Fancy Some Bedroom Action?

I'm delighted you enjoyed yesterday's tour. Today's the turn of our bedroom.

Our interior design scheme was never planned, we bought (or hoisted out of skips) things that took our eye and it evolved from there. Like my wardrobe, it's a eclectic mix of vintage, second-hand and Indian market tat that reflects my personality (or at least that's what my guests tell me).

The 1950's kidney-shaped stool was found in a skip and recovered using a jumble sale curtain and car booted pom-pom braiding.

We intended this room to be the guest bedroom but after decorating it we loved it more than our own bedroom so moved in. I keep almost all my stuff in the other bedroom so this room's solely for sleeping, relaxing and reading. The most expensive thing in here is the 1920's French Corbielle bed we bought from eBay for just shy of £120.

The dressing table was given to me by an ex-landlord in the 1980's after I pleaded with him not to burn it. It's been with me for over twenty five years in various guises. Currently it's painted in Crown's Fairy Dust (a pot of which was the second most expensive item in the room).

This pre-war Guilloché dressing table set was 75p from a jumble sale, I bought the 1960's musical box from a charity shop as a teenager, it plays Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head whilst the turntable revolves.

When I met Vintage Laura's mum she told me how much she loved this lamp after seeing it on my blog. She is a beauty and well worth the £1 I paid for her. The 1960's Bambi set were 25p and the glass swan a quid.

This 1950's glazed cupboard was £4.99 from eBay and is ideal for storing some of my bags and handbags. It's painted in the same shade of Crown paint.

This is Jon's side of the bed. I never pay more than a pound for a vintage leather suitcase, there seems almost a glut of them these days, rarely a day goes by without a blogger posting about buying one at a boot sale.

There's no system to my method of picture hanging, if I like it then it gets hung on the wall, the fact that it's all fabulous (and less than a pound) being the common theme.

Jon converted this £2 1960's Lady Shick hairdryer into a groovy bedside lamp. I've since bought another one currently awaiting the same treatment. The Cole & Son wallpaper was an eBay bargain (£7 for three rolls) and Lusty Lloyd Loom bedside table was 20p from a jumble sale.

Some of my poodle collection.

The Edwardian day bed was found in an outbuilding on the property. Like the patchwork curtains the cushions and bolster cover were all me-made utilising jumble sale curtains and bedding. The one-eyed dog was Jon's pyjama case when he was a baby.

The ottoman was £5 from a charity shop, we recovered it with a jumble sale curtain to match the dressing table stool. My Mum made the Afghan blanket when she was expecting me back in 1966.

The mahogany chest of drawers are Victorian and were in the house when we moved in. They are so heavy I think they'll still be sitting there when we're long gone. They're currently housing Jon's video and cassette collection.

The 1960's bedcover was from a jumble sale. I'm not bothered about using second-hand bedding in the slightest, it's washed before it goes on the bed after all. The ottoman holds blankets and spare bedding.

The cast iron fire surround was £10 from a car boot sale and painted matt black. The original fireplace is bricked up and after opening up all the others in the house we've lost the will to do this one. It's being concealed with a dressing table mirror I found in a skip decorated with cuttings from some tatty WW2 era magazines.

Vintage floral maxi skirt (courtesy of the gorgeous Sarah) worn with a car booted Zara tee shirt (50p) I remade into a fringed boob tube, a tooled leather belt (£1, car boot sale) and piles of Indian Lamani gypsy jewellery
Hope you enjoyed the tour. The kitchen'll follow very soon.

    I love your house!
I'm not surprised that you guys decided to move into the fairy dust room, as it looks like such a magical place!
I love all your retrotastic knick-knacks, especially the turntable musical box, awesome.
Old suitcases are much more expensive here in London, I wanted one for keeping scarves in but none were less than a tenner :(
    Take care luv,

  17. its all fab! loving the wallpaper; glam AND a bargain, too. I get a good feeling when people have left furniture behind when you move in somewhere - as long as its not minging ;) - so a lovely history behind the daybed and chest of drawers. like the way your floorboards aren't "too done" - they look good like that!

I really like the 1950’s cupboard, I love seeing stuff on display- just like the clothing rail, I think it really does make for a great feature.

The wallpaper and bed are both stunning. All of your treasures on display tell so many different stories; I am so very envious of your immaculate poodle collection!

The re-vamps and hairdryer lamp are completely one of a kind, just fabulous Vix xxx

  37. Thank you for sharing, I really like your electic style. I will definitely be keeping an eye on boot sale bargains in the future! I am totally jealous of your brass bag collection on your previous post. There's a gold metal bag in a shell shape at Accessorize that I've got my eye on but might just have to check out ebay for a vintage one. xx

  38. I'm a little bit in love with your musical box. I just think it's so lovely that you hold onto things - like the blanket - my mum is brutal and chucks things out after a couple of years. Unsurprisingly me and my sister have turned into right old hoarders. Lovely room, Vix - can't wait for the kitchen xx

  50. Wow Vix... but of course...

  54. What I love is that EVERYTHING is salvaged, vintage/thrifted. Some people think its clever to have a house full of 'new' pieces with the odd second-hand piece here and there. The only way to get a home as interesting as yours is to fully embrace the vintage lifestyle. If I visited your house I'd be like a kid in a sweet shop, I love a good nose around. My mum used to be a home-help and sometimes I'd go with her. I really enjoyed looking at all the elderly ladies' perfume bottles, ornaments and trinkets.

  55. I. Am. Gobsmacked. Seriously that is one bedroom I would want to spend all day in, playing with the bambi set, the hairdryer lamp (!!!!!!!!) and the musical box. Gah! The wallpaper and ottoman are gorgeous and I remember you buying the bed and the dressing table stool - I wondered back then how on earth you could resist that incredible bed!! xoxoxoxo

  56. Oooh I love your house, it's so interesting. i coudl spend days discovering new things! Dressing table is gorgeous - I'm obsessed with them at the moment. sadly missed all the cheep ones last year in our local charity shop as I didn't have the room. Kicking myself now! The musical jewellery box is amazing too xx

  57. Loving seeing your house! Its got so much depth and character - very interesting! Love the lady light and the day bed is something I'm currently hunting for - fabulous!

  58. The bedroom is totally wonderful and I love the way that its full of special items that have a story behind them (I'm very much like you here). I'd rather have a room filled full of secondhand stuff than that brought from the high street or from some expensive designer shop. And I'm with you too on secondhand bedding - as long as it can be given a good wash etc. then its fine by me!

I'm looking forward to the tour of the kitchen next...

  63. What a special bedroom you have made! The prettiest thing in there is you! You look so beautiful, elegant, sexy and funky!

I love your stuff too. The bed and vanity are my favorites and that barbie lamp!

  68. Yay! I love the tour. I don't much like dogs but somehow am totally taken by your poodle collection. And I am supremely jealous of your glazed cabinet, having only recently been discussing with my other half getting one to house my loose or particularly beautiful shoes! I'm off to check out the post befre this - see you there!

  69. I've finally caught up with your blog after I've been away for an eternity!! Loving the "through the keyhole" tours!! You have such amazing finds, I feel a re-decoration of my bedroom and craft room coming on ;-) Oh and boy does my Mom go on about that lamp!! She loves her little mention by the way, makes her feel like a celeb ;-) xxx

  72. That dressing table is absolutely beautiful, especially in that colour. I'm not a big fan of pink (much to everyone's surprise) but I adore the dressing table, stool and the beautiful wall paper. I wish I was as interior savvy as you. It's definitely a talent.

  73. Vix I love your house!

  74. Fascinating as ever. My favourite bits are the wallpaper, cat perfume (I was outbid on one of those the other day), jon's lamp, the afghan, and the ballerina jewellery box. I had one of those when I was little and have just started thinking I'd like one again, and then one pops up on your blog! xx

  75. OMG! I love your style. The photo with the wall that has all the quirky frames rocks! I just did something similar in my hallway and I HEART it.

  77. Dearest Vix, beautiful pictures of you, I love them.

Wow! Where do I start!! Your room is gorgeous. I love all the history to everything.

I've always wanted a corbeille bed. I bought one covered in lemon silk from Ebay but my flatmate Sam didn't want to go from kingsize to double which I hadn't even noticed. I got carried away with what it looked like.

The Actor sleeps on the same side of the bed as Jon. I don't care about secondhand bedding either. I love my 1930's quilts.

I'm finding it hard to pick a favourite... The record player music box!! Amazing. The Egyptian head lamp, you know I love that. The poodles, the hairdryer lamp and your pictures look fabulous the way you've hung them.

    I love you!! xx
