The Distancing Diaries - 6th & 7th July, 2021

On Tuesday morning after a soggy wander around the garden foraging for redcurrants and strawberries, I did my Wii Fit workout and swept the downstairs rugs. With a wet and dismal day forecast, Jon suggested we drove over to our favourite charity-shopping town. I was dressed in minutes!

And out came the glorious tomato dress.

Other than a shower on the way there, it turned out to be a dry, if a little breezy, day.  On the way there I asked Jon what he'd most like to find in a charity shop that day if he could organise it with the charity shopping gods to which he replied, some Clarks' Originals in my size. Obviously, no charity shopper in their right mind goes out looking for anything specific. Focus on one thing and you miss treasure but, would you credit it? The first thing Jon found had to be a pair of Clarks' Originals in a size 10.

Clarks' Originals are different to your standard Clarks' shoe. This range is based on the shoemaker's origins and features reissued designs from Clarks' past, often in collaboration with iconic labels like Harris Tweed and Levis and a lot more pricey. The original retail price for these cord desert boots was £130 (the tags were still attached) - Jon paid £5!

Pickings were slim until we got to our favourite chazza - the clearance one! The staff know us by name and let us leave all our finds behind the counter so we can rummage the rails unencumbered, bagging everything up and giving us the total when we've finished. Five-star service.

What did we find? Clockwise from the top left: 1980s mohair & wool jumper; 1960s green vinyl bag; 1980s novelty sweater; 1970s cream wool maxi coat; 1980s Thai silk jacket (inspired by Dominque's green shirt in The Serpent!); 1970s cotton velvet blazer; Hugo Boss jacket; 1980s leather biker waistcoat; 1960s gents' car coat with fake fur collar.

And there's more! Clockwise from top left: 1970s crochet longline waistcoat; 1980s straw hat by BHS Millinery; 1970s Kerena cotton velvet braided waistcoat; 1940s rayon maternity smock; 1970s sheepskin coat; 1980s suede blouson jacket; 1970s Wolseley lurex polo neck bodysuit ( mine!) and a 1960s wool hobble skirt by Dereta.

After I'd chucked our finds into the machine back at home, we had a bowl of noodles and Jon got stuck into changing Gilbert's sparkplugs. A few people assume that when social distancing comes to an end on 19th July it'll be business as usual for Kinky Melon. Wrong! Only one of our regular festivals is going ahead this year and as it isn't until September I realised that I needed to get my summery stock out and on eBay otherwise it'll have been packed away for almost two years by the time it sees the light of day again.

I had a rummage in the Kinky Shed, found out all the lightweight floaty gear and managed to find a dress I thought I'd lost in the process. After ironing everything I hammered a couple of nails into the side of the Kinky Shed, using it as a backdrop for my photos and then uplisted everything to eBay, selling three items immediately.

Jon managed to sort out Gilbert and his engine was purring like a kitten - he's a clever lad! We celebrated with an ice-cold beer before tucking into pizza and salad. After a two-day break football was back on the TV and we watched the thrilling Italy vs Spain match which went into extra time and then penalties. Once again we were emotionally overwrought by bedtime.

I woke at 5am on Wednesday morning realising it was less than 15 hours till England play Denmark in the semi-finals of Euro 2020.  I was so nervous I couldn't get back to sleep so got up and ironed some more summer stock ready to upload to eBay. I'd just finished my Wii Fit workout and had wrapped my sales when Jon emerged. After breakfast, he took Young Kim off to the garage to be tweaked before his retest. I took photos of skirts in the garden and listed them on eBay.

Jon got a taxi back and set to work scrubbing Gilbert. Bristling with nervous energy I continued rifling through the Kinky Shed, ironing and photographing stock before measuring and uploading the listings to eBay.

After a break for noodles, the garage called to say the Young Kim had passed his MOT so Jon got a taxi back over to collect him, swinging via the supermarket for some treats for later. I continued with my listing frenzy and by 4pm, I'd ironed, photographed, measured, written descriptions for & uploaded seventy garments.

I'd like to say the activity had helped settle my nerves but, as is traditional on a match day, I had to have an England football anthem disco and now we're both jittery wrecks. Even Fat Les hasn't helped. Incidentally, Paul Kaye's wearing Clarks' Originals in his spoof of The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony and rumours that the bloke in the nappy is our illustrious leader, Bojo, are completely unfounded (maybe they could remake the video if  when we win.)

It was a day of occasional sunshine, warmth and far-too-frequent blasts of torrential rain. I swear I can see the nasturtiums growing before my very eyes!

We're still rewatching The Serpent and the headscarf love continues. The silk scarf and vintage patchwork maxi skirt are charity shop finds, the cheesecloth blouse was an eBay buy last year.

Tea was quiche with salad washed down with a beer - no doubt the first of many!

Name dropping alert! Back in my corporate years, I was lucky enough to organise the catering for Gareth Southgate who, while still playing for Aston Villa, held monthly motivational talks for some of Birmingham's aspiring young entrepreneurs. I can honestly say he was one of the most courteous, genuine and loveliest people I ever had the privilege to meet and made a point of thanking every member of my team from the head chef to the kitchen porter after every event. He's an amazing man, no wonder England adores him.

Two hours till kick-off! I'm off to have a shower and get my red bikini on...let's hope it's lucky again tonight!

Come on, England!!!

  1. Thrilled to be the first comment unless I get beaten to the post. How I wish I was young and had your life. To watch sport with your partner. Sooo exciting. So loved Jon’s shoes. Have to sadly watch my pennies. Got a 3 year bill from my lawyer. It was supposed to come out of my estate. He either needs a holiday or thinks I might live a bit longer. šŸ¤£
A real joy to see you and Jon so happy. Make the most of every minute which of course you do do. xxx

    1. Yay! First comment. You were quick off the mark!
At 54 I don't get called young very often but I feel the same as I did when I was in my 20s - maybe even more so without being fettered to a career I hated!
What a pain about the lawyer's fees. It nearly destroyed me sorting out my dad's estate myself instead of using professionals but I saved so much money! xxx

  2. A quick comment before jumping in the shower and then watching the match. Garethalways comes across so genuine and turns out he is. why not name drop? You look beautiful in the ebay top and skirt - green can be a difficult colour but not on you of course. Love the finds and will prob. come back tomorrow morning to savour the post again. Come on England!! Shazxx

    1. Hello, Shaz! Gareth really is a special human and a born leader, I love how you can hear his words when the team speak.
I don't wear much green, it seems a rare thing to find in the vintage world!
Hope you and the menfolk enjoyed the match! xxx

  3. I hope you're enjoying the football - sorry to horrify you but in this house neither of us knew who England were playing until I went and looked it up, and Himself didn't even know the match was being played at Wembley!

You'll probably never speak to me again after such sacrilege!!

    1. I forgive you. Football is the only sport I ever take any interest in, even my football-hating friends watched the match last night! I'm amazed you escaped any of the build-up on the TV, I blame them for getting me so nervous. xxx

  5. lol I just can't get excited by football! I just don't get it! I was wearing Clarks Originals that day we met up but they are so uncomfortable (given away since then) I hope Jon's are comfier than mine, what a find! Bring on the silk scarves they instantly make an outfit 70s worn over the hair like you. You have such bright violet eyes - a bit Elizabeth Taylor methinks :) and wearing black (Tomato dress) definitely brings you into another dimension... Great that Gilbert got the all clear :)

    1. I rarely bother with league football but there's something thrilling about international tournament football, I just love it!
Jon's got a couple of pairs of Clarks' Originals. Tony bought him a pair for his 50th and it's taken him almost 5 years to break them in. He's been watching worn one on ebay but they sell for almost the same price as the new ones!
What a massive compliment about my eye colour, an old boss told me he gave me the job as my eyes had mesmerised him! xxx

  6. You will be shouting as loud as Philip right now, while I’ve one eye on the telly and one eye on catching up on blog posts.
I was thinking earlier whether you have masses of stuff in the Kinky Melon shed or is it steadily going down with eBay sales.
Well done Jon on the Clarke’s originals, I’ll keep a look out for them for you when I’m out and about.
Keep your cool as the football commentators are saying heehee xxx

I'd managed to get the Kinky Shed under some sort of control but all this weekly buying has it bursting at the seams again!
If you find him any Originals in a 10 he'll love you forever. Since Clarks' launched the Raheem Sterling desert boots - which sold out in an hour - I reckon every footie fan in the land will be after a pair! xxx

  10. I must admit I love clarks unstructured and I have been very lucky this time home to find to pairs in immaculate condition for under for a fiver. They are over £80 back home. And I love them so much. Plus my filas . I managed to pick up 2 pairs for less than half price in the JD sales plus they were collaborating with Coca-Cola. We only drink zero though!!
I getting ready to pack up now for me. Paul is off to see the knee surgeon at the Nuffield as he got ran over by a fork lift truck driver at. Work. He’s ok. But he is in agony with his knee. So he is going to see a surgeon his friend at work recommended.
We met Gareth Southgate at a mboro/ Nissan event. He was so polite . He even signed the kids football shirts. He asked what team we supported and when we said we don’t we live in Japan and watch the baseball he wanted to know more!! He really is so kind . Then the kids shouted go carps . He just laughed. Take care and keep safe love and huggs

    1. I got those tagged Clarks' Original mules for £3 last month and they're really comfy. Jon's got his eye on those limited edition Raheem Sterling desert boots - they sold out in a hour! I've never worn trainers, I did have a pair of Converse once but they were too flat and went back to the chazza!
Hope Paul gets on okay at the Nuffeild. I know from my chiropractic days that knee replacements aren't always successful, hence the reasons Jon lives with a Tens machine and ibuprofen gel.
Gareth Southgate is a wonderful human, isn't he? He's got time for everyone and seems genuinely interested in whoever he chats to. When he retires from football he needs to be PM! Loads of love. xxx

  11. Fantastic result for England!!!
The Clarks Originals were a lucky find. I only wish my local charity shops produced such treasures, but unfortunately most just contain overpriced tat.
I'm so happy you confirmed my suspicions about Gareth Southgate. He's a national treasure. X

Lucky Jon with his Clarks originals and clever Jon, too. I'm still waiting to hear from the garage about my car - a week later! If it was driveable I'd take it somewhere else.

I am in love with the tomato dress - it's so much fun and looks gorgeous on you. I love your headscarf Serpent look.

Last night there were cars driving and hooting their horns until 1 am in the morning - I wonder why?

How will you contain yourself until Sunday?

I'd love to know the origins of my tomato dress, it's such an odd thing to embroider on a frock!
We had fireworks late into the night each time England won, silence last night...sadly!
I hope the car got fixed in the end. xxx

Ihope you have great success with your E-bay items. E-bay is on th elist of things for my girls and I to do on the side as Ilook towards retiring and oldest looks towards going inot business for herself so seeing how you styled the garments tolist was sure useful. Well done to Jon finding his Clark's win at the shops.

Once you get into the listing process, eBay is really straightforward and it's surprising how much you can list in one session. It's the photos that take the time - and the ironing! xxx

  15. First of all, well done England for reaching the final! And to think it's all down to you wearing your lucky red bikini :-)
It's always a delight to see your tomato dress, and I'm loving the green Lottas you're wearing with it. And oh my goodness, haven't the charity shopping gods been obliging? Those Clarks originals are fabulous, and I'm glad to see that the Kinky Shed is being replenished.
I'm sure it must be weird trading at a festival after all this timen, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well. As for the Nasturtiums, I was remarking the same thing to Jos earlier today. I have to keep them in check to keep them from smothering the other plants! xxx

It's going to be so odd trading at a festival, Jon and I will have to have a trial run in the garden, it's been almost two years since we put the Gala Tent up, we've forgotten what to do! xxx

  16. I quite enjoyed that video of Fat Less - I've never heard that before. I'll have to send that to my friend Nick. I took a quick peek and see that England is going up against Italy! Go, England!

Jon's so cheeky, it's like he might have planted those Clark's Originals there just for himself! What luck is that?? I rarely find the exact thing I'm looking for when I'm at a second-hand shop! I love seeing all your purchases and also pored over all your summery listings - I'm really glad you've been able to pivot to online sales to keep the Kinky Melon ball rolling until you can go back to your usual festival circuit. I have bought two sets of concert tickets for this coming spring and it felt SO GOOD, Vix. I am excited to have all the music back!

I love your tomato dress (I'm sure I say that every time I comment on it), and it looks so good with that ginormous belt (which I covet). :) Amazing how quickly we can be ready if it's to go shopping, eh?

Good luck with the finals! That red bikini is getting a workout, ha ha! Happy weekend, my dear friend.

  21. The Charity Shop Gods clearly love Jon! Those shoes are great.

It's nice to know Gareth Southgate is a genuinely nice person - I'm always skeptical of the notion of leadership, and there are some extremely good and strong young men in the team who clearly would always have been that way, but the whole team does seem to have become a more thoughtful bunch under Southgate. A far cry from the WAG shenanigans of a decade ago.
