The Distancing Diaries - Day 148 & 149

On Saturday Jon was up first and brought mugs of tea back to bed where we lay and read. Jon got up first to start on breakfast, I finished Cathedral of the Sea before stripping and changing the bed and loading the washing machine.

By the time we'd eaten our veggie sausage sandwiches (Morrison's The Best "Ultimate Meat Free Sausages", they're delicious) the washing was ready to hang out on the line. While I weeded between the cracks in the patio Jon continued with the job he'd started yesterday by filling & painting the bay window sills

Much better! We had had Stonecroft's exterior painted by professionals in June, 2017 but as the house is south facing the sun (when we get it) doesn't half take its toll on the paintwork.

Liz's mum bought us this lovely blue glazed strawberry planter many years ago, as the house leeks are reproducing like mad I thought I would make a pretty new home for some of them.

I couldn't wait for a special occasion to wear my latest vintage Anokhi skirt, waking up alive is reason enough.

WEARING: 1970s Anokhi maxi skirt with block print border & Afghan Kuchi earrings (eBay), crochet halterneck (bought from the roadside in Goa, 2016), vintage Polaroid sunglasses (car boot sale)

Contrary to expectations, Saturday was warm and sporadically sunny.

In the mood for some outdoor sewing I took up another of my vintage Anokhi maxi skirts which took a couple of hours as again, I'd had to add an interior pleat and hand stitch it both inside & out, which wasn't a problem, it was lovely with the lads keeping me company.

I laughed out loud when a friend shared the picture on the left on Facebook. Frank has decided that Jon's favourite deckchair is also his favourite and whenever Jon dares to sit on it Frank gives him such a tragic look that he has to surrender and sit on the floor.

Tea was another quiche with salad, a tiny carrot each from our pathetic (but delicious) harvest and our homegrown new potatoes which, after boiling in their skins, Jon tossed in olive oil, sea salt and Moroccan seasoning and finished off in the oven.

Entertainment was provided by Monty Don and the gardens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, the USA, China & Japan and a few glasses of rum.

At 5am on Sunday morning (day 149) I was awoken by the sound of rain pitter-pattering against the window panes. I ignored it for as long as I could before getting up, letting the lads out and taking mugs of tea back to bed, making a start on my latest charity shop book.

Jon got up at 8am. I epilated my legs, tidied the bedroom and joined him downstairs in the kitchen. We both had an egg on toast (mine poached, Jon's fried) and watched Beechgrove, Scotland's answer to Gardener's World. As the rain looked set to stick around, Jon assembled all he needed to paint the skirting boards he'd fitted in the kitchen on Thursday while I cleaned the lounge.

After a blog catch-up I cleaned the spare bedroom and then dragged out the computer desk in the dining room downstairs and tackled all the dust that had accumulated behind it.

I was able to take advantage of a pause in the rain for an outfit and nail paint of the week photo (Barry M's Passionfruit).

My hair is slathered in conditioner ready for its weekly wash later. I'm wearing a charity-shopped vintage Rumak cheesecloth midi dress, Lotta clogs, Afghan Kuchi earrings from eBay and the belt I bought last week.

Yesterday's paint had dried so we reinstated the window boxes.

I bought the window box in the centre back in 1999 where it sat on the outside sill of our previous mid-Victorian terraced house until we bought Stonecroft & moved into in 2005. Impossible to find in any garden centres back than, I'd bought it from a London-based design company I'd seen advertised in Living Etc., an interiors magazine I used to be addicted to. The other window boxes came from Sainsbury's supermarket in 2006 and had been reduced to £5 as the trend for galvanised metal was apparently over (like I've ever worried about having a fashionable garden).

Stephen Squirrel's into his second week of thyroid tablets. He seems less mithered and a lot more relaxed. He's spent the best part of the day asleep on our bed and who could blame him? Its an effort to go outside on a damp & miserable 17°C day.

After noodles Jon fitted the final skirting board, the tricky one on the particularly wonky wall behind the kitchen cupboard. I thought it best to keep a safe distance and disappeared upstairs to make a few more face masks with the charity shopped garments I'd bought a couple of weeks ago. As always I listened to 6Music whilst sewing. A blissful afternoon of everything from vintage Bollywood & Nina Simone to psychedelic rock & Ethiopian jazz.

Tea is halloumi with roast vegetables and the smell of it cooking is making me even hungrier than I am already. Tonight we'll be watching a bit more Monty Don, we loved revisiting some of the great gardens of India with him the other night - that's us messing about in Agra Fort back in 2018 (HERE).

Stay safe, thanks for reading and see you soon!

PS I'll catch up with blog comments shortly, I'm behind yet again! Done!!

As soon as that chap appeared on Gardener's World Jon said, "No, the roof won't take it!" Spoilsport!
I'm already pondering what to put on today, the weather isn't the greatest this morning. I don't think I'll be doing much playing in the garden!
      Have a happy Monday. xxxx

  5. Fascinating how your summer is fine weather, then rainy. Beautiful weather here at the moment, very cold though. Auckland has now been ordered to stay home again. IT has reappeared. Brings a peace to the suburbs without all of that traffic, though. Are most of your ethnic clothes, vintage? I absolutely love them.

Most of my ethnic clothing is vintage although I do buy a few new pieces in India every year. xxx

It’s so nice to see your lovely outfits Vix. Again me and Philip commented on how dull people are. I was putting petrol in the car and looked round to see five boring cars either black or silver and all the owners dressed equally as blandly. 1. Thanks, Lynn! Hopefully we got away with using matt black on the sills as opposed to gloss, I'm hoping the window boxes hide them.
What is it with people, if they're not wearing boring clothes , they're painting their houses grey and driving in bland coloured cars. Keep being a flamingo in a world of pigeons! xxx

  8. LOVED your cheesecloth midi dress and your perfectly matched accessories. The house just keeps improving, you and Jon are doing amazing things to both house and garden. Weather not great here either - and on the chilly side! I've had two unproductive days where I just felt incredibly weary. It did, however, give me a great excuse to watch Episodes 3 and 4 of The Bridge this afternoon (managed 1 and 2 live last night). I watched it when it first was broadcast and I'm enjoying it just as much on its second run. Brilliant stuff. Had a chuckle at your Agra Fort photo.

It's another miserable day here, cold, damp and chilly. It was only just getting light when I got up this morning.
The Bridge is the best thing ever, I'm tempted to rewatch it all from the start, too. xxx

Big fan of vegetarian sausages - I buy a local brand and they have fennel in them which makes them so yummy. I love your new Anokhi skirt with the yellow bikini top! So pretty! Your dress is lovely too, particularly with that bright red-orange nail polish colour.

Glad to hear Stephen is doing better, and Frank, what a scamp! Stealing Jon's chair! They always seem to find the best seats - mine is sitting on the deck chair right now, the coolest spot in the house.

Happy week ahead to you, dear Vix!

Veggie sausages are the best especially with good bread and French's mustard.
That Anokhi skirt is such an unusual colour combination, I looked at it for ages when I saw it on eBay as I was undecided but in real life it's like Summer in skirt form.
Frank is such a naughty boy and has a habit of looking so sad and pitiful we daren't argue with him. xxx

  11. Happy Sunday. You may be happy to know you influenced me dressing in something more than just a t-shirt and shorts yesterday for the baby shower, and wore a sweepy pia dof white linens trousers and a geometric print black sleeveless tunic. I wore some dangly silver earrings, but dar if forgot to paint either my finger or toe nails. I think I may tonight. The only veggie sausages I ever had did not taste very good to me. My daughter bought the on accident-thought they were vegan, but they had egg whites. My husband loved them though.

Veggie sausages are very hit and miss, I've tried so many varieties over the years! xxx

  12. Your windows are gorgeous -- inside and out!

I was wondering if the veggie sausages you get on your side of the world are loaded with sodium like they are in the US. I'd eat more of them but the salt content is through the roof.

Now I have been epilating for ten years or so now. I will never go back to shaving!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you! They will need replacing eventually but Jon'll keep patching them up in the meantime.
I've just checked the packet the sausages came in, a serving of two contain 4% of your daily sodium requirement, the other brand we use contains 3%. That sounds pretty low.
      Epilating is the best! x

      Delete
    2. That is a great sodium level. In the US you would see five or six times as much. It's not unusual for the sodium to be 20% or more!

I do hope you keep those windows as long as possible. We have replaced old windows in the past and the new versions are not nearly as nice.

We tried natural on the plants but it didn’t work. So we are trying something else. That skirt looks awesome. We bought some new potatoes a tiny bag cost us, £3.00!! But they were nice.

I'm glad you got a replacement for your tee shirt on eBay. Liz managed to find an unworn pair of her favourite ever shoes which she'd worn out after 20 years of wear. Don't you love it when that happens?
New potatoes are the best and worth the occasional splurge. Next time stick one in a dark cupboard and get it to sprout and plant it, it worked for us!

I am searching out heavier skirts for the Autumn/Winter now-if only we could hop on a flight to India and raid an Anokhi. p.s. I remember you saying you cut your recent belt as a little long- I found a Primark ponytail band slid down the length of the belt is invisible and perfect to hold that annoying bit that has to be tucked in - hope that's useful for future belts that don't behave!

  20. Your gardening experiments continue to inspire and entertain me, and remind me of family stories long forgotten. My paternal grandfather was a plumber by trade who was also an inventor (limited slip differential for rear wheels of early trucks). Jon would have found his flexible metal "woodwork" useful as skirting on that wonky wall.
Grossvater also experimented in hydroponics. He mounted a descending Z-track of guttering on a south-facing wall of his shop, filled the guttering with a mixture of sawdust and compost, and planted lettuces. At the top of the downspout feed, he installed a bucket with holes piercing its bottom, into which he deposited fertilizer (e.g., fish meal, chicken yard dirt) and ran the hose to water when needed. Perhaps this might work for your strawberries?

  23. I keep getting behind with blog comments too. I've really no idea where the time goes lately. We had Dove Cottage's façade (woodwork, guttering and white bands between the brickwork) painted professionally a couple of years ago, and expensive it was too, but our front door is really looking worse for wear. Neither of us fancies repainting it, so it'll be another professional job, I'm afraid. Love the strawberry planter planted up with the houseleeks, and your new Anokhi skirt looks stunning worn with that yellow crochet halter top. The things we do for cats! Phoebe often takes up the whole of our sofa, while we are sitting on our slightly less comfortable 1950s cocktail chairs doing our backs in.
