Rescued From The Bin

I rescued Mum's prized lambskin coat from the bin last week. My Dad chucked it away but I managed to get to it before the bin men did. Mum loved this coat. I remember being mortified when she used to turn up in it at the school gates complete with leather thigh boots and skinny jeans, wishing she was more like the other mothers in their sensible skirts and Clarks' shoes.

Over thirty years on and they're back. I can't believe the prices these vintage coats are commanding, such as here and here. I'm thinking of having it professionally cleaned and trying my luck flogging it, it could pay for my next trip to India.

Mind you, if we have a winter as cold as the last one it could be useful.

  1. that is an incredible coat! You've styled it well! My mum has a pink suede and sheepskin number that I used to wear as a teenager, I thought it was the coolest thing ever, people used to laugh but I didnt care! Also my mum was absolutely tiny so I ended up ripping the lining on it as I'm not quite as small. I still have it though!
    Vintage is best!

  3. That is beautiful, imagine if you had not got there in time and found later that it had been binned! Eeek!
I bet looking back you are proud that your Mum was different and can appreciate her style, kids eh?

  4. Your mom sounds faaaabulous -- although yes, perhaps a bit dramatic in the eyes of a schoolkid and her peers. Are there picture posts about her in your archives?

Thanks for the comment re: Perfume in my blog. Yes! I've read it at least three times since I picked it up in '99. I've never smelled the world the same since. I'm much more attentive to layers of smells even when I walk down a neighborhood street, and how I could describe them.

  6. You look fantastic!

I don't suppose you could spare a few inches of your hair? The colour and thickness matches mine perfectly and I could really do with some!

    Your Ma sounds wonderful.

  11. Oh Vix, so glad you were able to rescue this treasure. By chuck, do you mean throw out...sacrilage! You need to hang on to this coat at least thru its first winter with you. It's so bulky tho it may wreak havoc on your wardrobe!

  12. My God! So glad you rescued that! Your Mum sounds amazing - see a penchant for glamour runs in the family even though you might not have been aware of it when you were at school. Would you really sell it? - it's gorgeous on you and it's such an awesome coat, and it must be priceless vintage having had your mum rock it!

  14. How fabulous! The prices are tremendously steep aren't they, but then I guess the coats weren't cheap in the first place. Mind you, the pics from the first seller are awful, and the coat looks positively mangy! Yours is lovely, what a great rescue.

  18. Dear Vix,
    That's a truly stunning coat!
I was watching one by Lanvin no less on eBay a few months back it was gorgeous but I forgot about it & didn't realize until the auction was finished. I was so gutted cause it only sold for £60...vintage Lanvin, Mongolian lambskin for a mere £60…crazee; someone got a splendid bargain but it wasn't me :(
I think I’d keep hold of it but that is because I am really sentimental when it comes to my mum’s old clobber.
You look so fabulous today my darling!

p.s. Hmm, dad should be sent to the naughty step for five minutes me thinks ;)

  29. Love this look Vix. So great with the shorts and tights. Very cool cool cool. As for selling it, wow, they are asking a lot for them! I don't think I could if I were you...but maybe...I can't even sell vintage clothes I pic up here and there on esty because I can't bear to part with anything! Though you could buy a lot of cool stuff in India (because holidaying is all about shopping, yes?)

  30. I daren't even look at those links - I'm guessing they're horrendously expensive? Are you sure you want to sell it? It seems like such a shame to let it go, especially after you've rescued it from the bin. And on that note, I hope your Dad isn't chucking out any other treasures?

  31. Dear Vix, you look hot in it! What a great rescue. You should either keep it or have it cleaned and use the money to go away. I would probably keep it. Love the purple blouse too, nice styling. I'd much rather have a jazzy mum than one in Clark's shoes, but it was different when we were children wasn't it? xx

  32. Wish I could see more of your blouse because that's what I think I may really like! :) Denim and leggings are still so killer!

  33. Love the shaggy coat and purple blouse combo! I can't believe your pa was going to throw it out.

  35. Fantastic coat...had to be rescued. You'd get a good price for it at the moment.
Your mum sounds fab. My mum used to get me from primary school dressed in cheesecloth and purple suede boots and I used wish she dressed like everyone else's mother! Never much chance of that and now I think how glad I am she didn't!xx

  36. I love the story about your Mum turning up at the school gates, and you know if that coat brings you a trip to India, then it really is a lovely end to the tale xx

  37. Fantastic jacket. I don't know if you get temperatures below 20° C any time during the year. Otherwise, a good way to maintain sheepskin is to hang it outside a very cold day and then flogging it.

I lived a real country life as a child. My mum forced me and my sister to wear matching hippie outfits, tag along to vegetarian cooking classes and generally live a do everything yourself life. Oh, how I love her for that now :)

  38. Great coat it looks wonderful and you won't part with it I bet!!
