Hello! I'm bringing you this blog via our newly installed full fibre broadband. Yes, we've finally caught up with the 21st Century!
I love algorithms! I rarely search for anything on Vinted, their Recommended For You page knows my taste so well it's bordering on scary. Last week this 1960s raw silk, screen printed dress popped up and, at £9, it was a no-brainer. It had been listed for over six months, why on earth had nobody already snapped it up?
It got its debut yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday).
Whilst I was photographing some of my jewellery for my last blog post, I came across a bag of discarded bits & pieces I'd forgotten about so Jon and I spent our rainy Saturday afternoon making some new necklaces.
This Kuchi pendant looked a bit lost on a silver chain but threaded on a cord with these obsolete Indian coins and some oxidised metal tubular beads it has loads more impact. As I've said before, I don't do discrete or dainty, I like my jewellery visible!
The tie back construction reminds me of those Walk-Away dresses that were popular in the 1950s.
We've been watching Yellowstone on Netflix and noticed how the cowboys wear a lot of Wrangler. Until Nick Kamen and that iconic Levi advert in 1985, it was the denim of choice for our generation. A few years ago a girl was trying on a vintage jacket at a fair we were trading at and asked what Wrangler was as she'd never heard of it (we told her to ask her Dad).
Walking back from the swimming pool on Friday morning the second hand stall on the market had a £4 rail and I soon snaffled this marvellously-aged 1980s Wrangler jacket. It was intended for the Kinky Shed until Jon tried it on. I have suggested he practices his lasso technique on William when he's running up and down the lawn like a thing possessed after a few Dreamies.
We spent yesterday in the pub and met Tony for pizza in Spoons at midday. Mine was topped with roasted vegetables and the boys' spicy pepperoni. They also shared cheesy chips with bacon. I don't really do chips (I know, I'm a disgrace to my nation!)
After eating we headed up the road to the Black Country Arms to meet up with my brother, Marcus, and to watch Walsall who were playing Wimbledon at Wembley in the Division 1 play-offs.
Sadly we were beaten 1- 0.
We drowned our sorrows with some delicious Salopian IPA.
Amazingly, despite spending eight and a half hours in the pub Jon & I were up bright eyed & clear headed and in the pool for 7.30am this morning.

Taken on the way to catch our flight to Rhodes, September 2022 |
With the weather being a bit iffy this weekend, I've been doing a bit more refashioning. I absolutely love this Dilli Grey dress which I bought new in 2022 but the tie straps really annoy me, the bows get tangled up in my hair and I can't be doing the trailing ends so I removed the straps at the back, flipped the front straps over my shoulder and sewed their ends to the back of the dress, chopping off the excess fabric.
Waste not, want not! I used the unwanted straps to make scrunchies, every long-haired girl's best friend!
And now I've got rid of those faffy straps I can play around with layers and make it a year-round dress rather than something exclusively for the summer. I can't be bothered with those seasonal wardrobe swap-overs, I love my clothes and want to wear them all year round!
I love it with this marmalade velvet wrap top (another All About Audrey purchase).
Here's today's outfit, another Vinted find. A vintage Afghan dress for £10! Excuse the wet patch on the dress and my dishevelled swimming cap hair, I had to dash outside to pose for a photo when there was a break in the rain. It's the black version of this blue one I bought back in 2019!
More of my cuff collection - both of these were charity shop finds.
Ditto the glass earrings and enamelled Kuchi pendant.
I don't wear jewellery to walk down to the swimming pool but have to put it on after my swim, I'd hate to disappoint the regulars in Spoons who always tell me that I'm cool!
Thanks for visiting, see you soon!
This post is a delightful celebration of vintage fashion, creativity, and everyday joys! I loved how you effortlessly blend personal stories with style tips, from the charming £9 dress to DIY jewellery that truly makes a statement.
ReplyDeleteYour eye for unique finds, like that Wrangler jacket and Afghan dress, is inspiring. The balance of sustainability, nostalgia, and individuality shines through every detail. And your morning swims after a full pub day? Impressive! You’ve captured the heart of 21st-century vintage living with warmth, humor, and flair. Looking forward to the next post!
Thanks so much, Asep! x
DeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely post of eccentric and vintage looks! The Afghan dress won the competition! And your jewellery deserves a place in a museum!
Those pizzas must be delicious!
I had some Wrangler jeans, I remembered when you mentioned the name!
What a shame your club lost! They'll win next time!
I wish you a wonderful vintage week!
Thank you, Marisa! Afghan dresses are the best, they're so easy and comfortable to wear and with no fastenings easy to take on and off after swimming!
DeleteWrangler denim is great quality and ages really well.
Have a fantastic rest of the week! xxx
Just passing by to wish you a wonderful weekend Vix!
DeleteWow, those Afghan dresses are sublime.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting 21st century fibre. It has been installed in some parts of our village and has proved unreliable and (apparently) unfixable for many. So for now we will stick with our only-marginally-faster-than-dial-up connection.
Only recently I was fondly remembering now defunct 'proper' jeans shops where everything was made from decent thick denim, not skanky blue cotton that calls itself denim. 😠
I think we're the last in the avenue to get full fibre, apparently our address didn't exist on the BT Openreach records so we weren't contacted when it became available. Lets hope it behaves itself, our dial-up was so frustratingly slow it was slowly sending us mad!
DeleteWe get so excited when we find proper denim second hand, you're right, most if the time it's skanky blue cotton or full of that horrible elastane/lycra! xxx
Catching up again!
ReplyDeleteI love the Indian coin necklace you gave me, but the pendant does look a fabulous addition.
I can't stand tie straps either, a complete nuisance. I know it sounds a bit lame, but do you have any instructions for making the scrunchies?
Festival season is nearly here! Where is the time going 🙂 xx
Hello, Annie! Great to hear from you. Hopefully you've got that link for Scrunchies I've just put on Facebook but for anyone else interested in making there it's here: https://mellysews.com/how-to-make-scrunchies/ xxx
DeleteHi Vix, I do enjoy your clothes and jewellery posts! Love those cuffs and the remade jewellery with kuchi pendant - fabulous! I am changing my taste in both clothes and jewellery as I get older and developed a liking for bangles big enough to see and pendants that have some weight! Good idea with the Dilly Grey dress, those bow ties are too girly and the re--sewn straps now enable jackets it looks really good with the marmalade AAA wrap top. I will look at the scrunchies linky above too as I buy mine from Oxfam (silk £3.99) but would rather make them for less! Limbering up for Thailand I am currently lost in my suitcase deciding what to take! Betty x
ReplyDeleteThanks, Betty! The bigger, the better when it comes to jewellery!
DeleteI think with us choosing to travel light it makes a lot more sense to pack a few statement pieces of jewellery to change the look of our capsule wardrobe than load ourselves down with extra dresses. Since I've been sharing my jewellery on my blog I keep being inundated with recommendations on Vinted, I'm trying my best to resist!
Those straps on my Dilli Grey dress were really starting to annoy me, I'm not sure why it took me so long to alter them!
I bet those Oxfam scrunches are lovely - that tutorial is really straightforward and a great way of repurposing those vintage Indian silk scarves we're so fond of when they start to fray. xxx
DeleteWrangler brought back memories, they were actually made in the city I now live in. Growing up as a teenager in British Columbia in the mid 70s, Wrangler's weren't cool. It was Seafarer jeans (supposed to be US Navy surplus) or Lee brand with the leather patch.
ReplyDeleteLooking back I was so skinny, the 28 inch waist was my size for my hips and I felt fat because the rest of my group wore 26 inch.
It's hot here, just waiting for the storm to lower the temperatures. It was so dark yesterday before the rain we had to put the lights on.
Hello! Fancy Wrangler being made in the city where you now live!
DeleteI've not heard of Seafarer jeans (guess what I'll be Goggling when I've caught up with my comments?) Lee were popular because of the James Dean connection but rarely turned up at jumble sales when we were teenagers.
There used to be a warehouse that imported vintage Levi's from the USA back in my student days. Back then I was all about the oversized look and I'd buy 38" and belt them!
I find those dark, storm days quite exciting but I'd rather have heat and sunshine! xxx
I've got that same Dilli Grey dress and I've done exactly the same thing with the annoying bows..... stitched them down and cut off the excess! 🤣
ReplyDeleteGreat minds thank alike! xxx
DeleteThat £9 dress is fab, I love the colours. I think I’m too changeable for Vinted to predict what I might want on any given day, but I do like to check out their finds for me. I remember Mum buying me some wrangler jeans when I was in high school and I thought I was the bees knees. Your jewellery collection is all very unique and eye catching. Xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Louise! I'm thrilled with it, I bet it cost a bomb back in the day.
DeleteAfter me praising Vinted yesterday today I've had books on breast-feeding and a high chair pop up in my feed! Madness! xxx
Oh my gosh, that red/pink dress is amazing! I bet it didn't sell because it's a very small size, but all the better for you, Vix! Love that you upcycled some of your broken jewelry into bigass statement pieces! I definitely remember Wrangler being the denim of choice until about 1984, when it became all about Levi's. Oh, and there were brands like Jordache, of course.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sheila! he construction of that dress and the amazing fabric are fantastic. Being the size of a child has its advantages when it comes to finding bargains online!
DeleteI come up with the ideas for re[pairing my jewellery and Jon has the skills and patience to turn them into reality, we make a good team.
I don't think I know Jordache, Pepe was a cool British brand which set out to rival Levi's - they used The Smiths' How Soon is Now on their cinema advert but the quality wasn't great! xxx
I had a few pairs of Pepe Betty jeans on the late 80's/early 90s,, they had the beautiful 1950s fit. Wrangler had a factory in Livingston in Scotland until about the mid 90s, so your jacket could have been made there.
DeleteHello Jan! I don't think I remember Pepe's Betty jeans, I always went for hugely oversized men's styles which probably weren't particularly flattering, thank goodness we didn't take lots of photos of ourselves back then! I had no idea Wrangler manufactured in Scotland, the jacket doesn't have a country if manufacture on the label so maybe it did hail from there! X
DeleteThat 1960's Raw Silk screen printed Dress and Accessories is Sublime. And the Food Porn is tasty looking too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dawn! xxx
DeleteOh wow this dress is SO cool. Love the cut and the pattern. And the flowy dresses are super fun too, love the colors! You always find the best pieces.
ReplyDeleteAllie of
www.allienyc.com
Thank you, Allie! xxx
DeleteLove all your jewellery, and I especially love your rings, your turquoise one I drool over. You guys must be getting ready for festival season, how is it going?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Diane! We were planning on erecting the trade tent in the garden this week but have been hindered by strong winds and torrential rain. I'm hoping it'll go up in the next couple of days. The Kinky Shed is bursting with exciting new stock! xxx
DeleteIMO, real men wear Wrangler! That's Tommy's go-to brand too.
ReplyDeleteIt is really nice that someone is getting swim time in, as I've had no luck! I am impressed with how well your manicure holds up with all that water time. I always loved your blue nails, but with all your jewelry and recent wardrobe additions, the yellow nails hit the spot.
I'm always amazed with how adaptable your jewelry collection is. You do a great job re-imagining what you've got. Your collection is gorgeous!
If it's good enough for your Tommy and the cowboys on the Yellowstone ranch then Jon definitely needs to keep that jacket!
DeleteWhat a pain about your swimming and the lanes always being full. The early morning sessions at our pool are always really quiet which probably isn't a good thing as our council are always looking for ways to save money - if they threaten to close our pool I'll be chaining myself to the railings in a swimsuit! xxx
Your new silk dress is absolutely gorgeous, and it looks amazing on you. A great find. Vinted algorithms usually get it right, but occasionally, I can be confused by their suggestions :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I love how a simple change has made your Dilli Grey dress more wearable. Xx
Thanks, Jules! Jon and I were laughing this morning, my Vinted recommendations were for a high chair and a book on breast feeding - I run a mile when I see a baby! xxx
DeleteOh my I have serious jewellery envy. Your posts bring so much joy and colour. The straps on your Dilli Grey dress work fabulously things like that can be so annoying now you have a solved the situation with some sewing plus scrunchies. Genius! Hope you enjoy your day. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Sue! What a kind comment! I get lazy with my jewellery over the winter with everything hidden underneath a coat, it's really exciting to be able to unleash it all now its a bit warmer!
DeleteThe straps on that Dilli Grey dress were such an easy fix, I'm not sure why it took me so long to get around to doing it! xxx
So awesome to find that jacket. What a fun story too! Oh, and the dresses you have. All ready for a great adventures..or 8 hours at the pub! Lovely moments indeed along with the wonderful jewelry! 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸Thanks for your visit and your comments. Wishing you a fantastic new month and beyond. All the best to your new wifi and much much more 🌸💗🍒💗🌸 Thanks for being here!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ellie! This new internet connection is amazing, I can't believe how quick it is! xxx
DeleteHey Vix - always reading but on a limited online diet (for the sake of my mental health) lol. Loving all your travel posts but you can't beat an outfit-fest! Looking fabulous as always - I always love what you wear and wish I could wear them as well as you. Whilst you are slender and have a frame just made for petite Indian/Afghan/vintage clothing - I have absolutely the wrong shape for it LMAO. I cannot complain - I have pretty much acquired my dream wardrobe over the years - but fantasy wafty waif-self is never far away - oh dear!
ReplyDeleteWhat news on Gordon - or has he gone travelling?
Much love Elaine xx
Elaine!! It's so lovely to hear from you, you're often in my thoughts! I know what you mean about the online diet, I think that's why I go away so much, to get away from the madness!
DeleteI know you've got some incredible pieces in your wardrobe. I'm all about the waftiness, rarely practical but always good for the soul! xxx
Ah - wafty/hi-low/duster tops and puddle hems are all off limits to me at the mo (as are shoes and socks) as I've had a horrid fall. Fortunately I'm pinned and plated and load-bearing, but it's all going to take some time to mend - drat - luckily my lovely man is being chief cook, bottle washer and carer! And I can recline on the chaise longue lol
DeleteOh no! I'm so sorry about your fall, Elaine. what a dent to your confidence that must be, Fingers crossed it heals soon and you can get back to footwear and maxi length dresses. Three cheers for a bloke how can cook, clean and make himself useful. Get him to find Wet Leg's Chaise Longue on YouTube and blast it out. xxx
DeleteMy gosh could I bring you Wrangler items! My dad swore by them. My husband was a Levi's guy. Your dresses just seem to work year round don't they.
ReplyDeleteIf only you could, Sam! I want to introduce Gen X to Wrangler! Levi's are very cool though, I've got a tatty old pair I love. xxx
Delete
ReplyDeleteThe dress is sensational. I love the slim fit and the colors. It's made for you. The food looks incredibly good <3 ... it shouldn't be allowed to whet readers' appetites with pictures. :D
xoxox
Thanks, Andrea! It's a beautiful dress to wear, I love silk!
DeleteI enjoyed that pizza so much I had it again today! xxx
Congratulations on catching up with the 21st Century! We haven't jumped on the fibre bandwagon yet, but I'm sure it won't be long.
ReplyDeleteBoth your new Vinted finds are fabulous, I can't believe that first dressed hadn't been snapped up yet!
Well done on refashioning that Dilli Grey dress. Even if they're not interfering with my hair, those faffy tie straps tend to drive me mad. I've been known to do the same with one or two of my dresses over the years.
The marmelade velvet All About Audrey top is just stunning with that dress! xxx
It's made such a difference, Ann! I like the 21st Century after all!
DeleteThose tie straps are an absolute mare, aren't they? Even if I didn't have my hair to contend with I hate how you can never get the straps the right length or get the bows to look the same on each side. xxx
I'm sorry... doesn't know the name Wrangler?? What's happening to this world?? Snowflakes? Is that the word??!! Loving your jewellery very much! I think we need photos of Jon lassoing William! 🤣🤣 Your wardrobe tweaks have got me inspired. Just Summer clothing is such a waste of favourite clothes .. yes? I did actually blow the dust (a lot), off Beulah the Bernina and shortened 2 pairs of trousers for me. Makes a change, it's usually Arthur who needs that doing for him! Zxx ❤️❤️
ReplyDeleteHello, birthday girl! You do make me laugh. Jon and I couldn't believe it when that girl asked "What's Wrangler?" , she must come from a generation of Primarni shoppers or something!
DeleteWell done on cranking up the sewing machine and getting some alterations done. It's mad how quick and easy it is to do stuff like that! xxx
Your jewelry is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteIt would be great for the planet to make other things out of clothes.
I think that now with Fast Fashion, most of the fabrics are nylon (and unhealthy) and to get something good you have to pay a lot of money.
The silk dress is fantastic.
Your taste in this style is unsurpassed.
I hope you continue to come through beautiful with your loved ones!
Thanks Katerina! I agree, we need to repurpose and make do with what already exists and stop this frivolous quest for new things. I hate how Polyester is in everything, it leeches into our water table every time we wash it which is terrible for the planet. xx
DeleteHi Vix, thank you for lots more loveliness in the form of two stunning Afghan dresses. Those really are quite special and perfectly accessorised by your unique jewellery. Like you I think beautiful dresses are everyday wear and not just for ‘ special’ occasions. I went to a smallish vintage fair at the weekend and got a few albums, a brooch and some faceted glass beads. Good fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alysia! I do love those Afghan dresses, they're so easy to throw on and so comfy to wear. I was so excited to spot that black one!
DeleteI love that you wear your special dresses all the time, I don't do "It'll do for messing around in the house/doing the garden". I want to feel special al the time!
It sounds like you did really well at the vintage fair. I'm obsessed with beaded necklaces at the moment! xx
When I met my first husband in a bar in Old Trafford, Manchester he was wearing double denim, double Wrangler in fact ... and all brand new. I don't know what I saw in him really he was like a cowboy from Salford, but somehow our marriage lasted 26 years. That dress looks so much neater with the fixed instead of tie straps, and making hair scrunchies out of the leftover straps is a brilliant idea. That silk dress was just waiting for you, it looks perfect.
ReplyDeleteThe Salford Cowboy! I bet you couldn't miss him in that ensemble! 26 years is good doing, did his style change over the years or did he stick to double denim?! xxx
DeleteThose Afghan dresses are so lovely-I'm always partial to black, but the black and the blue are both fantastic on you🖤🩵
ReplyDeleteand of course I want some vintage Wrangler denim now ;)
happy Thursday! ✨
Stephanie
Thanks, Stephanie! Afghan dresses are so easy to wear, I love that they don't have fastening's and that you can wear them backwards! Good luck with your quest for some vintage Wrangler! xxx
DeleteGlad you made the most of Vinted's reccommendations! Such a lucky find was that dress, its print is particularly Fabulous.
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with those refashioned pendants! Great idea!
And a great job on those straps, a simple change which transforms a summerdress into a versatile piece!
So lovely that you found that black version of your beautiful afghan dress!!
Besos
Thanks, Monica! Since I mentioned about how accurate Vinted's recommended pages are it's been showing me some very weird things including power tools and baby stuff! xxx
DeleteI love how you bring your jewellery to wear after swimming to go to Spoons (to not disappoint your admirers!) That is so funny! X
ReplyDelete
