The Distancing Diaries - 18th & 19th December, 2020

On Friday morning, for the first time in ages I was up before the alarm - set for 6.30am - immediately going online and booking a National Trust trip for the day after Boxing Day. After my final Wii Fit session of the week I caught up with blog reading and wrapped my eBay sales parcels before joining Jon for breakfast. The supermarket delivery arrived at 9am and, after Jon had santised it and put it away, we drove into town, popping into Wilkos for some household essentials (including some new cat toys for Frank, which were very much appreciated) before visiting the clearance charity shop.

Jon scored with an Italian-made shirt printed with wading birds which, after researching the label at home, it is currently retailing at £75. There was a small stain on the front which was possibly why the original owner donated it but, as luck would have it, one of the things we'd bought from Wilko was their brilliant Oxi Plus Stain Remover and a thirty minute soak soon shifted it.

I'd not worn my embroidered green velvet dress in ages so gave it an outing on Friday. Combined with a sheepskin coat borrowed from the stockroom, a woolly pom-pom hat, wrist warmers and a quilted face mask I was almost expiring with heat in the chazza as it was an very unseasonable 15°C!

A bit more detail. My 1960s Simran, Indian velvet dress (from eBay) and the Mjus metallic snakeskin boots found in a chazza last year for a fiver.

A rather sodden Richard turned up with the post including this incredible handmade wool waistcoat with Amazigh embroidery (worn by the North African Berber tribe) to add to my collection. It had taken its time arriving, the seller posted it on 7th December.

After our lunchtime noodles, Jon nipped out to the post office and once back we got to work on our Xmas wrapping paper. Cheapskates that we are, we'd been saving brown paper from all our deliveries for months. After I'd ironed it, we used household emulsion & some Indian printing blocks to adorn it. I nicked a few of the recycled brown cardboard price tags we use for our stock and printed them, too.

I usually leave our birthday cards up for a fortnight but the vintage glass on the sideboard where I display them was looking very dusty so I took the cards down, gave the glass a wash and the surface a polish.

Don't you just love Jon's specially adapted card, For My Non Wife? He bought it especially for the dreadful pink nylon bow, tacky illustration and the awful verse. Who says romance is dead?

Having put it off for long enough, I finally opened the Xmas cards that had been accumulating in the hall since 1st December, hanging them from the twine and peg arrangement I'd bought from Poundland over a decade ago. Jon dug out some more lights and hung them up in the lounge. I really should write our Xmas cards tomorrow....

After I'd had a bath I gave the tub a scrub and filled it with our bathroom houseplants for an overnight soak. We had a buffet tea of pickles, cheeses, homemade bread, crisps and lager and spent the evening drinking rum and watching a true crime documentary we'd found on the iPlayer.

On Saturday morning, despite it being Jon's turn to get up first, I was already awake so made tea and brought it back to bed, reading until 8am. I stripped and changed the bed, loaded the washing machine and put away yesterday's laundry which had been hanging in the utility room. Breakfast was sausage and egg sandwiches. I swapped the upstairs plants in the bath for the ones on the kitchen used-to-be-a-coffee-table shelf.

The weather forecast had been dire but it turned out to be a glorious day. Jon pottered around outside, sorting out the shed and doing some work on Gilbert.

While Frank joined Jon outside, Stephen Squirrel and I remained indoors as he's an old man who needs his sleep and I was sewing something for a friend's Xmas present.

Armed with secateurs we went for a walk on the hunt for some holly with berries as the bush in our garden was looking a bit sparse. We managed to find some on some unclaimed land and filled a bag.

Today's outfit was a 1970s Interlinks Indian cotton midi dress (eBay, 2018) topped with a Banjara mirrored waistcoat bought from Colaba Causeway in Mumbai in 2016 and some whopping mirrored earrings bought from the side of the road in Goa back in February. No India this year but at least I've got my wardrobe!

We had tea, the rest of the pizza we'd started on Thursday, whilst watching BoJo's press conference. London and parts of the south of England will be in tier 4 (in effect, lockdown) from midnight. The rest of the country's - quite frankly- insane five day Xmas free-for-all has now been reduced to one day. Not that it'll make one iota of difference to us. I suspect it won't be long before the rest of us are locked down, too.

Tonight's plans involve rum and some TV, the usual 2020 Saturday night. When we finally do go back to normal I won't know how to go out!

Stay safe, keep smiling and see you soon!

  3. Love your Indian waistcoat. I don't know anyone here in New Zealand who still does Christmas cards. I mean, surely some still do, but everyone seems to doing it here via social media instead. I save wrapping paper, present bags, ribbon and cards, which I chop up and reuse as present tags.

  7. You look so lovely in these beautiful outfits, Vix, among the nicest I've seen you in and you have so many gorgeous outfits. I will be spending Christmas on my own this year as my family are some distance away and lockdown begins on Boxing Day. No point in flouting rules for one day, better to wait until it's safe to enjoy family meals together. No New Year celebrations, won't see my mammy for her birthday on January 3rd. Not a great start to 2021 but just have to keep focussing on the light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.

  20. Wearable art! The Amazigh embroidered woolen waistcoat merits a permanent display somewhere in the household. As an alternative, please think twice about wearing it anywhere near red wine or spaghetti sauce...
Jon's shirt is graphic art. It's undoubtedly his reward from the Cosmos for the de/re-constructed birthday card to his non-wife. I've bought a beautiful Jaeger faux fur coat today off eBay - far too elegant for me really lol Can't wait until it gets here - of course one in - one out, and four bags of donations to Sue Ryder on Saturday.

Saw my Mum on Saturday too - not seen her since March - very surreal to be either side of a giant polythene barrier - but wonderful none the less. I feel very lucky that she's safe and well.

I'm liking the sound of the Jaeger faux fur, I bet the quality and the cut are wonderful. Fingers crossed Mr Postman delivers it soon and you can go for a Xmas day walk in style! Well done on the donations, too. I looked at the cluttered mantelpiece in the spare room on Sunday, swept the lot into a bag and gave it to the chazza on Sunday. I shall give the place a wide berth for a while to avoid buying it back!
I'm so glad you were able to see your Mum after such a long time even though that barrier must have been weird. Is she able to have the vaccine soon? Liz's husband's mum & dad both had theirs on Monday!

  24. OOoh, I adore the heron shirt! I would have DEFINITELY picked that up for CBC if I had seen it. I bought him a beautiful organic cotton shirt with Budgies on it a few years ago and I am eyeing it up if he ever decides to get rid of it- it's MINE if so! Love your beautiful velvet dress and the waistcoat is a stunner- I have a matching bag for it that my darling girl pupil who sadly left last year (I never got to say goodbye wah!) gave to me- she gave the best presents! The new waistcoat is glorious too!
Love your strung up cards- we don't have any hooks up or anything-CBC refuses to put any up and I am DIY-challenged- really want to do that.
I probably wasn't going to still be going up to Hexham after our isolation ends because CBC is probably not recovered enough to drive but it was going to be nice to see my Mother-in-Law- we were her only visitors for Christmas- it's probably just as well, even though we have been out of circulation!

Displaying Xmas cards can be a real challenge. Mum used to get hundreds (I bet you do, too) and we used to stick them to all the doors leading off the hallway with double-backed sellotape on the backs so you could still read the messages.
Hope CBC is feeling better. xxx

All of the ensembles are Lovely and I like the idea of making your own Tags and Wrapping Paper. One year we used just plain brown bag paper but then tied it up with very colorful Yarns, it was so pretty and inexpensive. I may be duplicating as thought I had left a comment before but on checking see its not there lol. Interesting waistcoat you have there, never seen anything like it - there's a lot of workmanship in it too. Nice idea to make your own gift wrap/tags - we don't bother wrapping half our pressies at all, in case anyone wants to return for a refund lol! Son and girlfriend can't even swap pressies as in different tiers - I am just grateful me, hubby, sons all live in same house - it's going to be dismal for some folk. I am wrapping everything in parcel paper again this year, with colourful ribbons that we recycle. Good job on the stamping. What a card from Jon! I had a long standing joke with an old friend that I’d buy her a completely inappropriate, tacky card and scribble out the message on each birthday. When we were teenagers, she’d get a single card from a playing deck. One year I was particularly skint, so she got just half a card. Well, I do have three very good local friends including one with a birthday this week and I’ve been out delivering little presents plus having some long door step chats. Those fur boys look so good, healthy and happy. Oh, Baroness Trumpington, she was a scream who loved her booze, fags and betting, was very good with her bright language too, thought nothing of swearing by hand gestures when in the House of Lords.
Just listening to Bo Jo’s latest diatribe to the nation, he seems in a bit of a mess, doesn’t know what to say or do.So this is it, we have hit the bottom of the pit and are on our way to light again. Just keep on keeping well and warm Brummie Sue Xx.

I am sending good vibes to the UK - we heard about the new (and "improved") strain of COVID. Dammit, 2020, I'm done with this sh*t!

    XO

    1. That's probably why Frank's sch a regular visitor to the next door house - less chewed toys! he certainly keeps us on our toes, the fussy boy.
The news gets more and more depressing by the day - thanks for the good vibes, Sheila. Here's to a vastly improved 2021! xxx

  34. What a lovely pattern on Jon's shirt. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the stain was the reason it was donated. Some people are so lazy!
I love your wrapping! I'm working my way through stocks of old paper and when that's all used up I'll be doing something similar. We had some recycled paper on some of our presents this year and I've kept it, I hadn't thought of ironing it though - thanks for the tip!
The posy has been so slow of late, which I suppose is understandable but I had a few Christmas gifts arrive far too late to post them sadly, I'm sure the recipients will understand though.
I'm so glad the five day free-for-all was reduced to one day, and I was glad to see tougher restrictions coming in in more places recently, it seems the only option, and we won't have to wait too many months before the vaccine does it's job. We all just need to be patient for a while longer. Having our freedom restored will feel a little strange at first, I think!
