Big Coat Weather!

Hello! After starting November with unseasonably warm temperatures, the UK has been plunged into full-on Winter mode & its barely risen above freezing for the last few days.

But, as the old saying goes, theres no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing and, with my collection of vintage Afghan coats, I can withstand the occasional Arctic blast with ease.

I'm often asked how I've managed to amass a collection of original Afghan coats without bankrupting myself and the answer is by buying out of season when nobody else is hunting for them. It also helps when you aren't interested in being on trend and you can buy months (and often, years) in advance without worrying if your clothes are still going to be in fashion when you get around to wearing them. Vintage never goes out of style!

I bought this 1970s embroidered velvet kaftan a couple of years ago, I love it but it does have a tendency to catch on my tights/leggings and twist itself around when I walk, which my friend Sheila calls Velvet Rage. The other day I found a 1980s BHS satin nightie in a charity shop, wore it underneath and the kaftan stayed put when I walked down to drop off my parcels... no velvet rage, no tantrums.....hallelujah!

Look at those silver roots! Anyone would think I was nearly 60....

Not only was it bitterly cold but it was also peeing it down when I got up yesterday morning. Remembering Friday's wet hem misery, I wore my suede mini dress to walk down to the swimming pool. The change in the weather led to a flurry of sales of wool jumpers, skirts and dresses and by the end of the day I'd clocked up five miles after walking between the various parcel drop off points!

I loved reading the comments on my last post from women sticking their fingers up at the fashion nazis and rocking minis after 50....from the messages I've received you'll be happy to know that you've inspired others to follow suit, unleash their legs and sod the naysayers.

You can't see them very well but I'm wearing some clompy black lace-up boots which one of my chazza shopping mates talked me into buying a month ago. Being a complete and utter snob when it comes to cheap labels, I'd never normally entertain wearing something from New Look - I only entered the Walsall branch once, the girl on the shopfloor told me I was too cool to be in there and asked if she could try my rings on! Anyway, they are dead comfy and with the arthritis in my toe joints being hellish recently, I can walk pretty well in them. Not bad for £3.

On Tuesday I wore my newly acquired £235 Seraphina, London prairie blouse - which you'll recall cost me £2.99. I love it! If there weren't so many buttons I'd wear it down to the pool tomorrow so I could show Cassie, the manager of the shop I bought it from...she'll have to make do with a photo instead.

Needless to say I wore a big coat over both Wednesday's suede mini and Tuesday's blouse and skirt when I left the house!

In other news my magnificent new with tags raincoat has arrived and I love it! Now it can piss down as much as it likes on swimming days, I'm ready for it. Rainkiss are based in Amsterdam and come highly recommended for both the quality & style of their products along with their ethics and sustainability. Mine was an amazing bargain...they ain't cheap! I've spent the last couple of days filling in my festival trading applications and I'm hoping that I won't be needing it next summer.

Have you been watching Malice? We're gripped.

Described as The Talented Mr Ripley meets The White Lotus, it's partially set on Poros (another Greek Island to add to my wish list) and stars Jack Whitehall as the psychopathic nanny (known as a manny if you're a posh Londoner). Plot aside, the gorgeous Carise Van Houten, who happens to be Guy Pearce's ex, has a wardrobe to die for!

Jon's doing a great job with the decorating, all being well I should be able to share the results next week. It's possibly the most glamorous utility room I've ever seen. Maybe it'll inspire me to become a domestic goddess (or maybe not!)

See you soon!

  2. Ah, you look a vision in your Afghans! I love them! Well done for combatting Velvet rage! You look much better at almost 60 than I do at almost 45!!!
The new Prairie blouse looks super! I love the cut outs. Ha, I laughed at the thought of you in New Look! I haven't been watching those programmes but I should be! I've been watching Star Trek New Beginnings and Victoria on ITVX as well as lots of tacky Christmas movies and the Box of Delights! I hope your brother does watch it!x

    1. Bless you! Standing in front of a sunny window to take photos make all the difference! You are so much prettier and more youthful than me!
The only trouble with that blouse is that can't wear a vest underneath it with that pretty cutwork! Not ideal in this week's temperatures!
My brother is very excited about The Box of Delights and passed on his thanks.
Jon is obsessed with all things Star Trek, I swear he' watched every episode at least three times! Malice is great, who thought smiley Jack Whitehall could play such a scary character? xxx

  4. we have had the longest winter in New Zealand. Cold, windy, heavy rain (think sideways rain!). But now, finally, we are getting some sun. I wouldn't have minded that awful weather if I had been able to sally forth in Vix=type gear

    1. Oh dear, that rain sounds absolutely hideous. I can cope with cold but rain is just so midserable especially over such a prolonged length of time. Let's hope NZ gets an amazing Summer to make up for a horrid Winter! xxx

  8. Hi Vix, the velvet kaftan with humongous pendant looks fab. Yes it has turned suddenly very cold this week. The cold snap has allowed me to bring out a recently purchased ' new' red coat from Précis with a vintage brooch all charity shopped of course. Well done on the mini dress too. I am just slightly older than you but am happy to wear minis too. As a young girl/ woman i received quite a few nasty comments about my legs and always covered them in long skirts. Now my legs are not so thin and I enjoy wearing short skirts and getting my own back on the people who commented adversely on them in my youth. For the same reasons I wear bikinis to my local pool- not many women of my age doing that either here. How shocking!!!

    1. Thanks, Alysia! Like you, I used to get teased about having skinny legs. It didn't put me off wearing mini skirts but I used to wear two or three pairs of tights with them to try and make my legs look bigger - eventually the penny dropped and I realised the commeters had a problem with their own body image and I was just fine.
I don't believe that women become invisible when they get older, they just choose to stop making an effort - keep rocking that bikini, better to stand out than to disappear into the woodwork!
Your red coat sounds fab, Précis clothes are such fabulous quality! xxx

    2. Many thanks, Vix. I wish I'd known your trick of wearing multiple pairs of tights! I used to wear white or cream ones to make mine look bigger. I am totally with you, many women often want to blend in as they get older. I am definitely more ' daring' now than in my youth and people certainly comment on my clothes, hair etc in my small Scottish town. I also care less about what other people think dressed in their beige joggers.

  9. What an amazing collection of vintage Afghan coats you've got! I've still to find one myself, but I'm not giving up hope ...
That velvet kaftan is the stuff of dreams. I'm so glad that satin nightie kept the dreaded Velvet Rage at bay. I recently found a velvet top, which I've put off wearing because of it. Need to get my thinking cap on!
The Seraphina blouse looks even more gorgeous on you. That outfit is just perfect! xxx

  10. Hi Vix, you certainly do have some fabulous Afghan coats there! Silver roots I wouldn't care, you could grow them in and have an ombre effect in time - I have greyed somewhat and now have these unexpected silver streaks and am just embracing them, I will be 67 soon and am gradually adjusting to the new me, but I like her :) Can't wait to see Jon's decorating. Im feeliing very in the mood to do some decorating myself and have a 'thing' for green at the mo! Betty x

  11. Hooray for miniskirts for all, regardless of age! I agree with your "vintage is never out of style" advice - I also buy off-season and whenever I see something amazing! People ask my where I get all of my coats, and I remind them I've been collecting for 15-20 years!
Would you consider going full silver? Just curious! I can see you rocking the Emmylou Harris look!
Thank you for the shout-out (*shakes fist at Velvet Rage*), and good work on ameliorating it with a good slip. I ADORE your new blouse on you, and of course, I'm swooning over that belt buckle (drooling...seriously, it's gorgeous, I know I say this every time you wear it!).
Wishing you and Jon and your kitties much love! Stay warm!
