Here's what we wore on Saturday night for our friends' daughter's 1990s themed 30th Birthday party.
Jon recaptured his rave days in black denim dungarees, a bucket hat, Vans Hi-Tops, a baggy tee shirt and some Sick Eye shades along with the obligatory dummy and some stick-on smiley faces - which he doled out to the party goers - E's for grown-ups!
I went for a Cheong-san (as worn by Madonna, Kate Moss and Ginger Spice), silver platforms, bug eye spex, a 1990s magazine clutch and a Gwen Stefani Lamb bangle. My Space Buns were adorned with some vintage diamonte hair grips.
I took absolutely no photos when we were there but had a tremendous time and loved catching up with friends and our Glasto family.
Madonna, 1996
Despite the birthday girl plying us with some rather deadly cinnamon whisky, our cheese on toast breakfast soon sorted us out. We did give the usual Sunday morning charity shop trip a miss but I had to pop out to deposit more of my Vinted sales in the parcel lockers at Lidl.
This Naked Generation dress, cowboy boots, fedora, Moroccan kilim bag and gilet all frequently pop up on my blog, although it's the first time I've worn them together, and there's a subtle update....
William Morris's original Kennet design was a lot more muted than the colours on this Morris & Co. gilet so I dyed it with Dylon's Sandy Beige. It's toned down the rather harsh looking pink and white (the images to the left of the collage) and works with the natural dyes of my Indian block printed dresses a lot better. I think William would approve (that's the legendary Arts & Crafts designer, not our cat!)
Monday was a charity shopping morning and as it wasn't raining I thought I'd give my new-to-me heavy cotton maxi skirt an outing (hems and puddles aren't good). It's a 1970s wraparound, hand woven in Greece and in reality, the design is metallic gold, although it looks brown captured in our gloomy jungle garden.
In the past I've sold midi length versions of this skirt in white/brown and white/blue but it's the first maxi length one I've come across and was a Vinted bargain at £7.
Today (Tuesday) has been a swimming, 'Spoons and charity shopping morning. You've seen the waistcoat, hat and boots before but the dress is new.
It's one of those Indian Art Silk dresses which is just a fancy way of describing Polyester. I'd only visited Mr Singh's haberdashery stall for bias binding and thread but ended up having my arm twisted by his lovely daughter and buying this dress for a tenner. It rolls down to nothing & doesn't crease, making it perfect for chucking in the locker at the swimming baths.
I've fallen out of the habit of photographing our Kinky Melon stock finds so, until I can get my act together, here's the latest things I've found for me.
1. A sealed Stila Lip Vinyl in Supercharge (Age UK, 99p) which I'm wearing in today's (Tuesday) outfit photo and despite it being a bit messy, absolutely love the colour & glossiness.
2. A pair of cream lace-covered Vans. I rarely wear trainers but at £2.95 (via Sue Ryder) they were too pretty to leave behind.
3. A Lara Ethnics "Santa Fe" maxi (Cancer UK, £3). Lara Ethnics is a boho-inspired French label which ethically manufactures in India and Bali. This dress currently retails at €75 and can be worn as a halter or with shoulder straps & has tassel ties at the back than can be wrapped around the waist or left loose. I'm thinking it'll be a useful dress to take on holiday with me, I do love a halterneck and being synthetic is crease-free and lightweight, perfect for packing in a carry-on.
As always there's a pile of secondhand books to keep me quiet (Cancer UK, Age UK, BHF). I'm three-quarters of the way through We That Are Young, a retelling of King Lear set in modern day India. It's a whopper of a book and a riveting, eye-gouging read!
The look of love! No wonder he's a chonk, who can resist a face like that?

I'm off to Birmingham with a girlfriend tomorrow as there's a new Pre-Raphaelite exhibition currently running in the city. I'd better wash my hair and attempt to emulate one of those long-haired beauties in the paintings, I went a bit mad with the hairspray on Saturday night and it feels more like wire wool than hair!
See you soon. x
Hiya! What’s your Vinted name please?
ReplyDeleteHello! It's vix1966. xxx
DeleteYou look like Florence Welch in the last pic! She was phenomenal on Saturday night at the Proms! If she ever starts a cult, I'm in! You look amazing in your Suzi Wong dress!xxx
ReplyDeleteI'll be next in line if Florence ever starts a cult, seen her twice and she is an absolute goddess! That's a massive compliment! X
DeleteI'm not anonymous! It's me!Dunno how that happened!
DeleteOh hello! I'm sorry, I've not messaged you back yet, promise to do that before end of tomorrow! xxx
DeleteSweet William. I think Little Miss will get too many treats as she has such an alluring beg. I recall the Madonna dress- yours is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteThese cats of ours know how to wind us round their pretty little paws, don't they? xxx
DeleteJon's outfit looks great, cool photo. You are a sensation in the Cheong-san!
ReplyDeleteCinnamon whiskey sounds sooooo good, I'll have to see how I get one.
Thanks so much! that whisky was gorgeous, I'm not usually a fan but the cinnamon flavour was so tasty! xxx
DeleteWhat a fab idea to have themed parties - I've never been to one - sadly. You and Jon looked fabulous and all your outfits were gorgeous. The dye on the gilet looks brilliant and I really, really like the new maxi skirt. Loved your charity shop finds. I've just finished the Richard Osman book - it took me ages to track a copy in the chazzas but picked it up in Barnstaple at the weekend when I went to visit Hilary. William is lovely; I sometime read about the exploits of a very superior cat called 'Milo the Chonk' on IG. He's hilarious but not as pretty as William!
ReplyDeletexxx
I was a bit lost as to what to wear at first! I forgot how varied 1990s fashion was from rave, the 1970s revival, Grunge, Brit Pop, Friends and films like Fight Club and Bram Stoker's Dracula, we were spoilt for choice!
DeleteI was beginning to think that I'd never find a copy of Richard's book. I love his writing style, I'm usually crying with laughter.
I've just looked up Milo the Chonk, he's gorgeous (but yes, William's better! ) xxx
Jon killed the nineties rave look!
ReplyDeleteYou wear your nineties look fabulously. I really like the space buns. That's a lovely 90ties take on a traditional dress as well.
But you look the best in your iconic maxi outfits with your hair down. I'm sure you'll fit in with long hair beauties at any pre Raphaelities painting exhibition!
Thanks, Ivana. I'll tell Jon! Oh yes, I'm much more comfortable with long flowing locks and voluminous dresses rather than satin and Space Buns! xxx
DeleteWell, Mr Singh's daughter did you well- love the sleeves on that dress! Your hair is incredible!
ReplyDeleteI love your new Greek maxi skirt! Looks really pretty on.
William is a happy Chonk! He's rewarding you for your kindness and diligence!
You look super in the Cheongsam and I KNEW you'd do Spacebuns!x
Thanks, Kezzie! I was surprised at how good that Art Silk dress looked on, much better than on the hanger!
DeleteWilliam is a happy boy, he'd polished off two sachets of Felix by 7.30am this morning. xxx
You both nailed the 90s looks. If you were drinking Fireball, or the UK version of it, you're hardcore! That stuff can do some serious damage before you know it.
ReplyDeleteI bet Fireball was the US equivalent of Mad Dog 20/20. We tried to track some down to give to the birthday girl along with a vintage copy of The Face from October 1994 but couldn't find it! xxx
DeleteYou both looked fabulous in your 90's outfits, and it sounds like you had a fun night.
ReplyDeleteI thought of you, while I was swimming yesterday. I'm up to a mile now, which I'm trying to get my head around, as I much prefer dealing in kilometres :) Xx
Thanks, Jules! You're doing brilliantly with your fitness regime, running, cycling and swimming...impressive! xxx
DeleteThe dye job on the waistcoat worked a treat! Maeve xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Maeve! xxx
DeleteYou both nailed the nineties! Sounds like a fun party!
ReplyDeleteVery clever of you to dye the waistcoat - it's worked a treat!
Loving your new finds and that vintage maxi skirt is gorgeous! xxx
Thanks so much, Claire! xxx
DeleteBe still my heart another Pre-Raphaelite exhibition how wonderful. You will look the part I am sure. Love your party look and Lord Jon's too. Super new dress and charity shop finds. You are a legend with your finds. William is so gorgeous what a boy. Regards Sue H
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Sue! the Pre-Raphaelite exhibition was wonderful, I'm still sighing over it three days later! xxx
Deletewow, you nailed that 90's vibe in a really funny style, it sounds like a great partytime!.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to dye that gilet so it goes better with your block printed dresses, and you're looking fab in them!. love that golden maxi skirt, so cool!. And I'm also glad that you finally surrendered to your haberdasher's daughter and bought that cute dress, its sleeves are fab and it's great to have an unwrinkable dress.
Glad to see Handsome William rocking!
besos
Thanks, Monica! It was a fantastic party and very 1990s - I don't think I saw anyone using a mobile phone all night! xxx
DeleteYou both did brilliantly with your 90s style , love your space buns.
ReplyDeleteThe vest turned out so well and does look better with the more subtle tones and works so well with your more natural tones. The Greek maxi is a stunner and the daughter did well that dress is so you.
Thanks so much, Jill! xxx
DeleteCan I go back please!! To the 90’s that is, I was an alternative kid pwei and carter USM I totally loved. My baggy skater jeans oh and maxi skirts with band t shirts. Kangaroos and original docs I loved them. And toby t shirts do you remember those.
ReplyDeleteI think that’s why I loved working in harajuku as a lot of style still radiates back to the 90’s Y2K. The kids wear a lot of workwear dickies and Japanese carpenter pants, vintage t shirts from the US. I do. The only I can’t wear heels no matter how I try. Trainers and boots yeah . Heels nope! And I like to wear a short kimono to work sometimes.
I was a Grebo kid, too - that was the 1980s rather than the 1990s - I['ve lost count with how many times I saw the Wonder Stuff and PWEI! The kids are all into 1990s now, I love going in Urban Outfitters, it's such a time warp! xxx
DeleteExcellent '90's dress up✨really fun! Yeah, remember all the hairspray?! ughhh
ReplyDeleteI so love that long skirt, with the black top-what a beauty💕also the gilet. also the word gilet which is so much nicer than 'long vest' which is how I would've described them before😂
Happy Thursday🌟
Hello Stephanie! I've not worn hairspray for decades, it's got such a horrible smell. I managed to create my 1990s look with things I already had lying around the house, the hairspray was the only thing I had to buy, it'll probably be gathering dust on the dressing table for the next 30 years! Gilet sounds very French, doesn't it? xxx
DeleteSo impressed with both your 90s outfits, Jon really went to town and looked brilliant. your Madonna dress must have turned some heads! Love the Naked Generation dress, I have a few of their pieces, they are timeless and such good quality :) Betty
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Betty! Jon was in his element with his 1990s rave look, he refuses to put those dungarees back in the shed now! Naked Generation make some gorgeous clothes, I love my couple of dresses! xxx
DeleteVix, you never age! Your cat is just lovely. Black cats are my favourite.
ReplyDeleteHello SB! How wonderful to hear from you! xxx
DeleteYour 90s outfit is absolutely gorgeous. I had one of those dresses in the 90s too. We all did, didn't we? John reminds me of Bez lol, and reminded me of my love for those rave dummies, remember the big chunky plastic ones with glitter in? They need to make a comeback! Your hair always looks amazing. I thought of you yesterday, at was at a church service in Scarborough where a lot of the art/windows/alter cloths were designed by William Morris et al. They were displaying a rather beautiful Morris alter cloth, and I meant to get a photo and message it to you, but got distracted. I'll have to pop back and get it another day. xx
ReplyDeleteThanks, Louise. When I was hunting for 1990s inspiration Madonna was my first port of call. I've got several of those dresses in the kinky Shed including a bonafide 1990s Charlotte Halton one. They're gorgeous things but doing them up with all those frog fasteners are a real pain.
DeleteJon's dummy was supposed to glow in the dark but it didn't. i do remember those glitter ones!
You must go back and take some photos of the alter cloths, I'd love to see them. xxx
Your 90s outfits are brilliant, I think I would go brain-dead if someone asked me to dress from a particular era for a party, I would have to Google it and then come and visit Kinky Melons. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat gilet looks SO much better now the colour are more subdued, much more authentic. You are going to rock pre-Raphaelite, hope you have a great day.
I must admit I was stumped when I first got the invite, I could only think of Oasis and thee was no way i was going to a party in a cagoule and trainers!
DeleteI love that gilet but the colour always grated on me, I don't associate William Morris with pink and white, the toned down version is so much more me (and him!) xxx
Oh, wow, Vix! I love everything. Those maxi dresses look fabulous on you. You definitely know what works on your body. Beautiful prints…you are giving me ideas.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Stephenie!
