The Distancing Diaries - 24th & 25th October, 2020

Jon was up first on Saturday morning, he made tea and brought it back to bed where we lay and read until just gone 8.30. After he'd gone downstairs to make a start on the breakfast I stripped and changed the bed, hung up the tea towels I'd left on an hot eco wash the night before and reloaded the machine. After our sausage sandwiches I tumble-dried the bedding and caught up with blog comments while Jon did a bit of work on Gilbert before the rain arrived.

The postman arrived with a multi pack of biker snoods, Jon's go-to choice of face covering. We were weeping with laughter when he tried them on.

With no prospect of photographing stock or playing in the garden I did some housework instead (in my tatty gardening dress), cleaning our bedroom, the spare bedroom, the bathroom, the landing and the stairs which took me the best part of the day.

I've never been one for cleaning but, since lockdown I love how therapeutic it is. The almost zen-like calm I get from filling a bowl with hot soapy water and scrubbing away with a stiff wooden brush, flicking away the cobwebs with my feather duster, beating rugs and polishing surfaces with a soft yellow duster and the delicious smelling Lord Sheraton's beeswax wood balsam, accompanied, as always, by 6Music.

After a bit of self-care - stripping off last week's nail paint, cutting my nails & epilating my legs followed by a long soak in the bath - we had tea, grilled Halloumi with potato lattices, roasted peppers, red onions and tomatoes and a bottle of beer. We'd been too involved in Spooks the previous evening to watch Gardener's World so we caught it on catch-up before watching another couple of episodes of Spooks (accompanied by a few rums). Although the growing season is over I left a few of my houseplants to soak overnight in the sink in the utility room before going to bed.

The clocks went back at 2am on Sunday morning but unfortunately nobody had told the lads who tried their utmost to get us out of bed at 6am. I resisted until 7am, then went downstairs, fed and let them out and brought tea back to bed where stayed until I'd finished my book.

Jon made fried eggs with grilled mushrooms served on a slice of toast for breakfast which we ate whilst watching The Andrew Marr Show. I swapped the houseplants over and painted my nails Barry M's Black Cherry.

Once we were dressed we drove to the clearance charity shop, offloading another sack of donations. We spent a good forty minutes rummaging and dodging the scutters who seem to think it's quite acceptable to wear a face mask like a chin strap and stand far too close. We popped to Wilkos but were very disappointed to see that the plants had been removed from sale and replaced by aisles crammed ceiling high with garish plastic tat (ie., Halloween and Xm** stuff). I was hoping to pick up a raspberry bush as Monty had said it was the ideal time to plant them but left disgruntled and empty-handed. Not to worry, we hadn't done too badly in the chazza.

I'd only mentioned on Friday's blog post about how most National Trust visitors wear a uniform which, more often than not, includes a knitted bobble hat but this Firetrap Black Label cable knit one will be perfect for working outdoors in the winter (£1). I loved the lurex stretchy wristbands on these new with tags Faith gloves, which don't look quite as violently pink in real life (also £1). The vintage tooled navy leather belt fits Jon perfectly and goes with last week's Jeffrey west boots (50p).

More new with tags stuff...people are so wasteful. The shorts will go in Jon's holiday bag ready for next time we go away (£2) and the paisley print slim fit "York" shirt by Hawes and Curtis of Jermyn Street originally retailed at £55 but Jon paid £3.

I'm long sighted and whilst my distance vision is perfect, close-up I'm as blind as a bat. I can't be arsed wearing reading glasses when I'm shopping, a mask is enough to contend with, so I never read the manufacturer's labels, always going by how something feels. It must work, I've yet to come home with anything from Primark. The bags in the clearance shop are mostly poor quality and plastic but this big navy mock-croc tote bag felt like leather, had a really satisfying magnetic closing mechanism and brass feet.

Once I got home I put my glasses on, read the label and did a bit of googling. Turns out my £3 buy is a leather Quincy bag by Victoria Beckham and originally retailed at £1045. The exterior is perfect, the inside is a bit grubby but nothing a damp cloth can't handle. Madness!

Sunday's outfit was a vintage block printed dress and quilted waistcoat (both by Phool and bought from/swapped with fellow vintage traders), my new favourite Sanita clogs and a Gujarati amulet pendant.

After a bowl of noodles I spent the rest of the afternoon catching up with blogland and wrapping eBay parcels ready to drop off at the post office after our National Trust excursion tomorrow. In addition to the stuff I've already shown you, Jon managed to find a decent wooden picture frame for £1 in the charity shop and framed the Indian matchbox covers I'd bought from eBay last month. It's currently being weighed down with a pile of books so I'll have to show you when it's in situ.

Tea was half a Morrison's veg pizza with oven chips. Tonight we'll be catching up with Michael Palin and his Travels of a Lifetime as well as another episode (or two ) of Spooks. I don't know about you but this extra hour makes the day seem endless, I'll be ready for bed by 9pm!

Stay safe and see you soon!

  1. Wow! Vix that bag was a great find-I believe it is the Universe sending you a gift for being so kind sharing a window on your life with us especially during these weird times. And Jon's biker mask should keep unsavoury types away.I've got a couple several years ago from outdoor shop and I paid well over £10 each-a grey patterned and a scull and roses which I wear sometimes x

Jon loves those biker masks, he's got a couple of the more expensive ones but was happy to find a cheap multipack, he always wears one round his neck just in case! xxx

  2. It does seem to take a while to readjust to daylight saving. I'm with you on the madness of people just buying and not using - I think it's so wasteful too. Haven't been charity shopping for quite a while but recently I did - 2 very flattering summer tops at $1 each, and a very classy and feminine navy dress for summer, from my favourite brand, and usually too expensive to even think of buying. Was so stoked.

    1. It's funny, it's only an hour but seem so disruptive. I don't like it being dark at 5.30pm.
Isn't it awful to buy and not to wear? Surely if you bought something because you loved it then you'd wear it straightaway or send it back if it was an online purchase that didn't it. It does seem wasteful.
Those sound like great scores from the charity shops. x

  3. I didn’t know whether to laugh or shriek with horror at Jon’s mask. I’d love to know the story behind how that bag ended up in the chazzer.
So nice to have a tour round your house again. Shame we can’t pop by for real. Mind you I won’t be going anywhere now as I’ve twisted my ankle and am laid up.
Looks like I’m truly housebound now - yikes xxx

Helen, a lovely lady I got to know from Vintage Village thought that maybe the bag was a gift from an ex and maybe the owner didn't want to be reminded of him and just chucked it out. If only things could talk!
I'm so sorry about your poor ankle and do wish you could come for a visit again - I'd love to see your newly covered sofa in real life. xxx

That was a great score with the Radley bag.
I bumped into a lady I know from charity shopping when the shops had reopened and she said that we need to take our time and enjoy every minute we get to spend rummaging as the chance to do it could be snatched away at any moment. Wise words. xxx

    1. And then gives it away to a charity shop? Crazy, isn't it? It's fantastic quality and a really classic design, it's not like it could go out of fashion. Oh well, their loss and all that!
I can't believe how much satisfaction I get from cleaning although I've always enjoyed laundering clothes. Whether I'll still be saying that when I'm able to go to festivals and have all-dayers in pubs, I'm not too sure! xxx

  7. Who needs a costume for Hallowe'en when there are bikers' masks like Jon's?! (What a perfect gift for the teen lad who hates wearing a sissy mask!) The price on the Victoria Beckham bag is almost as scary.
Do, please, tell us more about the vest top adorning the dress form. Beadwork? Ribbonwork?

    1. They're a great idea. Jon wears one around his neck whenever he goes out, warmth and protection in one.
I can't get my head round spending over £1000 on a bag and then getting rid of it.
The garment on the dress form is the bodice from an Afghan Kuchi dress, unfortunately the maker was a lot bigger than me so it needs a radical rethink before I can use it to make a dress. It's a mixture of everything. I'll take a detailed photo for my next post. xxx

Your block dress is gorgeous, as well as the house dress... If I met Jon wearing this mask on a dark street, I'd be spooked out of my mind! Perfect for Halloween though. Haha!

Your $1000 find is pretty cool!

I used to see housework as a chore in the days BC (before Corona) but without the cycle of buying, laundering and preparing for fairs to fill my days I'm loving it. It used to be about the acquisition of quirky, secondhand stuff, now it's about enjoying what we already own and caring for it. I do think investing in some good old fashioned brushes, proper old fashioned dusters and chemical-free cleaning stuff makes the process even more enjoyable. xxx

  11. Those are great finds, the bag...wow, that's amazing. It's hard to understand all the crap for Halloween and Christmas. So.much waste. It makes me cross as do those mask on chin people. Your house looks beautiful, I'm inspired by your cleaning routine. I'm on half-term from work so am sorting and storing summer clothes, moving on bags of outgrown stuff. And trying to instigate a cleaning routine for my children to join in with! I have a pair of sanita boots. I found them in a charity shop 18 months ago. The woman in there was very reluctant for me to buy them! Maybe she had her eye on them herself. X

You've chosen the perfect week for swapping over clothes, it's gone really cold and Wintery here.
That was a brilliant scare with the Sanita boots, no wonder the worker was a bit miffed for having missed them. I can't believe how warm & cosy my feet feel in them, they're like wearing slippers! xxx

  13. I don’t like cleaning either lol. But I decided to declog the bathroom fan with the dyson. Except it didn’t work and I had to use lights toothbrush, man was it mucky!! but I gave it a good clean, and then it promptly broke! Good job Paul was washing the parts. He just laughed gave it a wiggle and then haypresto it worked!! Expect I have one part left over hiding in the bathroom drawer so he doesn’t see it!
I don’t mind cleaning windows but ekk my figure collection would take days!! And it scares me. Love the gloves but alas I am a fingerless mittens child as I am weird that way. I am also a beret girl and own lots of happy colours.
Love the bag. Your right what my mum finds me makes me want to shout you wasteful beggar!!! Sell it on eBay and make a bit of cash! I got a pair of toast trousers at work new with tags 10er they would have cost £150!! WTF!!! come on folks. And they are beautiful and thick.

    1. I always used to have far better things to spend my time on - all dayers in the pub or charity shopping - but in these strange times I love keeping our house clean and tidy. No vacuum cleaner in our house, it's a stiff broom or the carpet beater.
I love my beer mittens (ie., fingerless gloves and wristwarmers) at festivals, I can take customer's money and hold onto my glass but for walking in the cold it's gloves or old school mittens! I look like a nutter in a beret, i think you need short hair or a fringe.
The bag is fab, at least the person who donated it had used it but still spending that much money on something and giving it away, it's totally mad!

    1. TK Maxx used to donate a lot of unsold stock to another of the charity clearance shops we visit, you could understand why most of it had been donated, it was always so ugly!
The gardening dress is so warm and great for gardening at this time of year, at least it would be if it ever stops raining!
Jon always wears one of those biker's masks around his neck when he goes out (a lot of bolkes prefer them to the traditional face masks, no stress on the ears) he pulls them up over his nose when he's shopping. xxx

  31. I shouted out loud (in my quiet office) at your deal on the Victoria Beckham bag! I also "shop by feel" and I'm astounded at how many things that just leap into my hands that way. I love your toque (rhymes with "kook") and your PANK gloves. I find patterned shirts like that frequently for L as well - I guess not all gents are as bold as ours in their sartorial choices!

I was rather started by Jon's new scarf! Those "gaiter"-style masks are not approved here for wear, unfortunately.

I suspect that many of those "new with tag" items in thrift stores are things that were ordered online and the sizing is incorrect. It's easier for people to donate than to return them.

Love your dress (both of them!), and seeing all the pics of your cool home. I loathe cleaning and dusting, and happily support local cleaners to do it for me!

Our time change is this weekend, and it always messes with Vizzini - he will be begging for treats and hounding us for his morning food an hour early. I hope your furry lads are doing okay - no pics of them for a while!

I'm drooling over the egg/mushroom toast. I LOVE mushrooms, but L won't touch them - I cook them up separately for all of our meals, including separate sauces for spaghetti, and divvying the pizza down the middle.

    Have a good week, Vix!

    1. I suspected you shopped by feel as well. It makes me giggle at women who keep getting their phones out and typing in the maker's labels, by the time they've worked out if it's a posh label or not they've missed half a dozen other bargains!
I did think PANK when I spotted those gloves.
I think you're right about the online shopping. It makes me laugh that people order more to qualify for free shipping and never wear them. It would work out cheaper just to pay the £3.95 postage and the single item they liked.
My brother calls on the local cleaners to sort his house out too, he's happy and so are they.
These pesky cats of ours! It's been raining continuously all day and our two keep yowling at the door every five minutes just so they can check that it's still too wet to go out!
Eat the mushrooms, L - you're missing the best bit of the meal! xxx

  32. It's extraordinary what people will pay for a designer label. Perhaps they bought the latest season on to replace it! I love cleaning and find it very therapeutic [apart from the oven which I don't enjoy]. I am hoping that if I persist with the garden next year I might find the same quality....at the moment all that happens is that I get grumpy very quickly! Arilx

    1. These people live in a different world, don't they? Why on earth didn't the previous owner put it on ebay and donate the money to a charity of her choice rather than donate it to a shop that prices everything at £3 or less?
Cleaning is such a great way to switch off, weeding and raking have the same effect on me as well. xxx

  33. Afternoon Vix, late to the party but just wanted to say I agree with those that say what goes around comes around and if anyone deserved that beautiful bag at such a bargain price it's you!! You have put so much effort in all this year blogging away and cheering all of us up! How 'bout next time you go to the hairdressers Jon goes with you with that mask at the ready ;) All your rooms are gleaming and look awesome. Your new Sanita clogs look great with the block print dress! Is the matchbox collection going in the kitchen? It looks great Shazxx ps I'v had that before too sometimes the volunteers I've come across in the Chazza's don't hide their disappointment when you buy something they have missed however all of them do a great job so we will let the one or two snooty ones off hey xx

    1. Oh Shaz, you are kind, in fact everyone who comments is so lovely, I'll be getting a massive head!
I'm loving having a clean house although I'm getting really twitchy looking out of the window and being unable to tackle those bloody leaves! Come on rain, give us a break!
Yes, the matchbox covers are going in the kitchen. You know me so well!
A charity shop I used to visit had a policy that volunteers weren't allowed to buy anything until it had been on the shop floor for 48 hours, which I suppose was quite sensible as I've known a few people only work in charity shops for first dibs on the donations but if looks could kill when you bought anything they'd had their eyes on...ouch! xxx

  34. Lordy I'd love to know the back story to that VB bag, what a find for you! I have to be in the right frame of mind to clean but there is something so satisfying when you have finished.

    1. I know, it seems a terribly expensive (and lovely) thing to donate to the cheapest charity shop in town! Isn't it lovely to have a clean room to relax in? It's like being in a different house. xxx

  35. The original price on that Victoria Beckham bag is insane! Excellent thrift score. I have occasionally googled a designer name on something I've found at a thrift store while I am in the store - I've found a couple of older things that would have cost quite a bit when they were new but nothing with that kind of price difference.

I wish I could get as motivated and enthused about house cleaning as you do.

  36. You call it your tatty gardening dress but you still look stylish in it. I look like a scarecrow when gardening.
It does feel good to get stuck into the housework doesn't it? My only problem is I'm trying to declutter but run out of steam and end up with random piles of stuff everywhere. I'll get there in the end, it just a good job we're not currently getting many visitors!
That bag - who would spend £1045 on it in the first place? But what a fortuitous find, it does look like a really nice bag (still not worth the original pricetag though).
Your oven chips look so much tastier than mine ever do, are they from Morrisons too?
I'm just about used to the darker evenings, but wouldn't it be nice if they just left the flippin' clocks alone?
    xx
