Nailed It!

We've been enjoying some glorious Spring weather with dazzlingly bright sunshine and cloudless, almost Mediterranean blue skies, although the temperatures are hardly tropical (it was 2°C when we walked down to the baths this morning). By way of a celebration my nails are painted Captain Blue, a colour that just shouts Summer!

In recent years I have become what some folk disdainfully call "the kind of woman who gets their nails done" - in other words a spendthrift trollop. Guilty as charged! I absolutely love my regular gel manicures. Not only do my super-strong & healthy, chip-free nails do my fabulous jewellery justice but, more importantly, I'm helping to support True Beauty, a locally-owned independent salon and the professionally qualified female technicians who work there. We're all quick to moan about our ailing high streets but the only way we can save them isn't by whingeing, its by spending our money with businesses that aren't fast food or fast fashion chains.

This was what I wore on Saturday to walk into town to drop off my Vinted sales parcels and to do some tidying of our hideously neglected garden. You may remember my dress, a vintage Indian block printed midi by Amber of Jaipur, which I bought at the Puerto de la Cruz Flea Market when we visited Tenerife in December. I didn't even bother to haggle over the €4 asking price. The 1970s Anokhi waistcoat was a Vinted find and I bought the pendant in Gujarat back in 2017.

On Sunday, for another walk down to the lockers, I wore a vintage Indian block printed dress by Geeta Enterprises - another Vinted buy - with a denim waistcoat I bought from a charity shop last summer for a couple of quid.

I've been wearing these white leather trainers a lot lately,  which I bought from a charity shop a couple of years ago. They're from a German-based company called Groundies who believe that walking barefoot is the most natural way to move and employ fairly-paid workers in Portugal to hand craft their footwear. These trainers are absolutely brilliant when my arthritis is playing up. They retail at €129 - I paid £4.50!!! I'm almost too scared to wear them too much and ruin them.

I bought these enamel and brass tribal earrings in Panjiim, the state capital of Goa back in 2020. The Gucci-ish sunglasses were from a supermarket in Rhodes.

We had the house repointed and repainted at the end of last year, although it looks a billion times better I'm missing all the clutter. I can't wait to get my window boxes planted up and have masses of geraniums and nasturtiums spilling out from our terracotta pots, but I shall be patient and wait until May when the danger of frost is over.

Over the weekend we weeded the gravel, the cracks between the pavers and the front border and shifted the wrought iron table, chairs and bench to the patio area from elsewhere in the garden. Our house is south-facing and this area is a wonderful suntrap, the thermometer regularly records temperatures in the high 20s when it's only12°C everywhere else - we can pretend we're on holiday on sunny days!

We bought the table, chairs and bench from a clearance sale twenty years ago. They could do with a lick of paint, I need to have a rummage in the outhouses, I'm sure I've got half a pot of this pale green somewhere.

On Monday, for a trip to the charity shops, I wore a vintage Indian cotton block printed dress I bought from eBay for £3.50 in 2018 and my gold Adidas trainers which Jon found in a charity shop earlier this year (and were worn to walk 54 miles around Cyprus last month!)

Talking of charity shops, this lot was one of Jon's best recent hauls - all from the same shop on the same day.

I've fallen behind with photographing our charity shop finds of late but here's my latest Vinted buy, Speedo Endurance swimsuit with the tags still attached (the seller bought the wrong size and couldn't be bothered to return it). I love the trippy print and it got lots of love from my mates down at the swimming pool this morning. Excuse the demented expression, it was 7.30am!

I'm meeting Nikki in Birmingham tomorrow for some culture, curry and craft beer.
See you soon!

  1. I love your nails. That blue is stunning. I would like to get my nails done but I have no self control. The last time I went in for ‘something simple’ and came out with massive pink extensions with glitter in them. They looked beautiful but I could barely even type lol. Maybe I’ll test my self control again over the summer. It’s really cold here, but at least it’s sunny so that’s something. Xxx

    1. Thanks, Louise! I can understand you getting carried away, my technician specialises in nail art and her designs are incredible! I'm amazed by gel manicures, my nails always used to split really easily, now they grow so long so quickly I have trouble zipping my dresses up! I'll take sunny and cold over grey and wet! xxx

    1. I hope you had some lovely weather for your trip to Wales, Lisa! These bright skies and sunshine are so very welcome. Yes, I'd far rather be a trollop than have a mean spirit and begrudge any joy life offers us. I never thought I'd ever wear trainers but the need for comfort comes to us all eventually! xxx

  3. What a record hail, all I ever find are Val Doonacan and Barry Manilo in my local charity shops!
I am a lady who also gets her nails done regularly. I enjoy having it done but also love that I am supporting a small business in the city. It is so much a part of my routine I would miss it. I find the whole process really relaxing and the colour selection is always updating so I never get bored.
Enjoy your day out tomorrow, it sounds fab.

  4. I’m about to embark on having my nails done as I’m off on the Northern Belle train next week and I’m not going with broken scraggy nails 💅. My weekly indulgence is having my hair washed and blown. I’ve had it done for years. I love it as I don’t touch until I go to the hairdressers the following week. I’ve told her she can’t retire haha xx

  5. Hi Vix.
I have read and really enjoyed your posts for about five years now. Love your writing.
We went to India for a month last year and fell in love with the country. May I ask if you plan on going again?
    Very good wishes, Sarah

    1. Hello Sarah, lovely to meet you! I'm glad you loved your month in India! We did have five year visas, sadly they only got used once (in 2020) and they've now expired. We've no plans to go back at the moment, we're enjoying the novelty of short-haul flights and no paperwork but we will go back eventually. xxx

    2. Aw, thanks so much for the reply, I think this is the first time I have ever asked someone a question online! I looked at your India posts when we got to Goa, very informative and interesting. We are aiming for Varanasi next time, fingers crossed. How bloody lucky are we?? xx

  8. Great find with the records, the Pink Floyd album is treasure. Loving the Indian vibe dresses. Nails look beautiful, do your own nails stay healthy beneath? I have never tried gel, Biab nails are the in thing apparently as more gentle on the nail bed. Your house looks smart but it will look eye popping when you get the window boxes crammed. 1. Thanks, Betty! Jon gave the Pink Floyd album to a friend who absolutely loves them, he was very happy.
My nails look really good without the polish, no damage or discolouration. I have to get Charlotte to file mine down as they grow so long and so quickly, i can hardly believe they're my hands! The salon does offer BIAB, its the best option if you've got very weak or brittle nails.
I can't wait to get my pots planted up! xxx

  9. Good morning my lovely, sorry to have been so AWOL - currently sunning it on Orkney for an extended rummage around old stones and being a total neolithic nerd!

Said rummaging has done my nails no good at all, and coupled with gardening and life in general my hands are a total disgrace at present. I had been wondering about a gel manicure but concerned what state your natural nails end up in after a while? Would love to know your views, xx

    1. You've been missed and your trip sounds wonderful, I hope you're enjoying the weather!
Gel manicures do not damage to your nails as long as you go to a reputable salon, the damage only occurs if your nails are over-filed before application and you remove the gel yourself. Be very suspicious of very low prices (inferior product/poorly paid staff). I can't believe how mine look with or without polish, I was ashamed of them for years! xxx

  10. Oh, so great to find a local place when it comes to manicures. Such a wonderful relationship and I am certain you are great for advertisement with your beautiful manicures. Awesome finds in sneakers! Love your music finds, as well. Good luck on finding that paint for the table and chairs. Such a bright spot you have there for sunny days. I always enjoy your post. Such beautiful vibes. All the best to a lovely spring. Still a cheer here in the midlands, but I am sure it will be warmer by Saturday. Thank you so much for reading and your wonderful comments 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

  13. Hello,
I love your gel nails and the fact that you're supporting a local business, I've never done gel nails, I do my manicure myself! I also liked your looks and your stories with the purchases you make, always good deals, I was happy to hear that these sneakers are made in Portugal and that the workers are paid fairly - hard to believe!
Your house looks beautiful and you look amazing in that swimsuit!
    Happy week!

I do hope the trainer makers are fairly paid (and treated). xxx

  14. I have to confess I've never had my nails done. Mine are such a disgrace that I'm sure a technician would take fright and run a mile :-) Yours are magnificent! As are your outfits, as always!
Seeing Stonecroft's façade brought back happy memories. Well done on lavishing some TLC on your garden. I've made a start as well, but it'll take a lot of time and effort for transforming the jungle junkyard back to an actual garden.
I saw Jon's vinyl haul on Facebook the other day. What fantastic finds! xxx

  15. Your blue nails look beautiful. I agree with what you said about supporting local businesses. People complain that there are no more small businesses, but they shop in malls all the time. They must realize that you cannot have your cake and eat it. Either don't shop in malls and buy local or stop complaining, I always say.

I have never had my nails done. Not in a nail place anyway. I did have a hand massage once and my nails painted...does that count? It was this pampering for ladies event in Mostar. It was done by a group of ladies from UK. I think they are a church group. They travel and host these pampering events. A friend of mine is a priest here, so they know a lot of English expats here and are often involved in these kind of events. I did my share and helped by braiding hair and doing a jewellery workshop. It was a fun evening. Very fun ladies. I digress.

These are gorgeous outfits. I love your white sneakers...and the gold sneakers are fabulous as well.
    Your garden looks lovely.
The music finds are just wow.
The print on that Speedo swimsuit is fabulous!!!!

    1. Thanks, Ivana! People are always moaning about the death of the high street and how rubbish our town is, the least we can do is support those brave enough to open little independent businesses or they'll be nothing but Primark & MacDonalds (I'd rather go naked and eat out of a bin than patronise those establishments!)
I used to have hand massages in India - they were so cheap and helped ladies feed their families. Those ladies sound lovely - I'd have supported your church by having you braid my hair, I love it when you plait your hair! xxx

  21. Exile on Main Street will be worth a bob or two now. Just bought my son a few albums for his birthday for his new turntable. He was telling me he fancied a Verve album on EBay but it was 80quid! Most I spent on each vinyl was £8 for Zenyatta Mondatta. Also bought myself a Rod Stewart greatest hits album for £2. It had a St. Michael label on it. No idea Marks and Sparks sold albums back then!Love your new colourway.xx

  24. The nails look great. I like getting a pedicure but loathe getting a manicure done - I've got this index finger nail that got ripped at an angle when I was a kid and it never grew back straight and so as soon as it grows anything, it digs in and itches so I always nibble it off. Bad habit but since I need short nails for playing the the flute and piano, I don't mind!
So much Block-printed goodness. Came back from Madeira with no buys except a garlic plate for mum and some funky crisps but was tempted by a waistcoat in a shop called Natura! Your new swimsuit is pretty!
