Inspired by a few blogs I read over the weekend, I thought I'd write a post on my current beauty regime. I don't claim to have any knowledge of skincare, I had horrendous eczema throughout my childhood, followed by late-onset acne during my thirties & early forties but with my 58th birthday just 18 days away, I'm finally at peace with my skin.
My face tells the story of my life. I'm a long-time party girl and a sun-worshipper, I endured chronic pain from an undetected birth defect for the first 39 years of my life, had a high-flying, stressful career which nearly killed me and, like most women of my age, dealt with parents (and a grandparent) with cruel & incurable illnesses and their subsequent deaths. I've earnt every one of my wrinkles. I'm not daft enough to believe that anything you can buy off the shelf will make you look younger, it's all down to genetics at the end of the day. I'm just happy not to wake up scabby or spotty!
I don't use cleanser, its soap and water all the way. I wash my face with Patounis pure olive oil soap and a natural honeycomb sponge.
Earlier this year one of the discount shops in town was closing down and was selling these normally quite pricey (ie., over a tenner!) ethical, sustainably produced, vegan & cruelty-free Beauty Kitchen products for £1 each. I've made my own facial oil for the last couple of years but thought I'd give the Abyssinian Oil Facial Concentrate a go and was so impressed that I went back and bought another three bottles. I use this morning and night after I've washed my face. The Seahorse Plankton Eye Lift and Illumination Serum is fantastic and soon sorts out my early morning puffy eyes, the shop only had one of these but I managed to find an eBay seller offering two bottles for £5 (funnily enough, it turns out she lives in Walsall so she probably bought them from the same shop!). The Handbag Beauty Balm is a fantastic all-rounder, I use it around my eyes at night but it works as a lip balm and for removing eye make-up amongst other uses, making it perfect for travel.
A couple of times a week I use this Hyaluronic Booster as an alternative to my facial oil. I remove my eye make-up and lipstick (I've never worn foundation) with Nivea's Double-Effect Eye Makeup Remover (I'm always looking for special offers, at the moment it's £2.99 in Bodycare, £1 cheaper than Superdrug.) These Barry M reusable make-up remover pads came free with a promotion back in January, I chuck them in the washing machine when they're dirty.
When I remember, I use one of these Body Shop Ethiopian Honey masks (another find from that shop), I'm down to my last 15 so I'm trying to eke them out! The Beauty Kitchen Quick Fix Mask is really good, just the job when I'm looking a bit jaded after a week at a festival.
Apart from the evenings before I go swimming, I've always used a body moisturiser after showering. At the moment I've still got a decent stock of The Body Shop British Rose body butters, another bargain from that shop. This Aromaco solid deodorant bar from Lush is in its second year.
In the shower, I usually just use Patounis soap with my sponge (bought from Kalymnos back in the summer) but spotted these two still-sealed Philosophy shower gels in a charity shop the other day for £1 the pair - they retail at £15 each, a saving of £29!! They smell gorgeous.
I was running low on my usual Lush shampoo and conditioner bars so picked up this Luxurious Lengths conditioner from Lidl (on offer for 99p) and snaffled this Aussie shampoo, also especially formulated for long hair, after spotting it lurking on the clearance shelf in Asda for 75p. The Aussie shampoo smells like Aperol Spritz, making my weekly hair wash all the more enjoyable!
A special shout-out to this new product from Cutex, It's the best nail polish remover I've ever used, it even removes glitter in seconds. It currently retails at £2 in Bodycare.
Have you tried any of these products or is there any beauty product you've recently discovered that you'd care to share?
ReplyDeleteI haven't used any of the products shown yet. But I would like to.
Especially the Eye Lift Serum and the Facial Concentrate. :)
I didn't think that eye lift would make much difference but it's probably the best I've tried. xxx
Deleteas a lifelong scabby leper who at the moment has shingles for the thousandth time , nothing except a bag over my head improves my skin long term , so i humour it as best i can
ReplyDeleteOh no, you poor thing. Shingles is vile. It's a shame you're too young for the vaccine. xxx
DeleteI haven't tried any of these products. I don't believe in the insanely priced serums promising miracles. Just like to keep my skin clean and hydrated.
ReplyDeleteSame here, Hena! As long as my skin feels clean and not tight and dry I'm happy. I'm not bothered about eternal youth! xxx
DeleteI use a gentle Neutrogena face wash, loads of moisturizer-first with a 15 spf, then something more robust; currently an Aveeno version. If I do any make up, it's just a bit of mascara and blush to bring out a little brightness. I have used lipstick, gloss etc. In ages. To remove, I like micelloular water with a cotton pad, resusable or just the round ones. I took believe I earned whatever my face is showing. I usually get people surprised by my age, or shocked when I share the ages of my older children. I've been asked bluntly, how young was I when I had my kids. Now I'm.getting funny remarks about retiring "at my young age".
ReplyDeleteNeutrogena and Aveeno, I've never used either of those but they've been around for years so they must be pretty good. I'm all about the creme blusher, it's an instant boost and makes so much difference to a tired face. I'd take retiring at your young age as a compliment, Sam! xxx
DeleteYour beauty regime has great results. You look beautiful. My ex boss used to spend hundreds on pots of face products (I won't name names!) and I can assure you, she wasted her money! After all, if these miracle creams worked, plastic surgeons would be out of a job! My daughter in law bought me some Ordinary Rose facial oil which I use at night, it really feeds your skin but at nearly 71yrs of age, I'm not too worried about the odd line or wrinkle. Above ground and underneath the stars will do for now!!xxx
ReplyDeleteI'm not anonymous, I'm me!!
DeleteOf course you're not anonymous, you're Annie! I've never understood people who spend so much on skincare, mind you they'd probably say the same about me and dresses or cheap flights! I'm keen to try that Ordinary stuff, especially the sound of the rose oil.
DeleteAbove the ground and underneath the stars, that made me chuckle! Please keep it that way! xxx
Aha! I think I've cracked the anonymous thing - sign in with Google and it comes up automatically...
ReplyDeleteI love reading about other people's beauty routines (yours is the second I've read today!). I love the look of the Ethiopian range you're using and I have the same Hyaluronic booster serum but not used it yet... I use Superdrug Vit E facewash and muslin cleansing cloth in the morning and clean my make up off at night using Lidl's cleansing milk and wipes. I use Aldi eye cream and serum and an Elizabeth Arden Visible difference day cream and night cream that I buy on the ferry to Ireland where it's always on special offer usually 2 for 20 or 25.00. I manage to pick up quite a few toiletries from the food bank where we can purchase things considered non -essentials for a donation so I rarely have to buy body moisturising lotion or creams. My absolute favourites are the Soap and Glory body butters and lotions as well as the Sanctuary range. Just lately I've discovered the OGX shampoo and conditioner range (love the coconut and the collagen ones) and buy them when they're on special offer somewhere; which they almost always are. I'm always on the hunt for the perfect red lippy, too!
xxx
I do miss your blog Vronni (from Australia).
DeleteMe too !
DeleteI agree with Lynette and ElaineD, we miss you Vronnie!
DeleteI had a spate of using the Superdrug hot cloth cleaner but went back to soap and water, I adored their Vitamin E Instant Radiance Moisturiser and used it for almost 30 years, why oh why did they stop making it? I've heard good things about the Elizabeth Arden cream, it always seems to be on offer in Duty Free. Sue mentioned Sanctuary, I used to love that and have forgotten all about it. Soap and Glory used to be a favourite with young bloggers back in the day, it's a brand I've never tried, I often see their pretty toilet bags in charity shops. I've not heard of OGX but you got me on coconut, love the smell of coconuts, it's a holiday in a bottle. My friend Lynn recommends Dove's coconut body lotion, I might have to give that a try. xxx
I’m The Ordinary all the way - I buy during their Slowvember for 23% off and restock from Boots and get their loyalty points (money off!) when needed. Never had any issues with their products. Have used pretty much all of the moisturising stuff - also their retinal emulsion. Currently using Retinal in the evening with Natural Moisturising Factor + HA, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 (with Ceramides) serum and Natural Moisturising Factor + HA for the day. A little goes a long way.
ReplyDeleteI don’t use soap and water on my face - happiest with micellar water in a spray bottle wiped off with muslin baby wipes (wash and use again and again) - bonus - the weave gives the gentlest exfoliation. Grahams C+cream for magically making my sexy atopic dermatitis go away (from around my mouth and chin - so alluring). Sanex Atopicare for keeping my skin on when bathing (readily available from Superdrug et al). I don’t use shampoo; conditioner - something with keratin. (Shampoo opens the hair cuticle and any lovely semi permanent hair colour will wash out). I'm 67 and I'm told I don't look it - but this is what 67 actually looks like, dear.
I avoid the sun and am as pale as a pale thing in Pale Town during the Pale Festival and have no fear of lines or age - there's a lot worse things to worry about lol Elaine Anon
Hello Elaine! I've heard great things about The Ordinary and the pricing is really good, I didn't realise they sold them in Boots, I shall have a look when I'm running low on my Beauty Kitchen supplies. Making a mental note of all your other suggestions, too.
DeleteI've read about shampoo opening up the hair cuticle before, I don't wash my hair very often so I always think I need shampoo to get rid of the dirt it accumulates from living in a town or spending a week in a field!
That makes me laugh when people say you don't look your age, its such a back handed compliment. You look good should be enough! xxx
I love reading about people's beauty routines and it's refreshing to read one from someone who's down-to-earth enough not to believe in expensive miracle lotions and potions. You're right in saying that it's all down to genetics and I believe I've been lucky in that respect. It definitely helps if one's feeling good in one's skin and is happy to accept the inevitable wrinkles, which indeed tell the story of one's life.
ReplyDeleteI used the Beauty Kitchen Seahorse Plankton serum during the pandemic, but the shop where I got it seems to no longer stock it. It lasted for ages, though.
I still got one of your Body Shop British Rose body butters, which I'm saving for a rainy day! It smells seriously good! xxx
Yes, you have fantastic skin, Ann! I'd rather spend my money on holidays and vintage clothes than silly face creams promising us the earth. I thought seahorse plankton sounded a bit odd at first but it's lovely stuff and doesn't sit on top of my skin and leave a weird residue like other eye creams I've tried.
DeleteThat rose scent is gorgeous, not too sweet or girly! xxx
Hello lovely Vix, I think we will both grow old gracefully won’t we, none of this aesthetics nonsense for us gals eh! Haha.
ReplyDeleteI’ve used Green People cleanser, moisturiser and serum for donkeys years and often get told I don’t look my real age 69. So that’ll do for me. And I’m not getting my hair cut short either
Have a super birthday lovely friend
Love from us two xxx
Definitely none of that aesthetics stuff, Lynn! I can think of far better things to waste my money on than trying to turn back the hand of time! You've got gorgeous skin and hair and are a great advert for Green People, a brand I've seen but never tried. Another thing for the list when I run out of the bargains! xxx PS Thanks so much!
DeleteOooh! I always enjoy a peek at other people's beauty buys, and you've got some lovely looking products there. I'm a big fan of Aussie shampoo and conditioner, and I also use an olive oil soap on my skin. I'm far too lazy to faff about with cleansers. Xx
ReplyDeleteI'm a lazy girl, too Jules. Soap and water and I'm good to go! I love how that Aussie shampoo smells! xxx
DeleteEven though years ago I worked on a cosmetics counter selling Lancome , Arden etc I now use mainly aqueous cream about £1 for a huge pot - Plus rose oil occasionally - My lines at 65 are not deep just yet - My money which is limited is spent on my furry family x
ReplyDeleteThat's very telling that you prefer to use aqueous cream and some rose oil rather than fancy brands despite having worked on the beauty counters. I suspect the women who buy that kind of thing is seduced by the packaging and the glamour rather than them making a radical difference to their skin. xxx
DeleteI also use a bit of coconut oil from a jar on my dry hair to smooth it as since I've gone grey it needs something - I used other products but this is cheaper and for me slightly better - I do use a serum after washing hair also x
DeleteI used to use Superdrug's own brand of serum and they've discontinued it, I'm gutted! There doesn't seem to be many available to use on dry hair. xxx
DeleteYou look beautiful. I use Burt’s Bees lotions, creams and salves. I love the quality, and they are priced reasonably at Target. I also like Trader Joe’s Coconut Body Butter. It smells divine! I buy handmade watermelon scented soap at our local soap shop. I used to make my own…
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Stephenie! Burt's Bees! I discovered them when I went to Boston back in 2000, I bought a lip balm from Urban Outfitters. I was thrilled when they started stocking it in the Uk. I've not bought any for years, I ought to revisit it! xxx
DeleteYou know I have never seen that Aussie shampoo in Australia, I have only ever bought when in the UK. I love that you say that you've earned each wrinkle, I feel the same way. I am impressed by your disciplined regime, I struggle with developing a routine, maybe once I step off the mad hamster when of work I will manage more balance. I love reading your blog Vix, you always inspire me.
ReplyDeleteHello Lynette! that's crazy that Aussie hair products aren't widely available in Australia! It does take a bit of effort to find time to use a face mask once a week or to swap the facial oil with the hyaluronic booster thingy, but I can definitely feel a difference when I do. Thanks for your kind words, it's always lovely to hear from you. Hope it's not too long before you can escape the hamster wheel of work! xxx
DeleteI use Vitamin C serum and L'Oreal Age Perfect face cream, I know some find it quite heavy but my skin just seems to love it. I alternate between L'Oreal and Nivea cleanser. I have always used rose water, either to cleanse when I'm not wearing make-up, or as a toner after using a cleanser. i used to get a huge bottle made up by the pharmacist in Boots, I'm sad they no longer do that. Currently using a Micellar Rose toner. I have super dry skin so always use a body butter, usually Body Shop, but currently using an Origins one I got given. I have to be careful which shampoo I use as I get a really sore blistered scalp with most commercial ones. I currently use Hask Coconut Shampoo which is paraben and sulphate free. Another fan of Aussie conditioner here!
ReplyDeleteYou're not the first person to mention Vitamin C serum, G! A friend on Facebook rates one by Boots. I love rose fragrances, when I mix my own facial oil I use rose essential oil. I didn't know you could use rosewater as a face cleanser/toner, I just thought it was for Indian sweets!
DeleteBody Shop butter is gorgeous, the Superdrug Vitamin E body butter is a cheap but nice smelling alternative and its often one a buy one, get one half price deal.
I've not heard of Hask, one for the list! xxx
Agree about the Cutex. It doesn't smell too horrible either.
ReplyDeleteI've always used their normal nail polish remover, I didn't know about this heavy-duty stuff, it really is fantastic! xxx
DeleteIntrigued to read this. You did well in that closing down shop! I might write a post like this at some point! I'll have to think what I use! Kezzie x
ReplyDeleteI'd love the read a post about your beauty products, Kezzie! I find what real women use far more helpful than some sponsored post by an influencer! It's a shame that stuff's so nice, it means I'll have to buy it at full price when I run out! xxx
DeleteYour looking fab so your beauty regime definitely works. Every line tells a story my Gran used to say and that is so true. Olive oil is a great skin moisturiser but for 60 odd years I have used Nivea face cream and people say I have good skin. I use soap and water to cleanse, and Nivea eye make up remover for mascara. That's about it. Interesting post, thank you. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteHello Sue! Nivea stuff is great, I often buy a little pot of the moisturiser when I'm away, it saves taking excess liquids through departures and is cheap enough to leave behind when I come home. A well known make-up artist once told me that Nivea wsa made in the same lab as Creme De La Mer so it had had the same cutting edge skin technology without the hefty price tag. xxx
DeleteNope, I have never tried any of those products. I'm a keep it simple girl through and through, although a shampoo that smells of one of your favourite drinks must be a brilliant thing. I'm soap and water, Head and Shoulders, Oil of Olay 7in1 face cream and Sanctuary Spa from Boots body cream. Only it's been a bit different this year I have been using up all of the Christmas present shower gels, face masks and bits and bobs that I got in 2021 and 2022 in a bid to get the bathroom cupboard emptied of everything. It's saved me a fortune and I'm nearly there now. Oh and I do use a bit of hair wax if I want my messy crop to look even slightly ordered. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOne of the places I used to work used to do a secret Santa thingy and I'd always request Boots vouchers so I could buy Sanctuary Spa stuff in the January sales, I loved the smell! I tend to only shop in Superdrug these days so I didn't know they still made it. xxx
DeleteI've never heard of Beauty Kitchen. Their products sound lovely! I'm obsessed with Ayurveda beauty products, although I've yet to try them as they cost an arm and a leg.
ReplyDeleteMy recent hair hero has been around for a while, but I bought a bottle when it was on offer...Moroccanoil Frizz Shield Spray. My frizzy textured hair has been driving me insane for a while and most things that work are short lived. However, this one is a game changer! I've been out in the snow this morning and still no frizz! I also like Jojoba oil for my skin.
xxx
I'd not heard of them before but the lady in the shop told me that they were ex-Holland & Barrett stock so I reckoned they'd be pretty good. It's a shame that shop's gone but it's well worth a look on eBay, I expect someone else from Walsall with more business savvy than me snapped up the remaining stock to sell on.
DeleteI've just Googled that Frizz Shield Spray and it sounds really good. Holy Grail hair stuff is a game changer. I'm still trying to find a replacement for Superdrug's Hyaluronic hair serum now they've discontinued it. Most of the serums on the market need to be applied to wet hair and I want something that you can use on dry. I don't think I've tried jojoba oil. I shall make a mental note when I've depleted my stash of Abyssinian oil! xxx
I live in Cyprus and moved on from Body Shop products when I couldn't easily get them here. I now use Korres, a Greek brand, and I'm very happy with the products that I use. I recommend them if you see them anywhere, like in Duty Free shops.
ReplyDeleteHello Mrs Sue! I know Korres, I was lucky enough to come across a couple of unused bottles of shower gel in a charity shop last year and was very impressed. If I didn't travel with carry-on only I'd buy it when I go to Greece & bring some back but the liquid restrictions are still very tight. Lovely to hear from you! xxx
DeleteHi Vix, catch ing up on your blog from a sunbed in zanzebar, smothered in Calypso once a day factor 30 Sun lotion as blogged by you many moons ago! Its brilliant and we always get loads off Amazon. Betty
ReplyDeleteHello, Betty! I'd give anything to swap snowy walsall for the exotic beaches of Zanzibar! Calypso is the best, I'm so glad you agree. Have a brilliant time. xxx
DeleteFantastic post Vix and super comments too. I am still in love with amphora aromatics rose and frankincense face cream. 50ml in a brown glass jar costs about £8 in the health food shop. Otherwise I too am a soap and flannel girl morning and night and during the day I always use SPF 50. Currently one by Nivea but if I felt I could justify it I would choose Ultra Violette all the time. It’s an Aussie brand, smells of roses and makes my skin look amazing. I don’t wear makeup - except lately I am coming to realise the lift a good lipstick gives my psyche so I splashed out in Space NK in the summer and bought one by Lisa Eldridge called Je ne sais quoi”. Really! For me, my best beauty tip is to drink lots of tap water, eat lots of vegetables and whole grains and do something sporty every day. Sweating is better than any exfoliant and getting the blood pumping is as good as any beauty treatment. I end every day (no matter what time it is) with a soak in an Epsom’s salts bath with a few drops of an essential oil as that relaxes me and sets me up for a good night’s sleep. And stress is definitely the worst thing ever. I’m caring for my husband who has Parkinson’s and the neurologist during a phone consultation said said yesterday that the Parkinson’s patient comes in looking as fit as a fiddle while the partner and carer looks as if they should be on a stretcher! That made me laugh and I am so trying to channel my darling dad who cared for my mum for four years and always with a smile on his face. You remain an inspiration to live a fulfilling life no matter what is going on in the background. Thank you Vix. Sarah x
ReplyDeleteHello Sarah! Thanks so much for the kind words and your wonderful comment. Amphora Aromatics are excellent, I used their essential oils and organic coconut oil to make my own facial oil, and was impressed with both their service and the quality of their products. I like the sound of their face cream, all the more so for the glass packaging. I've just looked at the LE lipstick, the colour is gorgeous. Lipstick makes such a difference.
DeleteYou're so right about the diet and exercise, I think strenuous activity is the best beauty treatment, both the sweating and the rush of endorphins.
It is so stressful being a carer and its vital that you look after yourself although I know that's far easier said than done. Much love to you. xxx
Hello Vix! Hope you've been doing well! You look so gorgeous, I love your makeup and the contrast between that green top (my fav. shade of green). I had read your post two days ago or so but got busy and forgot to leave my comment so, here I am now. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the pictures, specially the sponge I wondered if that was the one you got from your recent 'summer' trip (as I had also read those posts btw, just became a silent reader back then) and as I kept on reading found out it was indeed, haha. To be honest, I've never heard of any of these brands before, I don't think it's something you'd find here in Colombia, except for the Philosophy shower gels which I've seen either on Pinterest or TikTok and the Cutex nail polish remover, I'm pretty sure my mother bought that one years ago, maybe? Can't remember but looks familiar and if it's the one I think it was, it was really a good one!
I haven't discovered any new prudcts, I'm a simple girl and don't have that much of a routine, for me is water, gel douche (body) and cleansing (face) both from Bioderma 'cause skin problems, I do use a body oil that has karite, cacao, almond and argan after shower, specially post-shaving and it's from a natural ingredients brand and my most recent purchase was a Victoria's Secret fragrance mist I've been obsessed with. Haha! :)
Have a lovely day and rest of the week! xx
Hello Melissa! Long time so speak, it's lovely to hear from you!
DeleteThose natural sponges are fantastic, the more dense ones are supposed to be really good for improving troublesome complexions and they last 3 - 5 years so a worthy investment if you come across them.
Cutex is a really old brand, I've just Googled it and it's been around since 1911! I've always used their nail polish remover but I think that formulation is new, it's amazing! I like the sound of your body lotion. There was a Victoria's Secret perfume a charity shop the other day, it was still sealed so I couldn't tell what the fragrance was like so I left it for someone else to buy! Thanks for commenting! xxx
I love your beauty routine posts! I use the same eye makeup remover. I have horribly sensitive eyes and it's one of the few that doesn't irritate me. I also use cutex nail varnish remover but the nourishing one. I jabe reusable remover pads I bought from Etsy. Xxx
ReplyDeleteHello Louise! I've never found a better eye make-up remover than the Nivea one, I love it. I used to use another of the Cutex nail polish removers but I liked the sound of one that would even remove glitter, it's so good! xxx
DeleteI've never heard of this brand but it sounds promising! Thanks for the introduction Vix!
ReplyDeleteHelo Pilar and thank you! x
DeleteHi vix
ReplyDeleteMy name is Melanie and I also live in Walsall. I often read your lovely blog 💖😘
There is another one of those shops, owned by the same people, still open in the square in Aldridge, opposite home bargains.
They tend to sell the same things, although I haven't been for a while... I already have too much.
Hope this is useful for you xx
Melanie, you're a lifesaver! I know where I'll be heading this week! Thanks so much. xxx
DeleteI haven't tried any of these products Vix, but loved reading about them. I love washing my face with Dove soap and then putting a facial oil on at night, such as an organic rosehip oil. They're not to expensive here in Australia.
ReplyDeleteFace oils are the way to go, they last for ages and are great value for money. I bet your rosehip oil smells gorgeous. xxx
DeleteI believe everyone needs to find what works for them when it comes to skincare, and you have certainly found what works for you.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is anything wrong in investing in high end skin care for those individuals that are into that, but I have personally always been too lazy to do my research and also to save up for that. Life is expensive. I have also probably been overexposing myself to sun all my life. I did get better with wearing sun cream, and now I do put it on my face daily. ...but I don't run away from the sun. I need my vitamin D.
Also, life is unpredictable. We shouldn't stress too much about our skin. Sometimes there are factors we cannot control.
What I'm surprised when I look into the mirror is that I don't really see any traces of all the health problems that have plagued me. So, I guess that a simile skincare routine works for me as well: a gentle wash, some sun cream, and occasional face massages with essential oils. Nothing I need to overthink or stress about.
Absolutely, Ivana! If people want to spend a lot of money on skincare that's entirely their choice as long as they're aware than nothing sold off the shelf will make a radical difference to their skin and they're not buying into false promises made by beauty companies and celebs/influencers paid to promote their products.
DeleteI'm lazy, too. I tend to stick to the same things unless I can't find them on the shelf. xxx
Hola Vix, el 90% de las veces leo y no escribo, amo tu blog y nunca me pierdo. Las rutinas de belleza me interesan desde siempre, gracias por compartir.
