The Distancing Diaries - 5th & 6th November, 2020

Thursday morning marked the start of England's month-long lockdown, not that it'll make much difference to us, other than our weekly trip to the charity shop, life should remain pretty much the same. I was up at 6.30am, threw a load of washing in the machine, did my Wii Fit workout, hung the laundry up in the utility room, wrapped my eBay sales and joined Jon for a breakfast of fruit & yogurt whilst watching BBC Breakfast where there was still no result in the US election.

The post office thankfully remains open so Jon popped round to drop off the parcels. Just before he left he had a phone call from the joiners, letting him know that they will be starting work on our upstairs windows next week (tradespeople are allowed in our houses providing they can socially distance and wear masks). How exciting, a winter without draughts!

Meanwhile I spent the morning uploading my allocated listings to eBay and, much to my excitement, sold three items within minutes of them going live.

Before lockdown Jon had tried in vain to find some reclaimed floorboards to make into kitchen shelves and decided to make do with what he could find on the woodpile, figuring that he could always replace everything at a later date (anything to stop me nagging him). He spent the morning sawing, scrubbing and waxing in the garden.

After noodles, I planted the wallflowers Liz had brought round yesterday and gave them a good watering. While Jon drilled holes in the kitchen wall, me and the lads pottered around the garden where there's still plenty of Autumnal colour, as my collages show. Despite spending almost four hours sweeping up the leaves on Tuesday, I managed to spend another hour doing the same. It feels so good to be on top of it, a bit of control in a world that gets madder by the day.

THURSDAY: Vintage Janet Wood for Monsoon Afghan blouse (eBay), 1970s Phool block printed midi skirt (part of a suit, IG sale), Mum's Biba boots, Rajasthani enamel & brass earrings (FabIndia in Goa, 2018)

Jon managed to get two of the three shelves up and decided to call it a day. There's no rush, we've got at least another twenty-seven days of lockdown ahead of us. I grabbed my jacket, hat and gloves and we went for a bracing walk around the block, it was 10°C.

Tea was an early one, a salad eaten whilst watching BoJo's latest announcement. The lads were anxious to go out but we told them to come back quickly as it was Bonfire Night and we didn't want them to get spooked by fireworks.

On Friday I went online as soon as I got up and booked a National Trust garden visit for next week. I'd assumed that they would close during lockdown but Pam was kind enough to leave a comment on my last post to advise me otherwise. I did my final Wii Fit of the week, put away yesterday's washing and caught up with blog reading until Jon appeared for breakfast.

Jon cracked on with the shelves whilst I wrapped the latest Ebay parcels then spent the rest of the morning raking up leaves and cutting back the geraniums which I'd moved from the window boxes into the shelter a few weeks ago. Shelves in place, Jon brought me out a mug of tea and we sat in the shelter, watching the lads.

Before our noodles I hand-washed one of my vintage Phool jackets, disgracefully it was the first time I'd washed it since I'd found it in a charity shop two years ago. I seemed a shame to wash the magic of Delhi, the Taj Mahal and Jaipur off it.

After lunch we went through the boxes of stuff we'd packed away when Jon painted the kitchen, filling a box ready for the charity shop when it (hopefully) reopens in December.

We came across this photo whilst rummaging, it's from New Year's Eve, 1999 (taken in Flann O'Brien's pub in Walsall) and Jon and I are with our friends Catherine, Angela and Angela's partner Sean (Catherine's partner, Shaun was taking the photo). That fake fur cow print skirt was a TopShop second bought for a fiver off the market and I used to live in it. Sheila has something very similar in leopard print.  I'm still kicking myself for getting rid of that 1960s white leather jacket but I'm happy I ditched the serial killer fringe and natural hair colour!

Friday is houseplant day. I'd given them a good soaking last week so this time I just went round the house giving them a through misting.

I rediscovered my slightly demonic 1950s celery pot whilst we were rummaging through the boxes, combined with one of my tiniest terracotta pots & some rooted Zebrina cuttings I repurposed him into a makeshift plant holder (we both hate celery with a passion!)

Ann & Jos bought us this wooden stand with two Belgian beer glasses when we met up last year, I thought it would make a far better looking propagation station than the old pesto jar I was using.

The Devil's Ivy has grown so long that I've had to remove it from the used-to-be-a-coffee-table shelf in the kitchen and hang it above my PC in the middle room from a macrame plant holder I'd found in the clearance charity shop last year for £1, looped over itself several times as it was in danger of getting burnt by the radiator.

Liz made us the plant holder on the left hand side of the bathroom picture using an old leather jacket and some garden twine, I was so impressed I made myself a few more (although mine aren't as professional). Our friend Tina grew the Monstera from a cutting, it had one big leaf when she gave it us a couple of years ago, I've repotted it five times since then, it just can't stop growing!

FRIDAY: It's the Tarantella suede waistcoat and devore bellbottoms again, this time worn with a vintage Jeff Banks W1 blouse  and an Indian tribal pendant (both from car boot sales)

We went for our daily walk around the block, counting five discarded face masks and a pair of plastic gloves in the fifteen minutes we were out. What is it with people?

Once back I brought my jacket in from the line, as damp as when I put it out, and hung it up in the utility room. Jon ground beans and made us a posh coffee and I spent the rest of the afternoon catching up with comments and writing a blog post.  I always drink my posh coffee from a posh vintage mug, it makes it taste better, this one is the Jupiter design by Portmerion.

Tea was pizza with sweet potato chips accompanied by a glass of wine - aren't I good, drinking from the same bottle all week! We won't mention the rum.

The skies are currently alive with the sound of exploding gunpowder and the lads aren't at all happy. I've drawn the curtains and we'll all adjourn to the lounge shortly, Spooks and rum are on the agenda for us, the cats have had Go Cat biscuits, cat milk, mackerel, chicken and prawns...spoilt, aren't they?

Stay safe & see you soon!

  1. "serial killer fringe and natural hair colour".... this made me laugh out loud, Vix! :-D I loved the picture but I do love your hair & color now better. I still think you looked rather glamorous & grand back in 1999. Lots better than I did back then, for sure. Let's see... back in 1999 I was the homeschooling mother of a 2yo, 12yo, & 17yo... and weighed nearly 60lbs more than I do now. There's some things I'd like to revisit in 1999 but for the most part I think I'll stay right here in 2020... even with all the wrinkles & warts the world has in it. ~Andrea xoxo

  3. Oh, your poor lads, all that banging from the fireworks must've terrified them. Vizzini was startled a few times on Hallowe'en here - bunch of yahoos in our 'hood.

I love that picture of you from 1999 - what a bunch of fresh-faced kids you are! I didn't recognize you! Didn't we all have that fringe then?? Love the cow skirt (thank you for the shout-out!), and that white leather jacket.

I see so many discarded masks, even cloth ones! Jeez, people! Your outfits are fabulous - I love seeing you in trousers! I slightly regret that I gave away my purple suede vest (nearly identical to yours) a few years ago. I love all the pictures of your beautiful flowers (and of course, the cats!).

    Have a wonderful weekend, Vix!

You're right, the serial killer fringe was a bit of an Indie girl thing back in the day. I hope that white leather jacket is having a new lease of life with another vintage loving girl somewhere in the UK. Same with your suede vest - I had a purple one, to and sold it when I was short of cash thinking I'd soon find another, I still haven't! xxx

  4. Hey Vix, I completely agree, coffee is much tastier in a vintage mug!

The plants in your house and garden are looking marvellous. I used to have the same brown pot that your Monstera is living in! (My old guitar teacher, who was like Jazz Club man from the Fast Show – he used to frequently turn up late to lessons because he was so incredibly chilled - had a whole lofty, high ceiling flat full Swiss Cheese Plants- they were huge!)

Haha, I wouldn’t recognize you from that old photo. I think we’ve all been through a dodgy fringe phase at some point or other ;) Lulu x

I like the sound of your guitar teacher, the BBC need to put The Fast Show on the i-player. My Grandma was a whizz with cheese plants, Stonecroft used to be full of them when she lived here.
How funny about the matching pot, a neighbour left it on our doorstep years ago, she thought it was right up my street and I hate to turn anything free down! xxx

Your posh mug is indeed lovely but that wine glass!!! Now that's luxurious.

Masks and gloves all over the street here too. Shouldn't be shocked-it is better than finding spent condoms . I don't know what's wrong with people either :)

  6. I still have a dodgy fringe! Not only admiring your outfits that you're modelling in the garden, but also the garden itself. You can see the results of your hard work with the cobbles and edging as well as the plants. Just watched the Last Leg US Election Special. I love Adam Hills. 9. I so love those Biba boots of your Mum's. She had great taste, too, obviously. Our family dog is a small papillon- pomeranian. With giant butterfly ears, of course. Terrified of fireworks, naturally. On November 5th night she crept into the baby's room and "guarded" her from those fireworks, all night. SWeet as.

  10. I think my favourite colour combination is purple and green, your Tarantella waistcoat looks amazing with the blouse. Your houseplants make your home look so bohemian, I am impressed you grew your monstera from a small cutting. I am always on the look out for macrame plant hangers but you just can't find them round here - I live in hope, mostly on ebay they look like Chinese import jobs. It was nice to have a reminder of India, I will have to dig my pics out, it's all we have at the mo but I so hope we can travel there again. Goes without saying I love your Anokhi jacket :) have a great weekend.

  11. You made me laugh about the posh coffee beans. I cannot live without a good cup of coffee first thing on a morning. I love going to the department store near us and picking up a bag and it’s so cheap as well. I have one of those drip thingies it always tastes better.
Mum said old Joe was running up and down the living room on Thursday when he heard a bang as if was trying to find it!! strange creatures dogs. And the local council estate near them decided to put on their own firework display nice!! I am so glad I don’t have to put up with that anymore!!!
In japan it is illegal to buy fireworks and you can only go to displays in the summer which are awesome and they last all night and you take a picnic as well. I love your houseplants, I had a monstera until light fell on it and broke it. So bye bye monstera and they are so expensive as well. Take care and keep safe love and huggs

What a funny dog trying to get to the fireworks, ours are okay with the flashing ones, it's the whizz bang ones they hate. Frank was in a suitcase last night and Stephen was wrapped in a curtain. I'm glad it's raining tonight so they can't let off any more.
I wish they'd make fireworks illegal here and just allow public displays. The Brit public, booze and gunpowder is just asking for trouble. Much love. xxx

  12. Your plants look so healthy. No fireworks display here this year and certainly no-one in my village setting off their own fireworks. 14. There are some lovely photos of your flowers, the lads and your houseplants. Our house is a tip at the moment because we've had most of the ceilings re plastered, it's taken me 15 years to finally get it done. It's so nice to look at a beautiful home! Good luck with the window replacement and I hope kgs not too messy. We have a weekend of painting ut nothing else to do so it's actually quite good.
Ziggy hates fireworks too, they terrify him and lime you we shut the curtains and put the telly on.
I always think of you as brown/black haired and it looks great on you but I think your own colour looks lovely too.

  15. The house plants are wonderful and plenty! The flowers from your garden are also lovely and again you still have plenty in bloom. I bought some wallflowers from where I get our coal from - 3 x bunches for 1.00! As I type OH is out in the garden giving it its winter tidy up. Our garden is too small for a greenhouse so we can't plant seeds and cuttings until the warmer weather. We will put some of the plants we bought from nurseries in the last lockdown to overwinter in the alley way; where they get some shelter.

Fab outfits and the Phool jacket is gorgeous; there's no need to wash jackets frequently; I think the last time I washed my denim jacket was about two years ago.. and talking of jackets it was a shame you didn't hang on to that white leather jacket but how often do we say that about things we used to wear? You both look so young in that photo and I would never have guessed your natural colour was so light!

One good thing about not owning any pets is that we don't have to worry about Guy Fawkes night...

We're working our way through Walter Presents - what a God send it is!

  20. Remember, remember...etc., but I've never quite decided whether the celebration is about the attempt to blow up the parliament or the foiling thereof. ? American cats follow a routine similar to your lads' on the Glorious 4th: an early buffet, a quick trip to the facilities, and a strategic retreat under the bed. Actually, that's my own plan for the evening. We've had quite a week here, speaking of politics and fireworks...

  22. What a great few days we’ve had weather wise here in the West Midlands,I spent most of yesterday outside, I freshened up the soil in my four Christmas cactus plants then gave them a good watering. At one time outside I was having a chin wag with a friend who bought a jar of homemade marmalade round and I gave her some books round here we are all just trying to keep each other’s spirits up, one way or another. Talk about big bangs, we’ve had fireworks going off every night this week round our way, even through the Service of Remembrance last evening which I didn’t think was very nice. I expect your fur boys have gone into hiding? One of your followers recently said how they enjoyed reading everyone else’s comments, and I have to add, so do I, like me Vix, you are a glass half full and not a glass half empty person. I'm also annoyed by discarded face masks, they are not only litter but also they present a risk of infection. You're so much more of a brunette, even seeing the photos I can't imagine you as a blonde. The only clothes I can remember from 1999 was a pair of grey satin trousers, they used to stain terribly - something I only learnt after a night out at a club when I'd been leaning on a wet table - my backside was covered in very obvious curious stains, I was mortified.
Isn't it funny that things taste better out of a favourite mug?
