Cheap Frills

Spending time with friends, sunshine, booze, Indian food, great TV (How Hip Hop Changed The World and Sons Of Anarchy) and a jumble sale, now that's what I call an excellent weekend.

I spotted this 1960's number in amongst the bedding pile in the jumble.

I've got two of these now!

Orange, cat suit, frilly, my size and 10p? Thrilling.

Cleopatra chain belt (25p, car boot sale) plus  loads of jewellery including a bangle from Sandy (top, right) and two rings from Sarah.

Here's the rest of my jumble buys.

This pile of The Women's Press paperbacks (10p each) will keep me quiet for weeks.

Isn't this lacquered Chinoiserie jewellery box pretty? 50p well spent.

How unusual for it to have it's key, too.

I wait for ages to find a smaller sized leather belts and three turn up at the same time. 20p the lot.

This 1950's Venice print pinny was 10p.

Perfect for when Jon's creating his pizzas.

Hope you've had a brilliant weekend.

My house when I was a child, was filled with those hand-painted jewellery boxes and fragile display shelves - All of which my parents had brought back from Aden in the early Sixties!

That orange frilly suit is adorable looks great with your dark hair!! You have a really sharp eye for jewelry I would love to look through your jewelry box :) I am really excited to see what I can find here in the sooq market. Once the weather cools off in the winter I am going to dive into that market. Your supposed to be able to bring your favorite clothing pieces there and they have tailors that can dupicate them for really cheap in your choice of fabric. I have a skirt and dress that I would love to try that with. One of these days I will find myself a cute little vintage outfit. I would love to have something vintage to wear. ~Have a great week ~Love Heather

  54. Amazing - orange, ruffles, 10p!!!! The jumble ladies must've thought it was a Brentford Nylons bed cover - remember the orange, frilly bedspreads? - and not looked at it properly before slinging it in the wrong pile. Well done you - now come on, own up - you've got x-ray vision with your talents for spotting these amazing things!

Is Jon going to let you post a pic of him wearing the pinny? ;) xx

  59. The pinny and belts are my favorites of your "loot"!

I watched a Masterpiece Mystery (Inspector Lewis) last night. Involved a lady who pretended to be her sister who had committed suicide (a rock start from the 60s) in a contrived attempt to reunite the band and make some $$$. Of course there were murders, etc.

ANYhow, the characters - the good ones, of course - made me think of you and Jon (or what I've imagined about the two of you)!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Wahoo! Great scores there!
There's not many people that could pull that orange suit off - you look brilliant. Must be hellishly itchy though is it? I once had a dress and the bodice looked like similar stuff. I had to go home and take it off!!

    Happy days!

I was thinking of you yesterday as I had borrowed a fab book from the library which I will definitely be investing in and, as you also liked Eithne Farry's first book and are handy at making stuff, I thought you would like this one - Chic On A Shoestring by Mary Jane Baxter. Full of refashioning, customising and some genius accessory-making ideas. x

  73. I've got one or two jewellery boxes like that but mine were more like a few dollars. I have a photo album with that sort of work on the cover too. Is yours made in Japan? I think these sorts of things were all souvenirs for western tourists visiting Japan from about the 50s onwards.
