A Week Is A Long Time in Blogland

Doesn't time fly? In between eBay listing, charity shopping, swimming, reading, watching, crocheting, socialising and getting dressed, this week's fled. I thought I'd better squeeze in a blogpost before what I've been up to this week becomes ancient history.

First up, here's what I've been wearing.....

Monday - vintage Adini Indian block print maxi dress with 1970s Phool jacket, secondhand Clarks boots, vintage Gujarati tribal pendant and a Monsoon wool fedora.

Tuesday - charity-shopped Levis, vintage Anokhi blouse, second-hand Reiss fedora, 1970s tooled leather belt, second-hand Clarks knee high boots and 1960s leather coat.

Wednesday - Vintage Shubette of London mythical beasts maxi worn with a 1970s suede coat, secondhand Proper Topper fedora and 1970s Spanish tooled leather coin belt.

Thursday - Kharibu block printed midi dress, vintage suede waistcoat, secondhand Clarks boots, Rajasthani silver earrings and Monsoon felted wool hat

Friday - vintage Pakistani block printed kaftan, vintage tooled leather belt, 1960s silk screen printed Indian scarf and charity-shopped Aldo fedora.

I really didn't need a new pair of boots but when I spotted these waxed leather Timberland beauties in Banardos priced up at £4 (they retail at £160) and saw that they were a UK size 6.5 it would have been rude not to add them to my collection! In addition to my new boots, I also snaffled a pair of Clarks Victorian-style lace-up ankle boots, a 1970s tooled leather belt (worn on Tuesday with my Levis), a Monsoon angora cardi and a River Island fluffy polo neck for the grand total of £7.

Find of the week has to be the microwave we picked up for a tenner from the Salvation Army. We've been thinking about buying one for a while. Now we can batch cook and save having to use the oven so often and, as I loathe seeing kitchen gadgets on display, it fits into the cupboard perfectly. Who needs Black Friday?

Lord Jon's feeling rather pleased with himself after snaffling the last pair of olive suede Wallabees in Clarks' half price sale. Not only his size but, named after the Somerset village where Glastonbury is held, Pilton. It's a sign!

Also from Banardos, I found this boiled Merino wool chores jacket by hipster Los Angeles based menswear label, Buck Mason, on the womenswear rail. It is current stock and on their website priced $225 - I paid £2!

We popped over to Birmingham to visit our friends, Steve and Graziella, at their incredibly cool shop, Moseley Vintage Hub in the Digbeth area of the city. They used to run the Moseley Vintage Fair where Jon & I traded for many years and, if you ever visited, you'll know that they have an amazing eye for retro homewares.

Amongst a few hundred other bits and pieces I'm seriously tempted with both the Indian advertising signs and the incredible Art Nouveau cast iron fire surround below. I just need to work out where I can shoehorn them in!

Moseley Vintage Hub is every weekend at Unit C1, The Basement, Bowyer Street, Digbeth B10 0SA. Find them HERE or follow them on Facebook

Last night we attended the opening night of Walsall Society of Artists annual exhibition at Walsall's critically acclaimed New Art Gallery (HERE). Liz has eight artworks on display including the lady in the pink top, based on a vintage photo of her Mum, Hazel.

Dawn and Brian are always winners in the style stakes. Her 1950s swing coat was a Second To None buy, the faux fur stole a lucky charity shop find.

The fishing scene and Sarah from Number Two (the stylish free hand embroidered lady with the cigarette) are two more of Liz's pieces. Give Liz a follow HERE.

I've been Liz's model since the dawn of time. That's me in her Hanging on the Telephone painting. My witchy looking 1960s panne velvet maxi dress is from Samuel Sherman's Sambo line and was a car boot sale find about fifteen years ago.

There's been shopping, lots of shopping! We've squeezed in two mornings of charity shopping although, with the near-biblical amounts of rain, I've only managed to photograph a fraction of it.

Coast tulle skirt (new with tags); vintage Astraka fake fur; Reclaimed Vintage repurposed 1970s fabric top; Moleskin breeches; Desigual embroidered blouse (new with £85 tag still attached); 1970s fake fur; Thought sustainable Tencel shift dress; Seasalt, Cornwall cotton "Seamstress Dress"; two retro 1990s Puma deadstock training tops; 1970s Moorlands child's sheepskin jacket.

1980s Match Set knitted jacket; Swedish label, Weekday, canvas chores jacket; Cos wool jumper; Diesel jeans; Puma 1990s deadstock trainers; 1970s felted wool hat; 1960s Keynote tooled leather belt; Coach belt, made with British vegetable tanned cowhide; William Morris *Strawberry Thief* tapestry tote bag; Uniqlo samurai print leisure shirt.

With The English having piqued our interest in Westerns we're now watching Godless on Netflix and loving it. Strong women, a gripping plot and plenty of cowgirl chic to inspire my sartorial choices! Review HERE

I've crocheted 29 granny squares this week, eleven and two halves to go!

This week's book is Stone Blind by brilliant Brummie classicist, Natalie Haynes. Medusa is my favourite character from Greek Mythology. I wore my Medusa head acrylic necklace last night.

This morning Jon and I attended the Our Future Health appointments after swimming where we were weighed, measured, had our bloods taken and our blood pressure and cholesterol checked and, I'm pleased to say, were told that we're fit, healthy and in the ideal BMI range. Best thing of it was...I didn't faint when they took my blood, there's a first time for everything! UK residents can join up HERE.

Have a fab weekend, see you on the other side!

    1. I loved that yellow chair, too! It's exciting having a microwave, like i've joined the 21st Century. I'll be batching cooking and all sorts! xxx

  2. It sounds like you've had quite a week, topped off by a clean bill of health. I'm surprised you've found time for all those granny squares!
Hope the exhibition went well - it must be lovely to be immortalised in a painting by such a talented friend!
Gorgeous outfits. I am in love with that button up Anokhi blouse and that Spanish tooled leather belt!
Moseley Vintage Hub is going on my list of places to visit. Can't believe I've missed it! xxx

    1. I've just managed another granny square whilst watching Pointless. Hopefully I'll get them finished over the weekend and then the fun begins - trying to make them into something wearable!
It's been a challenge getting dressed this week and coping with monsoon-like rain, stripping off to swim and enabling easy access to my veins.
You'd love Moseley Vintage Hub, you'll be in there for hours! xxx

  3. Wow, what a week! Time certainly speeds by but what with work my weeks are definitely a lot more boring than yours.
I'm loving each and every one of your outfits, and I can't get over how fab those Levis are on you. Other favourites are the Shubette of London maxi and the Kharibu block printed midi dress as well as the leather and suede coats. And of course it would have been rude to leave the fabulous boots behind!
What a treasure trove Moseley Vintage Hub is, and I do love Liz's artwork. I'm following her on Instagram where I already spotted you on the phone!
Well done on not fainting when they took your blood, and I'm pleased to hear you've both been declared fit and healthy! xxx

    1. I don't think this week will be quite as sociable - I'll be glued to the footy for most of it!
Thanks for the outfit love, it's always a struggle when the weather's so wet and miserable and also having to factor in arm accessibility for blood tests and stuff I can slip on and off easily in the swimming baths - 21st Century problems!
Moseley Vintage Hub is a veritable treasure trove, there's even a vintage revolving glass cabinet filled with brooches, you'd have a field day! xxx

  4. I love all of the outfits you wore this week and I agree, the cast fireplace surround is fantastic! The dining room table and chairs in your friends shop would be a perfect fit in my dining room. Too bad shipping would be prohibitive. That alone would blow my budget. You've had a busy week. 1. Hello Ranee - and thank you! Isn't the fire surround gorgeous? I need Jon to build another wing on the house so I can have an excuse for buying it! The G Plan dining suite is a classic. Steve & Graz were shipping to abroad but, like you say, the prices have just risen so much it's not worth it any more. Hope you're well! xxx

  5. Doesn't time just fly? Loving every outfit, top to bottom - you just look fabulous, Vix. I always pore over your purchases - love the tulle skirt, the Diesel jeans, Desigual top and the leather belts. Jon's closet must be close to bursting with all the good stuff you find for him. I would have snagged that samurai shirt for L.

I love going to art exhibits - Liz's art is incredible. So fun seeing people dressed up, isn't it?

    1. Thanks so much, Sheila! It was a challenge dressing for the incessant rain last week, this week looks like more of the same.
The tulle skirt sold in minutes. I bet that's someone's Xmas party outfit! xxx

  6. His lordship would do well to get you that painting for Xmas! It's too fab to let it go off into the ether, never to be seen again!I can't believe the bargains you scoop each week. Best I've done is a brand new pair of Ecco boots from the chassis, similar to your new Clark's ones but I paid 25 squid for them! They're perfect for my needs though and they'll probably be burying me in them, quality's excellent! xxx

    1. Isn't it fab? He did buy me another of Liz's for Xmas last year - the one where he and I had posed for her. There's lots of people out there with me on their walls!
£25 for Ecco boots is a steal, I bet you were dancing around the shop after finding them! xxx

  7. I always swoon over your purchases!!! Love them!!! I knew that dress was Seasalt!
The microwave was a good find!! We bought a Breadmaker for £10 in Swansea BHF electricals charity shop around 12 years ago and it is still going strong!!
I'm v excited about your granny squares!!! Can't wait to see what you do!
I need to find a vintage tooled leather belt!! Perhaps you find such good vintage leather ware in your region because of Walsall 's industry history?x

    1. That breadmaker is doing well! I love a bargain household appliance.
I'm up to 40 granny squares now, two triangles to go. I shall spend this week turning the pile into something wearable - I hope!
We do love our leather (and suede) in Walsall! A lot of it still ends up in London and abroad as it's too high-end for the likes of us plebs. xxx

Every pair of boots is necessary, they always add a slightly different dimension to an outfit - that's my excuse when I'm clambering over the boot mountain to reach the wardrobe! xxx

  10. my goodness a jam packed week - I am so envious that your friend uses you to model her paintings (hanging on the telephone) and of course love the adini/vintage goddess dresses overload - such fabulous dresses which look superb on your petite frame. Microwaves are unfashionable and might even fall into vintage territory soon?! but they have a lot to offer once we get bored with air fryers they will be back! you are expert at finding fabulous designer label bargains, I wouldn't recognise one if it hit me in the face - your knowledge/research and experience is clearly why you do so well in your business, it's more than luck:) my week has been dull by comparison, full of overtime at work, a nasty sore throat virus and ...feeling sorry for me let lol?! sewerage pipe broken in the woods creating a massive pond of you know what ha ha ...

    1. Hello Betty! I'm sorry to hear that you've been struggling with a virus, loads of work and that sewage leak, I hope this week is much, much better.
Whenever there's a Walsall Society of Artists exhibition on I always get recognised in town by people who've seen one of Liz's paintings!
It is all about the air fryer, isn't it? Jon was very excited to spot the microwave especially as it was exactly the right size to fit into the cupboard.
Thanks for the kind comments about my outfits!
A lot of the time I don't have a clue about a label, if it looks and feels good I buy it and look it up when I get home. xxx

  11. Howdy our hootin' tootin' Vix girrrrl !!! You and Lord Jon are looking fine and dandy. Thanks for the tip on the Netflix 'Godless'. I do love a good Western. I also have 'The English' with Emily Blunt on BBC iPlayer in my list.... after Monsieur & I have finished watching some supernatural shizz (his choice). I certainly would not have been able to resist those leather boots. As always, some fab chazza finds.

Lovely to see Liz's work at the exhibition. Dawn does look fab! Your friend's vintage hub looks right up my street too. On to house work ... a microwave is super useful. I've been batch cooking in the slow cooker at the weekends, then warming it up during the week. I simply don't have time to cook darling! Monsieur is currently cooking up some spaghetti - will see if I can squeeze in another couple of your blog posts before I am summoned to the table... if not, I shall return... xXx

    1. Hello, gorgeous lady! We loved The English and Godless wasn't far behind. Monsieur's choice of Supernatural shizz sounds as painful as Lord Jon's Sci-Fi shizz - I have to leave him to it.
I like the idea of batch cooking in the slow cooker and reheating it in the microwave, two low cost ways of cooking in one. I need to dust off my slow cooker dhal recipe.
Hope Monsieur's spaghetti was delish. xxx

  12. Hi Vix, so many great outfits from you, where do I start? I think my favourite is possibly the Adini block- print dress and Phool jacket with one of your many fedoras . You clearly know what style of hat suits you. The Art Nouveau cast iron fire surround is just beautuful- what an amazing piece.
I had a lucky find today at a charity shop in St Andrews ( they are often quite pricey) and came upon a gorgeous 1940s ( I think) black dress with sequin detail on the collar and cuffs for a very reasonable price and it fits me too! I couldn't hand over my money quick enough.

I don't feel dressed without a hat at this time of year, they seem to add a certain something to an outfit (and beat carrying an umbrella!)
Hope all's well in your world, lovely to hear from you. xxx

  15. Fabulous outfits but my favourite hard as it was to choose, was the Shubette 'Mythical Beasts' dress; absolutely gorgeous and you have a hat to match every outfit! Your finds were also wonderful; I can't get over people donating BNWT garments to charity shops - but sometimes shops donate their unsold items to charity shops - which I do understand! Jon's boiled wool jacket was superb; I'd definitely wear it.

What a fabulous vintage shop your friends have; so many brilliant things.

Congratulations to Liz on being exhibited. She is very talented. I shall check her art work out for sure.

Hope you're managing to stay warm and dry!

    1. Thanks, Vronni! The colours in the Mythical Beasts maxi are my favourite, I've got three vintage dresses in the ame colourway, I must have a problem!
It's crazy how many new clothes that nd up in the charity shops, a lot are cheap and nasty online purchases which probably cost more to return that cost in the first place but the designer and high end stuff is very puzzling. Walsall is home to TKMaxx's main distribution centre so I imagine a fair bit comes from there. xxx

  16. Those waxed leather boots are not only beautiful but also indestructible! They're a match to my oldest bag -- a simple fold-over bucket with a shoulder strap I carried when a schoolgirl. An annual suds session with saddle soap and it's good for another season or twenty. But Lord Jon's olive suede Wallabees prompt my asking, "How does he keep suede footwear presentable, especially a light color?" My shoe shine box includes an ancient suede brush -- but I confess I use it only on my winter felt hats.

    1. I can't understand why anyone would fall out with those Timberland boots still, their loss, my gain!
We use a spray suede protector - made by Kiwi - on all our suede footwear which stops them getting stained. I've also got a suede eraser, a bit like an old-school rubber, which is brilliant for removing marks on suede clothing! xxx

Sort of wish you’d not gone over to Birmingham and reminded me of Moseley - such a lovely place . . . many decades ago, long before Himself, there was an ill-fated love. The one that got away, could never be. The only one I still occasionally think back to and wonder “what if?”

  19. So fabulous outfits, love your maxi dresses (wow, that mythical beasts one!) and the kaftan is one my favourites! and love those jeans too!. And I'm admiring the Timberland boots and the Clarks ones too, so cool!. Also admiring Lord Jon's attires, he rocks his Clarks and fab jacket!.
Glad you found a bargainous microwave!, I've never been a huge fan of them, but have to recognize they save energy and time, particularly if you use it to cook vegetables. I put a sliced aubergine in the microwave for ten minutes, instead of baking it in the oven for 1 hour!. My advice is covering anything, and use pyrex!.
Lovely pics of your visit to your friend's shop, which looks really fantastic. And always admiring your friend Liz's work of art, she's so talented. Looking fabulous and elegant at the gallery!
Your crochet looks really great and looking forward to see what's going on!
