The Reports Of My Death Are Greatly Exaggerated

It just goes to show how long it's been since I last went to a jumble sale. One of today's helpers, Tracey, another jumble sale regular, went to one last weekend and was asked if she's seen "that pretty girl with the long black hair who wears weird clothes". When she replied that she hadn't the lady said that she'd heard I'd died.

It might be 3 months since I last had a rummage but I'm still drawing breath although, after a few hours serving at the church hall & arguing the toss over 40p being too much for a dress, I feel ready for the knacker's yard.

No rest for the wicked though, this lot below needs to be washed, pressed, priced and packed, ready for taking to the fair on Saturday.

Clockwise from top left: St Michael raspberry ruffled blouse, '80s metallic brocade jacket, '70s Windsmoor suit, St Michael lace-up floral dress, tie bodice chambray dress, 1960s St Michael bri-nylon pyjamas, Old skool Adidas holdall, Windsmoor cerise wool jacket, St Michael 1970s-does-Victorian dress, 1970s Windsmoor tie front blouse, Rhinestone trimmed disco dress, Leather biker pants, lurex batwing jumper and a sage green knife pleat tea dress.

It's not all for Kinky Melon though, I did secure a few bits for myself.

I squealed with pleasure when I unpacked this 1960s lurex and crimplene maxi dress.

This delicate 1950s nylon slip has a small hole - the perfect reason to keep it.

How much do I love this unworn 1960s St Michael swimsuit? Loads, especially as it's my size! I'm thinking of wearing it with my wellies and a floral garland at Glastonbury, at least it'll dry quickly.

Jon found me this gorgeous 1950s leather overnight bag.

These will keep us quiet for a few days.

Just a sneak peek at this maxi dress as I'll be wearing it for work on Saturday.

Jon found this 1959 Halina Anastigmat camera with all the accessories.

I managed to pull a very dodgy man today, old enough to be my father with hair greasy enough to fry chips in and more holes in his face from piercings than a colander. He told me that I was "the most beautiful woman he'd ever set eyes on at a jumble sale" which has to be one of the smoothest chat up lines of all time!

I'm off to load up the washing machine and reward myself with a glass of something alcoholic.

See you soon.

  6. Wow, can't wait to see you rocking that fabulous red caped maxi and the uber funky swimmer. Your description of the admirer made me laugh and cringe at the same time, I used to hate it when really minging men started chatting me up when I was working behind the bar...thankfully at the last place I worked my boss was fine about us chicks telling men to F off if their advances were unwelcome. You're looking mighty finein that lurex & crimplene maxi. Best of luck, getting everything ready for Saturday.

  8. Oy vey, I'm kvelling over it ALL! That maxi suits you to a "T" and looks scrumptious on you. I have the near exact twin to the slip, except mine is red (and in need of a little fixing on the hem.) ACK the PINK swimsuit... if I ever come to your house, beware! You guys always find such fab things, I wish things were as affordable here. They overcharge for everything at the thrifts, and lately the only deals I get are at estate or tag/ garage sales. XXX

Though you kept the best stuff for yourself. The dress is divine, the slip is beautiful! You have to use the camera, it's fantastic,. It looks good just out on display too! Xxx

  23. I snorted with laughter at the beginning and the end of this post - you must be a celebrity, they're always being summarily killed off in gossip circles. And I love the chat up line - what a slick guy!

Fab finds again, though at least I have some of my own today to take the green tinge of jealousy away!

  24. I hereby bestow the slightly bent tiara, gobs of roses, and coveted title of Ms. Jumble Sale 2013 upon you. Everybody's a bit concerned that this contest is rigged, because you've held the title for YEARS. The other jumble sale contestants are plotting to overthrow you in 2014. Sandra Bullock is playing you in the movie :)

  25. I wish we had jumble sales like that HERE!! Ours (we call them rummage sales) suck hugely!!
Youy got some awesome goodies to sell and keep!1 i am drooling over the brown lurex maxi!!

  29. Oh my gosh, I am so glad the jumble sale woman was wrong! Egad, imagine that. What a thing for her to say.

Your brown dress is fantastic, as is the red one. Can't wait to see it on you. And what a great overnight bag. Such great finds you guys lucked into.

Plus the greasy haired man? ... What a day you had indeed!

  30. Usually you can hear rumours about the false death of a rockstar, so that means : you are one of them! I know that is macabre and that people are silly, but I would be honoured if it could happen to me! Your finds are amazing and that bathing suit is fabulous can't wait to see you wearing it in Glastonbury, your festival outfits are always a joy for me! I love the red dress and the one you are wearing in this photoshoot with all my heart!!
    Lots of love xxxxxx

  31. A-may-zing finds, especially the dress you're modelling and that brilliant M&S swimming cossie. I'm off to a jumble on Saturday - the first one in ages - let's hope it's at least half as good as your one today.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Where could she have heard that from. How bizarre. As for the ole geezer compliment, well, in this case don't consider the source, just take the compliment!

You look fabulous in that dress.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You are absolutley HERE you gorgeous thing! I once had a homeless man look up from his cardboard box on the street and tell me that he liked my coat. Gush. I gave him some bucks. Don't know if it was a ploy for money but it worked and it actually WAS a very cute coat that nobody else had noticed. Must have been his point of view. I'm sure your old geezer knew what he was talking about!

    ReplyDelete
  34. How does Jon cope being on the arm of the local celebrity - death rumours n all?! I'm not surprised you've made a splash though. Your wardrobe and make up is just a splash of otherwordly glamour that would brighten up any day. I really love your finds. I don't know how you do it. I so rarely find secondhand vintage clobber, apart from in vintage shops of course, but then that's not quite so much fun. Please keep your eye out for any dresses large enough to fit a big and busty size 16-18 on your adventures. I will be Kinky Melon's most grateful customer!!! xxxxx

  35. You look amazing as ever vix, not surprised you caught the eye of a cheeky jumbler! Your finds look wonderful, props to Jon for that bag, what a piece!

    Much love x x x x x x

  36. Thank goodness that rumour has no basis in fact. Wonder who first dreamt it up and passed it on. Mind you, sometimes I have dreams which confuse me as to fantasy and reality.

Love the red maxi and the swimsuit best of all. Can't wait to see you in them, I know you are going to look lovely.

Love the old fella's comment. Although the qualifying bit about 'at a jumble sale' wasn't necessary! Recently someone said to me, 'you know you look really good for your age' and then said 'you're 56 aren't you?'. Had to laugh.

Being on the jumble sale committee was a good move, you did brilliantly. I have no idea what I'm talking about but I'm going to take a little bet that the adidas bag sells first. Good luck! xxxx

That's totally bizzarre about your"death"?! WEIRD. And a bit ick.
YES, the swimsuit will be PERFECT for Glastonbury!!! Jaysus,YES!
Nice to get some more stock, yours is THE best stall, I am sure! You'll have them falling over themselves to buy from you in that red maxi. Swoooooooon....

What a lot of treasure! All good stuff for sale, of course, but the pretty slip and the amazing cossie and brilliant, as is that fabulous red frock. You look stunning in your Crimplene and brocade number, and the overnight bag and holdall that Jon nabbed are great.
A productive day, love - you deserve a big fat drink! xxxx

  57. That dress is gorgeous and looks that way on you. I truly have boob envy for any woman who can precisely fit a pattern like that exactly where it belongs. There, I said it.

In high school the guys used to say the name "Adidas" as an acronym for "All Day I Dream About Sex" -- not sure if that will help you sell the bag or not, but I thought it was worth mentioning since I already admitted I admired your chest....

    ReplyDelete
  58. I was already drooling over you in that brown and gold halter dress as soon as I saw the first photo. It was just made for you!! I think you should start your own fan club and sell t-shirts (the proceeds could go towards your next trip). That is the most adorable swimsuit - perfect for music festival!

  59. Oh, yeah! Died and gone to heaven on the BEACH in GOA more like. ;)

What great finds and the brown maxi is so very chic. Looking forward to seeing you rock that sweeeet, little pink one-piecer.

Vix, you must just blind these men! That's such a cute story! Ya know, I had an older (than me) gal come up to me in the Salvation Army not long ago and say, "Honey, you're dressed too nice to be hanging around a place like this." I replied, "But this is where I get all this from!"

Best of luck at your show. You've got some great stock.

  71. I love hearing about the locals round your way Vix, they sound an amusing bunch. You'd've thought when the woman saw you weren't dead she wouldn't have mentioned it to you, but no, I guess she just had to confirm it with you! You got some brilliant goodies while you were there, that delicate pink slip is beautiful, and I can just imagine you in your Glastonbury outfit, it will look great, and that bag and camera are both gorgeous too, I'd just have the camera as an ornament even if it didn't work. The complimentary man mightn't have been the most handsome man on earth, but he obviously knows a good looking woman when he sees one. xx

Re: that report on you, don't you wonder where people come up with this stuff? I think it's because you are, no doubt, an exotic lady to many peeps, even in your village. You must have quite the air of mystique for the average non-vintage-boho-blogger type. It's actually a compliment that people are thinking of you so much that they wonder where they are when they don't see you! Xoxo
