Stop me if you've seen this one before...

....Actually, don't bother,  I'm sure all my regular readers will recognise what I'm wearing. I've owned this Van Allan printed cotton maxi dress (and her green twin) for over twenty years, purchased from eBay in 2001 from the original owner. With them she enclosed a note sharing their history. She'd bought the pair of them with her earnings from her Saturday job in Van Allen in 1970 and had worn the blue one to the Isle of Wight Festival where she'd seen, amongst other acts, Jimi Hendrix. I love that this dress has shared the air with possibly one of the coolest men to have walked the planet.

I've worn it to many festivals over the years from Glastonbury to the now defunct, Big Chill, I've been to all-dayers in Spoons and pub crawls around Birmingham, it's been clubbing in Mumbai and negotiated the backwaters of Kerala in a canoe. On Tuesday it accompanied me to the baths before Mushrooms Benedict in Walsall's Wetherspoons.

Its been worn with Doc Martens, clogs, wellies and even buffalo leather sandals, made to measure while I sat on the roadside in Mysore. I've thrown shawls over the top to visit Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu and fake fur coats to keep off the chill at 3am around a festival campfire. Over the years it's been accessorised with 25l backpacks, tooled leather shoulder bags and raffia clutches. This time it was a Diesel denim jacket, a raffia and leather basket adorned with applique stars and a pair of white plimsols with glittery toecaps. Look at Polly Piglet, its been six years since we lost her but I still get weepy when I see her photo.

Somewhat discombobulated with the Bank Holiday weekend, Tuesday felt odd. After our swim (40 lengths!) and Spoons breakfast we muddled through, wrapping the eBay parcels which Jon failed to drop off at the Post Office as the queue was out of the door and flowing onto the car park outside. I photographed and listed a few things on eBay whilst Jon did some work on Gilbert and we were visited by both Ollie and Mr Trousers.

After a month of twice-weekly swims my swimsuit was looking a bit tatty and failing to find anything suitable in the chazzas I browsed a well-known British sports discount website and found this crazy pop art beauty. It claims to be extra durable, is chlorine resistant and guaranteed for a year and, even better, was 75% off the original price. I can't wait to see it in real life!

Wednesday was charity shopping day. It had been six days since we'd last set foot in a chazza (goodness knows how I stayed sane during those long months of lockdowns!) and I raced through my Wii Fit, breakfast and parcel wrapping to be out bright and early.

This organic cotton Indian block-printed dress is by bang-on ethical label People Tree and made in collaboration with the V&A, copied from an antique Persian textile in their achives. It retailed at £139 and sadly its not my size - but it's already winging itself to a good home. There's also a handmade 1970s tie-neck blouse, a handknit Aran cardi, a Yves St Laurent shirt and a 1980s blouse made in Hong Kong by Jerseymasters. The Fat Face PJ bottoms are for Jon and I'm keeping the American Apparel USA-made shorts and the modern belt with Ancient Greek replica coins.

A batwing top by Superdry, a handmade vintage mohair jumper, some Original Penguin plimsols (Jon's keeping these), a handmade Aran waistcoat, a 1970s Western belt, a wrapover cotton skirt with the Cortefeil tags still attached (a Spanish fashion chain), a 1980s BHS suede waistcaot and another 1970s tie-neck blouse.

And another vintage cross-body leather bag for the woman who claims not to be into bags! Having studied Russian (unsuccesfully) at school I can recognise the Cyrillic script but haven't a clue what it says.

I wore another old favourite you'll no doubt recognise, a hand-embroidered cotton maxi dress which belonged to ex-blogger, Sabine's German mother in the 1960s. She sent it me in 2010 and it has popped up on my blog with alarming regularly in the last 12 years, the most memorable outing was probably when it visited the Taj Mahal with me in 2019.

On Wednesday I wore a second-hand embroidered cotton blouse originally from Zara, some Topshop gold boots (just peeking out from below the hem) bought in their sale five years ago and a gold bag made from recycled scraps of leather from Jaipur.

Laundry done and pegged out in the 16°C sunshine to dry, I started my next book, Names for the Sea, a memoir of British academic Sarah Moss and her family who relocated to Iceland. If the cold wasn't bad enough, the non-existence of secondhand shops, poor public transport and the lack of fresh fruit & veg in the shops has me shuddering.

Wandering around for some dandelion leaves to add to Jacob's lunch of homegrown rocket and lettuce I was thrilled to see that more of our tulips were out.

And the leaves on the hostas, grown from bulbs last year, were gradually unfurling.

Instagram w*nker time - here's Wednesday night's tea, Jon's homemade paneer and ladies finger Punjabi masala served with lemon & jasmine scented basmati rice. This was followed by lashings of rum and cola, a couple more instalments of The Cane Field Killings, Secrets of the Museum (the BBC's fascinating series about the V&A) and Interior Design Challenge with Alan Carr.

Thursday meant another charity shopping trip (the results of which are currently in a heap in the middle of the lounge). I wore the 1970s gingham maxi I'd bought for £1 from Cancer UK back in 2010.

I wore it with some vintage Polaroid sunglasses and my TopShop cropped army jacket along with a Jasmine Le Bon gilt necklace, another recent charity shop buy.

...and some ridiculous earrings I'd spotted on eBay.

This dress has had loads of fun in the twelve years I've owned it, worn whilst trading at vintage fairs and festivals and for days out with friends. Here's the first time I met Curtise and we're in Wetherspoons (where else?) I hadn't worn it for a while and took it to sell at The End of the Road last year where it won most tried on garment of the festival. Sadly for our customers nobody could get the zip up which I decided was a sign for me to keep it apparently being the only woman in existence it fits.

Lord Jon's getting plenty of wear out of the three organic cotton teeshirts we found in the Air Ambulance charity shop (or the Ambo, as we call it). He road-tested the Original Penguin plimsols he'd found in the charity shop on Wednesday and showing off the Raybans (made in Italy, not Chinese fakes) he found in the British Heart Foundation this morning.

Operation Mincemeat was fantastic, a gripping true life story of deception and with a cast that includes Kelly McDonald, Colin Firth, Penelope Wilton, Matthew McFadyen, Paul Ritter and Jason Isaacs you can't really go wrong. Jon thinks I've taken leave of my senses by booking tickets for The Lost City this afternoon but it looks so ridiculous that I feel compelled to see it.

I'll let you know if it was as daft as it looks!

  1. Oh, joy to see piggy and your friend, our friend, Curtise. I wonder if she'll resume blogging- I adored her style. A good piece of swimwear is essential for chlorinated pools. I'll be adding swimming this summer to my routine, but come fall, back to a pool. I'm self conscious now for pool but incentive. My family doesn't care at the lake. I love memoir books of gsls that give life a change in another part of the world. You might like Notes from a Blue Bike. I do remember many of your dresses- it's terrific they bring such memories or the experiences with them.

    1. Curtise was great fun, I wish she'd blog again.
I'm really disciplined and alwys wash our swimwear the minute we get back from our swim. I hope this professional one lasts a while although I did find another by the same sportwear brand in a charity shopo this morning so that should extend it's life a little more.
Polly Piglets ashes are waiting to scattered alongside Stephens and Franks so they can all be together again. xxx

    2. I wondered if that comment was from you, Elaine. I recognise your writing style! I was so thrilled to get that note when i bought the Van Allan dresses and when I'm selling at fairs and festivals if I know anything about the clothes I'm selling I always pass the story on to the customer. I wish everything I found came with a back story!
I love the sound of those sunglasses! xxx

  4. Oh my word, the leather bag with cyrillic writing is Bulgarian and made in Burgas the region I live in. Sold for 28 Leva (14 Euros). Lise on the Black Sea.

  6. I remember the story of that Van Allen maxi dress. Talk about a dress that has been going places. Isn't it absolutely incredible that it has been to the Isle of Wight Festival? And then finding its green twin as well.
Sabine's mother's dress and the gingham maxi are fabulous too. I absolutely don't mind if I've seen it all before!
What a stunner is that swimsuit, and oh my, you've done well yet again at the chazzas. I get withdrawal symptoms if I've missed a week in charity shopping, but for some reason I didn't miss it very much during lockdown.
Love your Tulips and Hostas, both of which are missing in Dove Cottage's garden. The latter because they keep being shredded by the slimy creatures whenever I try to grow them! xxx

    1. I feel like I need to give those dresses lots of adventures after such an illustrious start in life. Not sure if I'll ever top Jimi Hendrix although I did wear the green one to see Jack White play with The Dead Weather.
I didn't miss the chazzas at all during lockdown but I'm twitchy if I go for longer than a few days now things are "normal" again.
I read on a blog that vaseline smeared on the pot rims keep the slugs off hostas, it does seem to work! xxx

  7. how lovely is that Van Allen dress, I shopped at the Kingston branch a lot in the 70s. Our chazzas are not turning up anything exciting but i did get a lovely EBay Anokhi win which has just arrived and looks brand new!

  8. Wonderful dresses! I loved them all but Sabine's mum's one is probably one of my all time favourites; the Zara blouse you wore with it looked as if it was made for it!

Your tulips are looking gorgeous; ours are finished now just about it. I wish you luck with the Hostas. They're slugs favourite nibble and we haven't managed to keep a Hosta in years - despite OH's late night slug hunts complete with torch!

Great finds at the chazza; I liked the long line Aran cardigan; you seem to find a lot of Aran in your chazzas. I've been meaning to read the Sarah Moss book but have decided based on your review that I couldn't live there - no second hand shops!

    Have a great weekend,

    1. Thanks, Vronni! I shall be wearing Sabine's Mum's dress until it falls to bits. Jon thought that blouse was part of the dress, it matches perfectly.
I'm excited about the tulips, it's funny that the ones I planted two years ago are blooming later than the ones I planted last October. My hostas were slug-free last year, I went mad with the vaseline around the tops of the pots and it really worked (thanks to Cherie who suggested that!)
We do seem to find a lot of Aran, that long line cardi is gorgeous, I risked it in the machine and it came out really well.
The Sarah Moss book is such an interesting read but its a real eye-opener! xxx

  9. I adore those earrings and love nothing more than making really quirky ones much preferring to wear two totally different ones. I find Sandra Bullocks botox frozen face a real put off when I see her in any films.

Before The Lost City only film I'd ever seen with Sandra Bullock was A Time To Kill. I didn't think her face looked particularly frozen in the film today or maybe I was distracted by Brad Pitt! xxx

  11. Not quite sure where Sarah Moss is coming from with some of her observations in that book (which I have read several times). There are both charity shops and a large second-hand market in Reykjavik. The public transport is certainly no worse than here in Bristol (not that it's brilliant here), and the fruit and veg selection in most supermarkets is totally amazing. I had the tastiest tomoatoes I have ever eaten in Iceland and, yes, they were Icelandic. She is spot on with the cold temperatures though, even in summer.

    1. Hello stranger! the book was written in 2009 at the peak of the finacial crisis so things must have changed. Tony and my brother spent a week in Reykjavik five years ago but their trip mostly involved climbing glaciers and football & secondhand shopping isn't their thing.
In the Sarah did meet a chef who was just about to start growing fruit and vegetables in polytunnels as an experiment, it sounds like it worked! xxx

  13. I love that your dress has "shared the air with Jimmy Hendrix." As for that swimsuit...very cool! The Zara top and dress work perfectly. I was scanning your charity shop haul and immediately had my eye on that dress until you mentioned it has already found a home. My eyes then darted to those shorts, also now rehomed. How funny! I am chuckling at you electing to see The Lost City. I like Sandra Bullock, but do remember falling asleep in the cinema years ago during one of her films. Hope you enjoyed it! :-D xxx

    1. Hello Claire, that dress is stunning, if it fitted me it wouldn't have been going anywhere. I'm not usually one for shorts but having tried those American Apparel on I shall hold on to them for a bit (and give you a shout if I don't wear them.)
I've reached the grand old age of 55 without ever having seen a romantic comedy and it was great fun. Red Right Hand was on the soundtrack along with an appearance by Brad Pitt - the only downside was Daniel Radcliffe - I think he might be the worst actor I've ever see. Sandra Bullock was fantastic and totally rocked a sequinned jumspuit! xxx

  14. How fun to know the history of that dress. Creating stories with clothes and learning the stories behind a clothing item are my favourite thing to do. Anyhow, the dress that was in the company of an amazing musician is fantastic and you wear it so well.
The art deco swimming costume seems really cool. Thar leather bag you found is gorgeous. From what I managed to read on the label of that gorgeous bag, it's just general stuff (article, number, model, colour- but colour isn't actually listed). I didn't make out the brand.
    Have a lovely weekend!

Jon always has great luck finding cool footwear when you go shopping. I hope your new swimsuit wears well - it certainly is fun to look at!

I miss Curtise's blog as well - she has such a great sense of humour. I follow her on Insta too, and she appears to be doing well. I've been missing blogging lately, and being able to tell a story instead of just posting a photo or two. Who knows, maybe I will resurrect Forest City Fashionista!

Love that funky print on the bathing suit!

Polly Piglet is before my time - she is so pretty, looks like a lovely girl. I get that way when I see old pics of my big boy Inigo - even after 7 years (I think) L and I both get misty-eyed when we talk about him. Some of our furry fam are more missed.

Love your frilly tulips! I reckon Jon must have a massive wardrobe too!
