A Grand Night Out

When Wolverhampton Grand invited me to attend the Red Carpet Glamour themed opening night of High Society I didn't hesitate, not that I'm a fan of musicals but because, like the rest of my classmates, I fancied the pants of Michael Praed in the 1980s (Robin in Robin of Sherwood and Prince Michael of Moldavia in Dynasty) and he was playing the lead.

...and who wouldn't?

I must admit I was dubious when I saw the publicity shots, more naff 1980s light entertainment show than classy 1930s-based stage play but it's a night out in gloomy old February and an opportunity to frock up and therefore a perfect cause for celebration.

Talking of frocks I had a plethora to choose from. The final three being a crepe 1950s Young Mayfair number inherited from my mum, a cheeky Bernshaw maxi courtesy of the divine Curtise and my eventual choice, a 1970s Grecian-style cruise dress I bought in 2011 from a local chazza for less than a tenner.

I considered digging out my heated rollers for some red carpet waves but with a 20 minute walk & a bus ride along with drizzly sub-Arctic temperatures it would have been a futile exercise. Luckily, Liz being the fabulous friend she is, created a killer beehive battered into submission with enough hair spray to finish off the ozone layer.

The vintage Siamese dancer pendant was a Xmas present from my darling friend, Dee.

With my trademark bling and matching Barry M eyes and nails I was red carpet ready.

Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre opened in 1894 and has barely changed.

Posh, innit?

Not too snooty to let us in, though. Jon looked rather dapper in his charity shopped threads. He's particularly proud of his 1950s wool trousers which he altered himself.

Necking a swift one before the show started.

Schmoozing with a couple of our gorgeous friends, Sharon & Jodie, the mother and daughter duo who organise several of the local vintage fairs. Sharon's slinky "That Peggy Page Look" lurex maxi came from the Kinky Melon shop.

A full house. As you can see everyone wasn't dressed to the nines, I even spotted a wolf fleece in the audience. Clearly my idea of "red carpet glamour" is at odds with a large percentage of Black Country residents.

Curtain up! Sadly we weren't allowed to take photos during the show but my initial misgivings about the costumes were unfounded, they were glorious, oozing '30s authenticity from head to toe and worth the ticket price alone. Mr Praed looked rather fine, too!

It's been years since I watched High Society but I recognised loads of the songs including Who wants To Be A Millionaire? and True Love. We had to giggle at the old boy behind us singing along at the top of his voice.

Despite not being a fan of musicals or costume dramas I must say that I absolutely loved High Society and would happily go back and watch it all over again.

High Society at The Grand Theatre, Wolverhampton runs until Saturday night, touring throughout the UK until 13th July, 2013(full details HERE).

In the words of this old punk, "It wouldn't be my first choice of a night out but I was surprised how much I enjoyed myself".

...and so the glamour ended. Jon has a quick fag & turns his phone back on before dashing to the chip shop and catching the last bus home.... bet Daniel Day Lewis never has to do that.

No Wednesday glitz and glam for us, we're off to the church to get the hall set up for tomorrow's jumble sale. Hopefully I'll have a few gems to show you on my next post.

See you soon!

  1. You both look utterly splendid! Tell Jon he did an excellent job on the trousers ;-)

ps - I really hope you went up and shouted FLEECE POLICE at the wolf fleece person. It's one of my naughty habits.

  2. Vix you look absolutely gorgeous, such a good choice of frock and hair.
Glad you had a good time, I adore musicals (get that from my nan) so hope I can catch this.

  5. Wow, you look amazing. The first thing I noticed was the beehive. How lucky you are to have such a talented friend to make it. I love the theatre but, like you, am not a fan of musicals. Looks like you had a grand old time though. Don't you just hate the fact that people no longer dress up for anything anymore. They're so lazy and jaded. The least you can do when visiting a grand old Victorian building like that is make an effort, which you both certainly did. I love Jon's tweed get up too xxx

  6. A wolf fleece? Some people really should not be allowed out! You looked fab as per usual. LOVE the dress and the beehive x

  7. I don't need the Oscars, I get my daily dose of bona fide glam right here! You knock spots off those Hollywood starlets anyway with your stunning frocks, gorgeous personality & genuine smile.
Although you would have looked splendid with red carpet curls, I think the up-do was the right choice. You look tremendously stylish and sassy all rolled into one deluxe bohemian package, yowza!
Jon does look fabulously dapper and I'm mega impressed that he altered his trousers himself, well done that man!
Have fun at the jumble and I'll keep my fingers crossed you unearth some gems.
    Lot's of love,

  8. You look stunning yet again - you made the right choice, that dress is to die for, and sets off your tan perfectly ! it is a lovely theatre isn't it ? I've been there on a couple of occasions, but have to agree with you, the concept of dressing up for a night out seems to be long gone. I've seen people at theatres looking like they've just come from work ! I think that is insulting and disrespectful to the artistes who are working so hard to entertain, and some folks look like they have'nt even bothered to wash ! They should take a leaf out of your book ! I'm surprised no one asked for your autograph !

Such a lovely description of what must have been a grand evening and thank you for the lovely pictures...Jon looks super dapper, it must be hard to constantly be outshined by your awesomeness...All the best at the jumble sale tomorrow, looking forward to see what you get (hopefully it will include a vintage coat in my size hehe!) xxx

  15. Just dropping by to say how much I love your blog. It's always nice to come across another vintage lover from the midlands and that white dress you're wearing is gorgeous!

I was so excited to read all your posts about your trip to Goa because I'm going there myself very soon! I will definitely be hunting for the less tourist-y spots to really enjoy the culture!

    Much vintage love,

  16. You look beautiful - your figure is stunning and your beehive is fab and suits you perfectly. Jon did you proud too (fab trews). What a shame people don't dress up more often. I scored a lovely 50s dress yesterday ... I took it up a couple of inches last night and if I don't breathe it fits perfectly! Have fun at the jumble sale ... M xx

  18. You look beautiful - the Belle of the Theatre - absolutely amazing! I adore your beehive, oh to have your friends Vix! Jon of course looks his handsome and dapper self too. I bet people looked at you two with both delight and envy! The Oscars have nothing on you two! Your two friends look fabulous too. I wondered what had happened to the lovely Michael Praed, there I have it! Sorry I've been away for a few days Vix, I'll reply properly to you later. Now, I've got a cuppa ready and must catch up with your previous posts! C xx

  22. well it sounds like thee is some genuine old vintage in the UK, boo hoo its never on ebay but so good to hear theatres everywhere are sticking with the originals!!

I've always loved that white dress on you, and are you more tanned than ever or is it just the white dress?? Etiher way it looks amazing!!

  23. You look stunning, Vix. Good on you for frocking up. Wolf fleece indeed! (I wear my fleece only indoors but it's so vile that Jim is threatening to disappear it along with my brother's 1970s parka which I can't quite part with). Liz did a fabulous job on your hair and I applaud Jon on his alterations. I've been getting Jim to do a bit of hemming on his trousers this week. It's all good! xx

  24. You rocked the red carpet, Vix, so glad you and Jon dressed full tilt; you both look amazing. You're channeling your inner (young) Liz Taylor in these shots! I know the flic High Society with Grace Kelly etc, but I always preferred the non-musical black-and-white version with Kate Hepburn and Cary Grant - they made such a funny pair on screen and the film truly is a hoot.

P.S. Love your period look below wearing your family heirlooms. I know it's hard to watch yourself on screen, but I would watch the interview - you were great. :) xoxo

  25. Oh babe you both looked amazing, I am particularly impressed with John altering his own trews, Duncan threads my needle for me when my eyes are tired, and that is the full extent of his sewing lol. I DO love old musicals, so I am a bit envious I would have jumped at the chance to go for sure. How fabulous to find something so glam to do on a wet Tuesday :)

  26. You both looked fantastic! What a dashing pair you made.

What a shame people are so lazy these days there is no sense of occaision at all anymore. With stories of I am wearing me trainers to weddings and the like. Bring back dressing up for a night out I say. I think this is why I do love costume dramas. So much more glamourous than say .........

    A wolf fleece! lol.

A great way to cheer up a cold Febuary night.

  27. Oh the glamour! I love that you and Jon really went for it, you both look amazing. That Grecian dress is beautiful on you, especially with the very elegant up-do (well done Liz!) and clearly Jon is the person I should go to with my sewing queries, clever man!
I enjoy going to the Lyceum in Sheffield as much for the building as what's on stage, Victorian theatres are beautiful, aren't they? Like you, I am not so bothered about musicals, but as I found with Girls Aloud, sometimes you discover things are more enjoyable than you thought they were going to be.
Michael Praed? Blimey, haven't thought about him in donkey's years, Robin of Sherwood was compulsory viewing back in the day!
Good luck at the jumble tomorrow. xxxxxxxx

  28. It's such a shame that not many people bothered to dress up and make an effort. I think it's so sad how people don't bother these days, I hate going to the theatre and seeing people in scruffy jeans and jumpers. Still, it makes those of us who have made an effort look extra good ;)

  31. What fun! It's been eons since I saw a musical, but now have a hankering to gussy up and go. You two look fantastic. Your beehive is killer.

[Aside: I guess the word 'gussy' is not a proper word because the spell check on my computer automatically changed it to 'hussy'. I'm glad I caught it, lest you think I was saying you had 'hussied up', though knowing you, you would have laughed.]

  32. So glamorous and gorgeous, you! And Jon is striking too, love his dress-up look. An old fashioned musical is fun once in a while, and dolling up is *always* worth it : > xoxoxo

So glad you enjoyed the show, I love the theatre every so often for a big night out - there's something glamorous about it I think =) xx

  35. Wow Vix, I bet you turned a few heads, you look stunning in this grecian number and Liz has worked magic on your hair too. Jon looks very dapper and how impressive to be able to alter his own trews! Glad you both enjoyed it, I'm with you on musicals, it gets on my nerves when they keep bursting into song every few minutes. I would make a few exceptions though and think this would be one of them. Michael Praed! yes he was rather tasty back in the day....

  36. Looks like an ideal night out and a great reason to dress to the nines. Can you believe how casual some people go out looking like? Some even dress better in an office than going to an old theater like that. Old theaters are a few well kept Seattle landmarks. I would feel out of place if I didn't dress up going to one. The two of you are just gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow, you even look good in white.

Beautiful old theatre. As long as people go to see live theatre, I don't care what they wear. Us theatre folks love a sold out house.

  40. You and Jon look fabulous as ever, it's always nice to dress-up and you did the perfect choice, but after seeing how you go shopping to the local supermarket, I'm not surprised at how much stunning you are here!
The beehive is perfect, you are so lucky to have Liz to help, I'd love to try a similar style, as you know long hair could be boring sometimes, but it has a huge potential, you just have to know how and a fabulous friend is what we need!
Big hugs and always lots of love!!!

Jon is handsome in his outfit and what you are kidding me he fixed the pants, you must be rubbing off on him. Your two friends look gorgeous too and that dress she scored from you looks fab! As always you know how to make anything fun, I wish I could have joined you both especially for chips after....YUM!!!!!

  50. I have been on the stage myself at the Grand, although not as an actress it was a backstage tour :-) If you check out the free heritage days in the summer, the Grand does a tour if you are interested. It was quite fascinating and strange standing on the stage looking out at the stalls.

  51. Michael Praed. Oh yes, we all had a massive crush on him. It was the Robin Hood prog we all watched. Think it was on a Saturday evening? So he's aged well has he? That's nice.

I love that gown and am in awe of your ability to go bra-less and look so wonderful with it. You look like a goddess in that gown, and with your Indian tan it is perfect. Jon's a dapper fellow for sure. Love those trews.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. xxxx

  53. Yowza! And, the Oscar for Best Dressed goes to VIX!
People in Portland don't really dress up here either, maybe 25% of the house for opening night, then lesser as the season progresses. I used to get season opera tickets, because I love it and just to have an excuse to dress up.;) I just love to see all the gals in their best.
Jon looks very dapper and your friends are looking quite fab too! I really loved that you showed us the other options you considered, very pretty! I would have had a hard time choosing. That black outfit is super glam and I need a close up of the purse...I think I may have the same one-crazy.;)
AND, PLEASE PLEASE, ask Liz to do a hair demo! I have wanted to do a beehive for so long. You're hair looked so amazing really LOVED it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love your gravity defying, ozone destroying hair, it's magnificent! you look every inch the film star. Jon looks amazing, love the trousers and waistcoat. Shame about the rest of the audience (when I worked at the theatre I found the remains of a chinese takeaway in the upper circle, so I know that local theatre doesn't attract classy audiences). I'm glad you enjoyed it, it can be surprising how good these musicals can be sometimes! xxxx
