Freak Like Me

At vintage fairs some women rifle through the rails, sigh over our stock and say they wish they had the nerve to wear the clothes we have on sale. "Give it a go", I'll tell them. "It's okay for you, you can get away with it, I never could!" They'll reply.

Get away with what exactly? Wearing something that deviates slightly from the norm ain't like robbing a bank.

Isn't it sad that in this day and age there's still some women who feel that they have to conform?

I could go off into a rant and blame trashy, third-rate, celebrity-obsessed magazines, style "expert" blogging Nazis or TV harridans like Trinny & Susannah who thrive on slagging off any woman daring not to dress in a way they think they should, but I shan't. I'll just shake my head in despair and praise be that I was born a freak who'd rather be a public laughing stock than an appropriately dressed clone.

Yesterday's walk on the wild side involved mixing a Victorian mourning jacket with a vintage Leslie Fay psychedelic maxi skirt, a pair of 1960s leather driving gloves and some massive supermarket chandelier earrings. Did I "get away with it"? I've no idea but as I got back from town without being arrested, publicly ridiculed or being banned from Boot's I suppose I must have done.

Taffeta and velvet mourning jacket with jet bead trimmed bustle (Inherited), Leslie Fay maxi (Georgia-May's Vintage Wardrobe), Emerald leather gloves (car boot sale)
By the time you read this we'll be queueing for our Indian tourist visas. Not the greatest thing to be doing in sub-zero temperatures but, hey, no pain no gain, by lunchtime we'll be one step further to that beach.

See you soon.

  1. That mourning jacket is perfection. I can't believe you were lucky enough to inherit it. I get the same thing quite often. The other day I was waiting to use a cash machine wearing a 40s cocktail hat and vintage dress, and someone came up to me and said, "I wish I had the balls to dress like you do." It's weird how people think dressing how you want makes you brave. I can think of many things that I would consider brave, but me wearing vintage clothing is not one of them.

  2. That beautiful Victorian mourning jacket fits you to such perfection, I want to weep a little. With joy! And the wildly fabulous print on the skirt is stunning. You look amazing, as you always do.
You look like YOU! Not a clone, not someone who has to be told what to wear, or not to wear. All those articles that tell women how to dress are so sad and so patronising.
Hope you don't freeze your arse off in that visa queue, darling! xxxxx

  3. I absolutely LOVE the way you dress- it just works- Victoriana meets psychedelia? Perfect. And gorgeous.
the world is better for people like you dolling up and standing out.

  5. This outfit is gorgeous. I adore the maxi fabric, the jacket looks amazing on you, but I am salivating over those green gloves!!!! I think if only people dressed like individuals rather then chain store clones the world would be even more interesting! Thank you for bringing colour & joy into the world. Xx

  6. I'm sure you brightened up everyone's day :) My love for all things vintage came from a need to stop wearing jeans, a non-descript top and trainers on a near daily basis.

When I wear things like my faux-fur trimmed full length coat, vintage cloche hat and leather court shoes on the rush-hour commute I do get stares.

But you know what? I don't care!

It's started many a pleasant chat when I'm out and about and helped the volunteers at my local chazzas know what I like (and point it out/put it to one side) :D

Keep doing what you're doing - I, along with a heap of other people, love it.

Good luck getting your visas! Xxx

  7. You truly are perfection. The maxi and gloves are killing me they are devine. Your mournjng jacket though is the icing on the cake to this combo, I just love everything about this combo and you. X

  8. They might have meant you have a great figure that compliments most clothes, or they maybe just unsure of themselves and lack the confidence to have their own opinion on clothes and just follow what society dictates. Whatever it was a huge compliment to you which ever way you take it.
Looking as great as ever btw, great gloves

  9. Holy fark - this outfit is EXQUISITE. I LOVE the amazing jacket and the skirt is just beautiful - and the gloves are the perfect finishing touch.

I always ask people what they mean by 'get away with'... and ultimately what they are saying is that they don't have the confidence to wear what they like. That is sad! Life's too short!

You are amazing, as always, mi amor. Beautiful, wise, fabularse and fucking smoking hot!

    Love you more than psychedelia!

  10. That Victorian mourning jacket is something that could not be defined by any words because isn't respectful toward it, especially if worn by a beautiful, creative lady that combined it with a psychedelic printed skirt and emerald leather gloves!!
I'm not surprised those women ran away empty hands, I know well their thoughts, the weirdest thing is that happened to me, even in my 20's, the other girls already wanted to conform and no one dared to play with clothes, making you feel like a martyr who would sacrifice for the sake of others!
In this case in Italy we use a Dante's quote 'Let us not speak of them, but do thou look and pass on.'
    Love xxxx

  11. Sorry for lack of comments for such a long time dear, life has been impossibly stressful lately and blog reading just hasn't been happening.

As always, you look fab. It is all related to self esteem, and it is sad that so many women have such low opinions of themselves. Going out dressed fabulously means you have to be prepared for people to LOOK at you. When you feel insecure that can be really hard, and I do think it is really brave for people to take risks with fashion and say (sartorially) 'LOOK WORLD, I'M HERE, DEAL WITH IT!'. Dressing how you want is like giving a big old finger to the world; I can see why some people find it daunting, but it sure does feel great doing it :) xxx

Well worth freezing your butt off!

  13. that jacket is awesome! I say there is no fun dressing down, so why bother? x

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ha, 'You can get away with it'... Pffff! Freedom starts with the clothes you wear. And getting out of the cold by getting a visa... Put on your warm shoes for the queue, Vix. X

  15. What a gorg outfit. I love that you mixed a Victorian mourning jacket with a 60s piece, and don't get me started on the amazing gloves (something about green leather gloves that thrills me, and with those zippers I'm over the moon)! I agree with your near rant on celebrity culture - the norm these days seems to be trashy mediocrity ... unless, if course, you're not a celeb with a perfect body and over a certain age. Then you're supposed to slide into styleless oblivion. Oops guess I've ranted. All the best with the visas! Xoxo

  16. Pure visdom and beauty in your blog!I live in a village with a population of 5000 inhabitants. My way of dressing is never a problem because the people here know that I dress in underwear as outerwear, etc. When I go to bigger cities teenage girls laughing behind my back, etc. I will soon be 42 and I could'nt care less. You dress so beautiful Vintage Vixen!

  17. Love that jacket and the skirt is a right Wowser! Some days I wish I was more daring than my usual charity shop purchased attire of bonkers over the knee socks and short skirts (a disgrace around these parts for a woman of 43) but after visiting the Clothes Show at the weekend - which was m idea of hell, I'd rather be me than some donut hairstyled, Ugg boot wearing, orange foundation wearing chavvy sheep. Viva the freaks :o)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Looking spectacular as ever Vix, the mourning jacket fits you like a glove, what an amazing garment to inherit. The older I get the less inclined I feel to conform and really don't care what people may say about me. I would wear vintage if I could find any in the South that didn't cost a fortune, it doesn't stop me looking tho'

    ReplyDelete
  19. Every time you wear that mourning jacket my eyes smart in awe! It's so beautiful. It's such a shame that some people don't have the confidence to dress how they'd like to. I can kind of understand it cos although I have never been afraid to stand out, there are times when u just hate being noticed and wish I could be invisible. It wouldn't make me change my style as that would be to deny who I am and would make me feel worse!

I'm glad that your Indian dream is one step closer although on a selfish note, I don't want to be without your posts for too long! Xxx

    ReplyDelete
  20. And this is exactly why I love your blog and you!! You inspire woman all over the world to just be themselves. I agree with wearing what you LIKE!!! I don't think I have a certain style but I love just throwing an outfit together, oh and accessorise, I rather like accessories!!! I will be put in my coffin wearing colour thank you very much and I may just request eye liner!!

  21. That jacket is stunning! I know my mum would love it too, she loves a bit of Victoriana and has a lovely cape she wears in the winter (my mum is a frustrated vampyre!).

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wow, how amazing is that skirt! Absolutely stunning, you look lovely. I must admit, I am one of these people who can't bring myself to wear things from vintage stalls, however, after viewing your blog I'm going to start!

    Take care, Catherine xxx

  23. I love that jacket, it look fabulous with that maxi !:)

  24. What you said is so true. Wear what the heck you want, even if it's not the norm. I so totally agree. You are a perfect model. I love your floral skirt and jacket. Totally sassy lady and so striking.

  25. That jacket is wonderful!!! It's sad isn't it when people feel they can't express themselves. You're looking great and so excited for you re. India! Yay! x

  26. Oh wow - that jacket is just gorgeous!!! Love the skirt too.

  27. Wise words Vix! It's such a shame so many women want to hide in the shadows, hopefully by simply being relaxed with your own striking individual style you encourage them to be a little more daring!

I adore this outfit, the jacket is incredible and the skirt stunning!

    ReplyDelete
  28. You look lovely as usual. I read your blog regularly and love your outfits and the way you put stuff together. I agree it is sad that a lot of women feel they must conform when it comes to clothes - I know I am one of them - saddo or wot ? but it's something that can't be helped. I have rails and rails of vintage clothes but don't 'have the balls' to go out in them.
I also think the comments 'you can get away with it' refers to the fact that you have a perfect figure/legs and anything you wear looks good. Again, I can't wear anything that might show the odd bump or lump here and there - never mind - I'll just keep admiring your outfits and your attitude to wearing them.

  29. Yet another of your wonderful phases to keep and remember:
I was born a freak who'd rather be a public laughing stock than an appropriately dressed clone.yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
You do us all sooooooooooooo proud.
I cannot take my eyes of your gloves; and the back of that jacket is absolutely breathtaking, ahhhhhhhhhhhh

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is such a great outfit! I love the jacket, what a wonderful thing to inherit.

I get people commenting on my clothes all the time and like you I often get told that I can 'get away with it'. I wish more people had the confidence to wear whatever they wanted to. x

    ReplyDelete
  31. It isn't always about wanting to conform. A lot of women, me included, don't have the confidence to dress in any way other than that which they feel comfortable and invisible in. It doesn't mean that they follow celebrity fashions necessarily. I certainly don't. I wish I had the confidence to be like you and wear whatever I wanted but I don't.

The comments about you 'being able to get away with it' are a huge compliment so take them as such. You can get away with it because you look great and have confidence in abundance.

Us of lesser confidence just have to live vicariously through you via your blog and wish that we could 'get away with it' too. xx

    ReplyDelete
  32. That is a gorgeous, gorgeous skirt and you look fab.
I do get narked when friends tell me 'I can't wear that' when quite clearly they can. What's the worst thing that could happen? I get comments about what I wear and usually they are complimentary, if they're not, who gives a shit....won't stop me. Colour and pattern seem to be the things that people fear!
Yes, defo to a spring meet up in Cardiff.

  33. Gorgeous jacket, Vix! Sometimes people have said I "got away with" some piece of clothing "because you're thin." Well, like you say, I wasn't holding up a liquor store : > Wear what you like, and have no fear.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ah I love you Vix :) I actually find I have that little bit more confidence when I wear something slightly out of the ordinary, even being called a yeti in Asda on account of my fur jacket didn't faze me :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOVE LOVE LOVE that Victorian mourning jacket. It's just the type of thing I would wear, or sew if I had the pattern. Classy er what? As you say, how sad that people impose restrictions on themsleves, and say they can't do this, wear this, etc. I can well imagine that they look at you as a Style Beacon. Someone they can only aspire to. As you say, it ain't a crime to look different.

  36. I like this post a lot, mainly because it resonates with me. I've always felt I've never really conformed with fashion but since being kinder on myself and not really giving a damn about 'fitting in' I've been a lot more at peace with myself.

I'd love to wear more vintage, can't seem to find any 'down South'!! :(.

When are you off to India? Sounds like perfection. BB xx

  37. Your outfit could be called "When Centuries Meet", what a beautiful mash up. I can't wait for classes to start up in January so I can walk across campus and look at all the collage girls dressed alike in their new clothes from The Gap and Old Navy. Clone after clone after clone...it's so boring. And the males are worse.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Could you look any more fabulous?! A great mix-up of fashion flavors to create a feast for the eyes, that's for sure. And India on the horizon, fast approaching. woo-hoo.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Add me to the list of those left speechless by that mourning jacket. It is absolute perfection in fit, style, materials, everything!
Unlike in London, my clothes sometimes elicit comments here in more staid Cambridge. Just yesterday a man said he liked my purple tights and said they went nicely with my electric blue metallic shoes. (Or maybe he was just saying he like my legs!)
If your outfit brings a smile to someone's face as yours most definitely do), then that's a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The jacket is just too special. I adore it. Love the green gloves. I might be a little sensitive, but I actually hate those kind of comments from people.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I hear this all the time, Vix. Especially about hats. But it only makes me more determined to be who I am. There is much fear in the world, unfortunately.

These photos of you are some of my favorite. The mourning jacket with floral and the green gloves are picture perfect. You are a stunner!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Amazing post, Vix!! I think BellaQ nailed the look-Victorian Psychodelica!! The mourning jacket is absolutely stunning and the juxapotsition with the groovy print skirt and bright greeen gloves is amazing.
I've seen what the so-called "designers" send down the runways and most of it wouldn't be appropriate in anyone's life unless they were a circus-freak.
My goals next year is to push my sartorial boundries even further!

  44. Lovely Vix everyone should take a leaf out of your book life is far to short to conform infact i hate that word. Being yourself is bloody important and not being a sheep i hate to follow the trends infact i wouldn't have a clue what was in fashion to be honest as you know i wear what i want to, being yourself is a the bestest way to be. You look gorgeous as always by the way. Dont ever change. Just think your be away from the cold soon to :-) dee xxx

  46. I love that beautiful jacket. Each time you say.."I inherited"....I have a feeling that I would have
loved to have known "the women before" you.

    ReplyDelete
  47. *sigh* I know that jacket has had much love but tough its getting more from me! ha ha. It truly is gorgeous.

I think here's the thing with the ladies feeling about not getting away with it. It is about confidence and attitude too. Standing out from the crowd is a big thing if you are like me a bit of a wall flower. I used a bit when I was younger then I got older and fatter and that confidence just dropped. I think that can be the issue with a lot of us ladies. If we feel that our bodies arent perfect then we are less sure about standing out from the crowd. I think that was maybe why they said you could get away with your style. I am changing my attitude slowly but surely but also being a big girl will probably never being to shoe horn myself into something so beautiful such as your Victorian jacket. Otherwise I might be out there now rocking a whole victorianna/goth vibe! lol.

Glad all your hard work is paying off and your Indian beach dreams are nearer!

This might sound like a stupid question: But is a Indian tourist visa the same sort of thing as needing a Passport to go to other country's?
I have never went anywhere needing a Visa. But I cannot visit the U.S. without having a Passport.

  60. I'm bored of those statements too. When I worked in a boutique, middle aged women were contantly saying "oh no I couldn't wear that because of..." and come out with some bullshit they'd read. I'd tell them not to listen to what magazines said, but people are convinced they can't wear certain things.
You look fab (obviously I'm restricted by size issues when it comes to outlandish clothes, but not that much), I'd love a Victorian jacket. Teaming it with the skirt is amazing, true to the spirit of Granny Takes A Trip etc. I really love the gloves too. You're an inspiration! xxx

  61. i suppose especially in germany woman - not just woman - are kind of afraid not to conform. especially when a woman is older then 25 she should be dresses normal: jeans, white tee and a blazer or a cardi. well dressed.
i was so shocked when i heard my co-workers talking about my style ... they call me 'the girl with the skirts', 'the girl with the heels' (when i was still able to wear them), 'the girl with the leopard spots' ... they don't talk about me as 'the girl doing a lot of overtime' ... people get confused so easily by others that look different ... i'm bored, so bored about this office life.

  64. When did the world think it was more acceptable be underdressed and look all the same????? The question that makes me grrrrr is "are you going to a dress-up party???" or the statement "I just couldn't wear what you wear".
My reaction "life's a party so I'm always ready" and I don't want you to wear what I wear" that's the bloody point.
You are the ray of sunshine in the clouds of grey!!!!!!

  70. My Lord, that is a gorgeous jacket...however can you get away with wearing that ;)
I get that comment a lot, especially if I'm shopping with friends who will pick up something and say, "here, you could get away with this". I never know if it's a compliment or what. I guess we should be happy that we brighten other people's day with our outfits, and provide them with something to aspire to...

  71. You look amazing and very high fashion, not at all like a freak. I know peeps who won't wear bright colors, any patterns, any jewelry, or even anything that would draw the eye to them at all. Sometimes I get it, but it doesn't stop me from wanting to take them shopping :P

    ReplyDelete
  72. That jacket is amazing! and looks amazing on you. Way to go Vix.
As someone who dresses more conservatively than you, I can relate a bit to women who say to you 'I couldn't do it'. I think we all just get used to dressing a certain way, and it can feel difficult to change (i.e. I used to always wear trousers, and feel self-conscious in skirts or dresses. These days sometimes I wear skirts or dresses because I feel like it).

    ReplyDelete
  73. OK-had to wipe the massive amount of drool off my computer to write this...I am in serious LOVE with that jacket-oh yessss, sooo pretty, drool coming again!!!
You've made the perfect combination with that dress and gloves-like a happy little goth look.;)

As for those so called "taste makers", they are just trying to peddle their mediocraty to get people to buy more boring crap.

I always thought it funny that so many people take issue with vintage looks-so what it was good enough for the past gals, but not now?!? WHATEVEH!;)

    ReplyDelete
  74. This outfit is divine! I am drooling over that amazing Victorian mourning jacket! As Bella Q says Victoriana meets Psychedelia! I love how the green driving gloves pick out the green of the maxi.
This is an inspirational post. It is very sad how people can't find the confidence to wear something they would clearly like to. Hopefully blogs like yours will chip away at that mentality!

  75. You look lovely in this outfit Vix, that jacket is absolutely gorgeous in every way possible! And I love the skirt and gloves with it, the colours are beautiful. I'm not brave when it comes to clothes either, I often put an outfit together and love it but then drab it down someway so I feel comfortable with other people looking at me. I know quite a few people think I'm weird enough already, though it doesn't take much here! In this town I mean, not Blogger, Blogger's been a big help to me in feeling okay with myself at last. xx
