Betwixt and Between

Hello! Hope you've survived the festering festive season with your sanity intact. Here's what we've been up to since I last posted.

Remember me mentioning that Jon was redecorating the utility room? It's finally finished. It's goodbye to plain white walls and the boring 1950s wall-mounted cupboard...

And hello to marvellously moody jungle vibes...

As soon as I spotted this leopard and cheetah wallpaper in B&Q I knew we had to have it. It's textured, ideal for disguising our wonky 275 year old walls.

The wall-mounted shelf is the top of Jon's grandparents Welsh dresser, previously painted white but now, on our friend Lynn's suggestion, a dramatic aubergine (matching some of the elements of the wallpaper).

The existing tiles, salvaged from a Edwardian washstand, sit more harmoniously alongside the wallpaper than the previously clinically white walls.

The cast iron brackets (made locally in the Black Country!) are supporting shelves Jon made using the wood from the old cupboard. The mirror above the sink used to be attached to my old dressing table.

If you've been reading my blog for a while you'll have seen my drying dolly Jon made using a cot he bought at a car boot sale and some broom handles from off the market. Eagle-eyed readers may also recognise my new broom cupboard doors, they're from the 1940s wardrobe in the spare room. I rarely closed it so it made more sense for Jon to use them downstairs.

I'd rather celebrate the Winter Solstice (and the return to the light) than Xmas but we're always happy to throw a party and with Tony & my brother, Marcus, both off work, once again we hosted the Dead Relatives Society festive bash on 25th December.

I wore this 1960s poppy print velvet maxi dress by John Marks which I bought from a vintage stall back in the 2000s when Liz and I used to go to the Clothes Show Live at Birmingham's NEC. The Kuchi headpiece was a gift from Jon a few years ago.

When I was laying the table on Xmas morning, I remembered that I'd used our usual table covering to make a skirt so dragged out this vintage velvet curtain. I made the crackers using a kit I found in a charity shop the previous week (filled with bespoke presents rather than useless plastic tat).

The starters: Melon with Iberian ham for the boys and Cheshire cheese infused with cranberries for me, drizzled with balsamic vinegar. The plates are Denby's Arabesque, one of my parents' wedding presents in 1966.

Jon made chicken and chorizo pies for the meat eaters and a mushroom and leek pie for me, with which we served roast parsnips, honey roasted carrot batons and German-style sweet and sour cabbage. My years of corporate hospitality, managing million pound budgets stood me in good stead, the portion sizes were perfect and there was no waste!

Pudding was my brother's homemade brandy butter, a Yule log, cherry liquors and Polish gingerbread but it was devoured before I could take any photos.

Entertainment was a 1980s themed quiz, retro tunes, a Cold War Steve jigsaw puzzle and William jumping on the table halfway through our dinner, high on Trump's catnip. After the guests left Jon and I retired to the lounge with the rest of the wine  and watched Spike Lee's superb BlackkKlansman on the BBC i-player.

Not Gordon enjoyed his Iberico ham, William enjoyed savaging Trump (last year's Xmas present).

On Boxing Day I wore a vintage gold crochet maxi dress bought from a car boot sale in 2007 and spent the day listening to music,

Reading....Liz bought me Janina Ramirez's Femina for my birthday. It's superb!

But any attempts to crack on with my Cold War Steve jigsaw puzzle were thwarted...

Our evening entertainment was a couple more films, the chilling Zone of Interest and unlikely heist movie, The Mastermind.

On Saturday I wore this 1960s velvet maxi dress by Samuel Sherman - another car boot find from the 2000s. After I'd dropped off some Vinted parcels off at the corner shop I spent the rest of the day reading. During the evening we watched Spike Lee's latest, the thrilling Highest 2 Lowest.

On Sunday we packed some sandwiches, filled the flask and headed to Staffordshire for a wander around one of our favourite National Trust properties. Dressed in a bastard massive sheepskin hat, vintage Hindu Kush Afghan dress & coat I stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the waxed jackets and puffa coats and was inundated with compliments. (Blog to follow!)

After catching up with the festive Pottery Throwdown, Sunday night's film was the superb Good Vibrations, the true story of Terri Hooley, a record shop owner who was instrumental in developing Belfast's punk scene during the Troubles. (Currently on the BBC i-player.)

I was starting to get very twitchy with the pool closed for Xmas and was beyond excited to pop down this morning for my swimming fix this morning. The necklace Liz bought me for my birthday seemed an appropriate choice along with the vintage lurex maxi skirt Ann and Jos gave me in 2022 (and I usually only ever wear at festivals).

I'm way behind on blog reading. Thanks so much for leaving comments on my last couple of posts and please accept my apologies for not replying, normal service shall be resumed soon!

  1. What a transformation of your utility room And serving an alternative Christmas dinner. We had ham, new potatoes, eggs and veg, then picky bits for tea. We were at daughter's so a nice time was had. Went for a cold walk in the afternoon to try and get Baby C to sleep, it wasn't successful. Just back from the garden centre which is a Blue Diamond one, and picked up some reduced cards, beer for OH and some tomato seeds for him too - Outdoor Girl, the only ones he swears by. Its quite nice to be back to normal. Xx

    1. Hello Gill! I'm glad you had a lovely Xmas. I didn't know there was a new baby in the family.
Outdoor Girl, I know the cosmetics from the 1970s, I didn't know there was a range of tomatoes with the same name. We've given up with tomatoes, They are always a dismal failure with the lack of sunshine in our shady garden and spending too much of the Summer away at festivals but its great if you've got the time and a greenhouse, nothing beats a home grown tom! xxx

      Delete
    2. Hi Vix, no greenhouse now, so Outdoor Girl is as reliable as an outdoor tomato in the UK can be. Baby C is their foster. They are taking on 0-2 and he's the first. Had a very poor start, weighed only 3lbs, mother drug and alcohol dependent, already had 3 babies taken away from her. He is now 5lbs 4oz, still tiny but thriving. Iris is very good with him. Their cats are indifferent to him, but Miss Sheva was not happy! I was holding him and she hissed and spat at me. Xx

    3. Interesting fact about that tomato!
That's a wonderful thing that they're doing, giving that poor baby a chance in life after such a poor start. I bet the baby isn't a lot bigger than Sheva, no wonder she's not happy about him. xxx

  3. Hey Vix, Lovely to see you and the fam. I enjoyed your travel posts and of course all your fashion and renos. We are coming into the heat of summer, you would love it 30 degrees and above, sunshine galore. I've been reading up a storm and smashing out the spy thrillers, and watching Stonehouse, which links up Melbourne and Walsall, he was a dodgy bugger. The cats looked settled and lording over you and Jon (as they should).

    1. Hello Diane! It's so good to hear from you. I'm so envious of your heat and sunshine, fancy a house swap?!
Stonehouse was fantastic, although I was only eight at the time, I remember my Mum being gripped by his disappearance and collecting the newspaper cuttings. He was a dodgy old bugger and played brilliantly by the lovely Matthew MacFadyen - always my favourite spy in Spooks! We've got the sequel to The Night Manager to look forward to on the Beeb this week. I'm pretty sure Le Carré never wrote a follow-up!
Sending lots of love to the other side of the world! xxx

    2. Haha yep, I'll take your den of decadence with a garden I can swan around in like forest witch and you can have my pokey 1 bedroom flat. I'm looking forward to Night Manager as well, I just watched Season 3 of Hidden Assets which had some scenes in Bilbao, so now I want to go to Bilbao.

      Delete
    3. Ha! I could live with that, might encourage Jon to tidy up after himself with less space! I didn't know there was a third series of Hidden Assets, I shall see if we can track it down. You can get really cheap flights to Bilbao from Birmingham, could be dangerous! Xxx

    1. Thanks, Betty! He's done a cracking job, it looks so much better now! His bespoke broom cupboard is a revelation, too - I no longer worry about being blinded by an errant mop head whenever I get the feather duster or the dustpan out!
That's a great idea with the cracker pressies! xxx

  6. Oooh Vix - all you need is a vase full of ostrich feathers and the Biba vibe is complete! https://www.londonmuseum.org.uk/collections/london-stories/inside-big-biba-department-store/ absolutely love it - oooh aubergine paint - yes!
We had plans to revamp our kitchen but due to the dramatic leg breaking incident - it never happened - so this gives me heart! Christmas never really happened either (in terms of deck the halls - there was however feasting and gift giving) and I really liked it to be honest.
Your beautiful outfits are outstanding as usual - I could never wear those glorious sleeves (well literally, because arm-crutches) without incident lol. I can now (gingerly) get in the attic so I’m bringing down clothes from my racks (or rather throwing them down the loft hatch). Weirdly, I have lost a lot of weight this year and now have loads to donate once the New Years declutter/deluge has passed (many of the chazzers here are not taking donations at the mo because they are heaving) .
Femina looks very interesting - I’m considering The Story of Art without Men https://www.thegreatwomenartists.com/book - I’ve been picking it up and putting it down every time I go in Waterstones!
Looking forward to your Staffordshire visit post

    1. Hello Elaine! I'm swooning over that Biba image, I didn't think I wanted a purple carpet until I saw that one! I do have a Morrisware vase with peacock feathers in the lounge, maybe it'd enjoy sitting alongside the Baby Bio and Ecover on the shelving?!
I'm so sorry to read about the broken leg and i'm glad your pared down Xmas was fun.
Yes, those sleeves aren't great with crutches (I had to rethink my style after my hip replacement). The lucky charity shop getting your clothes. Cassie, the manager of one of ours was preparing herself for the onslaught of tat, the toiletry gift sets were already coming in thick and fast!
That book sounds fantastic, I shall add that to my wishlist. I think you need to treat yourself after your declutter. Femina is mind-blowing, so many powerful women written out of history to suit the Victorian/Edwardian patriarchal narrative!
      Look after yourself, love! xxx

I'm glad you managed a post Xmas visit to your local NT place, I love just wandering around and admiring the opulence. I think we might visit another one tomorrow, I'm hoping it'll be quiet! xxx

Dr. Ramirez has a new book out 'Legenda' based on significant female leaders throughout history. She recently did a book tour and was in Edinburgh. The tickets were only 8 quid, compared to the 45 quid Bettany's tickets will cost next Autumn. I'm bingewatching Murder One on STV Player. I used to be an avid fan in the '90's when you had to hold out for a whole week in between episodes!

    1. Thanks, Annie! Yes, that's what the lady I bought the dress from told me. I actually found the pattern in one of my stash of Golden hands magazines, what a labour of love that must have been!
£8 for Dr Ramirez? What a bargain! I'd love to see David Olusoga when he's talking in Birmingham in May but I'm not sure if we'll be away so will have to leave it to the last minute. Femina is mind-blowing, so many powerful and influencial women written out of history to suit the 19th and early 20th century naratives of the day.
I don't know Murder One, I may have to investigate further. We're having a film binge at the moment, it was Nuremberg last night, if Russell Crowe doesn't get an Oscar it'd be a crime! xxx

I love your black velvet dress. That'd make a great concert dress! You didn't miss much on my blog post today. It was just my annual Christmas song but this year involved me asking all the parents to contribute their home language words for peace which I then used in my song. It's not particularly a Christmassy song but is more of a message of peace with Christmas being the occasion it would be sung.

  14. Your utility room makeover is a triumph. I'm glad I stopped by to read this post midway into my new ensuite bathroom design, as I had decided to paper at least two of the walls in something a bit dramatic, and you've reminded me that I have two little 'Singer' brackets that I can use for a shelf in there. Alan is going all modern and sleek in his ensuite, but I, as usual, am doing my own thing. Lovely to see William enjoying himself with catnip, sadly it has no effect on Ginger, but I had a cat called Archie who got 'high' regularly. ;-)

Our National Trust membership wasn't as well used as it normally was this year, what with the miserable weather during the Spring & Autumn and our increased swimming. We shall try and do better in 2026! xxx
PS the Trump comment made me laugh. There's no chance of going to the World Cup next year even if we could afford it, what with what we've written about the orange one over the last few years! xxx

  16. Beth here. Please, please tell us where one can obtain Trump catnip chew toys for liberal-left-leaning felines and their staff! I wonder if you will ever be able to finish that jigsaw puzzle :-)

The utility room looks so much better, it hasn't given me any more enthusiam for housework but its certainly a nicer view when I'm ironing.
I always think of you when I wear that skirt although working out what to wear with it was a bit of a challenge, my usual choice of a sequinned corset might have got me some funny looks at 7am on Monday at the swiming baths (or should I say, even funnier looks than normal!)
I've transferred the jigsaw to a piece of cardboard and lifted it out of harm's way, hopefully I'll have completed it by Twelth Night!
