Scrap Happy

This Wild West inspired two-piece (below) sewn with Liz's assistance is probably my favourite me-made outfit to date. I still need to make the waistcoat but I'm holding out for the perfect vintage fabric!

Keen to wear the skirt but wanting a top more suited to the unseasonably warm weather that the UK is currently enjoying, I retrieved the fabric scraps left over from making the blouse, had a rummage through my stash and found this vintage 1970s Butterick pattern. I'd only got a bit of fabric and the tiny top was just the right size.
A couple of hours later and ta-da..! A block printed cotton halterneck crop-top adorned with peacocks!

I was going to take the lazy approach and use press studs as fasteners but I got my big girl pants on, cast my mind back to what Liz had taught me and made buttonholes instead. I can wear it for Glastonbury without worrying that it'll ping off!

Here's what I bought from Le Shop, the gorgeous Arts and Crafts emporium we discovered in Marmaris' Grand Bazaar, three Ottoman rings! My friend Betty was quite right, I did buy jewellery with blue stones, turquoise is my birthstone which is always a good excuse to buy it!

Friday was manicure day and I used my rings as inspiration, playing up the butter quartz stones with this eye-popping shade of egg yolk yellow gel. A radical change from my trademark blues and greens and I absolutely love it! The copal (made from tree resin) beads were a lucky 50p find in the clearance charity shop shortly soon after it reopened after lockdown, if you know your tribal jewellery you'll know that these beauties usually sell for £££s.

Thanks for reading, see you soon!

  7. My mum had a couple of ottoman rings. I hadn't realised that she got them when she was travelling on the cheap through the middle east, in the late 1970s

  8. A delightful choice, those rings are fabulous and I like your eggy beads too - nails look fab - having grown mine to perfection they have all broken and peeled :( I am tempted to go the gel nail route if things dont improve, your nails look very well manicured. You did well with the halter top and it looks great on you - Glastonbury here you come! Betty x

    1. Thanks, Betty! Its good to have a few new rings, most of my silver ones are so old that they've gone weird shapes and it takes me ages to get them on and off.
What a shame about your nails. Have you tried a nail & cuticle oil? Barry M do one and it really does help with the condition. I'm so happy with my regular manicures, I should get my nail technician, Charlotte, to take a photo of my nails in their unpainted state between manis to show how good they look!
It's Glasto prep time, the tent's going up in the garden very soon! xxx

  9. Hi Vix, thanks for showing us your lovely new rings. Glad you were able to find some treasures on your trip. I have bought a few pieces of jewellery on holiday over the years. I regret not buying a beautuful ring in the shape of a butterfly many years ago in Kos. I have never seen one since that I liked as much. It was rather expensive though!

    1. Hello Alysia! Oh dear, the ring that got away! I wonder if you saw that butterfly ring in that incredible arts and crafts shop in Kos Town, run by an incredibly stylish older lady? She has so many beautiful (and rather pricey) things in there! xxx

  10. Wow, I'm swooning over those rings (also over the massive beads, always a favourite!). I have a weakness for turquoise even if not my birthstone, so love them, and love your bracelet too.
I've been tempted by some ethnic pieces at Vinted, considering my jewellery collection needs an improvement!
And well done creating a cute top from a small piece of fabric, so skilled!. You look gorgeously summery in it!

I love how you used your rings as an inspiration for your manicure. This is adorable. I love how you layer your rings and accessories.

  12. You did well with that little top, and those yellow nails really pop don't they. My initial reaction was 'no', but that very quickly changed to 'wow'. Fantastic. Hopefully, you'll find the perfect waistcoat fabric, or something that can be cut up to provide enough fabric, by the time the weather turns cooler.

  14. Your photos remind me of some of the recently viewer pictures we've gone through for my brother...my sister's, cousins, their friends in their early 70's halters and long hair! I see a new product line for the Kinky Shed.

I absolutely love the sun top you made! I am watching raindrops fall which thrills me as I had the lawn aerated and reseeded so it saves me some hand watering! JanF

  19. Hi from Miami, Vix! Great halter! Another option is to put a zipper in the center back or under an arm, which I am pretty sure you can do, if I remember stories of your alterations correctly! So glad you are enjoying the lovely weather. :)

    1. Hello, sweetheart! It's lovely to hear from you. I hope all's good in Miami! Do you know, I'd not thought about a zip! That's a great idea, I've got a couple of those classic 1970s ones with the big ring pull which would be perfect! xx

    2. Helloooo! All is good! Very hot here :) Yes, a separating zipper would be a secure and pretty way to finish it, and it doesn't take much time at all. I want to buy the pattern you have, the cowboy/girl western one! I think I will!
