New Boots and an Old Cape

One of a pair of 19th century Hungarian glazed cupboards from my local curio shop. Kirsty Allsop bought the other one.

I was thrilled to see a henna-haired, roll-up smoking hippy lady selling at Saturday's car boot sale. I don't waste time checking out every stallholder and make a beeline for the alternatively-dressed and/or older ladies as they tend to have most interesting stuff.

I wasn't disappointed as I found this vintage beaded cape for £1....

No 7's Grey Skies Nail Polish as recommended by Em

.....and these £1 knee-high suede boots which she'd never worn and the inners were still packed with tissue paper.

Have a peek at the other things I bought from her....

two American-made crepe dresses (£1 each) and a bakelite framed handbag (50p)

High-waist harem jeans (Sample sale £2), Country Casuals belt (Charity shop 50p)
*I've got a bit of a blip with my Blogger account at the moment and lots of the comments I've left on blogs I follow have vanished. I have reported the problem so please don't think I'm ignoring you.*

  1. Ha ha, I do the same at the boot sales, I avoid the baby stalls and head for the people I like the look of. It generally works, then I wander past the others just incase!
That cape is beautiful and those boots for a quid are amazing! Love your cabinet too, damn that Kirsty's eyes for getting the other one!

  3. Yay. Autumnal and not a sixties maxi-dress (coz I'm not such a fan of orange patterns as you, ahem). God, I LOVE this ensemble. The detail on the belt loops and the fringe-thing. Those boots. Those nails. Those rings. This look is so utterly you and nobody else but you....

  4. You see, if I wore this outfit, I'd just look daft, but you make it look fabulous as always!

Do you have any tips on telling what's vintage and what isn't, especially at jumble sales etc? I know my styles, but I'm not sure I could pick out the modern copies from the genuine thing.

  12. You look fantastic! What brilliant buys. It's true what you say about sellers. There's a lady at my local boot sale with red hair and delicate little tattoos on her face, and I always find something brilliant and strange to buy from her.

  20. I use exactly the same booting tactics as you - do you get a rush as soon as you're at the boot sale? I do. I'll have a quick scan round and target the likely looking stalls/people first. Amazing finds -I LOVE the boots and I'll be buying a bottle of that No7 nail varnish when I'm next in town.

BTW - thanks for your fab comment on my blog; its great to have someone on the same wavelength xxx

  25. Oh, utter bizarreness with the comments! One of your recent comments on my blog turned up in my spam comments section today. And I can comment from home, woop! Haven't been able to do that for months - here's hoping it's a permanent thing.

The cape is stunning and those boots - oooh, what a tremendous find! Rather lovely nail varnish too. I was swithering between that and the other grey one when I had my last voucher to spend and went for the other one. Hope it's as nice as that gorgeous shade.

  31. Amazing find, Vix. I remember once getting a pair of Chanel pumps for 1 or 2 pounds on a Devon market from a lady who obviously left her high-stress, high-flyer London life behind to find peace and quietness in Totnes.
At that time we stayed with a friend shared a house with Mike Edwards, the former cello player from ELO, who died being hit by a giant hay bale yesterday... He was the most wonderful guy and Sarah listened to him playing the cello for hours. It stayed with me the whole day yesterday (though I have to say if we had said to him: Mike, you are going to be killed by a giant hay bale in a few years, I think he would have found that funny.) Sorry Vix, I'm babbling. Back to work! xxx

  47. The cape is nothing short of fabulous. I love the beading detailing, so exquisite.

I am useless at identifying interesting sellers at boot sales, but hear so many wonderful tales of them being there, selling delightful treasures. I think my next task is to slow down my pace and have a good look around not just at the midst of stalls but the people behind them xx
