Fifties fashion? Never wear it. Well except for trips to Asda and roaming the forest, obviously.
Wearing feminine nipped-in waistlines, full skirts and the demure midi length makes me feel such a fraud. I'm clumsy, noisy and stomp around in a way that belies my size but the space-age shoulders and sparkly lamé fabric have meant that I've held on to this jumble sale dress for longer than I intended.
The weather was so windy yesterday I quiffed and sprayed my hair to oblivion to save being blinded by a stray lock and this frock seemed like the perfect accompaniment.
Worn with my trademark neon brights , clumpy platform heels and a pile of bastard jewellery I definitely felt more Vix than a clean-cut 1950s housewife.
Those of a nervous disposition look away now - freaky arm alert. |
We're trading at two vintage fairs (HERE and HERE) this weekend. This was the photo shoot I blogged about doing. Despite being locked out of the venue, Sunday's relentless wind & wind, having to scale a couple of fences and getting lost in the wilds of the Staffordshire countryside they didn't turn out too badly.
I'm linking me and my vintage gang to Patti's Visible Monday.
1950s cocktail dress (jumble sale, 2012) worn with Urban Outfitters belt (present from Liz), a stack of bright jewellery (Including gifts from bloggin' babes Sarah Misfit, Tania, Krista & Helga), £5 candy platforms and a hair flower made by me. |
Our weekend was busy but brilliant, hope yours was too. We even managed to get to our first car boot sale of 2013. I'll share my bag of swag with you later!
See you soon.
You look great in 50s fashion, your figure is perfect for it, but I know I hardly ever wear it myself too. I feel much more comfortable in other eras. You all looking great in the line up.
ReplyDeleteThe look suits you! Lovely to hear that you had a great weekend! Friday was great but then i had to work ...
ReplyDeleteMagnificent! I ADORE this fabulous Space Age 50s frock and the accessories are PERFECT. Love your hair like this too - now I want to wear MY hair like this... I just want to be you, amor! The tights and shoes are frickin exquisite. Like you.

That dress is amazing! I love that it has space age shoulders and the shiny silver fabric is fab! It reminds me a bit of the dresses worn by the characters in the Jetson's cartoon series I used to watch as a kid. Best of all you've made this dress so very you!
ReplyDeleteOh Vix you a much much more than a 1950s housewife could even dream to be! The dress worn with you Vix accessories is perfection! Love those scooters I would have to have me a pink one!
ReplyDeleteAah love the retro scooters, the photos are fab! And you in your midi dress are absolutely fantastic even more so after you Vix-ed it up with bright stockings and jewellery xxx
ReplyDeleteGAH!!!! Of course that frock's keeper. Lurex, shoulders, baaaaaastard jewellery, fecking gorgeous tights and shoooooooooz - you've Vixified that 50s frock, which I shall christen Mother's Little Helper (not sure if you're a gin drinker though) ;). Yay for boot sale season - eeeeeeep!! The brolly shot is hilarious - the bloke looks like he's saying/doing something very norty! xoxoxoxoxoxoxo
ReplyDeleteHmmm ... I never use fifties fashion, but what if I am wrong. You have been wrong because you look super feminine, beautiful and not clumsy at all - in fact very slim etc.
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS! GORGEOUS! GORGEOUS! I'm in love with this dress! I was browsing through vintage section of Etsy last night and there were so many nice stuffs! But never this good.. this dress rocks and you are truly the Vintage Queen :)

ReplyDeleteYour are so funny Vix! I do know what you mean by the 50's style but I gotta say I like how you make it still Vix! The fabric on that dress is shimmertastic and you look like candy fairy in the forest.

Loveyoubunches
Xxoo
You did the '50's with a Vix twist; that included lots of bastards jewels and those funkylicious platform shoes and ties.
ReplyDeleteIt was definite worth all the troubles to get some pictures like the 3 group ones.
Well it might not be your usual shape or length, but the shiny silver fabric, a ton of your trademark jewellery, and the big old platforms means the 50s dress has been totally Vixified!
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing, of course, love your quiff and your freaky arms!
The photo shoot looks great, and yes, it does look as though the bloke next to you in the last shot is pinching your arse. He didn't, did he?!
Looking forward to a tour of your car booty! xxxx
I'm a big fan of fifties dresses and you look fabulous in that little lurex/lame (what's the difference?)number. What a teeny tiny waist you have. xx
ReplyDeleteYou totally turn that beautiful dress into a spectacular-Vixified outfit!!
ReplyDeleteI love the shape, the silver fabric and the shoulders and I think that the colorful, childhood inspired accessories are perfect with it!
The mod photoshoot is fabulous and I like your freaky arm too (I'm sorry that I haven't inherited but both my mother and my sister have it!)...
Lots of love xxxxxxxxxxx
Donna Reed you'll never be, my dear, and thank goodness for that! You're rockin' that sweet, vintage dress for sure.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck for continued success at your vintage fairs. Visited your website recently and WOW, I was SO impressed! Nice work!
xxx
The dress is gorgeous and you look great in it. '50s dresses look so much better styled the way you have done it than with all '50s stuff.xx
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your unique 'Vix take' on 50's style seeing as you said it's not usually your cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteYou look incredible and made the look all your own.

LOVE!
ReplyDeleteI love that silver green with the neon pink is just perfect. I love it, you could never do 50s housewife, way too boring. All those other mods look great! And that girl is my new clothing hero! xxx
ReplyDeleteTotally love the space age shoulders. You look delightful in that dress Vix.
ReplyDeleteFifties fashion may not be the decade you usually reach for in your wardrobe, but my, your reinterpretation here looks SO glamorous.
ReplyDeleteReally love this outfit. The silver lame with the splashes of pink and those gorgeous colourful beads are perfect for a spring day xxx
ReplyDeleteYou look so beautiful in that dress! I love the 70s does 50s look, so much more interesting than real 50s fashion which like you I think tends to be rather prim and drab. Loving that dress on you, and the gorgeous hair do! Hope you enjoyed being feted for your press day, my dear, great pics.
ReplyDeleteIs there anything you DON'T look good in, woman ??? ha ha, Think this one should be a keeper, it looks fab on you, love how you accessorised it. Cool Vespa's.
ReplyDelete1950's with a touch of Vix I like it, I ca. See very much so why you held onto it. Lovely. X
ReplyDeleteYou DO have the perfect petite figure for all the 50's frocks I come across! I think you rock it beautifully;it goes to show that you can make any look/era your own with some imagination and personality! I love the forcks, but I reckon you and I would have been hanging with the rockers, as they would have been having much more fun!
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely frock, and you are wearing it like a star! You certainly outshine the other peeps in the pix!
Love Helga xxxXXXxxx
Oh how gorgeous you look! I adore this frock on you! Let me know if it ever finds its way onto Kinky Melon!! Love your biker babes photoshoot too!x
ReplyDeleteLove your fifties dress. I know what you mean about fifties fashion, I absolutely love it but never feel graceful or ladylike enough to wear it.
ReplyDeleteYou know I'm partial to a Fifties frock and that one is a delight. Despite wearing them myself, I'm not at all graceful...rugby player thighs and have to fight the urge to wear DM's with then all the time!
ReplyDeleteYou own that look and it's been truly Vixified...love it.
Those photos of you all are brilliant.
Loves ya.
xxxxxxxxxx
What an amazing dress to have picked up at a car boot! I love those shoulders, they make the dress a little bit quirkier :)

I'm totally blown away by your outfit! Not only is it gorgeous but it brings the 50s back to life! I ought to know because I lived through the 50s (and attended the 1964 World's Fair). Your gorgeous dress brings the Space Age back to life for me. It reminds me of seeing the many of the movies (and TV shows like Flash Gordon) mentioned in the lyrics of the song from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" titled: "Science Fiction Double Feature". If you know me you'd probably not surprised to learn I loved it and watched Rocky Horror in theatres 11 times. I apologize for explaining ad-nauseam and digressing, but old codgers like me do tend to bend one's ear like that (I know that's not a good excuse).
ReplyDeleteThe vintage 50s look of your outfit and hair is perfection! With that gorgeous sparkly silver lamé fabric and 50s style puffy shoulders fabric, you look like you could be queen of a planet having just stepped out of Flash Gordon's space ship! The beautiful hair-flower looks perfect for the Garden of Eden the space ship obviously time-traveled to, and the pink colour (my absolute favourite) of your belt buckle and hosiery contrasts and coordinates perfectly with the lush foliage - are those rhododendrons? You made that hair-flower? You're amazing! It's beautiful!!!
I'm not surprised that you hung on to that dress. It would also be a lovely dress to wear to any high-class gathering (including cocktail parties).
My, you're busy with those vintage fairs! Your crowd looks interesting. The jumbles and vintage fairs must be fascinating to shop at. The adventure continues! Love it. :)
First let's talk about your hair shall we ... perfection! I love it poofed up like that and with the flower. And the dress is beautiful on you. What a neat see-through belt.
ReplyDeleteYou all look so terrific ... That must have been lts of fun to participate in.
You look stunning it that dress Vix and I can see why you held on to it. the photo shoot turned out well and good luck with the vintage fairs.
ReplyDeleteIf I get chance I might pop into the Wolves one.
X x
I adore 50's fashion and boy you can rock it and make it your own! The tights and shoe combination killllllllllll me!!! xx
ReplyDeleteNo wonder you've held onto it. It's trans-generational fashiontastical. Yes, a loverly mix of Vix and the Jetsons, together at last. And it feels so right.
ReplyDeleteThe dress is gorgeous! Love the photos with all of the other lovely ladies, too :)
ReplyDeleteYou Vixified that 50's dress!! i love how you styled it--it looks more like you--in a space-agey way!!
ReplyDeleteI love this dress and the way you style it. It looks so space age and so fab with the pink and platforms.
ReplyDeletexxx
You may not love the fifties, but this fifties dress loves you! With your addition of accessories and the flair that you bring to everything you wear, this look is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteThe pink tights totally make this look for me. AWESOME :O)
ReplyDeleteLove that dress and the belt! You could really rock '50s dress if you wanted to - just put your hair up like Helga's and you're there!
ReplyDeleteI think you should go to Asda and be a forest nymph more often! You look so lovely. You have the perfect figure for that gorgeous space age ice blue dress and the colourful accessories make it perfectly you.
ReplyDeleteThis vintage fair you are doing this weekend looks rather exciting!Looking forward to hearing all about it.
xxxxx

ReplyDeleteHope you are well? .. havent been on for a while ...
Sal x
Oh Vix I'm so far behind but had to say how much I liked this post. Like you, I don't feel like 50's style suits me, though I do love it. I always feel like you need neat hair and a demure walk among other things, whereas I have wild hair and I lope along so I look better in more 60's or 70's styles. But this look is great on you, I like the futuristic feel mixed in with the 50's, even in a crowd of vintage, you still stand out as being very individual. xx
ReplyDeleteI love this dress and the space age look of the shoulders with that little fabric detail!
ReplyDeleteAnd, remember there were the perfect 50's housewives and then there were the Teddy Girls and that's the look I'm reminded of here...better watch out for those Mods-gonna get ya!;)
I must admit though, seeing all those scooters I can barley see your dress cuz I can't stop looking at them-cuz I have crazy scooter envy!!! I love this post, but hate it too, sorry, it's not you...but, it reminds me of my Uber Cool 1959 Vespa, 2 leopard seats, with the most beautiful wide curved calings on the back...heavy sigh, WHY WHY WHY did I sell it WHY...Rosebud!;)
You all look like you had a great time and I agree with Clare, the gal in the orange is 60's perfection.:)
I love this frock so much I bought it :P Vix, your store website is SO cool!
