Feliz Navidad!

Feliz Navidad! For us, still on a high from our trip to Tenerife, Xmas Day had a Spanish flavour. I wore a vintage navy blue hand-embroidered cotton maxi dress I bought from the charity shop we'd stumbled upon in Puerto de la Cruz (€8!) and enjoyed a glass of chilled Manzanilla whilst putting the finishing touches to the dinner table.

Lord Jon wore one of his presents from me, a Wrangler denim shirt. Behind him is our concession to Xmas, our Ian Snow globe baubles strung on a log rescued from the wood pile and a 99p handmade woollen deer I felt sorry for in the charity shop, the lights are up all year round.

The dinner table is covered with an ancient purple velvet curtain, the centrepiece is a vintage wooden bobbin salvaged from an Indian textile factory and the Santa boxes came from The Works (£2 for four) which I filled with toy cars, jet balls and sweets. I made my own paper crowns from old wrapping paper and hand wrote terrible Xmas jokes on gift tags.

What does a frog wear on his feet? Open Toad Sandals!

Rather than going out for an Indian, the Dead Relatives Society (which this year consisted of Tony, my brother, Marcus & us) dined chez Kinky.

The lads started with melon drizzled with balsamic vinegar accompanied by Iberian ham (I just had the melon). I spotted these vintage Denby Arabesque plates in the clearance charity shop priced up at £1 last week (I've got the matching coffee service, which was Mum & Dad's wedding present in 1966).

The carnivores had Spanish chicken (recipe HERE) served with patatas bravas, padron peppers, carrots baked with sesame seeds, honey and wholegrain mustard and shredded, roasted Brussels sprouts with chilli flakes and vegan bacon bits. I swapped the chicken for ratatouille (made using a Katy Beskow recipe). In keeping with the Spanish theme, Tony donated a case of Tempranillo, a gift from a supplier, which Jon and I made short work of.

After we'd demolished dinner we spent the rest of the day playing a hilarious booze-fuelled game of Trivial Pursuit. Tony and Marcus bade us farewell at 8pm leaving us to doze in front of the TV with a glass of Limoncello.

It was William's first Xmas as a house cat and he behaved impeccably, well, apart from leaping on the table and trying to wrestle Tony's Iberian ham off him. He was spoiled with gifts, a bagful of catnip toys, feathers on sticks and jangly balls, a cat tunnel and Dreamies galore.

We even treated him to a sparkly new collar from Cool Cat Collars (linking 'cos we love them!)

And it wasn't just William who was spoiled. Here's our gifts to each other and from Tony, Marcus, Liz & Al, Liz's mum Hazel, Liz & Adrian and lovely neighbours, the Aslam Family.

Art and baking.

Food and drink galore.

Secondhand kitsch.

A bespoke hat and crochet sun top, Mdina glass bottle stopper and Snag tights (the best!)

A vintage Indian hand woven silk throw & a modern woven shirt, kitschy cushions, colours and scents.

Lord Jon excelled himself with the jewellery buying (as if he didn't spoil me enough on my birthday) and the vintage Pluto tin in one of the previous collages was crammed with vintage Kuchi gems.

Here's three of the new old rings in situ.

Liz made me this amazing feather headband, I cannot wait for the festival season!

Xmas is very much a one day affair in our house. Each to their own but the thought of lolling about for a week in pyjamas guzzling chocolate makes me feel quite ill.

Boxing Day kicked off with a Wii Fit workout and a brisk walk, we had noodles for lunch and a salad for tea.

We were hoping to go on a National Trust adventure today (Wednesday) but the weather was atrocious. I got up at 6am, did my Wii Fit workout and went back to bed carrying two mugs of tea and William slung over my shoulder and read for an hour instead. It's been a pottering around type of day - hence the blog post. As you can see from the headdress, I've been playing around with my tin of tribal delights.

So far this week we've watched House of Gucci (Dec 23rd), Belfast (Xmas Eve) and A Haunting in Venice (Xmas Day).

My favourite film by far was last night's, Saltburn. With some outstanding acting, a darkly comic plot, a banging Brit Pop soundtrack and the most spectacular cinematography, it's gone straight into my top three films of the year. Barry Keoghan was amazing in The Banshees of Inisherin but his performance as the unreliable narrator, Oliver Quick, left me speechless.

I'm glad I stocked up on books, I'm already halfway through my third this week. At this rate I might make it to 100 by the end of the year.

Thanks so much for all your kind comments on my Winter Solstice post. I hope Xmas was everything you hoped for (and bearable for those of you dreading it). See you soon!

  1. You are right - Jon REALLY did good with that exceptional haul of jewellery (I am interested to know how he got it all in the house without you knowing 🤣) and William is looking quite splendid, x

Christmas is barely one day here too, and this morning I would have been putting away the very few decorations which made an appearance, but my sewing machine called more loudly and I’ve been messing around with fabric all day instead.

Hugs to you for a peaceful week and hope that Storm Gerrit has not had too much of an impact on you.

    1. He did me proud, didn't he? When it arrived I was sent upstairs and told to keep out of the way until I was called - I overheard lots of furious sellotape and paper rustling so I
knew it was something for me.
I nearly had a sewing day yesterday, too but got distracted by blogs and books. Messing around with fabric is an idyllic way to spend a miserable day.
No damage from Storm Gerrit surprisingly. The wind was so strong last night I broke the habit of a lifetime, got out of bed and shut the window! xxx

  3. Looks like you had a great day, we had non-stop rain and some parts of the country had flooding and power outages, not great when you have prawns in the fridge. The jewellery took my breath away, just gorgeous. I had a low key Xmas with my parents, and brother's family and we always have a quiz organised by my 17 year old niece, hilarity ensued. I saw Saltburn over Xmas as well, a fantastic film with some jaw dropping moments. I loved the small scenes where they are all lazing about in the sun in cane chairs with various blankets and throws and reading Harry Potter books. The visuals were stunning.

    1. Hello Diane! We've had non-stop rain for days but nothing like your poor country has been subject to. I hope you managed to save some of your prawns. Why do power outages only ever happen when the fridge & freezer is full?
Your Xmas sounds fab, I 'd love to hear the questions your niece set for your quiz. After we finished Trivial Pursuit we just carried on using the cards and questioning each other that way - maybe the answers will stick and we'll be brilliant new Xmas.
Another Saltburn fan. It really was a treat to watch, wasn't it? Each scene was a beautifully composed snapshot, a bit like a Wes Anderson film. xxx

  4. Your Christmas meal looked delicious! imaginative and so not Christmas!! ha ha.. the men were working so the got two large chickens cooked by me with all the trimmings, pigs in blankets, etc etc and sprouts from the allotment (ta da!) We had a lovely evening as both sons stayed. Boxing day and beyond our call centre went into work from home mode and I sat in my sons bedroom with headset/laptops etc and it worked fine. I haven't seen any of the tv you did so will be seeking it out, haven't been outside the door for days so am off for a swim this morning. You have some wonderful gifts there (love the pale blue pendant) and I am pleased to see William has some too. I got Mollie 2 collars for a fiver on Amazon, one has a father Christmas pendant and the other (for New Year) has a lovely blingy snowflake. Yes, the Brighton event would have been right up your street - there was potential for a pop up vintage market with all those people. Your Christmas day dress is the most fabulous colour and the headress your friend made is amazing - I think headresses could become a big thing this coming year! Look forward to seeing you in festival attire in 2024! Betty

    1. Thanks, Betty! Jon and the boys aren't into traditional roast dinners at all, they much perfect something a bit more exotic and spicy. That Spanish chicken recipe was really simple, a one pot dish, no faffing about - not that I cooked it, that was Jon's department. I bet the lads loved your Xmas feast and how fantastic to be eating the sprouts you grew on the allotment!
I'm glad work let you work from home. The weather's been far too grim to venture far.
William's auntie Michelle bought him a collar from Amazon after he lost his when we were in Santorini, he's obviously used to the best as he managed to lose hers in 24 hours!
Yes, I loved the Brighton video, both the lights and the hoards of onlookers, I love the positive energy of big crowds.
I'm tempted to wear that headress out for New Year, I love how tall it makes me look! xxx

  5. Oh wasn't Wednesday a dreadful day? I've never seen anything so miserable, dark, dreary and wet!

Your festive celebrations looked like lots of fun. Loved your Xmas day dinners and what wonderful presents. The jewellery is as our USA cousins say is: 'awesome'. Lovely outfits and as for the feather head dress don't wait for festival season!
Liking the look of 'Saltburn' - thank you for the heads up.

    You spoiled William rotten!

Hope you have a banging New Year's Eve and the very best to you and Jon and 2024.

    1. Hello Vronni! Wasn't it dreadful? It didn't get light all day. Today's not much better but at least I don't need the lights on!
Jon's got such a great eye for a jewellery bargain, I was excited by the tin,m I couldn't believe it when he told me to open it and it was stuffed with treasures.
Much love to you and yours for 2024! xxx

  6. Sounds like you had a fun time. I might have to steal your Santa boxes idea...so much better than conventional crackers!
What a haul of Christmas presents! You have some beautiful piece of jewellery there.
For once, there's been some great TV. We enjoyed House of Gucci too and I enjoyed a second viewing of Belfast. I went to see A Haunting in Venice at the cinema and jumped out of my skin more than once!
I'd heard of Saltburn. Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't realised it was available on Amazon Prime. xxx

    1. We had a lovely day! Those boxes are so much better than a conventional cracker where everything usually ends up in the bin. In hindsight I should have got Jon to make mine as it wasn't quite as exciting when I'd made it myself!
House of Gucci was really good, when we saw the trailer at the cinema we dismissed it as being a bit dull. You will love Saltburn, I was mesmerised! xxx

  7. I'm loving the sound of your Spanish flavoured Xmas, Vix, and your dress is an absolute stunner! I'm bowled over by your haul of Christmas presents, Jon's jewellery extravaganza in particular. And oh my goodness, isn't William one spoiled cat? I'm sure I won't be sharing your post with Bess, who is in the naughty corner from molesting our tree ...
Seems like we didn't share Wednesday's weather: it was supposed to be wet and miserable but it didn't rain all day.
Oh, and I'm considering starting a Belgian branch of the Dead Relatives Society next year! xxx

    1. We never really eat traditional British food (unless Jon's in Spoons with his fish and chips) so it seemed a perfect opportunity to recreate some of the stuff we'd enjoyed in Spain. The lads loved it.
Bess is such a cheeky girl with her tree antics, William's leaping on the table trying to steal ham was so funny especially as Tony had bought him a bag of treats for Xmas, talk about biting the hand that feeds!
You're always very welcome to join up with the English branch of the Dead Relatives Society! xxx

    1. Ps My nephew flew off to Athens yesterday. His girlfriend's Mum lives there and she was spending Xmas with her. He normally lives in London but was home for the holidays so had to fly from Stansted yesterday. Luckily the storm had abated considerably to allow travel. He was telling me his flight to Greece cost £250 (I assume that was return) then he had his flight from Edinburgh on top of that. Wonder why they don't do direct flights from Edinburgh?

      Delete
    2. Oh no, Jon's been struggling with that horrible cold, too. What a time to catch the lurgy and thank goodness you managed to get through Xmas Day. Get well soon!
Your lucky nephew. We did look at Athens for my birthday but the flights were really expensive - I think Jet2 fly from most provincial airports but their direct flights don't start until the end of Feb. I bet he's had a wonderful time, Greece are having an exceptionally mild winter so far! xxx

  13. You got some gorgeous gifts this year, including William's. Saltburn is now my film of the year. Alan fell asleep halfway through ... he's a man of little or dubious tastes ... I almost want to watch it again without the sound of snoring in the background.

All the very best for the New Year to you both, and of course the beautiful William. xx

  15. OOOH you are SO fancy!! Will be glad to see the back of 2023 even though there is so very much to be grateful for - it has been a painful one for our family and for some of our friends. Christmas was particularly bittersweet. Still, loads to look forward to - we are trying to stuff January and February with gorgeous things to take our minds off any bleak weather nonsense! Your beautiful feather headpiece reminds me that I have a black feather capelet in the attic - I see a very goth winter ahead lol

  17. Long ago I purchased a bulky velvet bag* at auction, and upon opening it discovered it contained a fluffy black feather fan. Haven't found an occasion for the fan yet; however, your magnificent headdress is giving me an idea to repurpose it. (* Why buy a big velvet bag, you ask? Needed a new cat-proof case for my nightie.)

Your themed holiday dinner setting was inspired, Vix, as was your elegantly simple blue dress. Compliments to Jon, too, for wearing those neat boots with the new blue shirt. The world needs fewer fleeces worn with thick-soled "athletic" shoes!

    1. Hello Beth! Would I ever question the need to buy something velvet ? I like the reasoning behind your velvet bag and would love to know who the glamorous previous owner was with her feather fan. I love your idea for repurposing the fan - I've got a peacock feather one in a cupboard somewhere - bought from outside a temple in South India - I might take inspiration from you!
Thanks for your kind words - those are actually Jon's posh Clarks slippers, almost too stylish to be kept indoors! xxx

You look wonderful in your outfit too. Great food choices! We had nice meals with both sides of the family during Christmas and the following days. My sister-in-law prepared all sea menu with different fish and sea products. It was really good and all locally sourced.
