need some happiness today!
XXOOO I'll get the time right today and won't make you wait an hour. LOVE YOU!!!!

  3. I think I had the teenaged girl version of that housecoat and a matching bedspread, pre-duvet era.

Glad to see you have some great weather at last.

It's such a pickmeup to get a compliment from a stranger. I got one today and I'm still smiling.

    Good hunting!

  7. Huge envy here for your boot sale finds. Boot sales are very thin on the ground in this area (and those that are on are impossible to get to without a car,) boo hoo!! I'm gonna miss my boot sale fix this coming summer, that's for sure.

Looooooove that beautiful leather bag you're holding.

  9. Ah, the color scheme is gorgeous, indeed! :D You look spectacular in that beautiful yellow turtleneck; love the vest on top. And the pants are the niftiest, of course! SO cool!

I am obsessed with that incredible massive pendant. And the ring that your mother made is just lovely! How unique. It was the first thing I spotted! :D Fabulous frock finds, too! Glad you had a great time! XOXO

p.s. You worked absolute magic w/ that bridesmaid's dress. It's perfect now!

  12. How do you do it? I have a positive hatred of polo necks and yet I think you look utterly amazing in this one! Such a brilliant colour for spring (or indeed any time of the year when you want some colour!)

  13. What great stuff! Can't believe you got that blower for four quid and love the yellow polo, 50p! (I'm screeching with disbelief) Love today's outfit, those trews are so groovy and OMG I had a dressing gown just like yours in mauve, I'd forgotten about it till now. Your bootfair buying skills are still in tact I'd say.

  15. It must be fate! Love the colourful outfit, especially the crazy trousers! I still think the West Midlands is a Bermuda Triangle of vintage clothing - there's hardly anything old at bootsales here (and I know I'd spot things if they were there)!

  16. PS The green number is far more you as a mini!

Wow--your new teeal satin maxi is awesome--love it!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, like you and Jon were ever going to lose the car boot knack! You've still got it, darling!
I don't think I have EVER seen you in a polo neck jumper before. Knowing your knitwear aversion, it's quite a surprise, but of course you are rocking it, and the colour combo is divinely bright. Bastard massive pendants are quite the thing, I believe, and double as a handy weapon, should the need arise for a bolas.. You've got a horse (is it? Or a donkey, or a large dog?) and I've got a crab. Mmm, that doesn't sound right, but I've got Cancer sounded even worse....Oh shit, you know what I mean!
Wonderful booty, naturally - so many frocks and that fab wall phone. Quilted housecoats, there's a blast from the past - Tania needs one to put over her sexy nightie, so as not to inflame the milkman any further.
First of the year and Vix's booty is looking GOOD! xxxxxx

  24. I'm pretty sure I had a quilted housecoat like that when I was a teenager too. That is such a happy colour combo you're wearing! You probably made the day brighter for everyone at the car boot sale. I love rotary dial phones so I would have grabbed the wall mount model for sure.

  25. Oh I do love a bit of ribbed polo action, you look all sunshiny and beautiful. I'm totally digging your pendant and I just love the green nail polish. Always beautiful Vix. X

  28. WOW! Groovy is right! That outfit is insane! And you look so adorable in the pink housecoat. Nice rescue on that satin dress. Where would we be without our sewing machines?

We referred to those ribbed turtlenecks as "poor boy sweaters" back in their day; don't know how they got that name. I just know I loved them too.

And what a HAUL! Kinky Melon will be rockin' for sure at your upcoming shows. Best of luck to you. :)

  29. I love your bag so very much, and that green dress is far better now you've shortened it. Love that other green maxim dress for your rails too. Xx

  32. Yes! Another of my favourite post and finds 'Vix's guide to the galaxy and CAR boot sales' should be a good second choice for the title! Your turtleneck and the groovy printed pants are too great to belong to this world! I love the dresses and your new house coat is lovely!! The green dress with the daisies is very pretty too and it looks much better with the shorter lenght! I'm hypnotized by your beautiful wooden rings , everything is just perfect!
    Lots of love xxxxxxxxx

  34. What a happy, pretty outfit Vix - I love the colour combo and, well, every detail (still crushing on the bag). I never had a chance to do a car boot sale in the UK during my short residency there last year - they look like the prices are way better than the vide greniers here. Great haul! Xoxo

I see you're sporting your Freckleface mug too! xxxx

  38. As if you'd leave a car boot sale without all the best stuff!
Don't you just love it when you want something and then it appears? It's so exciting, even when you've had to wait years (like the halter top you couldn't afford first time around).

I'm itching to get to my first car boot sale of the year this weekend. I'd be happy to come home with one of the things you find.

That dressing gown is nice enough to wear to the shop - go on, I dare you!

    Farling brillant look, this!
And jaysus, your scores! I adore the bridesmaids frock, the hole was probably from some drunken uncle's willy during a hedge tryst...you've improved upon it wonderfully! the little daisy trim across the boobs is divoon!
SO pleased you guys haven't lost your car boot sale mojo, I would have fainted if you had!

  47. Just what I needed today - you looking like sunshine itself. Don't you just love it when you desire something, and there it is. Ribbed knits are the best and I bet the quality is better than any new turtleneck. Don't knock anyone out with that zebra pendant. Great bridesmaid's dress transformation.

  63. Look at you! I love this outfit. That is the perfect yellow sweater. And the green dress is also wonderful.

I can only imagine a car boot sale would be where people with goods to sell, pull up their cars at a certain meeting spot and set up a booth. Obviously I've never been to one but boy, do they sound like fun. You got some excellent stuff.

  64. Oh I do love it when the car boots start up again ... I'm on number 8 this year already. You're looking fab as ever and I love that phone ... not so keen on the enema pots though ... at least they don't still have their rubber hoses ... he he!!! M x

  83. Another great post Vix! I love polo necks and I love yellow so that jumper is a winner all round. And that satin dress is gorgeous, anything with daisies appeals to me and it looks so cute shortened like that. The last dress in your finds for your shop actually looks a lot like a Topshop top I saw online this week and I was thinking how nice it was. My mum had a pink quilted dressing gown just like yours, and a pink satin negligee that she never wore but I used to glide around the house in it pretending to be Ginger Rogers. And I can't wait to get to the big car boot sale here! I've been nagging Pat to take me for weeks but I might just have to bus it in myself. xx
