Friday's Frock & A Few More Finds

It's Friday again so therefore the day to don a fabulous frock. Remember this Horrockses Fashions two piece I found at a jumble sale earlier this year? I'm not really a fan of Fifties fashions, the boning, nipped-in waistlines and the girly styling make me feel trussed up and miserable (a bit like a repressed 1950's housewife) but the daisy print is so cute it's almost won me over.

That's not the reason for my sour face though, I was eating sherbert Flying Saucers when we took these photos.

Want to see a few more of yesterday's finds?

This tea tray was presented free with Brooke Bond Company Ltd., on the occasion of the Queen's Ascension to the throne in February, 1952. I'm no royalist but couldn't resist for 20p.

A load of old bags including a tooled leather duffel (£1), tan leather cartridge bag (£1) and a patchwork leather shoulder bag (75p)

A 1980s leather bucket bag (50p), white leather handbag (30p) and a Welsh Tapestry handbag (£1)

A sealed pot of Philosophy ginger scrub (£1)

Original 1970's Trueform "Ibiza" wedges (40p). Sadly I'd need to chop my feet in half to stand a hope in hell of them fitting my massive hooves.

What's so special about this boring brown umbrella? I bought it from the same seller as the vintage travel iron and again was charged £1 as "it was old". He told me it was American and from the Sixties.

The American bit was right but the decade is way out. It's actually the one of the very first telescopic umbrellas, made by Growy of New York in the early 1930's.

The solid chrome handle gives it away. Stunning isn't it? Maybe it's just me.

Vintage 1950's Horrockses bolero and dress (20p, Jumble sale), Suedette platform boots (£5, local boutique), Hair flower (Handmade by me)
We're off to the pub in a bit followed by a curry. Have a brilliant weekend whatever you get up to.

  2. That Horrockses dress is AMAZING! But then I love that 50s style. You're a lucky girl having so many decades at your fingertips. The 30s umbrumbla (as my sis used to call them) is quite a find too.

Mmm, flying saucers. Want some Fizz Wiz to go with that? There's loads on my kitchen floor still...

  3. Love the outfit, really fun and cheery. I do like that orange duffel bag, orange things are jumping out at me all the time. If the Welsh bag is Melin Tregwynt, they don't come cheap new. I like the umbrella a lot, always on the lookout for vintage brollies, the quality far outweighs modern designs. Have a great weekend. X

  8. wow, I love that two-piece dress, and those bags are gorgeous, too! And so are those wedges!

I so wish we had a vintage shop or bargains near me. All we get is Primark cast-offs, not good.

  10. Dearest Vix,
    That Horrockses ensemble is AWESOME!
    20p sheesh...so expensive ;)
Wearing this ensemble you remind me of mischievous 80s pop starlet & quirky dress supremo Cyndi Lauper, which I think you’ll agree is not a bad thing at all.
What an amazing bag haul & that brolly is fabulous…it looks immaculate, so well done you for spotting that.
Have a great evening my love, as I live on the complete flipside of a rock’n’roll lifestyle I’m off to groTesco to stock up on non-alcoholic cider, spiced tea & Bombay mix myself ;)
    Lot’s of love,

  14. I just lurve those wedges; isn't it galling though when you find a pair of gorgeous vintage shoes and the blighters don't fit? I'm still haunted by the memory of a pair of 70s tan leather block heeled boots I had to leave behind in a charity shop a couple of years ago; they were far too small for me too. Sob!

  21. That's a lovely two-piece. I really like 50s style, but originals rarely fit me, they're just too small. I love the Welsh tweed bag, will be looking out for those now. a brolly from the 30s - what a find!

  22. Such cool finds! Hope you have a fab one too! xx

  23. You snapped up amazing bags, Vix - and to the usual superb price.

  26. What a marvellous find in that umbrella! I guess they obvious made them a hell of a lot more hard welling then they are today. I seem to end up getting through about three or four umbrellas a year!

  38. I can't imagine you doing the full-on 50's housewife thing - just doesn't seem like your style. I do love this dress on you though. The boots give it a tough edge, and make it more "Vix".

Love all your goodies! Particularly that little tapestry handbag.

  40. I love that dress, it's perfect, but then I love anything 1950s.

Just as soon as I find my address book (that could take some time) I've got some pretty hair bows for you... strangely enough I'll not be needing them lol. I don't have enough hair to clip them to anymore.

Have a great weekend lovely lady.

The umbrella looks so well constructed and its very exciting to find out that is older than what the seller thought it was.
Have a lovely and spicy weekend,

  49. That is the most ridiculously good haul ever. I need to go shopping with you! If you ever fancy a trip over here just let me know. You're my guru! xx

  50. That umbrella was so well spotted, and I can't believe it's in such great condition, it must never have been used - or maybe it's a case of "they don't make them like they used to"... can't imagine an umbrella made now lasting much more than a few years.
I've got small feet if you want to send those shoes to me :)

  51. You look like a young girl in that dress! :) So pretty!

  52. That umbrella is an amazing find! The purses are fun and the dress looks great on you.

  53. I bet you must be very good at standing there, keeping a straight face, when a seller is asking for £1 "because it's old" and you know you've come across more of a find than he thinks! That umbrella is lovely. Ditto the Coronation tray - that must be a total collectors' item.
And thanks for the pic of the Trueform wedges. Takes me back! x

  54. You suit the 50s, On you it's a bit punk housewife and I like that.

More magnificent finds, if I didn't like you so much I'd be supremely jealous.

Hope you are having a great weekend x

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hehe, can I copy what Rachel said? You do really suit 50's stuff but definitely in a Vix sort of way, rather than a prim and proper sort of way.

Ooh I have a handbag almost identical to that Welsh one. I got mine at a car boot from a very nice chap. Don't think I've actually used it yet though - it just sits on my bag shelf looking beautiful.

  56. aawww i adore the dress but you know me with 50's fashion ;-)) It does look cute on you though i have to say. And i can't believe you payed so little for those gorgeous kelly bags the charity shops charge a small fortune now. I love the tapestry one that is a little stunner. Hope you enjoyed you curry and are having a lovely weekend, dee xx

  61. Well I love you in that dress but then I'm a 50's gal! It's strange how different styles make you feel, I've never felt like a repressed 50s housewife ha ha!

    Love the brolly, awesome!

  62. Oh sob, that Horrockses is beautiful! Such a cheery print. The 30s umbrella really is something special xx

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ooooh at that tooled duffel bag!!

This is a very different print and style, for me to see on you hon but yes it is cute and looks fresh and summery. sigh...

  65. Love the way you style the frock with the boots - I love that style!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Damn! I had a Growy umbrella in my hand this morning with the exact same handle. I left it as I didn't know anything about it, nor was the print very nice. Oh well, you win some, you lose some. I also bought virtually the same bag from a vintage shop last week. Paid a little bit more than a £1 though! Not had much luck with the vintage times recently :( Love your Horrockses dress - that does make me jealous! Emma x

  67. The Welsh tapestry handbag is very you indeed Vix and will look fabulous clashing with one of your wonderful tweed capes. That umbrella is such a splendid find, and great facts too, it sure does prove that people don’t have a clue what they are selling xxx

  68. The hooves comment cracked me up!

I think you look great in this look, with your fabulous figure you can pull anything off. I admit I'm not a fan of 50's either but the print's won me over too.

Great finds as ever. You're going to love that ginger scrub. I'm mad on ginger. Love you xx

  71. I love those tooled leather duffels - my mum had one but sadly gave it away in a feng shui attack. Leather bags are always a good find, as they look better the more bashed they are. I used to love 50s fashion when I was about 19 or 20 as I could get away with it, but now I'm curvier it feels a bit too literal...! xx

The tea tray is very pretty! I'd have definitely picked that up!
