Frock Autumn, Look At My Car Boot Buys!

Yeah, you already know that I'm a freak because I don't embrace Autumn like 99.99% of the blogging world but you can keep your chunky knitwear, hot chocolate, dark evenings, tweed, prohibitive heating bills and stodgy stews. I'm sticking to crisp salads and pear cider and won't be swapping my neon dresses, in-yer-face eye shadow and Barry M nails for neutral autumnal hues any time soon.

Nylon's just as cosy as knitwear and the beauty of a maxi dress is that you can wang thermal undies, woolly socks and leggings on underneath and nobody's any the wiser. Thank goodness I stocked up on fake fur coats at car boot sales in the summer when they were £2 each and nobody else was interested. I've a new-to-me 1960s cropped white number I'll stick over this to the pub later.

The one good thing about this time of year is that these platforms which I'd been eyeing up since June were marked down to £5 this morning. Yes, I not only bought something retail but I bought two pairs whilst I was at it (in different colour ways), too.

I reckon they'll look even more fabulous worn with some bubblegum pink opaques.

Anyway, enough about the weather. Here's some of the things I've been buying from car boot sales this week.

A huge stash of 1960s and 70s dressmaking patterns including an awesome majorette costume which should be brilliant to make for next year's festival season. £1 the lot.

Marcasite Art Deco buckle - destined for my stall at Sunday's Vintage Fair

A pile of fabulous mostly 1950s era satin scarves including one marking her Maj's coronation. How very apt! These are off to the vintage fair.

A 1930s Wyndham Creation bias cut silk slip.

How pretty is this rose trim?

Two 1960s hipster belts in rainbow colours.

Unworn 1960s swimsuit, destined for the vintage fair.

Three fabulous 1960s frocks, one handmade and the other two by English Lady. I love all three but they're too big so they're off to the fair to find a home with a curvier girl.

Unworn 1960s Windsmoor woollen skirt suit. Another item for my stall.

I wore this 1960s crochet poncho today (yes, me and knitwear, who'd have thought it?)  and got lots of smiles so I'm keeping this. It was £2

A groovy psychedelic make-up bag to replace my manky Barry M one. It was 20p

This 1950s Midwinter Fashion Plate cake stand will be on my stall on Sunday.

I love this huge 1970s Diana Ross mirror but Jon hates it! What a shame, if it doesn't sell on Sunday then I'll have to keep it!

This 1930s/1940s full length gown is a work of art but not my style so this'll also be off to the vintage fair on Sunday where hopefully it'll find a loving home.

I'm off to the pub in a bit as I don't think going out on the lash on Saturday with a 9am start the following day is a good idea. I'll try and take plenty of photos of my stall (unless I'm inundated with customers!)

Cha-Cha of New Zealand maxi dress (Courtesy of her deliciousness, Helga), 1960s Vogue umbrella (£1, car boot sale)
Have a fabulous weekend!
See you soon.

  3. Poor Vix, you look so out of place in the overcast weather. I know you hate this time of year. However, you still look amazing in that dress. I absolutely love it. I knew before I even read it that you would keep that crochet poncho, haha! I would come to your vintage stall in a flash if only you weren't so faraway...sigh. Can't wait to see the pics xxx

  6. Wow, you got some beautiful things! Good luck with your stall at the vintage fair.

  7. I LOVE English Lady! I have a psychadelic dress by them that fits me like a glove and a recent find was a quilted nylon(!) maxi skirt that's almost a bit Versace. With the added bonus of a total nostalgia trip with the quilted nylon on your bare legs. It's what our dressing gowns were made of in the seventies! Cracking finds!

  8. Can't wait to hear/see how your stall goes at the weekend, you've got some fabulous bits and hopefully will make a bomb. The scarves and the belt buckle are especially lovely. You used the word 'wang'! Brilliant!

  10. I am totally drooling over this post, OH. MY. GOD. First off this dress Helga sent you is making my head spin, you know I love it and it fits you perfectly, you are the prettiest girl in all of Walsall, the UK for that matter. That umbrella is adorable too! I'm so with you on not wearing dreary dull colors just because it's fall or winter. PINK YEAR ROUND BABY!!!

You have some fabulous stuff to sell at the Fair and that slip OMG Desire will be emailing you asking how much?!?!?! The belts are beautiful and the bathing suit is sure to go too. I can't believe all the goodies you will have to sell, I so wish I could shop your stuff!!!!! Please set up an etsy store Vix, pretty please!!!!!

I bet your ears were burning last night because we had dinner with our friend Chris (the jean maker) and talked about you and Jon all night! Talking about how much fun we had makes me re-live it all over again. BLISS.

    Talk soon!
    LoveyoumorethanPINK!

  12. Loved your intro to the post about autumn, hiliarious. I too hate how when the colder weather arrives everyone gets into all their darker colours, it's depressing really.

Your dress is very sweet and the colour of those shoes is amzing. Did you buy two pair in the same colour. I shan't imagine you did, so curious to the other colour.

What wonderful goodies you picked, I hope the vintage market us a great success for you. I'm very eager to hear the results.

I rather like the Diana Ross pic.

  13. Great haul Vix, I'm sure the buyers at the Vintage fair will be in for a huge treat when they get to your stall. Yes please do try and post photos if you get chance. I hope you make plenty of money for your next trip to India!!

I greatly admire your steadfast refusal to bow down to the change of the seasons, I on the other hand rather love Autumn so am quite happy to be in 'leaf kicking' season!!

And WHERE ARE THOSE SHOES FROM?!! They are simply gorgeous.

  14. Another beautiful dress for a beautiful woman. Good for you for once again ignoring fashion rules. Who makes these silly "rules" anyway?

I happen to love autumn as it signals the beginning of the end to all the blistering Southern California heat as well as vacation crowds. It also means HALLOWEEN, baby! We're fools for that holiday out here and there are a lot of creative events going on! I happen to wear orange and black together year 'round. Pink will always be my first love, but it does nothing for me; orange is another thing. But you rock on with those brights, girl. YOU GO!

Best of luck at your vintage show. Hope you make wads of cash and have a blast! Look forward to your follow-up post.

  15. Good luck with the stall! Can't wait to hear all about it. I'm with you on avoiding autumn/winter gear for a bit, still don't feel ready for all that despite it rapidly cooling down. I want to enjoy some colour for some time yet. And your hot pink maxi and platforms and providing me with the inspiration to do so! x

  20. I can't bear how cold it's gone since I got back from Ibiza. Horrible! But you've got some wonderful stuff for your stall, and I know you will make your airfares for India. That's the important thing!
I would love to come along, but I am doing stalls for our local Permaculture Group both days this weekend. I'll be knackered by Sunday night! Still, I shall look forward to hearing all about it next week.
Have a wonderful weekend Vix xxx

  21. Good luck with your stall Vix!

Love that slip and the 40's was pretty. Totally love the different coloured belts though.

I am afraid i am one those autumn winter loving girls, but in my defence have always worn black all year through! lol. Things are changing in that direction though. I put it down to me being a ghoul at heart and dream of old gothic building roaring hearths stormy weather and the odd bump in the night.

    Of the ghostly sort...........

    Have a cracking weekend

  25. "Stodgy stew" made me giggle. And I don't think we have car boot sales in the ol' southern USA, 'tho' we do have flea markets. I love seeing the pictures of the things going up in your stall.

You also look incredibly lovely and refreshing, and great score on the retail shoes :)

  32. I don't quite understand why bright colours are not popular in fall and winter; if anything, we should be swanning about in them all the time to brighten the dark days. This is a stellar dress from Helga. Good luck with your sales!!

  33. Such a pretty pink frock and its even lovelier now I know its from New Zealand:)

I'm a fan of polyester in the cooler months - it keeps me toasty and boots and tights can work wonders! Fortunately it never get too hot or cold in Wellington.

I wish I could come to your vintage stall! I hope you'll have the chance to take lots of pics to share:)

  34. I totally agree with you about autumn. I can't be doing with it. I want a summer! Anyway, the dress is gorgeous even if it is nylon (I remember nylon sheets only too well). Good luck on Sunday. I'm sure it'll go really well. Xx

  35. The frock is fabularse Vix! I must admit Autumn is very welcoming after such stiffling summers here in OZ but I dont do Autumn colours (on me anyway) they just make me look washed out. All your car booties look fab - and good luck with the Vintage Fair!!!

  38. I love fall weather. After the heat and humidity(since May) it's a much needed break. I've been looking longingly at my sweaters and socks! BTW fall happens here sometime in late October.

Wish I could check out your stall, but I don't have a TARDIS. Good luck with that.

All the downed trees are being cleared away and I've very greatful the giant pecan tree in my backyard didn't fall on my house.

  39. Oh Vix, what a fantastic post!!! I think the pink dress is divine, and the umbrella is amazing. Good luck with your stall, I am looking forward to seeing some photos. 41. I'm on my 5th gin and tonic and so my reaction to this FABULARSEHOLE POST OF DELIGHT may get a little out of hand!
Firstly, that frock is heavenly and you look so gorgeous in it!! And you're going to add a white faux fur for going out later?! EEEEEEEEK!
Your scores are tremendous, some incrediblty great finds that I hope make enough in one fell swoop for you and Jon to spend a month in India!!! I'm not normally into 30's (wouldn't suit me in a million years) but that frock is beautiful.
The platforms are amaing, for 5 quid I'm pleased you went all out, too good a deal to pass up for shoes you'll wear the hell out of!
The majorette pattern makes me SQUEE, you so better make that up in a hurry!I expect you have the perfect trim ready to ROCK!
The Diana Ross mirror is so bad it's fantastic, Jon!!! I can imagine being scared by it in the loo in the dead of night! She was such a bitch!Probably still is, she ain't dead yet!I loathe her watery voice!
Yay you got great comments in that poncho...you are the only woman I can think of, apart from Cher, who could possibly make one look good!
    You ROCK, sister!
    Love Helga xxxXXXxxx
PS: Hope it goes really well. So well you make enough to stop off in India for a couple of weeks and then come on down to us!

  42. Your pink dress and poncho remind me of outfits I had and loved in the 70's Vix, though the poncho was responsible for the little scar on my chin as it wrapped around me when I fell and rolled down a hill, so I couldn't put my arms out to stop myself rolling!
The satin slip and the 30's dress are absolutely beautiful, and I love your bargainous new shoes! Peeing myself at Helga's critique of Diana Ross too!
Good luck at the vintage fair, wish I could be there, your stall will be fantastic. xx

Love the frock from Helga (she's no Miss Ross fan, is she?!) and as ever, your booty is fab. That sounds wrong... CAR booty, I mean! All the frocks are amazing, gorgeous scarves, great cossie, beautiful buckle, fab belts... The list goes on!

Good luck for your fair! I'm so upset I can't make it - next time make sure it's on a day I'm not working and/or skint! :)

Yep, everyone's going to be moaning about the lack of vintage faux fur now that autumn's arrived up your way, why they don't buy out of season, I'll never know!! Lurve your brolly and frock and hell's what is this crap about "switching" to fall/winter colours? Honestly, it's just a ploy to get people buying more shite to clutter up their lives isn't it? I swear winter would be a happier place if people wore bright clothing, make up, nails and shooooooooooz!!! *drools* xoxoxo
