The promised hot weather and sunshine wasn't forthcoming on Friday morning and it was cold enough for a jacket when we walked down to the baths. However, emerging from Spoons after breakfast, it was starting to warm up.
I wore a 1970s St Michael vest top, a me-made Anokhi fabric maxi skirt and my Jesus Saves 1970s belt. As I'm an aethist I'm hoping there's a goalkeeper called Jesus playing in the World Cup to make it more relevant!
It was warm enough to sit in the garden when we got home - which we did!
In the recent National Trust members magazine, they'd shared a couple of recipes from one of their publications, Irresistible Salads. Jon made both and we enjoyed them so much that we ordered the book. This Lemon, Rocket and Burrata Pasta Salad was another winner.
After the fabulous opening ceremony at Mexico's spectacular Azteca Stadium on Thursday evening and Mexico's well-deserved win, we're now well and truly invested in the World Cup, 2026. On Friday night it was the turn of Canada who drew with Bosnia & Hertzigovina. Neither of us had the stamina to stay up for the 2am USA vs Paraguay match afterwards.
On Saturday morning we watched the game over breakfast.
After the match we went for a walk around the block before spending the rest of the morning gardening. I wore this 1970s Oasis Trading maxi skirt with a me-made halter top (made using the same Anokhi fabric as yesterday's skirt) and road-tested my newly charity-shopped Tevas, which were an absolute dream to walk in.
Although it wasn't exactly tropical I did manage to lie outside reading until late in the afternoon. I started my 43rd book of the year, Philip Kerr's A Man Without Breath. Set during WWII, charismatic Nazi-hating Bernie Gunther, a Berlin police detective, has been enlisted into the German War Crimes Bureau to investigate the Katyn Massacre of 1940. Josef Goebels wants proof of Russian involvement in the hope of destroying the Western Alliance but the truth turns out to be far more damaging. The Bernie Gunther novels (there are 14 in all) are currently being serialised for television and will star the fantastic Jack Lowden on Apple TV later this year.
Saturday night was another (late) night of football although we went to bed before the Scotland match, watching it on catch-up on Sunday morning. Continuing with my run of wearing me-made clothes I wore this dress which I made in 2014 using a pair of vintage Grace Sullivan for Heals' Treetop screen-printed curtains and a Kenzo for Butterick dressmaking pattern from 1971.
We went for our usual walk around the block before spending the rest of the day outside (and the evening in front of the football).
Monday was swimming day and, ever the optimist, I left the house with bare arms and sandals. There were issues with the main pool and the management opened the brine baths early so we regulars could get our fix. We used to use the brine until swapping allegiance to the gala pool. I'd forgotten how hard it is swimming in 34°C salted water, it was like wading through treacle!
I wore a 1960s Jantzen beach dress (nylon with padded boobs) with my denim waistcoat. I tried sitting in the garden for an hour or so when we got home but was defeated by the cold wind.
Later on we had to go the hospital for my annual appointment with the Opthalmic department - happily there's no change so I'm still just verging on borderline with my Glaucoma.
The evening was, once again, dominated by the footie!
On Tuesday (today!) I had an appointment with Michael the osteopath and, with a shared love of travel and football, we got on like a house on fire. I wasn't expecting miracles but I felt so much better after I'd had my treatment. At home I realised I'd climbed the stairs like a normal person rather than clinging on to the bannister and going up a step at a time.
Needless to say, I didn't walk round to the clinic in my black lycra cycling shorts & sports bra - although that seems the outfit of choice for the majority of women these days - instead opting for this embroidered linen sundress from Zara (via the charity shop).
Liz, back from her holiday in St Ives, popped round and we sat outside chatting in the sunshine. I tried to sunbathe for a few hours after lunch but it clouded over....grrr!
We're both already nervous about tomorrow. Come on, England!

I love the three lions flag. I fear the George cross and the Union flag have both been tarnished by the way they are used at the moment. That treetops dress is fabulous, but this weather is not, is it? I keep hoping for better days xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm in and out of the garden so often I'm getting dizzy - sweltering one minute, shivering the next. Getting dressed is so difficult!
DeleteSome of our neighbours are hanging St George's Flags up with "No to Reform" and "Love Football, Hate Racists" written on them...a great way to reclaim our flag from the shaggers. xxx
I really hope the benefit of your treatment lasts for as long as possible xx
ReplyDeleteMe, too Flis! I'm definitely walking a bit better! xxx
DeleteYour flag is magnificent! As are your roses, and I'm very fond of that Kenzo for Butterick dress!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sheila! xxx
DeleteFabulous outfits as usual. I always loved it when you made dresses out of curtain material and still remember Thomas the Tank Engine!
ReplyDeleteAlso like to see that the little row houses are changing into businesses. A great use of space.
JanF
Thanks, Jan! I sod that Thomas The Tank engine dress in the end. i made it especially to wear at Indietracks, the festival held at the Midlands Railway Museum, sadly the festival no longer runs so I thought it was time to say goodbye!
DeleteThose houses are so beautiful, I love that they're used for commercial purposes, much more atmospheric than some blamd purpose built box. xxx
Wow Vix, you sew beautifully,
ReplyDeleteI really liked your maxi skirt!!
Your living room looks fantastic,
it's like it's inviting you to sit down!!
Thanks so muhc, Katerina! xxx
DeleteYour World Cup routine has such a great rhythm to it, and that joke about finding a goalkeeper named Jesus to justify the vintage belt gave me a good laugh. Turning vintage curtains into a Kenzo dress is incredibly clever, especially since your whole wardrobe seems like a masterclass in styling second-hand and handmade pieces. It’s amazing to hear the osteopath visit made such a difference with the stairs, so hopefully that relief lasts through the tournament while you’re glued to the screen. Good luck to England today; the pre-match nerves are definitely part of the fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Melody! xxx
DeleteOh, I hope better days at the pool are near. Great to see your braids...and glad the walking it better. Wishing you much fun with the World Cup and other summer delights. BTW you are so creative in everything you do. Best wishes on the joy of summer days. Thanks so much for being here.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ellie! It's fab to see a comment from you, I hope you and yours are well. xxx
DeleteFor me it's question of Eat, Sleep, Ignore Football AND all Sport ... Repeat. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI do like your and your neighbours version of the England flag.
Hahaha! We're doing the football watching for you!
DeleteIt's great to see so much support for our lads and to reclaim our fabulous flag. xxx
I love the treetops fabric - what a beautiful dress! The linen zara dress is beautiful too.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your osteo visit was so helpful and that your eyes are not any worse. My family has a similar eye history and I have regular checks.
Thanks so much, Tanya Eve! They have that Treetops fabric in the V&A, it's pretty special isnt it? xxx
DeleteAny improvement to your hip has to be s good feeling just so you can better keep up with the things you enjoy. I had my first PT on hip so will be diligent about the exercises. It's a hunt for finding FIFA games on the various streaming services, but watched Messi's. Ive still to see a IK game. Reading, Football, and your fab dresses seem like good distractions.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sam, the change is remarkable. I can't remember the last time I felt this good!
DeleteIt is all about the exercises and staying mobile, use it or lose it and all that.
Messi was magnificent (as always) and I'm on a high from last night's result! xxx
Your summer dresses look fantastic on you. And the orange-red nail polish looks very pretty.
ReplyDeleteThe salad must taste delicious. It already looks so appetizing.
I'm making a lot of salads at the moment, too. :)
Thank you! I do love summer dressing and seem a bit obsessed with orange this year!
DeleteI could eat salad all year round. xxx
I have to be honest and admit that I.hadn't even realised.it had started! Somehow I have produced a football loving son. He's inherited that from my Dad. They both enjoy going to the local matches. It's the.first time.my Dad has had a fellow.fan in.the.family.
ReplyDeleteNo way! Aren't your neighbours flying Three Lions flags? It was cricket when I was growing up - my maternal grandpa was a scout for Warwickshire and my Dad's cousin was the England captain! xxx
DeleteI love my osteopath! He got me from sobbing with sciatic pain. to living normally. Love your sewn-by-Vix clothes. And to be a traitor.... I never watch any football!! Including the All Blacks! (rugby) which of course is a national crime here in New Zealand.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the change, R! I was hoping that I'd be a little more flexible but the difference is incredible. I love international footie (male and female) and some Olympic sports but every thing leaves me cold - tennis especially! xxx
DeletePreciosa tu falda!! Y las Rosas 🌹 Saludos!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Vix, I'm glad to see that you are getting some relief after your osteopath visit- long may it continue. Like others I love the clever use you have made of vintage curtain fabric though I am sorry to hear that the Thomas the Tank Engine dress has shunted off to a new home. I've always loved a good halter neck style and am puzzled why they are not so popular these days. Talking of spy books, have you read Kate Atkinson's ' Transcription'? It is my bookclub's book of this month and very enjoyable too. The roses seem to be having a good year for us all. Enjoy the football!
