Lost Treasure & A Trip To Paris

Monday was St Valentine's Day and, unusually for us and without any prior discussion, we both bought each other a card rather than making one ourselves.

The day started with a Wii Fit workout, a session of parcel wrapping and a load of washing. After breakfast, Jon combined a supermarket run with the Post Office drop-off.

The off-on-off rain meant that it took the best part of the day to take my eBay photos, I suppose I could do them inside the house but I much prefer natural light to mess around with camera settings.

My Lucky Brand dungarees hadn't been worn for a while so out they came, this time I combined them with my £1.49 charity-shopped cashmere & wool jumper, cashmere beer mittens and a me-made hat. As we didn't have the heating on, I'd been wearing a coat in the house but I took it off for the photo.

eBay listings finished, I spent the rest of the afternoon sweeping and dusting upstairs and, after a well-deserved soak in the bath, tucked into the Valentine's Day Punjabi Paneer Masala Jon had cooked for us, accompanied by a bottle of beer.

Later we watched the first of the BBC's mesmerising new series, Sex & Sensuality: The Allure of Art Nouveau.

The first episode was about the movement's inception in 19th Century Paris, a city which Jon & I haven't visited together since 1995 when I won two British Airways Business Class flights and five nights' accommodation in a posh hotel on the Champs-Élysées after entering a competition in the trade magazine, The Caterer.

There's a photo album in the shed but I'd be risking life and limb to get at it so here's twenty-eight-year-old me (and my natural hair) being awarded my tickets by the magazine's editor and publisher at what was then Birmingham's top hotel, The Swallow on the Hagley Road, where they treated me to lunch and Champagne (I'd have preferred a pint of lager).

It was absolutely chucking it down when I got up on Tuesday morning. After my Wii Fit session and breakfast, we emptied and cleaned the utility room as we'd changed our central heating insurance supplier and they were coming to service the boiler. I made myself scarce, sitting in the lounge with my crochet, making Jon another hat with a ball of "Heritage" yarn I'd snaffled from a 50p bucket in a charity shop last week.

Meanwhile, Jon set about restoring a vintage leather coat he'd been given years ago and hadn't worn in an age. When the rain finally abated I braved the Kinky Shed for the stock I'd sold on eBay, wrapped it up and Jon ran it round to the Post Office.

My twin and I wore the Dilli Grey cord maxi skirt with a vintage Indian block print dress tucked into it (from my mates, Old's Cool Traders) along with the Clarks' boots I found in the clearance charity shop on Sunday - I've just noticed they've still got the bright pink £3 labels stuck on the soles, just as well I didn't go charity shopping and kneel down to rummage through the boxes on the floor, someone might have thought I was touting for business.

Back on 19th November last year I shared a photo of my mum's bangle which I teethed on as a baby. The silver coin dating from the Moghul era, cast during the reign of Aurangzeb (1658 -1707), the son of Shah Jahan who built the Taj Mahal. Within minutes of publishing the post, I looked down at my wrist and realised, to my horror, that the coin was missing from the bangle.

I retraced my steps up the garden where I'd posed for a photo at least once a week since then, hoping it'll catch my eye glinting in the light but to no avail. Over the last three months, I shifted furniture, rolled up rugs and checked the joins in the floorboards but still nothing. Jon secretly found a replacement on eBay but in his excitement, he didn't read the description properly and it turned out to be a quarter rupee and Action Man-sized! After another hunt, he found something almost identical, slotted both of them onto an old silver bangle I'd had for years as a temporary measure, and surprised me with them for Xmas ( I didn't share a photo as I didn't want to admit that I'd lost the original).

The quarter rupee is from the reign of Shah Allam II (1760 - 1806) and the rupee dates from the reign of Farrukhsiyar (1713 - 1719).

From left: Shah Jahan, Shah Allam II and Farrukhsiyar

Guess what? When I was sweeping the landing on Monday I found Mum's coin wedged between my craft cupboard and the skirting board! Jon's taken the other two coins off the bangle and I'll wear them around my neck until I find the perfect bangle to hang them from.

After Monday night's documentary, we reverted to type and started watching a Scandi Noir, Young Wallander. It stars the very easy on the eye actor, Adam Pålsson who we know (and loved) in Before We Die, Moscow Noir and The Bridge although it seems strange for him to be speaking in English as opposed to his native Swedish. The creator of Kurt Wallander, Henning Mankell gave the series his blessing shortly before he died, which is good enough for us.

Storms permitting, we're off on a road trip tomorrow. I'll report back soon with tales of adventure!

  1. Great look with the dungarees! The yellow crochet beanie is a great pop of colour.
Sorry to hear you've lost the original coin, but good that you found it again- and nice of Jon to find the replacement. It's great to find something that was lost.
Art Nouveau is something I enjoy reading about and I'm sure I'd enjoy this new BBC show. The title is catching, I'm sure it'll attract viewers. Fun to know you visited this posh hotel in the past. I'm always startled seeing you with your natural blond hair, I'm so used to seeing you with dark hair...but that's a cute photo of you with the champagne. That mini dress looks great on you- 28 year old you looks 18.
    Love the maxi denim skirt!

    1. Thanks, Ivana! I was so pleased to find that coin. In my heart of hearts I knew it wasn't lost and that if I kept looking I'd find it eventually.
I hope you can get that Art Nouveau documentary at some point. You're right, add a bit of sex to the title and even a highbrow documentary can be a hit!
I still do a double-take when I catch myself in a mirror, after 40 years of blonde hair the dark locks can surprise me! I always wore mini dresses back then, I had to buy the dress to go out for lunch as my usual ones were indecently short! xxx

    2. I did the double take when I dyed my hair blond (or rather a friend of mine made me do it). The blond hair phase didn't take longer than a year or two I think. It can be fun to change a hair colour and it's interesting how it can influence our fashion choices.

  2. You are a super posh bird ! Winning a trip to Paris must have been awesome 😎

Looking forward to hearing where your travels take you tomorrow
What festivals do you think you will trade at this year ?

I was in shock when I won that competition, Jon and I were utterly broke at the time and couldn't believe our luck! xxx

    2. PS We're confirmed for Glasto but most of the other festivals haven't opened their application process yet, it's a slow old game! xxx

    1. I was so lucky! We went in August when most of the resident Parisians are on holiday so it was really quiet and easy to get around. It was absolutely gorgeous, especially around Montmartre and The Place de la Concorde where we'd take our baguettes and sit and people watch for hours. Like Venice, it really does live up to the hype! xxx

  4. I'm absolutely delighted that you found your Mom's coin. I'm happy to give things away, but I'm always traumatized if I lose something. The feeling if you manage to find it again is fantastic 🙂
Love the dungarees. They look really comfy as well as stylish.
I'll definitely be watching the BBC series, but we don't have Netflix, though my son is always saying we should get it.
If you like Stanley Tucci, his Italy show is coming to the BBC at the end of the month. Xxx

    1. I'm so relieved, Annie! Like you, I have no problem passing something on and knowing it's got a new home but thinking it was lost in the garden was too horrible to dwell on!
We were sharing a friend's Netflix account but we've splashed out and got the basic package now, the only trouble is that there's too much on there!
I like Stanley Tucci, I bet we'll love that series. Two weeks to go before Peaky Blinders comes back! xxx

  5. I know how you felt with the lost coin - so glad you found it (I am very superstitius too about losing things like that as to me it means doom!). I lost one of my earrings and the butterfly back in the swimming pool last week, I could see the stud in the depths and a young lad did a dive and got it for me but the butterfly back hasnt turned up - they are 22k gold from Dubai so I am very annoyed with myself but at least I have the earrings themselves! won't wear jewellery swimming again. Your forthcoming trip sounds full of mystery and excitement - so glad you are planning some travel. I love the picture of you with The Caterer tickets win - can see it's you but my goodness how you've changed!

    1. Well done to that lad for rescuing your earrings. You know what losing that back means? You've got to go back to Dubai and buy a new one!
Losing things is so frustrating, like I said to Annie, I'd rather give something away than lose it!
I can't believe that trip to Paris was almost thirty years ago. I remember it so well! xxx

  6. Still not sharing weather as, after a rainy start yesterday morning, we had glorious sunshine until it started raining today late afternoon. Your Valentine's Day cards made me chuckle. We're not really into Valentine, but when I saw a card in a shop saying "I love you because we hate the same things", I just had to get it for Jos!
However many times I see photos of you as a blonde, I'll never get used to it. You were definitely born with the wrong hair colour :-)
Yet another brilliant outfit with your Dilli Grey cord maxi skirt. We've got a charity shop where the price is written on the soles of shoes with green marker, which is very hard to shift. Can be quite embarrassing indeed.
What a relief the original coin turned up after all. I was mourning the loss of one of my favourite brooches, and found it hidden underneath a pile of cushions many months later! xxx

We're not into soppy stuff and heart shaped things either. I'd have bought the card you bought Jos if I'd seen it, too!
I can't believe I was ever blonde or that I didn't change the colour earlier!
Its so annoying when charity shops mark shoes like that (and don't get me started on books!)
I'm glad you found your favourite brooch, I was beginning to despair of ever finding that coin! xxx

  7. Firstly, I have to say that those cards are hilarious and so cute!.
You rock those dungarees, dear Vix, looking particularly fabulous!, love your striped top and matchy hat and mittens (delightfully matchy!).
And loving your cord skirt with the dress-as-a-blouse, so interesting idea!.
Glad that you finally found the coin, so stressful when you lose something around the house and don't find it after moving every furniture. And so lovely that Jon looked for a perfect replacement for you (now you have another story to tell too!)
I'll keep my eyes peeled for that documentary about Art Nouveau!

Thank you, I love those dungarees, they're such a departure from my usual thing, I feel very cheeky in them. The dress as a blouse works really well, you get an underkirt, too!
I'm so relieved about that coin and had to smile at the thought of Jon trawling the internet and despairing at the mini one that turned up!
That documentary is fascinating, it's the UK next week! xx

You look fab in your dungarees and the wonderful Dilli Grey skirt. Loved the Clarke's boots especially at a bargainous 3.00.

i´m glad that the original one turned up finally - must be the week of finding long missed stuff: today i discovered - in a strange place - the DVD with our wedding photos i missed since 2017!!

  11. I laughed out loud at your cards - you two are partners after my own heart.

You look lovely with blonde hair - do you ever think about going back? I hope the coat restorer worked on Jon's masterpiece!

I am so happy for you that you found your missing teething coin, Vix! I still scour the front area of my building hoping I will spot my giant grey pearl from my earrings, but I fear it's gone forever. I hate that feeling when you lose something. The replacements are beautiful, and now you have a full set, hooray!

Loving Jon's toque collection that you've made him. I've pretty much abandoned my own crocheting (I'm such a dabbler), in favour of my current art projects.

Funny you should mention that, I came across a photo of a woman on the internet with very long fair hair and have wondering if I should do the same, it'd certainly hide those pesky silver streaks that keep arriving every 4 -5 weeks in my hairline!
Wouldn't it be wonderful if your earring turned up, along with my coin and Beate's wedding photos on DVD? Third time lucky and all that!
I did have remind myself how to make those hats (toques!), I've made three in the last few weeks, they're a good passer-of-time when it's too wet to play! xxx

Your dungarees look lovely with your cashmere and wool stripy jumper. I can't believe you are the same person as the blonde in the photo! You are very lucky to have the complexion to be a brunette and a blonde! Love Paris. We haven't been since the 90s either - although it doesn't feel that long ago. Scary. God, I hatedthat photo and was mortified with it splashed all over The Caterer magazine. I was compelled to go out and buy the dress I was wearing as my boss said I should try and make an effort to look normal rather than rock up in the weird vintage stuff I usually wore.
That documentary series is really promsing, the presenter is very funny. I want to go back to Paris now! xxx

  15. So glad you found your coin again - I've found so many missing things in that crack between the floorboards and the skirtings! The Art Nouveau progs sound fascinating - so much ties it to Arts and Crafts - I find the timelines between movements to be fascinating.

Weather has been dire here and I'm getting fed up of leggings and jumpers as a base layer and coats indoors lol. We have a smartmeter hidden away behind a plaster bust on our sideboard (it's an LED horror that ofends my eye so much) that is currently terrifying us - even with our very minimal use. Roll on Spring.

I love your overalls too. Did you know I practically live in them? I wear the nice baggy ones. I have two pair of long-pant overalls & three pair of shorts overalls... and they're basically what I live in, with different tops. I have other clothes, of course, buried deep in my drawers & closet, to wear for such things as weddings, funerals, dinners out, etc. ... but my overalls are on the top, out front & center, and are my clothing-of-choice everyday. I'm just a hippie country gal, I guess. :-D

We have a fair bit of old glass (too much lol) and tableware which we try to use as much a possible - it always makes me sad to see the contents of some Grans china cabinet in charity shops - kept for best. Also - no doily or traycloth left behind lol. And there dear reader, is why I will never have a minimalist home LMAO.
