The Distancing Diaries - 25th & 26th May, 2021

Tuesday got off to another miserable, wet and chilly start. I did my Wii Fit workout and dusted the lounge. Jon joined me for breakfast and by the time I tidied up the utility room and sorted out my desk drawer the rain had finally stopped.

The postman came a-knocking. We've had our melamine camping cups since we bought Gilbert 15 years ago and they were 40 years old then. Jon decided that with new electrics, headlamps and a paint job he deserved something groovier & less scratched and this set of enamel mugs were recommended on one of his V Dub forums.

While I staked the sweet peas and built a new wigwam for the wild ones that had popped up in the lawn, Jon attached more camo netting to the fence.

Finally, some privacy (and a litter/fly-tipping barrier, too)! Yes, that's part of our 100m long fence, no wonder Jon was knackered when he'd finished.

In my last blog post, I mentioned that new water pipes were being installed in the avenue. The workers have had to dig up the pavement right outside our gates which means Gilbert is trapped on the drive until the work is finished - he's too heavy to risk driving over the temporary covers they've installed. Just as well we've got more than one vehicle!

I spent the rest of the day sorting out Jacob's enclosure which had become overrun with clumps of wild grass. Jacob is Hermann's tortoise and his natural habitat is the rocky hillsides, beech and oak forests of the Mediterranean so any plants we see growing wild in Greece are ideal for his habitat.

Once I'd filled the garden waste bin with clumps of grass I wandered around the garden dividing clumps of wild geraniums, herbs and ferns and replanting them in his pen, adding some interesting looking pieces of broken slate, a few wooden stumps and a generous pile of mulch.

WEARING: Indian block printed dress (tailor-made in Goa, 2017)

He's not eaten much recently as he's solar-powered and we've had no sun but, by the afternoon, it was peeping out from behind the clouds and the mercury had reached the heady heights of 14°C, so he tucked into a late lunch of home-grown lettuce, dandelions and Welsh poppies (his favourite).

Talking of poppies, this time last year our Oriental beauties had been in bloom for over a week. No such luck this year, they're tightly packed in their fuzzy jackets and are refusing to budge!

Whilst Jon was preparing tea I lay on the chaise and finished The Madness of a Seduced Woman. Many thanks to Elizabeth for recommending it, I have to confess to shedding a tear when I reached the end. It really is an extraordinary read.

Tea was a cheese toastie with salad and my pickled radishes which were delicious, even if I do say so myself! Later we watched a couple of episodes of The Antiques Road Trip as a new series had started and we were way behind followed by another episode of The Killing.

I thought I'd read all Robert Harris's books so was thrilled to spot Lustrum in the charity shop after my jab on Friday. I'm only a few pages in but it's just as absorbing as everything else he's ever written.

On Wednesday, Stephen Squirrel had me up at the crack of dawn, getting his feet tangled in my hair, yowling at the top of his voice and then chucking up on the bedroom rug. It's his 16th birthday today so I couldn't really tell him off!

After my Wii Fit workout and a wander around the garden with Frank, I decided to dye my roots as it had been 5 weeks since I'd last touched them up and I was appalled by the previous day's photos. After breakfast, Jon took Frank to the vets. He'd got a few scabs above his eyes which weren't bothering him but he'd been scratching and his bloody fur looked so awful that the neighbours had started to worry. The vet shaved his head to get a better look and concluded that whatever he'd done was healing well so no medication needed. He does look a state!

The postman called...again. This time with a vintage Indian gauzy cotton block-printed blouse I'd won on eBay over the weekend. I think it's the first one I've come across that didn't need the elastic in the cuffs replacing, it's perfect!

Wednesday was dry but really cold, I had to dash back inside to pull on my thermal leggings before getting stuck into some gardening. While Jon thinned out his carrots and planted up the lettuce, I tidied the area beneath the Wall of Mirrors, digging out the tressels from behind the shed for displaying my trailing geraniums and potting up some of our nasturtiums into chimney pots.

WEARING: Vintage Afghan dress (vintage fair, 2017), Frye Campus boots (eBay)

We've been promised heat and sunshine at the weekend, bring it on!

After a break for noodles, we drove over to Liz & Al's, went for a walk around the nature reserve they live on and had a cup of tea inside. The first time I've been in anyone's house since March 2020! We left with some London Pride and violets from their garden which I planted as soon as we got home.

Jon had fish, chips and mushy peas for tea, I had sag aloo sausages and sweet potato wedges. As it's Bin Eve, we sorted out the wheelie bins. It will be interesting to watch the bin lorry negotiate the avenue which, with all the trenches, currently resembles the Somme.

Tonight we'll be celebrating Stephen's 16th birthday with a cheeky rum or three. Cheers, old fella!

See you soon!

  2. 16 is the equivalent to 80 human years in a cat's life, the things Stephen must have seen! Smart on that camo netting, it actually allows your greenery to blend in with it.

  3. I'm quietly chuckling at the image of you lounging on your chaise while Jon sweats it out in the kitchen! I hope he peels your grapes for you too!lol Love your outdoor rug. Happy Furday Sweet Stephen. xxx

  4. Awwww... happy 16th birthday to Stephen. A testament to good care and love. I love that camo netting, Vix. When we move into town someday, perhaps you will allow me to pick your brain about that... as I'm sure we'll need it! ~Andrea xoxoxo

  5. I'm always fascinated by your meals.... I loathe cooking, have done my time cooking for the masses, so am always on the lookout for something interestingly easy - and guess where I find that? (lol) Also the Indian and vintage gear that you wear? - timeless.

  6. Happy Birthday to Stephen.
You're definitely due some warmer weather. I'm sure it will all arrive at once, as these things do.
Love the new mugs. They look perfectly retro.

  7. Aw, Happy Birthday to Stephen Squirrel! An elegant old gent in his tux. Glad Frank's scabs aren't anything serious. Your hair looks fabulous, darling! We refer to March to September as "road destruction season" here in Victoria - they are replacing all of the water mains in my neighbourhood right now, so it's rather stressful. Here's hoping that we both have our destruction over with soon.

So weird to go in someone's house, right? We're now allowed to do that too, and our Health Officer has officially said we can hug friends and relatives who've had a single shot. I can't wait to hug my mom!

  8. Happy birthday mr cat!! In japan he would have a special cake made for him. My sisters cat bit her feet the other morning so she would get up!! They are the size of milo and he is a Jack Russell crossed with a staffy ! And he is quite big. My mum isn’t pleased as they are putting in more cables for WiFi and telephones and it is disrupting their quiet neighbourhood. Man I would hate to live in a la de la neighbourhood like theirs. It’s all gated and they have security as well.
It was strange when they announced that we could hug someone it was like had the plague ended??? Paul and my dad were watching Dominic Cummings yesterday so I decided to go to another town. Which was awful full of chavs in tracksuits drinking red bull. But I did get some bits.
Tell Jon he gets a pat on the back from me for all his hard work!!! Paul is at work today and I don’t know what I am going to do . Take care and keep safe love and hugs

  9. Those enamel mugs are great. I was thinking of getting some new ones for my own camping trips. I should have been going away this weekend but, disappointingly, being under the weather has put paid to that now :( Also, I'm a lot like Jacob - solar powered!
Happy Birthday Stephen! And I hope Frank's not too upset by his lack of eyebrows. X

  10. Dear old Stephen , he must have had quite a tummy ache to tell you so loudly. Seeing I can no longer garden, I get such pleasure with all the photos you post. I had a lovely Indian man come to help set up my phone. He was very handsome with black curls. Comes from Madras and said he is from Madras where the temp. Ranges from 45 - 50 degrees. I said I thought you go to Jaipur. I hope I was right. He said his family are safe so must live in the country.
Jon did an amazing job on that fence ! Look forward to your next diary.

  11. Happy birthday Stephen, hope he has many more, 16 is a good age. The camo netting looks really good. Campervan cups are fun and very appropriate for Gilbert :) Your tailor made dress is beautiful and as a one off tailored, really special - I have promised myself that if I am lucky enough to explore beautiful places again, I will never tell myself I can't bring something pretty weird or wonderful back because it's too heavy/big/expensive or will fall apart! Self denial is banned :)

  13. The fence looks super! Good job!
Ah, your new blouse is amazing! I love it!
I remember seeing lots of Hermanns in Meteora on the Greek mainland.
My flowers are similarly being stubborn.
Ah, I do not miss clearing up cat vomit! The worst bit was treading on it with bare feet when you don't spot it and it oozes through your toes.

  14. happy birthday to stephen!!
who can tell off a cat anyway? they are innocent creatures at all.
i had to dig out the thermals again too! its soooo cold here, even for me...... this afghan dress is a big favorite of mine - love its authentic folk art vibe.
how wonderful to meet friends IN their house again - normality its on the way. just phoned with a friend who got his first jab, he says he feels better even body wise since there is light on the end of the tunnel.....
@garden: i fear we get fast into summer heat and all the flowers popping and wilting in 2 days.

  15. Hi you dear two people, two cats, one turtle,
first of all, happy birthday to Stephen and many happy returns. I love the photo where he lies in the ray of sunshine... clever cat!
You are also very clever with the camouflage net at your fence. Normally I didn't like camouflage pattern... but for this aim, it is just perfect. Well done!
Your garden is a dream and you both do so well in spending your time in the garden and the house.
In Cologne we have a lot of rain this month, it's cold and uncomfortable outside with only 11°, brrrr. But, we will see, summer is only a nose length ahead!
    Stay well, enjoy!
    Hugs from Susa from Cologne

  16. Happy 16th birthday to Stephen! It seems we are still sharing weather. If it's not raining, it's grey, miserable and cold. Definitely not end of May weather. Haven't done much gardening these last couple of days, as it felt so uncomfortable.
I'm loving the new enamel mugs, and your latest find, the vintage block-printed blouse, is a delight.
Our Oriental Poppies aren't budging either, and the California poppies I sowed a while back have all but disappeared, probably because it's been far too wet.
We haven't been back to the chazza where I spotted The Madness of a Seduced Woman, I do hope it's still there ...
The weather forecast for this weekend looks promising, I do hope they've got it right this time! xxx

  17. Happy Thurs evening Vix! and Happy birthday to Stephen. Bless him. Can't remember if I told you but we have now got Dave and he is doing so well and far more confident than Amy. I know what you mean about changing I have had a few changes myself today. One minute you're out gardening and then inside and like you tidyed my desk drawers. (know how to live hey lol) How did you feel your first time inside another house for over a year?? You have done well again on ebay with more lovely block print items. Didn't get to comment last time but you are making me itch to gt back to the chazzas that pendant was gorgeous. Poor Jacob - lets hope he gets more son soon! hugs Shazxx

  18. Happy birthday Stephen :) Who doesn't chuck up on their 16th birthday! Jacob's enclosure looks first class and well done with the fence screening.

The gauzy indian top is lovely. I have a couple that were amazing to wear in india. Washed and dried super quickly and kept me cool. Even my friend who had previously mocked the big puffy sleeves stole one for the duration. I love the smell of the fabric. They do need a repair job on them though :0

I've been meaning to ask you about your outdoor rug, which looks great by the way, but just wondering how hard wearing is it? I've had my eye on one for our patio. Stay fabulous. Lulu xXx

  19. Sending belated birthday wishes to Stephen Squirrel - he doesn't look a day over 15 ;) My lovely cat is going to be 11 later this year and I certainly hope he has many more years ahead. Poor Frank, he does end up visiting the vet quite a bit. Nice to see Jacob too!

  21. I can’t stop chuckling about solar powered Jacob. He wouldn’t be doing much chewing here this morning it’s as dull as ditchwater. Happy birthday to Stephen Squirrel. My sister in law’s cat Molly was the ripe old age of 24 before she went off to happy valley. Poor Frank, has he been scrapping with someone.
I’m really taken with your mirrored garden area. The rug is a perfect pop of colour. Adding colour to our garden is my next mission and a blue obelisk is my starting point. We’ve had it years and now needs a new setting.
Isn’t Liz gorgeous looking. I’ve started following her art page on Facebook, she is enormously talented.
Have a nice weekend you two. Much love from us xxx

  23. It's lovely to see Jacob's enclosure looking so beautiful, with decorative rocks and some mediterranean plants!. And happy birthday to Stephen, obviously he has enjoyed it since the very first moment with his favourite people!!
Loving your block printed dress, which brings some happy memories!. And looking fabulous in your kaftan, sorry that it's so cold you had to wear leggings!, so annoying spring weather!
Glad that you could visit some friends, this is something that makes me feel hopeful these days!. Wish we can travel and see friends soon!
    besos

  24. Belated birthday felicitations to Stephen Squirrel, and get-well wishes to his mate, Frank. My two old lads have also begun the round of vet visits that aging felines require to flourish. The great white floofster regards them as personal appearances for his fans; the biggest barn tom of them all, a stage for his protests against The Establishment. Both are full-time indoors cats now, the better to avoid mysterious lesions and disastrous menu selections (17-year cicadas). * Lovely to see old Jacob enjoying his enclosure!
