Charity Shop Finds & A Couple Of Questions

You did know it's £4.99? said the elderly volunteer in Age UK when I tried to pay for this 1960s tartan cape at the till yesterday. Mind you, she added, it's lovely quality wool so I suppose it's worth the money and you'll look just like Miss Marple in it.

Much as I love the old girl it's not quite the look I had in mind.

The 1960s vinyl and tapestry shoulder bag was another of yesterday's purchases. The manager in the YMCA said that she'd noticed that I liked freaky stuff nobody else would touch with a bargepole. Just as well I'm not the sensitive sort.

Freaky? I think not.

The wonderful Lucy commented yesterday, "I wonder if you have an outfit which holds bad memories for you, one you haven't been able to wear because of this?"
I have a ridiculously good memory and amaze my friends by recalling what we were wearing on a certain day twenty or thirty years ago. I'm not superstitious and have no qualms about wearing something I wore during a bad period of my life. The dress I wore on the day my Mum died still hangs in my wardrobe and I wear it often.

The fabulous Jen asked me, "Is your house haunted?!" Now I'm a rational person but there's been a few unexplained incidents in the house. There's a black cat that darts underneath the furniture in our dining room which our cats bristle at the sight of, sometimes it'll pass us on the stairs (which lead off the dining room) and vanish into mid-air. After both of us admitted seeing it to someone who knew our house well they guessed which room this sighting occurred in and told us a young man hung himself from the light fitting in the 1920s.
There's more but I don't want you to think we're nutters.

The haunted room is the one with right-hand bay window and there's been some strange occurrences in the room directly above, too. Don't worry, though, our visitors say the house feels friendly and inviting.

Tartan cape (£4.99, Age Uk) worn with tapestry bag (£2.99, YMCA), bronze leather headband (50p, Salvation Army) and Dolcis suede boots (£4.99, PDSA), Ebby, our 1970 VW Variant (eBay)

Any plans for tonight? It's a night in with home-made pizza, rum and my latest obsession, Inspector Montalbano, for us.

Have a brilliant weekend and see you soon.

  1. I'm the same with remembering exactly what I was wearing for all sorts of occasions!

I lived in a haunted house in my teenage years - it was well known in our local area as being haunted and I never saw anything, but I liked knowing there was something there.

  2. O! A haunted house! We don't need any ghost cats we get enough trouble with the two alive ones that we have.

And see my memories rubbish for normal things so what I was wearing when someone died would never been remembered so I'd have no qualms about wearing clothes which I had worn on a bad day. Sometimes there's a plus side to having a bad memory for little details like that.

  3. i always remember events by what i wore! I think it is just because i have a very pictorial memory and clothes are an easy thing to remember!

    ReplyDelete
  4. really love your outfit.
I also remember the events when I wore an outfit. if the event was very bad and made me feel bad, and if there where more than one bad event when I wore the same outfit, I always get rid of it. I'm a bid superstitious, I guess... ;)

  5. I love your 'freaky' finds, you always make them work in the modern world. The only outfit I had a problem with was a bright top and cardie I wore for my dad's funeral, I sometimes wear it for work and it feels a bit weird wearing it. PS I'd be interested to hear more of your ghostly stories and I can't for your blog posts when you are being tourists with your friends when they visit. xx

  6. The Crawford Tartan! I could send you a biscuit tin to match!! No really.
I love remembering old clothes, the texture of them and sometimes even the smell. Sometimes in a charity shop I'll see something I used to own
and love but its never in my size.

  7. Ur brave living in a haunted house!
    I love that cape!
    I sent u an email btw - I feel SICK! :(

  8. What does a girl have to do to inherit that cape from you? Lordy, what a great deal! And you look amazing in it.

I like the idea of ghosts yet the house remains friendly and inviting. Not sure if I could handle a ghosty black cat though. I like my black cats real, and friendly like.

  9. I'm also someone who remembers what I wore somewhere particularly shoes!!

We had a house that was haunted years ago, we never saw anything but felt it a lot, and so did our visitors despite us not mentioning it to anyone, we didn't want people to think we were nutters either! I was quite glad to leave it didn't feel good, fortunately we just rented.

  10. Those finds are amazing! I have never come across a cape yet thrifting (but i hope i will someday), and that bag is a fabulous kind of freaky - incredibly beautiful) I love your sense of style, I do I do I do! I bet going shopping with you would be so much fun.
And I agree, even though your house might be haunted, it`s very welcoming and stylish (from the house tour post).

  12. They are really interesting questions. I actually had a beautiful blouse with a tiny cat print I really liked but never had the heart to wear again after I wore it to a funeral, strange isn't it how we attach memories to things.

  15. ;-)) Im still chuckling at that ladies comment in the chairty shop about you looking like Miss Marple and how much it was going to cost you bless her heart ;-))I have to say you look nothing like her at all you look gorgeous as always and its a lovely bit of tartan it looks cosy, stylish and warm. Loving the bag to those ladies don't know what there talking about ;-)I find the whole ghost subject fasinating especially if its connected to a house or building you know. Have a great weekend, dee xx

  16. I grew up in a haunted house. My mother had a figurine of Mary she had inherited from her grandmother and it would often vibrate on the shelf! Yet if you felt the shelf you could not feel the vibration - it was literally in the statue itself. Freaky! There were other incidents with noises and visions too. Another creepy fact I can admit to is that two of my great-aunts, as children, spontaneously combusted at the same time, in separate houses, some distance apart. Its documented here ... http://www.calderdale-online.org/community/life/life8.html

  19. Aye!! Mrs. Marple has nothing on your gorgeous self in that wondrous cape.
I want all your magical capes.
I cracking at the granny's comment.
Your house sounds amazing, you know I like all that freaky ghost shit.I remember you telling me about that loco black cat. I would get bugged all night at your casa.
    Have a great night amorcito.
    luv ya

  20. love that cape! it's so funny how people will just say things and have no qualms about your feelings.

i have a friend whose house is haunted and my sister in law swears hers is too. and you'd probably hear me scream all the way to england if i saw a ghost in my house!

    have a lovely weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love the ghost stories, I won't think you're mad at all if you share more. I definitely believe in, and have seen, ghosts myself.
I have a bag very like that, only it's dark (not navy though) blue with flower tapestry. It's nice to have your dating for it, cheers!
I must say, I'm always flattered if someone calls me a weirdo.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Love the view of your home. It's lovely. Ghosts too! We had one where I grew up; aparently the builder committed suicide after he had killed his wife and daughter! We believe it was the little girl, Katherine and we think she came with us when we moved to the South Coast.
I can smell my grandad's baccy, (he died when I was a babe, so didn't really know him). I find it a great comfort.
Cape with a matching bicuit tin available...smart!

  24. Adrian is very in touch with the psychic side and often sees and hears things-none in our place so far, touch wood!
Unlike you Vix I am very superstitious, I wish I wasn't as I can get OCD about it sometimes. I try not to let feelings get attatched to garments but it is difficult. I have worn the top that I was wearing when I had a serious car accident again since, but always feel slightly funny about it. :( Silly, because I wear so much from charity shops and for all i know, someone could have died wearing that!
Thanks for sharing-I find it all so interesting :)
One quick question from me-well Adrian really-what is the name of Jon's band? Age is a massive muso and I showed him the wicked pic u put up a while back of Jon, he's been trying to work out what band it was, it's driving him nuts! xxxxxxxxxxxxx

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love that your charity shop people know you so well! It's a great cape. Your boots are like my dream boots!

I wouldn't mind a ghost cat, ghost people are much more troubling.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love spooky stories and capes too, though my cape is of a Victorian style. I should gain the courage to wear it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. freaky stuff! How wude! :D Some people eh! I love the look of your house haunted or not ♥

    ReplyDelete
  28. Another fabulous cape - the Miss Marple/freaky comments made me smile, people don't always engage their brains before speaking!

I'm glad you say that people still find your house welcoming despite the ghosts - I was worried if I ever got to visit you I'd feel uncomfortable with them! I've mentioned before living in a haunted flat. I remember visiting a friend and going totally cold all over and she 'oh, that's my grandma sitting next to you', freaked me out a bit at the time and I never stayed overnight at her house!

    ReplyDelete
  29. whouuu, that cape is fabulous (I'm always a huge fan of red plaid!), and you look colorful and warm! (not in the M. Marple style!)
And I think I'm a little bit superstitious about some clothes I was wearing in bad moments in my life, I like to discard them as soon as possible!, instead it's stupid!
    besos & happy weekend

  30. I love love love that cape! Good thing there's an ocean between us or I'd sneak into your house and steal it. I could wear a white sheet and say "whooooowhooo" and you'd just think I was a ghost, right? Hehe ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  31. You defo don't look like miss Marples lol! Cape is great.
Houses and Clothes with history are the best. x

  32. Wow your house sounds so interesting. I don't believe any thing wants to hurt you, probably just intrigued by your style! And who could blame them.

    loving your cape.

  33. Ha ha, I love Margaret Rutherford. But you don't need to worry, you look nothing like Miss Marple. This outfit is great. I kind of run out of adjectives when describing outfits I like so forgive me if I repeat myself but it does look great! I love the boots and the bag and the combination of colours x

  34. Your house sounds fascinating... do tell us more!
You rock the tartan :-) Have a fabulous weekend....

  35. I own exactly one LBD, which for the past 24 years I have worn to almost every family wedding or funeral. It makes it easy to remember what I wore...

I am moving to a house that was allegedly once used on the underground railroad so I hoping it's all good karma there!

    ReplyDelete
  36. wow how amazing is your cape!! very jealous vix you look great.I always get funny comments from the old dears and volunteers taking the piss out of outfits then I pick that outfit up and buy it beacause its to my taste,oh well more for us.And I am a big believer in ghosts I dont care what anyone says,I have had many experiences with spooks.I read a book which you might find interesting I will dig it out later and let you know the title and author xx

    ReplyDelete
  37. As the proud owner of a tartan cape myself, I say rock the Miss Marple look, hahaha! Of course you look nothing like Margaret Rutherford but you DO look adorable in your very expensive £4.99 cape!
LOVE the bag - I stalk 1960s tapestry and vinyl bags on Ebay but they go too high for me, so yours is a bargain. Of course!
I have a charity shop I go in where they joke about my odd vintage choices, and reckon they should start a loyalty card scheme for me - I wish they bloody would!
Ghosts... I struggle to believe in that stuff, but enjoy the tales. I'd quite like a ghostly cat. It wouldn't piss in the house like the only too real stray who regularly pops in...
Have a lovely evening, my dear. xxxxxxxxxxx

    ReplyDelete
  38. yep, I can pretty much remember what I was wearing on a myriad of occasions!
I MUST say, I adore this cape! Why oh why do I never find any vintage capes in Charity shops stunning like this! It's a true beauty Miss Marple!

    ReplyDelete
  39. How about a modern incarnation of Ms Marple? I think you + cape = funky Ms Marple. Freaky taste?!? I don't think so! xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  40. Lovely cape - don't worry, your Miss Marple days are still a long way off! I'm sure your house must have many memories - why not a few ghosts? Inspector Montalbano is growing on us too! xxx

    ReplyDelete
  41. What! You mean you don't want to look like Margaret Rutherford? Can't think why. Perhaps the lady in the shop meant funky not freaky?
You look ace as usual Vix, glad you're not the sensitive sort.
I rather like the look of Inspector Montalbano.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love Inspector Montalbano...

Am years away from seeing you as Margaret Rutherford, your hunt for fabrics is so alien to the de riguer plaid...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Great cape! As much as I love Miss Marple you definitely don't look like her :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love that cape! I have a few woollen op shopped blankets that are crying out for a make-over! A cape would be a fab idea - especially with winter coming!
A haunted house - wooooooo! Do your own cats freak out at the "sight" of the black cat?
You are truly a devine speciman Miss Vix
    x

  45. What a great cape! You're definitely NO Miss Marple though.

    Nutters? No way!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Love the cape too.

I went on one of those ghost walks round London, it was brilliant fun. My friend and I had a long chat with the guide afterwards and we asked him if he had ever seen a ghost on the route. He said in all the years he had been doing it only once, and that was a cat too. He did point out that as the road was higher now than it had been in previous years it was really only half a ghost cat!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh what a lovely shade of green ~cape looks great with the tall boots! I think Miss. Marple had it all wrong :) My grandmother has a 200 year old house and it is haunted had some interesting experiences there lots of sounds and voices....The bag is cool tapestry is so interesting isn't it ~Enjoy your weekend Love Heather

  50. Funny the story about the cat!
I must notice if there freaky stuff going around here
My cat goes completely bonkers in the basement maybe he sees something stange down there!

    I love your cape

Off to supper soon with Mr. D

  51. Oh, Vix, what a smashing cape! I have an ankle-length tartan cape in blue and green and I always feel a bit like Sherlock Holmes when I wear it. Yours looks very swinging 60's with your boots and headband--definitely not Miss Marple! I always think it's funny when the stuff that I'm drawn to in thrift stores are the things that they put out for Halloween or are things that no one else would wear!

    ReplyDelete
  52. You look much more fabulous than Miss Marple.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love your house even more now! A haunting black cat and a creepy death?! Awesome! I've often read stories about animal spirits and cats seem to be a main culprit, I'd love to have a feline ghost companion as well as Bella, that way Pyf can't complain about not wanting two cats!

I'd really love to hear your other stories as I love a good ghost story and have many many many books on them!

Love the cape, you must have quite the collection of them! xxx

    ReplyDelete
  54. He He, the people in the charity shops have no diplomacy 'eh?

I thought you were going to say they'd put some stuff to one side for you!

Pretty good week then what with your purchases and the garden finds?
Let's hope the weekend is good and the week ahead!

  55. Your tartan cape is superb and not at all Miss Marples-like. As a cape love I am impressed. I live in an old home as well, and sometime the unexplainable sounds can be a bit disconcerting. I think I need to burn some sage!

  56. That's my girl Vix, always finding the best! Miss Marple haha! You look divine and in that brilliant cape love. -xo

  57. *Bwahhaah* At your Miss Marple comment. It gave me a good laugh.
I think you look quite fantastic in your cape. And that bag was a great find too.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I wonder what tint of glasses she was wearing when she said you'll look like Miss Marple in that cape!? And I certainly wouldn't let anyone come close to my freaky treasures with a disgusting bargepole! You look fa-byu-luss, by the way. It's Hercule Poirot for me tonight, if I can eek out some more free time. I'm glad your visitor is benign.

    ReplyDelete
  59. You have quite the collection of capes now don't you? I love this one it looks so warm and cozy and at the same time very lovely on you.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love the tartan cape, it looks so snug. It's cute the ladies at the charity shops hold things for you - even if its because they perceive the things you like as being "freaky" - beauty is in the eye of the beholder right?

Interesting ghostie story, its sounds like the wee ghost is harmless. You always get a bad vibe in houses where nasty ghosts are lurking.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Ha Ha you look nothing like Miss Marple. That cape is beautiful on, I love those colours, another great find, and a bargain too!Enjoy your weekend x

    ReplyDelete
  62. Impossible to say whether you look like Miss Marple without posing on a bicycle. My husband swears our house is haunted too. Do I understand correctly that it a ghost cat?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I love this look on you! You look like the pages from a catalogue. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love it - a Mod Miss Marple! It's about time the old girl got an update. You look wonderful in the cape. Have a great weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  65. That cape is lovely. Forest City Fashionista is right, it's definitely more 60's than 60! Looks great on you.

I don't think there's a problem with sensing spirits as long as they're benign, as yours obviously are. It just adds to the character of the house.

I shall be watching Montalbano tonight too. He's taken over from Wallender as my new obsession. I am so fickle!

    Have a great weekend x

    ReplyDelete
  66. Personally, I think you would look great in a sack so I wouldn't worry too much.
I also have a good memory although I am better at remembering what other people were wearing than what I wore.
I often wear the black polo, skirt and shoes I wore for my dad's funeral.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I am still laughing at the things people say to you! You look great and thanks for the ghost stories...Have a great weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Oooh you look fab in that cape.
Have to say I love the idea of hauntings and ghosts.
Off I go with the theme to the Miss Marple films lodged in my head!xxx

  69. Oooh the caaaapppeeee!!!

Haunted houses - we used to live in a row of terraces where we had poltergeisty/mischievous stuff going on in our house, and a sense of being watched sometimes (cats used to get batshit jumpy) - but next door had 'someone' who lived with them, that so thoroughly unnerved the grown ups that they had a priest around on several occasions to try and get rid. Their children used to talk to the deceased quite casually. We had a pit disaster locally and several families on our row lost boys and menfolk - that's what we put it down to anyway - poor souls.

  70. I knew your house had something going on ~ and a lil ghost cat too. I think your house looks so inviting and warm. What's one hanging? :)

  76. I knew it! I knew you would have a fabulous story! Omg. First, your house is awesome. It looks so pretty and cool and something right out of a film! And how spooky some guy hung himself. Wow. And since it was built so many centuries ago, you just KNOW there are more stories which you probably don't even know about! I love it! (Sorry, I'm waaay too enthusiastic but I'm kind of a history nut mixed in with horror film fanatic, so...). ;)

  79. Yet another gorgeous outfit, Vix. I love that cape and the dark green accessories; Ebby always is the epitome of style, too

Having lived in a house with a presence in it, I can well believe your incidents. My presence felt like a man and always seemed quite happy to have me there, or that was the vibe that I always had off him. He was a bit of a trickster though, and kept me and the cats on our toes at times! This might make me sound like a nutter, but I did used to talk to him when I felt his presence and I think that this made him happy. My neighbour on the other side (we lived in a terrace) didn't have such happy memories of him though, as unlike me she actually saw him when he passed through our adjoining bedroom wall and she said that he frightened her.

P.S. Please tell us more about your 'visitors', Vix. Bloody hell, I'm beginning to sound like Margaret Rutherford myself when she played the medium in 'Blythe Spirit' !!!

  80. I can remember much of what happened when I was wearing certain clothes, but that doesn't really stop me from wearing them. I think the only ever gotten rid of one thing because it reminded me so much of what happened when I was wearing it.

Anyway, I think the fact that you like the freaky stuff is a compliment! Obviously that cape & bag are fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  81. We have a corner-of-the-eye-cat, too! Dogs often try to get in or chase something we can't see in the front garden!

I love that white bag, and don't think it odd at all. It looks like something you could find a replica of in River Island or Monsoon...for ten times the price!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Love your Miss Marple cape and your spooky stories! Your house looks lovely and inviting both inside and out :) x

  83. Tartan cape to die for. And I'd touch that bag with or without a bargepole.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about a ghost cat. I guess it's better than a humane ghost. When I read your post, it reminded me of this listing on Etsy, where you can adopt a ghost cat, http://www.etsy.com/listing/93568657/adopt-a-cat-ghost. Maybe I should get one so your ghost kitty will have someone to romp on the astral plane with.

  84. You look wonderful as always!! Your sense of style is fantastic. Strange about that ghostly cat....

  85. Adore your cape I vividly remember my Mum wearing one very similar when I was little.
The only way you are ever going to look like Miss Marple is if she has been crossed with a cat-suited Emma Peel in a surreal Avengers spin off! :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. That tarten cape is so fabulous & your suede boots what an awesome price. Here's my suburban haunted house story.......when we moved into our 1960's house my oldest at time was 8 years old & saw someone dressed in black floating in the room above the bed.....she closed the door & put our bible in front of the door. The next morning the bible was up side down!

  87. I made a squeeky noise when I saw the tartan cape. It is awesome and you look incredibly stylish in it. I moved around a lot when I was younger and lived in an old haunted farm house once. But it never struck me as weird, because my parents where very open-minded about these things. Even my current house has some activity. But only my cats and me seem to notice it :).
