Old Hat

Yeah, you guessed it, I was far too excited not to wear one of my latest car boot finds for my weekly trip into town. As it was peeing it down with rain this morning I reckoned this wide-brimmed hat would be a nice alternative to my range of  trusty vintage brollies.

The outer part of the hat was a bit dusty so I gave it a good going over with a clothes brush and then held it over the steam of a boiling kettle to knock it back into shape.

I live in a down-at-heel working class town in the West Midlands where the majority of women slob around in Ugg-ly boots, sportswear and ill-fitting denim. It always amazes me when people say they wished that they had the nerve to dress like me, what the heck's stopping them? Dressing up is fun and gets you noticed. If I get funny looks I can't say I notice. I feel good and that's all that matters.

I'm wearing my new hat with a fishtail hem striped jacket (Fashion sample stall £1.50), some vintage men's evening pants I revamped into shorts (Salvation Army 50p), Patent bag (Xmas pressie from Jon a couple of years ago) and some leather ankle boots (Miss Selfridge sale £20)

My neck scarf was from the same man who bought the hat from, he let me have a case of 17 vintage scarves and 22 embroidered ladies hankies for £4, what a sweetie! In fact, I bought loads of beautiful things from him.....I'll share more finds very soon.
Right, I'm off to do battle with my wardrobe and select an outfit fit for a night out on the town....wish me luck.

Have a fabulous friday night, whatever you're up to!

  5. "what the heck's stopping them?"

exactly!! I always wonder that myself! Confidence, perhaps?

adore the top. this is a great look for you. Oh, all those scarves! you should do a pick of where you keep your clothes one day. And by "where" I mean, "what entire room/extra house built for the sole purpose of housing your clothing". ;-)

  8. Old hat or not, it still looks awesome on you, in fact your whole outfit does!
People don't wear enough fabulous hats in my opinion...beanies & baseball caps don't count, too bleeding pedestrian, a bit like the mUGG boots & tacky trackies.
Have a lovely night out on the town :)

  9. Have a great night!!! Love the hat and entire outfit!!! Thanks for the steam tip. What a great purchase with the scarves! Yipee! I too used to always hear "I wish I could dress like you" and I wondered why not? The usual answer was my husband wouldn't be seen with me. I thought "what a crappy husband!" My hubs only says "you look so much better than I do"- such a sweetie. Have a great weekend. When I make it to England, I am gonna look u up for some car boots sales. Sounds like my cup of tea!!!

  10. I adore the hat! I want a summer hat with a big floppy brim like that - ideal for keeping the sun out of your eyes and then when the rain starts you're safe from that too!

  11. Looking fab as usual. Coventry is very similar in that ugg-ly boots and sportswear seem to be order of the day... however at the pub the other night I spotted a whole handful of well dressed vintage looking ladies... perhaps they were tourists lol!

  23. Love the whole thing. Shorts are amazing. I am NEVER going back to trousers and I'm proud to say I've always hated jeans.

Why don't I wear more hats? I used to be crazy about them in the 70s!!! You have given me some ideas here, m'lady.
