Seven Days is Too Long

This week I'll be obsessively checking my NHS app for the results of last week's X-rays. I won't lie, with my limited mobility, life has been a bit of a challenge lately. Up until four months ago, I could walk fifteen miles in a day without a second thought but now a fifteen minute walk to the pool and back pretty much wipes me out. When I'm swimming I'm invincible, people comment on my speed and my technique, impressed that I can swim a mile in 41 minutes but, on dry land, using a stick to support my useless hip, I'm regarded with pity, I walk so badly that people step aside to let me pass, cars stop and wave me across the road and even the town centre smackheads have started to ask me if I'm okay.

Still, onwards and upwards, I never fail to find joy from exploring my extensive wardrobe and getting dressed each day.

Last Tuesday I wore a Seventies Soul co-ord (as the kids call 'em) I bought from Vinted last year topped with the amazing vintage blush pink suede waistcoat I bought from Rachael, who sells on Vinted and turned out to be a regular reader/commenter along with my American -made Frye Campus boots and a necklace I bought in Jaisalmer.

By way of a change Nikki came over to Walsall. Jon drove down to the station where we picked her up and drove back to ours as she'd never been before.

Then we headed to Spoons in Walsall for a couple of pints of IPA and their legendary sweet potato, chickpea and spinach curry.

If you've ever visited the Black Country you'll know how friendly the natives are, it's impossible to go anywhere and not strike-up a conversation with a stranger, most of the time it's lovely although we could have done without the elderly chap in Spoons who announced...Look at the state of you, your hip's gone, ay it? before regailing us with his, his late mother's and all his neighbours' ailments for the entire time we were in there.

Thanks for a fab day, Nikki  - see you soon!

My appointment for x-rays at Walsall Manor hospital was at 8.45am on Wednesday morning (five weeks since I'd visited my GP, beating the NHS target for a 6 week wait). Considering it was rush hour, the roads weren't busy, we got there 15 minutes early. I was seen straightaway so we were back at home by 9am. We went for a lunchtime swim but forfeited a look around the charity shops as we were starving. I wore this vintage Mayur Indian cotton dress and wished I'd worn a jacket, it wasn't the warmest of days.

I had a parcel to drop off at Ajay's on Thursday morning and Jon joined me for a stroll down the road.

I wore my 1970s Oasis Trading block printed wraparound skirt with this All About Audrey recycled sari tunic, a combination I'd not tried before and rather liked them together.

I was delighted to discover that the first of our Oriental Poppies had flowered. We'd had a disapointing show last year as the border was so overgrown but after a mad weeding session earlier in the month they've got a bit more space to do their thing.

Our friends Lynn and Brendan popped round later and we spent most of the afternoon chatting. Later it was the final of Race Across The World, the best series yet and we were delighted with the result!!

After two weeks of unseasonable cold, torrential rain, thunderstorms, high winds and hail, I was a bit sceptical when the BBC forecast glorious sunshine and sizzling temperatures for the weekend but true to their word, Friday was sensational! Inspired by our poppies I dressed in my orange sari silk All About Audrey maxi dress.

After our early morning swim, breakfast in Spoons and a wander around the chazzas we spent the rest of the day sunbathing.

And the sun encouraged another poppy throw off her fuzzy jacket and reveal her beauty.

On Saturday morning, after walking to the post box to post a letter, I stripped off my Daughters of India maxi dress (via Vinted, obviously!), changed into a bikini and spent the day in the garden. clearing another overgrown border and finishing Honour by Elif Sharaf, the book I'd started the previous day.

The temperatures are similar to those in Greece so it's the perfect opportunity to give my holiday wardrobe a trial run. I brought my Tevas out of hibernation on Friday (they were last worn in Tenerife back in December) and my feet couldn't be happier.

It was another day of sunbathing on the lawn ...after Jon had mowed it. I started reading Susanna Gregory's Restoration thriller, Intrigue in Covent Garden.

As the pool was closed for the Bank Holiday,  we swapped our usual Monday swim with a Sunday one. It was another scorcher of a day so I tried a other potential holiday dress, my Naked Generation Aurora kaftan, bought from Vinted for a song. I bought my headscarf in India so long ago that the Paise coins printed on it are no longer legal currency.

I hand-washed some of my white cotton clothing and hung it on the line in the sunshine. I finished yesterday's book and started on An Island in Greece: On the Shores of Skopelos, a reprint of the Michael Carroll travel memoir originally published in 1965 (decades before Mama Mia made the island a tourist hotspot) . Jon brought out some ice cold Mojitos, which were very welcome.

The cats are loving the sunshine and are eating like horses!

After tea, the sun had disappeared behind the London Planes, so I spent an hour in the garden, tackling the overgrown area beside the Kinky shed before joining Jon in the lounge to watch the rest of Broadchurch. What should we watch next? I'm thinking the latest Yellowstone spin-offs, I'm missing Beth & Rip.

On Monday I was up at 5am and it was already 18°C.  After seeing to the cats and topping up the birdbath I spent half an hour on my Wii Fit before Jon joined me for breakfast. After a stroll down to the Lidl lockers Jon tackled the Laurel bush (no nesting, we checked!) whilst I took me usual position on the lawn.

I didn't wear this Dilli Grey dress last year so it felt new and exciting when I put it on for my walk this morning. Hmmm...another potential holiday dress, I wonder! We've got a huge luggage allowance but, you know us, it'll be carry-on only, baby!

Thanks for reading, see you soon!

Love your new dresses. Holiday packing is so exciting.
How cool that Nikki came across. I've just remembered we didn't have time to go Mrs Kaur's. You know what that means! 😀
I'm a massive Susanna Gregory fan. I love her Matthew Bartholomew medieval series.
Those poppies are just stunning. I'm absolutely loving sitting in a bikini in the garden. Heaven! Xxx

  4. I'm so sorry to hear about your poor hip and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the results of your X-rays.
I'm so glad you're still finding joy and comfort in your wardrobe. Plus, you've got a holiday to look forward to! I bet you can't wait.
Your reference to what the kids call co-ords made me smile, as I mentioned more or less the same in today's post (it's been a while since we did synchronized posting!).
Although it's hard to choose, my favourites must be the vintage Mayur Indian cotton dress - blue definitely suits you - and the orange All About Audrey maxi dress and the Dilli Grey dress you are wearing today.
I think we're sharing weather, by the way. Much to warm for me - and particularly for Jos - already, I'm afraid, but perfect for you! xxx

Love that blue kaftan and love your wraparound skirt with fab blouse combo (so beautiful colours together). And love that you give your holiday clothes 'a trial run' and wore all those magnificent maxi dresses!, looking fabulous!
    Thanks for those little videos!

  8. So much a life inhibiting problem with your hip. There are websites that help you find the shortest waiting lists as you can go to any hospital that serves the NHS. Friend of my friend chose a hospital quite a way from her but had her surgery in 3 months and it went very well. If she waited here it would have been over a year. Well worth exploring if it is needed. You deserve to be able to walk easily and freely.

    1. Thanks so much! I still haven't got a diagnosis, the X rays are with the GP but nobody's read them yet so I still don't have a prognosis - I'm struggling to stay patient!
I think I had the option to have my last hip replacement elsewhere but hung on for having it done in Walsall - having visitors kept me sane during the hellish week I was in hospital, it might be tricky if I'm miles away from home.
I hope your friend is doing well. xxx

  9. I'm so sorry you're hip is so painful and I hope the wait for healing surgery is not too long. I'm glad water gives you ease. Your wardrobe just gets lovelier. We've got a mini heatwave here too, started yesterday and will be for the week ahead. I'm finally feeling like my ribs aren't poking me from the inside out so didcsome yard care and hope to do more tomorrow. I need some color. Take care of yourself.

  14. Sorry to hear about the hip, Vix. Sounds very painful and crossing everything that you get the results asap and treatment very swiftly. It did make me laugh about the old guy dominating your time with Nicky to tell you about the world and his dog who'd had hip problems! Rude and a bit unhelpful there, although assume he meant well. All of your outfits are stunning. Really like the headscarves. Looking forward to seeing where in Greece you are going (presuming it's Greece :)) We've just finished watching 2 Weeks in August but then read it was set in Gozo and Malta! We really enjoyed 2 Weeks in August, I thiught it would be a bit tame but loved the Greek Mythology and hedonism. Like you, we thought the location was stunning, even though it wasn't in Greece! Yes, you guessed correctly, we are off to Greece and - most exciting - to a new island!!! Counting the weeks! xxx

  19. More glorious outfits here. Sorry to hear that your hip is giving you such problems. Hopefully you will get a new hip soon. I thought of you when the heat began to rise and rise, thinking you would be sunbathing. As a fair skinned person I have to avoid the sun, I just burn or get a heat rash. It's a shame as I do love the sunshine, it lifts the mood. I read Honour by Elif Shafak too last week. What a fine writer. I have just ordered three of her books from the library as she rarely turns up in CS.

I'm desperate to wear head scarves, I have tonnes but they will always - without fail - slip straight off my head almost immediately. What's the secret to them staying on you? If you spare a second, I'd love to see a video short clip / tiktok of how you tie them so they remain in place! Mine are all silky scarves so maybe that's the issue??! 22. Hello Vix, having just returned from Corfu, where it was hot but the pool was ice cold, the current London heatwave was a shock! hotter than Greece. I love your Audrey poppy coloured silk dress, I think it's my favourite colour at the mo and it looks great on you. The hip problem must be really getting you down - like you I can swim well and love it (currently going every day) but I have tendonitis in my left leg which causes me a lot of pain. When it's bad I wear a velcro brace which helps a bit but the physio offered by the NHS was pathetic and Ive done better on my own with weights and rowing. I hope you get an offer of hip surgery asap and will be able to enjoy long walks on holidays again. Betty

    1. I can't wait to hear about your Corfu adventures, Betty! Paleokastritsa with its huge cliff and deep waters has the coldest waters in the island - the swimming pools feel almost tropical in comparison!
Its so frustrating when we do so much to keep fit and put bodies let us down. I had to beg for physio after my first hip replacement. I was amazed that it wasn't routinely offered (apart from a few exercises post-op) but I was told that normally a hip replacement was done on elderly patients who were well past the point of being fit and active whereas I was a freak at just 39! xxx

  23. Hi Vix, I'm glad you have the chance to wear some of your summer favourites in this early heatwave. The colours of the Seventies Soul outfit are just gorgeous and with a bit of suede too. The border pattern on the Daughters of India sundress is really lovely and looks very light and airy. I have returned home after a long stay visiting family ( in sad circumstances) and am glad to have some cooler days now. I did make good friends though of the ladies in one of the local charity shops and added to my wardrobe at the same time. Sending you best wishes for your hip problems- it sounds awful for you. X

  28. Reduced mobility sounds like a nightmare. I can see how swimming makes you feel better. In the water, so many of our problems can disappear...I'm crossing my fingers it all works out. I know you're really active and it must be terrible not being able to go for long walks. My health has been a bit up and down this spring with my illness, but most of the time I can still go for long walks at least once a week and these walks often do wonders for my health (both mental and physical).
