My Week - Buying, Reading, Making & Raising The Roof

Hello! How's your week been? Here's a bit of what we've been up to.

Last Saturday morning Liz's husband* Al needed some assistance with his self-build garage project so we drove over to theirs. While he, Jon and five of his friends raised the roof, Liz and I provided the breakfast sandwiches and the never-ending cups of tea.

*It still seems really weird to have friends with husbands, it sounds so grown-up and sensible!

I also gave Liz a lesson on selling on Vinted, did some sewing, popped down to the charity shop in the village where I found Liz a fabulous pair of suede ankle boots for £4, bumped into an old drinking/quizzing buddy I'd not seen in years and visited Liz's mum Hazel who's currently recovering from a hip replacement, before joining the lads in the pub for a celebratory pint.

On the subject of pubs, it's been so cold this week that, in addition to our post swim breakfast in Wetherspoons Walsall , we've visited a couple of other branches for their excellent £1.04 endless cups of coffee to warm us up between charity shops. Not that we ever have more than one cup, we'd be swinging off the chandeliers!

Above is The Avion, Aldridge, a converted Art Deco cinema.

Today it's been the turn of the Arthur Robinson in Perry Barr, named after The Birchfield Harriers' first Olympian and medal winner, who took part in the London Games in 1908. Let's just take a moment to admire the fabulous carpet, a swirly Art Nouveau-inspired beauty. Doesn't it match my dress & cowboy boots well?

And talking of charity shoppings, here's this week's finds for Kinky Melon's Vinted page or for next Summer's festivals.

Crickit, Hamburg "Paloma" Chelsea boots (currently retailing at €185) & 2 pairs of Adidas trainers.

Vintage 1980s Cherry Red Docs, Hagar the Horrible tie & 1980s Kangol hip-hop beret.

Vintage 1980s Avant Garde novelty jumper, vintage 1980s acid wash embroidered Jazzino denim jacket & 1970s chiffon maxi dress.

1980s black leather biker jacket, WD:NY faux patent mac & green leather moto jacket

West African waxed cotton blazer, Indian-made cotton kimono & British Wool cable knit cardi

West African waxed cotton leisure shirt, Levis distressed denim jacket, vintage 1970s Dunn & Co tweed & corduroy jacket.

Pied a Terre, handmade in Spain, conker brown ankle boots and assorted vintage vinyl for the collection.

I've sold forty-seven items from my wardrobe on Vinted over the last month so it was high time I topped up my empty looking rails before I got accused of being a minimalist (ha!). I couldn't resist snaffling this dress from Vinted. It might look like a vintage Afghan dress but it originated from Urban Outfitters! It's a shop that's always worth investigating, it's not all retro 1990s gear for twenty-something hipsters.

I'm wearing my new-to-me midi with my plum fedora (retail buy, 2016), leather cowboy boots, vintage Moroccan bag and some turquoise beads I had custom-made in Rhodes Town a few years ago.

I've been so preoccupied with Vinted listings that I've not had time to pose for more than two outfit photos, here's the other one, worn on Wednesday, consisting of a 1960s hand-embroidered Indian cotton midi dress, a 50p Art Nouveau belt and my vintage Afghan coat (so many companies are doing repro versions of these lately, even M&S! Sorry, but nothing beats a proper vintage one).

I've done a bit more sewing this week, despite someone deciding that my sewing box would be put to better use as a bed. Cats are such idiots sometimes!

I don't know what attracted me to these curtains more, the groovy print, the £5 price tag or the amazing tag inside...Warwick Hospital Nurses Dorm.... along with a DHSS fire resistant information label. The Department of Health and Social Security was rebranded as The Department for Work & Pensions in 1988 so being at least 36 years old we can safely say that they're vintage.

And this is what I made, a midi length waistcoat using the same vintage pattern I used to make my Morris & Co. maxi waistcoat a fortnight ago.

And I couldn't not include that cute tag, it's a piece of social history!

Although I update the books I've read in my blog sidebar, I've not mentioned what I've been reading for ages. Dave, one of my swimming friends, lent me these two books earlier in the week. I'm currently halfway through Siddhartha and have set a few hours aside for Ravi Shankar tomorrow. I was a bit scared of starting Hermann Hesse's 1922 masterpiece but it's a really enjoyable and enlightening read. I never finish books I don't enjoy - life's too short for boring books.

I'm already excited about Gladiator II which we're planning on seeing at the cinema next week. I might have to rewatch Gladiator for the billionth time this weekend!

Have a good 'un!

  1. Hi Vix, nice to meet you! Thank you so much for your comment! I've really enjoyed getting to know your blog and I've just come across such a post, wow, so much information! I liked your vintage looks, I liked the first one the most! I also love art deco! My mum also sews and I learnt from her, I love doing sewing projects!
I wish you a great weekend! Hugs

  2. One cup of coffee? I've been known to drink a lot, so best I stay away from a bottomless opportunity. One of my retirement goals is both finding a good swim spot, and wandering around second had stores to refresh my wardrobe with good finds.

    1. Oh yes, only one cup a day. Back when I was in India for weeks, I could go months without a coffee, I'm a typical Brit, tea is best! xxx

  3. The pink dress looks beautiful, I'm thrilled. The pattern on the carpet is also pretty.

Great purchases again. The kimono and also the brown ankle boots are awesome.

  4. Vix, I have the matching skirt to the "Jazzino" jacket you found! Wearing it here: https://sheilaephemera.blogspot.com/2024/06/mental-health-shop-in-pink-and-acid-wash.html - how funny is that?

I love how well you match the 'Spoons carpet - your outfits in general are so awesome. I agree - starting to see repros of the 70s leather trenchcoats but the quality is off. Only the originals!

William looks very happy on "his" new bed, hee hee.

I love that curtain fabric, and especially that you retained the label on your new midi waistcoat!
Have a lovely weekend, Vix, Jon and William! Way to raise the roof!

    1. I can't believe we've got the matching set! How crazy is that?
You know when you belong somewhere when you match the soft furnishings!
I've seen the modern leather trench coats and you're right, they're not right, far better to wait until you van find the real thing than compromise on repro. That way you'll love it forever.
William is a crazy boy, at the moment he's sprawled across the settee and looks about 5 foot long. xxx

    1. Thank you! We love Mark Rylance, too. I adored Wolf Hall, The Mirror and the Light and Bringing up the Bodies so having him play Thomas Cromwell is an absolute joy. Funnily enough we watched an odd British folk horror called Inland last night, it wasn't great but Mark Rylance saved it from being dreadful! xxx

  7. Al's self-build garage looks quite impressive, I'm sure he needed all the help he could get raising that roof!
Your Urban Outfitters dress is fabulous, it actually looks like the real thing! We've got one of their shops here in Antwerp, but I don't think I ever put a foot inside.
Loving the 'Spoons carpet and as for that groovy print curtain, that fabric was just asking for you to create something spectacular with it. I love that you included that label! xxx

    1. Liz and I were amazed at how quickly and quietly they got that roof up, we were expecting swearing and lots of injuries!
Urban Outfitters is definitely worth a look, you might be surprised at what they sall (Barry M makeup, vintage clothes , cool coffee table books and some amazing footwear!) xxx

  8. That looks like a good 'roof raising' and a very traditional one at that. Nope, we could NEVER accuse you of being a minimalist, even if you did manage to sell 47 items. :-)

Oh William does look quite precarious on his new vantage point, thank goodness he's a cat.

    1. Liz and I pondered on wearing bonnets, switching off the electrics and being Amish wives for the day what with all that roof raising!
William can squeeze himself into the tiniest of spaces, I could put a postage stamp on the kitchen table and he'd find a way of sitting on it! xxx

  9. Great work on the garage!
I didn't realise Urban Outfitters was capable of producing such loveliness. That dress really does look vintage!
Loving the 'Spoons carpet and your latest gorgeous creation. Those layering waistcoats will come in very handy through the winter months! xxx

    1. They did a cracking job, didn't they?
I bought a gorgeous Indian block printed blouse from UO last year, it was on their sale rail for a tenner. Nikki and I always have a browse when we're in Birmingham if only to see what the cool kids are wearing!
Those waistcoats being double curtain thickness are surprisingly warm. I'm eyeing up a vintage velvet curtain for my next project! xxx

  12. Our neighbours are having their house roof replaced, and I've been amazed how quickly it's all going, especially as they had to put up a load of scaffolding. Liz and Al's is looking fab.
I'm so happy Kinky is on Vinted. Although you've given brilliant eBay tips in the past, I'm not keen on the auction format. But even better is the Inpost delivery with Vinted. No more worrying about missing the postman! Xxx

    1. Liz and I were astounded at how quickly the managed to get that roof up, we were expecting them to manage about a third of it and it was done in a day.
I'm not a fan on the auction format either, it's too easy to get carried away with bidding or just forget all about it. I love the Inpost lockers, it means I can walk down to Lidl and drop my parcels off rather than relying on Jon to get the car out and drive to the post office. xxx

  13. OOOH to the Urban Outfitters frock! Much as I like going into young hipster stores and distubing the demographic, I've never been tempted to go beyond the ground floor in UO lol. Absolutely loving the curtain couture and that lovely fabric behind the book photie (and the Spoons carpet!). I'm trying to limit my online time as it is making me anxious and angry in equal parts at the mo. I don't think I've used/thought the word hate so much as in the last few months - so time for a bit of a break. I'm just browsing here, a few of my art bookmarks and some favourite eBayers - I can't bear much else (how very melodramatic that sounds! ). Hoping you've got your winter break sorted or are deep in planning your escape!
Kisses to William - Elaine Anon (who needs to get the paints out) xx

    1. Forgot to add I'm enjoying https://bsky.app/ (I left Twiiter before it became X - loved the art community there before the general vibe of the app became so poisonous). The blocking features are great on bluesky - just as well as the occasional feckwit is now showing up with the usual feckwittage.

    2. Always lovely to hear from you, Elaine! That made me laugh about you visiting hipster stores and disturbing the demographic. I once set foot in a branch of New Look, the assistants were agog, one asked if she could try my coat on and another said I was too cool to be in their shop!
Isn't that Spoon's carpet divine? The fabric behind the books is a kantha bedcover, there's a haberdashery stall in the indoor market and the lovely family are forever tempting me with stuff - on that occasion I'd popped in for a metre of elastic and some thread and came out with that bedcover (at £20 I couldn't say no!)
I know what you mean about the vileness, misogyny and general bigotry on social media, thanks so much for the link to bsky, I'd never heard of it before but had a joyful 40 minutes tittering at some of the daftness! xxx

    1. Hello Jules, Wetherspoons coffee is great value, isn't it? I love that it's ethically produced by Lavazza, too! You can't beat a Spoons' breakfast, I think that's the main reason why Jon comes swimming with me! xxx

  15. Lovely outfits and fabulous finds! I can't believe the nurses at Warwick hospital slept in dorms - how very Victorian! I did my nurse training from 1972 to 1975 (took maternity leave in the middle which is why it took 4 years rather than 3) but we had individual rooms I'm glad to say! I love the waistcoat you made with the curtains and it's brilliant you retained the label. Your friends garage looks absolutely enormous...

    1. I was surprised about the dorms, it sounds like something from a Carry On film, you can imagine Sid James chasing the nurses around the beds in a lascivious manner! Your individual rooms sound a lot more civilised!
Liz is hoping there'll be a mezzanine floor in the garage for her to squeeze some of her art stuff into! xxx

  16. oh yes, totally agree that having friends with husbands sounds terribly grown-up and sensible. We attended a friend's son wedding a few months ago and I'm still recovering of the shock of being in the 'mom's friends group' (even if we were the funniest people!).
It's amazing that you helped to build a garage (so pro!), your comment on becoming Amish wives made me laugh!.
That waistcoat you made is a work of art, love that you kept the label (and the story/history that it tells us). Curtain couture is Fab!
And I'm admiring your Urban Outfitters dress, what a lovely piece, totally fab colours!. You look gorgeous in your afghan coat and cute dress, totally agree that most repro pieces are really dissapointing, so much better to look for the fabulousness of the Real Thing! (even if I'm not a fundamentalist!, sometimes repro is good enough!)

  17. Siddhartha is one of my favourite novels for sure. I read it a couple of times, and I always come back to it. There is supposedly a wonderful Indian movie based on it. I saw a trailer on Youtube and it looked very promising.
