Hazy Shade of Winter

Hello! Thanks so much for the brilliant comments you left on my last post (HERE) and for those of you kind enough to share their current beauty favourites and finds. I've got a list of products to look out for once I've reached the end of my current stash.

So what have we been up to this week?

The Vinted listings continue. I'm gradually working my way through the Kinky Shed, photographing and uploading the stock and this week it's been mostly about coats, jumpers and blingy stuff.

The weather's been all over the place this week. We'd not even needed coats when we popped out on Sunday to drop off the Vinted sales parcels at the Inpost lockers.

If you read last Friday's post you might have clocked these vintage cherry red Docs we found in a charity shop. Bought with the stockroom in mind, Jon made the fatal error of trying them on and the rest, as they say, is history. Back in the 1980s DM shoes were de rigueur for us Indie kids and were always worn with Argyle socks. Jon only had one pair in his sock drawer but we managed to find seven brand new pairs in the charity shops this week so he's properly kitted out now.

In the same chazza he also spotted this Duffer of St George wool scarf which he soon snaffled.

Meanwhile I wore the midi waistcoat I'd made from the charity shopped Warwick Hospital Nurses Dorm curtains along with the fedora I'd adorned with hatband made with fabric left over from my Golden Lily project (HERE).

I found the vintage woven cotton maxi skirt with a quilted waistband on Vinted for an incredible £4 the other day (I'm wearing it with my curtain waistcoat in the photo above). Mohanjeet Grewal, a Punjabi-born journalist turned designer, opened her first boutique in Paris in 1962 and was renowned for creating the "mini Sari" in 1967, combining Indian culture with Western fashion. Her clients & friends included Jane Fonda, Jackie Kennedy, Catherine Deneuve, Jean Seberg and Yves St Laurent, I'm in good company!

On Monday the weather turned Baltic and it was Afghans and sheepskin hats at dawn. Despite the below average temperatures it was lovely to see the sun again, the skies had been depressingly grey for weeks. The local weather forecast had mentioned the possibility of snow but I remained sceptical until I opened the curtains at 6am on Tuesday morning and saw it with my own eyes. It didn't stop us from walking down to the baths and back for our twice-weekly swim.

Strength & Honour! On Tuesday afternoon we met up with Liz & Al at Walsall's lovely indie cinema, The Light, to watch Gladiator II and it was well worth the 23 year wait. After the film we treated ourselves to a couple of bottles of Spanish red along with artisan pizzas, handmade on the premises and, on a Tuesday, it's two pizzas for £15...bargain!

Liz and I were mesmerised by Connie Nielsen, possibly even more beautiful now at 59 than she was 23 years ago. We've both decided we need more gold jewellery in our lives, too!

Forget those muscle-bound gladiators, it was Swedish actor Alexander Karim who played Ravi, the Benares-born doctor, who made us weak at the knees. My fellow Scandi Noir fans may recognise him as Frank Nordling from Advokaten.

On Wednesday we woke up to yet more snow. We layered up and went charity shopping in our favourite Black Country town. I did wear my Afghan coat but took it off to show you my new-to-me dress, a vintage Indian cotton block printed beauty.

I don't look for these dresses - honest - they just keep popping up in Recommended for You on my Vinted feed. I can't find anything out about Geeta Enterprises- there's a shop in Delhi with the same name but it sells tech so obviously has no connection to the export agent where this would have hailed.

I did find a twin which sold on Etsy recently for £195. Mine was £30!

There weren't many people out and about yesterday so we did well in the charity shops, I'll photograph and share the stock finds when the weather's more conducive to outdoor photos. In the meantime feast your eyes on these gorgeous bone china mugs, still in their original box and bearing the Pre-Raphaelite artist, John William Waterhouse's glorious Hylas and the Nymphs (1898) & The Awakening of Adonis (1899) which I found on the bric-a-brac shelves in the Beacon Centre for the Blind for £6I bet they'll make my Yorkshire Tea taste even better than it usually does.

Anyone who knows me will be shocked by this - it's a jumper! Something I never wear. It's 1990s Miss Selfridge, made in the UK and it had been in the Hospice shop for weeks, I think I just felt sorry for it.

It was -4°C when we left the house to walk down to the swimming baths this morning and it proved very useful (yeah, I know that's nothing to what some of my readers endure but to us Brits, that's cold!) It's like a military operation to get all my layers into the changing room lockers and I managed to cram this, along with my sheepskin gilet, bastard massive hat, maxi dress, underskirt, leggings, scarf, wristwarmers, boots, two pairs of socks and my bag with room to spare (just about!)

Although I say I went swimming, I probably did more chatting than exercise today although trudging through the ice and snow into town and back this morning was a workout in itself.

Thanks for reading, stay warm and see you soon!

  2. Ha, had to get that in as no.1 comment!!!
I'm SHOCKED at that jumper. It's so not your usual but in your usual inimitable style, you've rocked it- goes so nicely with the skirt/dress and gilet!
The f***off big sleeves on that orange dress are flipping amazing!
Also, that Geeta dress is super!
    The mugs are good too.
I want some cherry red docs too please!

    1. I know, it's a jumper and it's in neutral colours! I was just going to keep it for wearing in the house but couldn't resist giving it a try with one of my block printed dresses and that fluffy gilet, it's a lot easier to cram in the locker rather than a coat!
That's the great thing about waistcoats, you can get bastard massive sleeves underneath them.
Cherry red are the ultimate colour for Docs, aren't they? Proper alternative! xxx

  3. -12 and snowing. Not cold enough for the duvet coat. So I dug out the full length black, wool Eddie Bauer duffel coat. Jut the thing to wear to take a blonde dog to the dogtors, lol.

I'm keeping the purple, wool, fur trimmed Russian coat for a trip to the supermarket.

    I live the wildlife.

    1. -12!! I'd have thought that was too cold for snow! I've heard dog hair's all the rage! I hope the vet visit went well.
Loving the sound of that coat! xxx

  4. It's obviously fatal trying on your stock. Very occasionally I volunteer with a charity by sorting old clothes for recycling and selling on. Every time I've come back with something. I haven't been for about three years, but I'm restarting this Sunday and am not planning on bringing anything home. Wish me luck!! Arilx

    1. It's terrible trying something on for size, it really is!
I remember how much stuff I used to rescue from the rag bag in my days of being a charity shop volunteer, you'd have to have a cast iron resolve not to! Good luck! xxx

  5. The photos in the snow are enchanting. Snow at your feet looks good on you. :D
This year you had snow before us Austrians. It could be a premiere.
The cups for your tea were a very lucky find.

    1. It is very early for us to have snow, we're more likely to get it in March or April than November. We had more last evening but it's starting to rain now so it should be gone before too long!
Those tea cups are so pretty! xxx

We had to hold each other up walking to and from town yesterday, I'm hoping this rain will wash last night's snow away before we go out! Lovely to hear from you! xxx

  7. Love the jumper, beige is classic... as long as it's not elasticated lol. I haven't got to grips with Vinted yet, must try harder. Betty x

    1. I think that jumper was inspired by you, Betty. I know you've got something similar! Elasticated and beige is definitely a step too far.
Once you've got your head around Vinted you'll soon be addicted! Xxx

  8. You look a regular snow maiden in the last photo. Doesn't Lord Jon look so cool in his outfit? Really fab photos. I bought a wonderful dress, which I am wearing over leggings and a thermal jumper, in a charity shop last week no label of who made it but it's 100% recycled cotton and made in India, the cotton is very thick and a really lovely pattern, it washes well too just needs a hot iron. It cost £5 a win win in my book. Hylas and The Nymphs used to hang on my bedroom window wall back in the 70s it was an Athena block print. I loved it. Great post thank you, hope you stay warm. 1. Hello Sue and thank you! I'm liking the sound of your Indian cotton dress and how you've worn it. What a find that was and a complete bargain to boot.
I loved the Athena block prints, I had JW Waterhouse's Lady of Shallot on my teenage wall. Have a lovely weekend. xxx

  9. I love the colours in your new Indian cotton dress!
I'm also leaning a little into gold. How funny! I inherited some gold jewellery from my mother in law. Most of it isn't really my style, but gold does add a certain glamour to an outfit.
I had to laugh at the first comment on your post...my thoughts exactly. That said, I think it's not always the colour, it's what you do with it and you've styled that jumper beautifully! xxx

    1. Thanks, Claire! Those blues and reds really pop, don't they?
I'd walked away from that jumper a couple of weeks ago, I didn't intend to wear it out and about but it sort of works!
How funny about you starting to see gold in a new light, too. I think it was Denzil Washington's jewellery in Gladiator II I wanted the most, the film's worth seeing just for the bling! xxx

  10. So, so colourful as usual ... and then beige, but somehow you rock even that. Good find on the DMs for Jon and then the perfect accompanying socks. You do seem to have the magic charity shop touch when you need something. I had to laugh at the thought of all your many layers crammed into your swimming locker, it's a good job those hats are so squishable.

    1. Thanks so much, Sue! I even manage to find things in charity shops I don't really need, too - i'm not sure if its a gift or an addiction!
It's like something from The Krypton Factor (showing my age there!) trying to cram everything into the locker, it was a nightmare on Tuesday trying to keep the clothes soggy with falling snow from the dry stuff! xxx

  11. I love the jumper, but it's definitely a new style for you! And I love the Geeta dress, but again, you don't usually wear red. They both look completely fabulous though, so it definitely proves it's good to keep an open mind with clothes ❤️
Rain and flooding up next apparently. Oh joy!

    1. Thanks, Annie! I bet I wouldn't have looked twice at that jumper on a warmer day! I was sorting my wardrobe out the other day and realised I'd got quite a bit of red, I must drag it out and wear it, it feels good to wear it!
Storm Bert doesn't sound all that scary, I hope it isn't too scary! xxx

  12. Loving Jon's cherry red Docs, and what an amazing find your Mohanjeet maxi skirt was! Your massive sleeved blouse and curtain couture waistcoat are absolutely perfect with it. Obviously, your other outfits are fabulous too, but that first one's such a welcome ray of sunshine on a grey and miserable day.
We've been having Baltic temperatures too, but thankfully no snow to speak of.
I'm still in utter shock that you've bought a jumper, and a beige one at that. What is the world coming to :-) xxx

    1. Hello Ann! We definitely need a blast of colour this morning, it's absolutely foul out there! My obsession with orange continues, it's so hard to find. In the meantime I'll wrap myself up in a beige jumper, at least it means I don't need to switch the heating on or light the fire!
We're currently being battered with Storm Bert, William's not happy! xxx

  13. Hi Vix, I love the colour combinations and patterns on your Geeta Enterprises dress- a new label for me. I had to smile at the amazing mugs, especially 'Hylas and the Nymphs' which I have in a pack of birthday cards and send only to good friends who I know will appreciate its beauty. Finding treasures at the charity shops here is definitely getting harder and more expensive but I keep plodding on. Yesterday I was in a charity shop with a fellow devotee and friend and wearing almost head to toe second hand clothes and accessories when a lady came up to me to tell me that she loved my outfit and felt she just had to tell me. Wasn't that kind of her? I have recently encouraged another friend to buy second hand too and she is delighted with her treasures. I have also made a rare retail purchase today of a Celia Birtwell print dress in her collaboration with ' Joanie in their sale. I love her creative designs and use of colour.
Monday night was a fun evening of 'Badly Drawn Boy' and 'Squeeze' in Glasgow.

    1. Hello Alysia! How lovely to hear from you!
There's something magical about Waterhouse's art and I don't blame you for only sending those birthday cards to special friends, it's exactly what I'd do, too!
I was very pleased when that dress popped up on my feed, I love discovering different vintage labels that might be on anyone else's radar.
That was lovely of that lady to compliment you on your appearance, it's such a kind thing for a stranger to do and makes such an impact. I'm delighted that you're spreading the secondhand message.
One of my friends is a fan of Joanie clothing, I loved the Laura Ashley collaboration but my size sold out immediately and am hoping one of the dresses will turn up second hand. It's good to make the occasional new purchase, we're ensuring that there will be stylish secondhand clothes for the next generation - we're performing a service really!
What fantastic gigs, you lucky girl. I've seen Squeeze a few times and love them, Damon Gough's got such a lovely voice, too! xxx

  15. Hello,
I really like the way you do your posts, it almost looks like the looks of the week! I loved all the looks, they are colorful just the way I like them. You have your own, very ethnographic style, I would say! They are excellent purchases, cheap and on top of that you help charities! I'm Portuguese and I have new neighbors, they are English and very friendly, they came to Portugal because the climate is warmer!!

    Happy weekend!

  17. So many fabulous outfits. I always love your maxis and the sheepskin hats. They look so cozy. Here it has gotten colder as well, and my work place can get pretty cold. My house is so warm compared to my work place. I wish I could work from home.
We don't have snow yet, but it's visible on the surrounding hills and mountains, and I'd love to visit them. I'm not sure will I have the time.
I didn't enjoy Gladiator II that much, because the writing felt lazy, but I was absolutely mesmerized by Connie Nelson. Not only is she more beautiful than ever, but her acting is so amazing! We do need more gold jewellery in our life:). She looked amazing in that movie!

    1. Hello Ivana! Thanks so much. I'm sorry about your workplace being so cold, that must take some enjoyment out of job.
I think Ridley Scott would have been hard pressed to surpass the masterpiece that was the original Gladiator, which we watched again last night, but I did enjoy the sequel. Connie Nielsen was mesmerising, if anything she's got even more beautiful, hasn't she?
Bring on the bling! I reckon gold will be the in thing in the coming months! Xx
