Cats and Cowboys

I wasn't intending on publishing a blog post today but I'm currently trapped beneath a cat so I shan't be going anywhere for the next couple of hours. Here's what we've been up to so far this weekend.

Saturday was another icy day but with a sack of parcels to drop off (and a couple to collect), we wrapped up and walked into town.

As they say, there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes and despite the sub zero temperatures I was toasty warm in my vintage sheepskin hat, 1970s corduroy coat and chunky soled boots and I'm sure that the brisk three mile walk helped, too. I laughed when Jon presented me with these Pachamama wrist warmers in the 70°C heat of Tenerife for my birthday in 2023 but they've rarely been off my arms lately.

Back at home I photographed & listed a few things on Vinted, selling them within minutes, before settling down for an afternoon with Charles Manson.

As we say round these parts, he was a wrong 'un and one can't help but draw parallels with what's going in the world today, tell the disaffected what they want to hear and they'll follow without question, often committing the most appalling atrocities in your name and, if you're clever, you can even get them to take the blame.

We'd popped into B&M to look for de-icer and, as always when one sets foot in that place, came out with something else entirely. This time it was a Punjabi Chana Masala meal kit, easy enough to make from scratch at just over a quid, having tried others in the same Spice Tailor range (Fiery Goan and Keralan coconut) I know they're usually both tasty and authentic.

It was delicious with some of Jon's homemade aloo chat, basmati rice and a glass or two of vino. I might have to buy a couple more for the festival season!

With a few days left of our months subscription to Netflix we started American Primeval. Based in Utah Territory in 1857, Wild and untamed, the United States army, Mormon militia, Native Americans and pioneers are all locked in a brutal war for survival. Caught in the bloody crossfire are every man, woman and child who dare to enter this American primeval.  Not for the feint-hearted, its pretty brutal but the cinematography is breath-taking and the story had us on the edge of our seats, we're halfway through it already!

It was a balmy 3°C this morning, the warmest it's been for almost a fortnight. After breakfast we popped down to the clearance charity shop to drop off a bag of books and deposit the Vinted sales in the Lidl lockers.

It's the third time I've worn this reworked Uzbek coat and it continues to draw compliments, a hip young woman even chased me into the shop to tell me how cool I looked!

It was the first outing for my new-to-me cowboy boots, handmade in El Paso and bought from a thrift shop in Texas thirty years ago by the Vinted seller. These are my eighth pair of cowboy boots, Houston, I think we have a problem!

Needless to say, we didn't leave the charity shop empty-handed, with a pile of books and shirts for both me and Jon.

Not sure what Jon's done with his shirt but here's mine, the print is a Liberty knock-off.

Along with a cheeky Vinted purchase, I've managed to increase my blouse count to 22 this week. I get a insane amount of pleasure from opening my wardrobe and sighing over the colours and prints (simple things....)

I managed to finish Charles Manson with a mug of tea in bed this morning and I'm now a quarter of the way through Trust, Herman Diaz's 2023 Pulitzer Prize winning novel. It's phenomenally good.

Tonight it's a squeaky cheese tea (Haloumi with roasted veg), more of American Primeval and The Pottery Throwdown. It's my weekly hair wash, too - that's if William ever gets off my lap!

  1. Being pinned by a cat sounds about the most delicious of Sunday activities - one to be encouraged ☺️ I just feel 'blessed' if our crotchety ol' girl sits on the settee arm next to me - my day is made!
Love your warm outfits - very you and gorgeous x

  2. oh how I wish mollie would pin me down! not much chance, if I get to friendly she swipes me! but I slept in the spare room to avoid disturbing hubby from his early shift last night and she did curl up on my bed at intervals. I love those hats and yes, like you, I love looking at the prints in my wardrobe - yours looks like a work of art - you can never have too many blouses either when they are as pretty as yours. I have yet to find anything on Vinted and suspect I haven't got the hang of doing good searches yet. I am just about to go back to the book you sent me - haven't had time to read for ages! Betty x

    1. It's very exciting and a bit of a novelty, Betty! He did the same yesterday the started to grumble and launched himself at my arm. I bet you'll get there in the end with Mollie, it took Polly Piglet five years!
I love seeing all the pattern n my wardrobe, its such a joy on a dull day. Persevere with Vinted, keep liking things so the algorithm picks up what you like an starts making suggestions! xxx

  6. I'm learning about cat paralysis with Little Miss. She's under 6 pounds but impossible to relocate once settled in. How are your boots for the icy walk? I need a good grippy sole to ensure my stability. While not too icy, my walk to the grocery store/ mail box drop just in tennis shoes was a poor choice of footwear.

    1. Once a cat decides you're their bed, you've got no chance! The chunky soled boots I'm wearing on Saturday are brilliant in the ice, they've got thick, grooved soles and they're a wide fit which means I can wear two pairs of socks and stop the cod getting to my Arthritic toes! Jon's made the mistake of wearing trainers when've we've walked down into town on a frosty day before now and I've had to hold him up! xxx

  7. Lol, you have cat-alepsy, as we call it. "Can you get me some tea? I have catalepsy!" Good luck budging Sir William from your warm lap!

I love that - we just don't dress properly for the weather! "Americanah" is really good - it was a Book Club pick a few years ago.

  8. That's right, we don't dress appropriately for every weather condition! Your coat is great and so is the hat in the first photos, I love them! Surely the people always find themselves involved in wars that they do not want!! Have a great week Vix with lots of tea reading and Netflix!! Be well!!

  9. Trapped by a cat! I can think of worse ways to spend your time. You're looking as glam as ever, and I'm impressed by how many books you get through. My waiting-to-be-read pile never seems to diminish. Will look out for 'The Spice Tailor' next time I'm in B&M as that looks tasty. Val x

    1. Thanks, Val! He's only recently become a lap cat, he's been curled up across my feet all night, bless him! I try and read a few pages every day, it gives me a good excuse to keep buying more books.
The Punjabi Chana Masala was really tasty, watch out for the dried chillies! xxx

  10. Love Spice Tailor - when it's on offer - and had taken out that very pack to go with tonight's meal. Try the Punjabi Tomato Curry as it is delicious and, if you haven't done so, I'd suggest a look at their website.

  11. Don't know if I could cope with American Primeval. Too much death and destruction lately, on tv and off.Last night's SAS was harrowing (not been binge watching so weekly episodes for me). Call the Midwife's about my strength at mo! His Lordship might like that new prog 'The Good Ship Murder'? It really is sooooo bad it's almost good!Fabulous outfits only you can carry off!Great score on the books too.xx

    1. American Primeval very gory but we ended up watching the entire series over two nights! I loved the first series of SAS Rogue Heroes but I think the second one is even better, it took every bit of will power not to watch the whole thing in one go.
Jon's been watching The Good Ship Murder, you know him so well! xxx

  12. On NYE we farewelled our 18 YO Frida Kahlo; she was our naughty torty. It is lovely to see how well William has taken over, he is both handsome and lucky. We are looking for a TV series that is not gory; I am a bit over the ones we've been watching.

    1. Oh Lynette, I'm so sorry to read about Frida Kahlo, we had a naughty torty and still miss her desperately. What a wonderfully long & happy life she had with you.
I know what you mean, the violence ad gore is relentless in so many TV series of late. I'm not sure if you can find it but there's a brilliant Danish subtitled series called Carmen Curlers, dramatising the history of the heated rollers. It sounds like an odd subject but both Jon & I loved it, its stylish, witty and splendid fun and no violence, guns or explosions! xxx

  13. Oops sorry that was me above.

  14. Love the Uzbek coat, you look fab as ever. I like the shirt colours and patterns. I colour code my wardrobe so much easier to find stuff. William is not daft is he? Having a cat sit on your lap is a good excuse to relax I find. Regards Sue H

  18. I've seen that spice tailor stuff in B&M and always wondered, I may have to try it out. I'm constantly in B&M, or Bum bargains as we like to call it, buying lunchbox fillers and chicken free dog treats (Thelma is allergic to chicken). You can't control what you go into bum to buy. What a glorious collection of blouses. So many lovely colours, of course it would cheer you to look at them. Happy reading, stay warm. Oh, and I'd definitely recommend Nosferatu. xxx
