It seems like ages since I posted an outfit photo!
It's officially Autumn. Although it's depressingly damp and I'm getting up in the dark, it's mercifully mild and even at 7am, when we walk into town for our thrice weekly swim, I don't need a coat. When I found this 1990s NEXT maxi dress in the "£2.99 or less" charity shop last month my heart skipped a beat, I just love those rich earthy tones and these bias cut slinky dresses lend themselves beautifully to layering up with waistcoats, cowboy boots and wrap tops. The fringed chiffon scarf was a charity shop buy last year and I found my wool fedora with the orange leather hatband in the Decathlon clearance corner of all places (I'd only popped in to buy a pair of googles!) I bought my marmalade velvet wrap top from All About Audrey last year and have since found the olive green version on Vinted.
Here's my outfit in action earlier....
@vixbrearley Three mornings a week I walk down to our town centre pool at 7am and swim for a mile...do I dress down? Do I hell! #vintagestyle #1970saesthetic #over50women #swimmer ♬ Save Tonight - Eagle-Eye Cherry
The decline of the British high street continues with Claire's Accessories and my go-to discount toiletries shop, Bodycare, both going into administration. I've started shopping at Savers and am really impressed, not only are the prices of my regular toiletries (Nivea eye makeup remover, Wisdom interdental brushes and Oral B toothpaste) way cheaper but there's lots of interesting things I never knew I wanted. Along with some organic cat treats I also came back with these goodies. I normally use Tropic eyeliner but these Maybelline Tattoo Liners are a good back up and are reduced by a third, I wasn't sure if it was the colours of this cruelty free/ vegan eyeshadow palette or the Wild West graphics that drew me in but a girl can never have too many brown, bronze and orange eyeshadows!
I've had a hankering for some face framing layers cut into my hair for a while. Although Jon trims the ends when I ask him, for something a bit more radical, I thought I'd better see a professional and, a fortnight ago, booked an appointment with the training academy in Walsall town centre, where I'd been for my last trim four and a half years ago. I was a bit nervous but the tutor and the young apprentices were amazing and I'm absolutely thrilled with the result. My shampoo, cut and blow-dry cost me just £10!!

I've always thought of my hair as being straight but the longer it gets the more kinks appear and as the tutor had explained to the students that my hair was wavy I was intrigued by the Inecto Curl Defining Cream I'd spotted in Saver's and at £2.99 thought it as worth a try. Inecto is one of those old-fashioned brands from my childhood, remember the Linco Beer shampoo that came in little plastic barrels?

This is what my hair looked like before I tried the curl cream, I washed it on Saturday night (two days ago), I'd walked into town in the rain and it had been stuffed into a swimming cap for 45 minutes.
I dampened my hair with a plant mister...
Worked a couple of 2p sized dollops of product through my hair before blasting it though with the hairdryer on a coolish setting.
I'm so impressed with my carefree, nonchalant waves and the rose scent is lovely - not cloyingly sweet and evil like that terrible washing powder/ fabric conditioner that so many charity shop clothes reek of.
In other news, Liz and I went to a school reunion last weekend. It had been 40 years since we'd sat our A Levels and we'd not seen some of our classmates in all that time but, despite a few nerves, as soon as we laid eyes on each other the years just fell away and we carried on where we'd left off.
You might remember me mentioning that our school, Queen Mary's High School, was an all-girls' school and there's a bloke (Ian!) with us.
That's because Queen Mary's Grammar School, the boys' school, also had a reunion on the same night. The lads were in the year above us, we used to hang out with them both during our school years and for several years afterwards in pubs and at gigs.
We all had such a laugh that we've promised to meet up again next year when (hopefully) there might be even more of us.
QMHS 1985. Can you spot any of us?
There's so much more to write about including Jon & I's day trip to a nearby city, a fantastic film we've been to see, some superb TV shows we've binge-watched, what I've been reading and some incredible vintage finds all of which I'll try and squeeze in before the end of the week.
(Don't forget I'm on TikTok if you're here for the clothes - link in my sidebar).
Hi Vix,
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed your holiday posts. The sea looked gorgeous, the colours were stunning, made me want to paint my nails Ionian blue.
I think you are second down from the top, far left of the photo, is Liz next to you?
We have a Savers in town and it is brilliant, ours is always busy and because it is so small has an unofficial one way system! Be interesting to see how you get on with the eyeshadow. I use the Maybelline eyeliners, a fellow commuter recommended them, I have very sensitive eyes and found these one of the few that doesn’t irritate or budge, unless I want it to.

Hello MrsCatz! Yes, that's me and Liz.Well spotted!
DeleteI adore that Ionian blue, I'm not sure why I didn't choose that for my nails for my holidays this time.
Savers is ace, isn't it? the staff are really helpful and smiley in ours and I love that it sells booze alongside cleaning products and cat treats. You're right, I can swim in that Maybelline eyeliner but it comes off with Nivea eyemake remover really well. I wonder if they're discontinuing it? I'll give that eyeshadow a try tomorrow, these dreary damp days call for a bit of added sparkle! xxx
Hello Vix,
ReplyDeleteWell, we can hardly believe that the dress was £2.99. It is so pretty. The material looks wonderful and the cut is beautiful. Accessorised as you have done and hey presto you are definitely an autumn belle.
The demise of the high street is a concern all over the country it would seem and does nothing to encourage people back. Coffee shops are all very well but there really can be too many when there are no useful shops to be found. What has happened to good old-fashioned greengrocers, shoe repairers and family bakeries? So sad.
Hello, Jane and Lance! Thank you very much. Next made some lovely clothes back in the day, the arrival of the Next Directory was met with much excitement when I still lived at home.
DeleteLuckily we've still got an independent cobbler in our town centre - but little else. xxx
10 pounds what a deal.. that's just how much I tip. Your hair looks incredible.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I was amazed by the price! x
DeleteHow cool that you’ve suddenly discovered waves. I wish I could discover some, mine has always been pin straight too. I’m glad your reunion was good, you never can tell how these things will turn out. When you’re walking out to your swimming I’m trying to peel myself out of bed to start my day! I’m not very good at getting off to bed early enough at night though. Xx
ReplyDeleteMy hair used to drive my poor mum daft, it never held a curl despite her painstakedly rag rolling it or using curling tongs on it when I went to parties I'm really excited that it's developed waves in my old age!
DeleteIts still a struggle to get Jon out of bed so early in the morning but treatening him that I'm going without him soon gets him moving! xxx
Your haircut looks marvelous, and look at you, all wavy, Vix! My hair is also wavy and does nice bumps when I put the time in to scrunch it with curl creme when it's air-drying.
ReplyDeleteLove the new dress and that velvet wrap is just sumptuous!
Your reunion looks like a blast! I haven't been to any since our 10 year high school grad in 1996!
Thanks, Sheila! Your hair always looks lovely when you wave it. I;ve got so little patience when it comes to hair styling so I'm really pleased with how easy that curl cream is to use.
DeleteWe loved the reunion, we've decided to use it as a practice run and do ut agian next year! xxx
Fabulous autumn styling.
ReplyDeleteYour hair looks lovely too.
Nice waves.
Mine is definitely straight, no cream could curl it.
The reunion must have been fun.
There is no such thing as all boys or all girls schools here, I always wonder what that is like.
Your hair is perfect as it is, Ivana, I love how glossy and healthy it always looks.
DeleteSingle sex schools seem very outmoded these days - Liz and I had brothers so we were used to male company but the girls who didn't tended to get very giddy when a boy would talk to them! xxx
I’ve been meaning to visit your blog, but the past few days have been really hectic for me. I’m sorry for the delay! I’ll make sure to come by soon and read your newest posts I always enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Indonesia
Hello, Asep! Its lovely to hear from you. Hope you're well! x
DeleteThird row up from the bottom, on the lefthand side at very end, shy looking blond in the school pic? is that you? Your hair looks very pretty with a wave and the layering gives lovely volume and will let those waves spring up... Im growing my layers out - my hairdresser told me this project has taken us 6 years so far! I love your marmalade Audrey wrap and am thinking of getting a brown one. Im finding it hard to get myself naked at the swimming pool now the weather's changed but as long as you keep it up you will be my motivation to keep going!! How lovely to do a school reunion, ours did one about 20 years ago but I didn't go, thought it would be too emotional - but yours didn't look tearful, quite the opposite, lots of laughter and fun. I watch your tiktok posts now, so nice seeing your outfits in motion :) Betty x
ReplyDeleteThat's me, Betty! I hated haing my photo taken and it felt so unnatural looking at the camera back then.
DeleteI was adamant that I only wanted a single layer cut into my hair, I remember a hairdresser doing a "Rachel from Friends" cut back in the 1990s. it probably looked okay but it felt like someone had taken my personality away and the person in the mirror wasn't me.
Those Audrey tops are brilliant, worth every penny. My orange one was full price and I wsa lucky enough to find a olive green one on Vinted a month or so later. They're just right for now when it's not quite cool enough for a coat. xxx
You are spooky (in the best way!) A few years ago I found that my dead straight hair was not at all straight and now has waves similar to yours - happy days š¤
ReplyDeleteBlog title - oh. my. heart. One of my favourite songs of that time. Recently, YouTube served me up a 2002 version with just Marc and Jools Holland. Pure magic, haven't been able to get rid of the ear worm since š

Jon & I love Marc Almond, he was phenomenal when we last saw him (Lakefest, 2019) and thank you so much for that link, we loved it! xxx
DeleteHello Vicky, I'm stuck with a miserable cold at the moment, so having a quiet sit and catching up with your Greece blogs. What an amazing trip!
ReplyDeleteI love your new hair style. I've recently had a couple of inches taken off mine, and although it's not too dramatic, it's made such a difference to how I feel. I remember Inecto, I'll have a look for that cream, it's really worked a treat for you. Xx
Get well soon, Annie! Liz and I think we caught that csame cold at the school reunion, I only felt rough for a day but a wek later and my head still feels like its full of cotton wool - feel better soon!
DeleteI get so nervous about hair cuts but I'm really pleased now I've had it done. I know exactly what you mean about it making you feel so much better about yourself, I swear that all my clothes hang better now I've had my ends snipped off! xxx
Oh gosh, I remember buying those little barrels of shampoo, I felt so grown up suddenly having my own and not having to share the family bottle of Vosene any more. Your hair looks lovely all wavy, having a natural curl explains why it holds onto it's waves for so long when you have had it plaited for a while. You are just helping it to do it's own thing. :-)
ReplyDeleteHello, Sue! You could be on to something there, if my hai was straight it wouldn't hold those waves for days, would it?
DeleteI loved it when Mum bought that Linco Beer shampoo, my brother and I were always daring each other to drink it. I wonder how mnay kids did and wether that's why they stopped making it! xxx
ReplyDeleteThe eyeshadow palette is great, the colors are pretty. It's lucky that your hair has such beautiful waves; I'd love to have them too. I really like your hairstyle.
Thnaks so mych, Andrea! I thought of you when I picked up that eyeshadow palette, you being the queen of makeup! xxx
DeleteBoth your outfit and hair are fabulous, Vicky! £ 10 is definitely a steal. I'm paying over € 80 for my usual colour and cut, and Michel isn't even all that expensive!
ReplyDeleteI spotted you and Liz right away! We had a school reunion back in 2010, but sadly hardly anyone from our class turned up ...
The decline of the high street is a sad affair. We do have a Claire's in Antwerp but hadn't noticed it was closed. xxx
Thanks, Ann! I was almost speechless when I paid for my hair! Yes, your € 80 is really good compared to the prices for a cut and colour with the salon director here and your hair always looks perfect!
DeleteThere weren't many of us at the reunion, but a lot more have been in touch and really want to come next time - I didn't like schol but I loved some of the girls I was there with! xxx
Your hair looks super!!! I'm glad you found something nice! Sorry to hear all your favourites have closed but glad Savers helped! I really love your Audrey wrap! How cool was your reunion!? I am going to a university event in November but I don't know if many of my year will go at all?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kezzie! Savers is great but it is like B&M in that its impossible to go in with a list and not get distracted.
DeleteKeep your eyes peeled for Audrey wrap tops on Vinted - I've got the maxi dress version, too - they're so cosy to wear.
I hope you go to your university reunion, I loved meeting up with some of the old girls and boys! xxx
Oh that curling cream looks good. I have what everyone one on TT is referring to as Irish curls ugh my drives me crazy, not straight, not curly, not even wavy. Just straightish, straight/frizzy on the top layer and zig zag curls underneath. And what is wild if I curl my hair with a curling iron it falls out within about 20 minutes. How can naturally curlishy hair not hold a curl???
ReplyDeleteLove your outfit and the throwback photo! You have to tell us which one is you, are you on the end? On left?
Allie of
www.allienyc.com
I know exactly what you mean by Irish curls, I've had a few friends with similar hair - I love it, it drives them mad!
DeleteYes, third row from the front, on the left and my friend Liz is next to me! xxx
Your hair looks gorgeous! I've started to wear mine natural (more curly than wavy) more often than not. It's down to my laziness really :)
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that these stores are closing down. If Home Bargains disappears, I'm not sure what I'll do. Xx
Thanks, Jules! I think that's why I wear my hair done, putting it up an dnot looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards requires too much effort although after using that curl cream in Monday I put my hair up in a bun to go swimming this morning and several people stopped me in the street to tell me how good it looked! I only discovered Home Bargains and B&M when Wilko closed, I'd be bereft if they vanished, too! xxx
DeleteOh, how delightful! Such good times. And you look amazing. Awesome curls! Thank you for reading and thank you for your comments. All the best to a wonderful fall and what it has in store for youššššš
ReplyDeleteThnaks so much, Ellie! xxx
