New Old Clothes & Some Cat Chat

Welcome to my ever-evolving wardrobe! I love how it changes on a near-weekly basis. I've sold a huge amount of my clothes over the last few months so there's plenty of room for everything to fit into my wardrobe and, as the vast majority of them are cotton, I can wear them all year-round & don't need to do the seasonal swap-over like so many of my friends.

Here's what I've worn over the last week incorporating some new-to-me, recently acquired goodies.

This Indian cotton, block printed "Athena" blouse by high end label, M.A.B.E, was a 2024 Vinted buy, I made the skirt using a vintage Indian bedspread on my sewing day with Liz last week (see it HERE) and the vintage Moroccan belt was a £3 Vinted find. Well, a friend spotted it, alerted me via a WhatsApp message and I snaffled it seconds later.

I made this maxi-length waistcoat last year using a 1971 dressmaking pattern and a pair of 1970s Morris & Co. Golden Lily curtains bought from a local charity shop (my choker was made with the leftovers).

The vintage Ayesha Davar cheesecloth maxi dress had been in my wardrobe for years and was recently restored to her former glory by Jon & his dyeing skills.

The dusky pink Indian handloomed cotton wraparound top is another recent Vinted find. One of my festival trading neighbours was selling these for £45 last Summer, this was £5.

This 1969 Chelsea Girl cheesecloth dress has been in my wardrobe for years and has always been too long and too big - last week I washed it (possibly for the first time, I'm such a slattern) and now it's the right size and length. I know it's from 1969 as I was wearing it when I bumped into a lady who'd owned the same dress in her youth!

This reversible cotton kantha jacket was a charity shop find last week for £4.50. Kantha, if you're not familiar with the term, is an embroidery craft from the eastern region of India and consists of old clothes stacked on top of each other and hand-stitched to make a single piece of fabric. Recycling at its most stylish!

There's pockets on either side with wooden toggles on the printed side and coconut shell buttons on the plain side. In India you can pick these jackets up from chi-chi boutiques for around £50 but if you buy them from the likes of Toast or the V&A you can pay up to £400!

This All About Audrey kaftan is so useful, it screws up to almost nothing, is relatively crease-free & has no fiddly fastenings making it perfect for wearing down to the swimming baths for my twice-weekly swim. Did I mention that we're using the big pool as well as the brine pool now? It's so much quieter in there enabling me to swim a mile in under 40 minutes - it takes me the same amount of time to swim 3/4 mile in the other pool (a combination of chatting to my mates and dodging the width swimmers!)

Stamped ROAM, I can't find anything out about this silver necklace made from what looks like replica Ancient Greek or Roman coins so it's likely a tourist souvenir. It was £3 from a charity shop last week.

Quick, my friend & fellow blogger, Annie messaged me last week, there's a Naked Generation dress on Vinted for £12....seconds later and it was mine! I loved this since I spotted it on their website back in 2022 but couldn't justify the £175 price tag. Thanks, Annie!!

As you'd expect from NG, the quality is fabulous. Three people stopped to admire it when I wore it at the weekend.

Remember the whopper of a crystal ring I bought for £1.50 last week? Well, this rather fab ring in the foreground of the photo was from the same charity shop (at the same price), no maker's marks on this one but it's another huge lump that fits my massive hands so I imagine it was donated by the same stylish person.

Nothing new here, you've seen my All About Audrey cotton wraparound skirt and my vintage Ayesha Davar cheesecloth blouse before but....

Did you notice my eyewear? I've bought another couple of pairs of prescription sunglasses from Specsavers. I used to have them just for reading in the summer but with varifocal lenses I can wear them all the time without tripping over my own feet and with the graduated lenses on the square pair, I can wear them indoors without looking like I've had a heavy night. They weren't cheap but with my weird eye issues & crap eyesight they really are a game changer.

Cat update!!! I always feel like somebody's watching me...I texted Jon last week. (Sorry about the Rockford earworm).

Yes, Gordon's still visiting us.

I was reading a comment from Louise in the Midlands asking if William's brother had moved in yet when I looked up and saw him sitting in the hallway. He's getting braver by the day.

When I come downstairs at 6am he's camped out on the windowsill waiting for his breakfast. He and William trill at each other (the chirrup cats use to communicate with each other in a friendly way) and over the last couple of days he's started miaowing at Jon & me.

William's totally chilled about it all. He's like his mother, give us a bit of sunshine and we're happy.

Power Paws!!

They're even hanging out together in Jacob's pen.

It's our Never Had A Wedding Anniversary tomorrow, 33 years of unmarried bliss! I'm not sure there'll be much celebrating, after our early morning swim I'm off to the dentist for a root canal...wish me luck!

See you soon.

  1. HI Vix, I love your ring, and I adore the other one you bought the other day. I hope your dentistry goes well, dentists are brilliant at analgesia these days so fingers crossed you are OK. I also wanted to thank you for your travel guide of a few weeks ago. We watched Alice Roberts in Greece last week and decided to book a break to Crete. We leave at the end of next month and I followed your suggestions and saved £600 on a week for 2! So many thanks I owe you a large drink! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price. I thought I was savvy but it seems not, I am very happy to learn though, haha! Once again Ta Marra! as we say up here.

  2. Oh what a lovely stash of goodies. I especially like the pink wrap top and the Naked Generation dress. You are definitely the queen of stylish bargains. I am one of those wardrobe swap over people. I’m just wondering how far off swap is. You’re right, a decent pair of glasses is definitely a game changer, and those ones you bought are fab. Have a great week.

P.s. nope, the car isn’t behaving this week! Xxx

  4. Your long waistcoat brought to mind one my mum made for me, she was an excellent seamstress making everything from wedding dresses to suits. You would like to get your hands on the contents of my spare room where I have my clothes from the 60s and 70s packed away, dresses, coats, hats etc. some bought and some made by mum to my designs. One hat in particular came from Carnaby Street when I was about 15 as did some of my rings. My friend bought a cloak from Lord John. I still have my hat in the bag it came in, I recall the name on the bag is Gear. My clothes are going nowhere until I'm gone!
Sadly, unlike you, my girlish figure is not the same and I doubt I could walk in those platform shoes now. However, the hats, gloves, bags and jewellery still fit and do get worn. I also have a sewing box full of vintage Simplicity patterns and I used to make lots of my own clothes too, including a pair of yellow flairs which I made from a cotton sheet and then dyed, whilst at home from University.
Hello to your lovely new cat, progress is being made and things look very promising.
My little girl cat is a tuxedo and she chirrups and trills at me, she doesn't appear to have a meow, but occasionally mimes one. Her brother does meow but doesn't have a very loud one.
Glad your newcomer is getting braver, the more cats the better.😃
I also say you can never have too many handbags or too much jewellery!

    1. Hello Jean! Oh my word, the thought of your spare room has me drooling, how clever you were to hold on to everything so you can recapture those memories of the glorious 1960s and 70s. I'm familiar with both the Lord John & the Gear labels, I recently sold an incredible dusky pink Gear maxi dress bought from the original owner and have a Lord John suede coat in the shed! You were one cool & stylish chick.
How interesting that your tuxedo girl chirrups at you, she must think you're a cat! Gordon's very vocal with William and is gradually learning with us. He gets braver by the day! xxx

    1. Thanks, Kezzie! I get what you mean about the swimming, when I stopped going a few years ago I kind of got out of the habit and it took ages to get back into the routine. I was chatting to a woman in there on Tuesday, she'd just swum her first length and said that it was me who'd inspired he to give it a go (she's normally a width swimmer). By the end of the session she'd done 6, I was so proud! xxx

  8. Happy Definitely Not a Wedding Anniversary, you two lovebirds! <3 And wonderful to see Gordon is warming up to you - I love seeing both of your kitties lounging around in the sun. We call "power paws" Superkitty! (like Superman!).
One day (she said, optimistically) I'll have an all-season wardrobe again! I love that you've honed your style so well. Every outfit is more gorgeous than the last. Your new Moroccan belt is divine, and I always drool over your jewelry, Vix.
I love your new knuckle-duster ring - is that writing around the edge? Why don't the skinny-fingered people donate stuff like that? So unfair! I rarely find rings that are small enough to fit me.

    1. Thanks so much, Sheila! SuperKitty! I love it!
I love having a reduced wardrobe and having everything I need hanging up and ready to wear but I'll never ever be a minimalist - that's just unnatural!
That ring does look like it's got something etched on the sides in the photo but its smooth, I was trying not to photograph myself in it! xx

  12. Hi Vix, I feel like I haven't commented in ages. I love Naked Generation and just recently bought 4 of them second-hand in Oz. How they found themselves here I don't know. I too wear cotton all year round, the only other fibre I wear is wool so I'm spoiled for choice at home. I too love a massive ring, and have small fingers, so I'm always hunting for rings and I find the stones all too small. I need them BIG!. Hope Gordon plucks up the courage to move in permanently.

    1. It's lovely to hear from you, Diane! It's been ages! Fancy Naked Generation getting all the way around the world to Australia and crazy that you're finding them second-hand, I can't get my head around someone going off them and wanting to sell them on!
I've always cursed my big hands but it works to my advantage when it comes to finding big, bold rings! xxx

  13. Congratulations on another year of togetherness! You are a perfect pair.

I can't believe two things: 1. how organized your wardrobe is (well, you are a pro), and 2. how well you sew for a lady who has claimed she doesn't know how.

And now I have that earworm too! ps. it's Rockwell...

  14. Hi Vix, so many gorgeous things to comment on again. I am rather envious of your gorgeous Moroccan leather belt, you can't beat a good belt! I love the pairing of the Morris and Co. groovy long waistcoat with the newly dyed black embroidered dress too. It puts me in mind of one of my 'Ghost' dresses ( of which I have a few both inherited and bought second hand). The star of the show though goes to the 'Naked Generation ' stunner. It puts me in mind of the Aesthetic Dress movement as the sort of thing enlightened women of that period wore in the company of the likes of Oscar Wilde. You would have fitted in well there!

    1. Hello Alysia! That belt is lovey, I like the combination of brass and silver, I hate it when the buckle is a different colour to the jewellery I'm wearing.
Vintage Ghost dresses are lovely, I kind of regret selling mine! Being plain they were really good foundations for an outfit.
That Naked Generation dress is a beauty, they made a green version, too! xxx

  16. Oh my such lovely clothes. The wrap around one is like one I wore in the 60s in fact I wore a lot of Indian fabrics and cheese cloth. I had an Afghan coat like you wear some times too. Some of your charity shop jewellery is really amazing, I bet those large rings were really expensive first time round. William is such a handsome boy his paws are fab. Looks like Gordon has adopted you. I love those trill noises cats make. Good luck with the dentist. Congratulations on 33 years together ❤. Regards Sue H
