The Distancing Diaries - Day 126 & 127

On Friday (day 126), eager to book next week's National Trust adventure, I was up and online by 6am. The weather forecast had been for a glorious day but, by the time I'd finished my Wii Fit workout the rain was torrential, so my early morning tomato watering plans were put on hold. Instead I washed all of the glass collection in the lounge and gave the room a thorough clean. I was going to clean the windows but Frank decided to snuggle up on the chaise for a nap so I left it till later.

I've collected vintage and secondhand glass for years, there's also some in the kitchen, bathroom and on the landing. Being a cheapskate, I've never paid more than £8 for a piece.

After our fruit & yogurt breakfast Jon went and did a big supermarket shop, interested to see if the mandatory mask wearing rule that had come into force at midnight was being adhered to. Meanwhile the rain had stopped and it felt pleasantly warm. Frank & Stephen went outside and I was able to clean the inside & outside of the lounge windows without worrying about disturbing anyone's morning nap.

Jon returned to report that almost everyone was wearing masks although the shoppers turning up without and refusing the free ones offered by the staff were still allowed in. Jon wasn't unduly concerned, he just kept his distance, as he always does, there's no point in getting stressed about it. He sanitised the shopping and put it away while I brought forward my overnight plant soaking session and did it during the day.

Can you believe that I own a piece of clothing that I've never worn? I bought this maxi dress from the Chowpatti beach branch of Anokhi in Mumbai back in February and thought that it was about time I cut the shop labels off and gave it an outing.

A shop label, now there's a novelty!

After our noodle lunch we drove over to Liz and Al's as Jon needed to have another rummage through their wood pile. Liz and I drank spiced gins in the garden whilst the boys hunted for wood.

The beautiful red rose in the foreground was one of Liz's 50th birthday presents, it smells amazing and is called Dublin (her Dad was Irish).

There's plenty to admire in their front garden. Plants are the new rock'n'roll.

On the way home there were queues outside every chip shop we passed with no evidence of anyone wearing a mask (despite it now being law if you visit a takeaway). Not that we stopped off, we only share a bag of chips if we're home late from working away and have lost the will to cook, the last time was on the way back from Glastonbury in 2019! The choice is limited too, most traditional Black Country chip shops fry in beef dripping or cook the fish in the same oil as the chips, no good for vegetarians.

Back at home Jon downed a bottle of strong ale to catch up with my boozy head start. For tea we shared half a caramelised onion & a Feta cheese and tomato flan Jon had found on the reduced shelf in the supermarket earlier along with a salad. We watched Gardener's World, more of My Greek Odyssey and drank rum & cola.

On Saturday (day 127)  Frank woke Jon up by clawing at the bedroom rug and stared at him intently until he went downstairs and let him out. He brought mugs of tea back to bed where we read and Stephen snoozed, squeezed in between the pair of us, until just gone 8am. I stripped and changed the bed & loaded the washing machine while Jon put some sausages in the oven and made coffee.

After our sausage sandwich breakfast I pegged out the washing and caught up with blogland, ignoring the torrential rain and leaving the laundry on the line. Jon braved the rain to fiddle about with Gilbert's brakes before taking him out for a spin around the block.

I swept the rug in the spare bedroom & polished the floorboards and then, as there was a respite from the rain, planted a few more dwarf French beans hoping it wasn't too late in the season.

I'm sure that the nasturtium had grown another foot overnight, I've never known a plant like it!

Never having grown a nasturtium before I bought a single 14 cm pot of the Empress of India variety (just because the name appealed) when I placed an on-line order from a local garden centre at the start of lockdown, I'm beginning to think I bought a triffid by accident.

This is the second outing for the Papillion 1970s wraparound skirt that arrived on Wednesday morning, teamed with one of my vintage cheesecloth blouses & trusty tooled leather belt.

Somebody appreciates the profusion of leaves & flowers.

Newsflash! We have six tomatoes! Thanks to all of you kind enough to offer advice. Hopefully moving the majority from the greenhouse to the garden (and wearing my tomato dress) has worked.

Jon managed to scrub Gilbert between showers while I abandoned my gardening plans and had a self-care session instead, epilating my legs, stripping off last week's nail paint and applying my trusty Sally Hansen Hard as Nails as a base coat.

Always keen to reduce the amount of waste I generate, instead of cotton wool pads I've been using reusable eye make remover pads from &keep since May 2019 (HERE). I switched to their reusable nail varnish remover pads a month ago (HERE) and they're pretty good, too.

The biggest decision of the week is deciding which colour Barry M to use next.

Tea was half a posh shop-bought pizza with salad (no photos, we were ravenous, not having eaten since 8.30 am). The plan for later is rum, cola and the final three installments of My Greek Odyssey, Jon's got to cancel the free trial tomorrow.

Stay safe & see you soon!

  1. that skirt goes well with the green top, I wouldn't have thought to put those colours together :) My nasturtiums started from 2 packets of seed early in the year and are going mental like yours - you should be getting loads of seeds too now, make sure to pick them as (a) more flowers will grow and (b) if you plant them, you will get a second crop as I reckon we are in for an Indian Summer.. I planted my seeds up last night in the existing spots/pots and expect more to come. Everyone at the shops here is good as gold wearing their masks, queueing nicely. I am noticing people being kind and friendly to each other, giving way in the shopping aisles etc. I went swimming today - that was weird!

    1. The skirt has green in the block print, something I didn't realise until it arrived.
My seed pods still look a bit too juicy to harvest, I had a look under the plant to see if anything had fallen off but to no avail. I suppose you're a couple of weeks ahead being down south!
August is usually awful and September much better, we could do with some reliable weather though, its one nice day followed by six mediocre ones!
There was hardly anyone about when I went to the shops last week, I do wonder if they'll be anything left on the high street by the end of the year.
Swimming? I bet it was strange after so long without going! xxx

  2. You can also pickle nasturtium seeds and use them like capers. I think it's a fabulous plant and, like Jacob, I like the flowers in a salad! Changeable weather here too but I am delighted with the rain. What an attractive three-some Liz, Al and Jon make and I know, with you, will be an even more attractive four-some!!! Lovely flowers. Your agapanthus look terrific!

    1. Hi Catmac, yes, I'd read that about nasturtium seed pods, I'd rather eat them than the flowers, it's like chewing bitter velvet!
It's been lovely when the sun's out today, really warm. It's gone really dark now, I think there's a storm on the way.
Gardener's World reckon agapanthus do well in pots but my border ones seem really happy where they are. xxx

  3. Ooh, I love your new Anokhi dress, Vix! It's a stunner, and looks fabulous on you! I am lusting for all your gorgeous glass - I have a collection of Indiana Glass Company amber and moss-coloured glass dishes and glassware that I've acquired over the years - and I use it all!

I always love seeing pictures of Frank (such a little scamp, waking you both up!), and Stephen, who looks just crashed out there in his nappage.

We don't (yet) have mandatory masking here, but I wear one in public at all times now. You simply can't control other people (even when they are stoopid!), so just take care of yourself, right?

Fun times with gin and run and colas, ha ha! Have a lovely weekend, my dear friend!

    1. Thanks, Sheila! I get confused when I visit Anokhi as I like everything. In the past I used to leave empty-handed, now I try absolutely everything in an XS on and see what I like the most. This dress was the winner!
Frank has refused to leave the house today as Jon is working in the kitchen and he likes to keep his eye on him. Stephen's a snuggly boy again!
Good for you wearing a mask all the time, its just the right thing to do, isn't it?
Hope you're having a fabulous Sunday! xxx

  5. I need to cancel Acorn when the service for this month is up. I haven't watched anything in ages having gotten caught up on all seasons of Doc MArtin. I'll keep Brit Box for a while as I do like Casualty and Holby City, and if I decide to get desperate, might start Eastender watching again. I'm glad your tomatoes are now loving their relocated spot. Both your new outfits are so nice-I even put on real clothes today-not just a t-shirt. Good new habits maybe.

I'm glad you wore some real clothes today! xxx

  6. Doesn’t it feel good being with friends again. I had a cuppa with neighbours yesterday and lunch with my bestie at Park Farm teashop today. I’m there that much I’ll end up on the payroll at this rate. I’m just so comfortable there.
Thanks for tip on the base coat. Mum had a Sally Hansen Base/top coat so I pinched that and used it with A Barry M cerise polish.
I’ve got a great tale to tell you about a Sula 20 year old dress. I’ll big blogging about it late next week.
Your Anokhi dress is beautiful, so lovely to see someone dressed properly. People are still in bloody leggings and tee shirts. I hate that look.
I’m really enjoying watching Monty even though I don’t Garden. I’ll be glued to A Suitable Boy on Sunday will you. Miriam Margoyles in Australia had me in tucks yesterday. I’ll be tuning in again next week.
Send some good weather up here will you please xxx

Hope the Sally Hanson does the trick, some of the Barry M colours I can wear for a week and others need a few touch-ups over the week. The Sula dress tale sounds interesting.
I'm so happy with the Anokhi dress, I felt about ten foot tall wearing it. I don't get this horrible casual can't-be-bothered dressing either, life's too short not to make the most of yourself.
I keep meaning to watch that MM programme, she's hilarious, isn't she? I'm so excited about A Suitable Boy! xxx

  7. That new Anokhi maxi dress looks amazing on you. Wear it often, it is shame not to wear something so special and beautiful. Your garden looks more impressive each day. I love that you wore a tomatoes dress the other day to motivate your tomatoes to turn red. I also like your second styling, that green blouse is a wonderful match for that midi skirt. Enjoy your Greek adventures.

  11. A new dress with labels I’m in shock !! I am only kidding. I did a sneaky uniqlo order as they had a mega sale and I saw a load of t shirts I had My eye on. So I bought them. It’s a rare occasion. But I love uniqlo. Mum said they were turning people away In their supermarket. And the manager made one person blush. Good for him. I would name them and shame them!!! Ahh nasturtiums I love them but you have to cut them back all the time. I got rid of mine. I put a creeper in that is the next thing out!!! that is a nightmare!!!! I love glass some go for up to £30.00 pounds now!!! Keep safe and well.
    Ps I miss quiche !!

    1. I know! one of the reasons why I hadn't worn the dress is because it seemed a shame to cut the labels off, I'm not used to them!
That's great that the tee shirts you wanted were reduced, how lucky!
There isn't enough police to enforce the face mask law and the staff don't want to put themselves in danger if it kicks off, it's best just to leave them to it and keep a safe distance away.
Nasturtiums are gorgeous, they're like geraniums and remind me of holidays in the Mediterranean.
Love a bit of quiche, I should make it from scratch but really can't be bothered!
      Stay safe. xxxx

i sowed a many between the veggies and in the bigger containers with agapanthus and gladiolus, there the nasturtium will still bloom when the main plant is long over - but i could only do it late in may because of the cold snap we had back then.... yesterday i dicovered the first 2 blooms. but i used the leaves already for herb butter.

    2. Just watched A Suitable Boy, have to say I was disappointed too. Some of the dialogue and also wardrobe didn't seem very authentic. On the other hand, I caught up with MM today and enjoyed it....no bloody filter whatsover! 😉

  22. Wish I could bale and mail my nasturtiums to Jacob! This year's has been a super crop and one can eat only so many flowers. Pre-pandemic, they'd have served me well as ingredients in a pretty salad for carry-in events. (I've also frozen borage blossoms in ice cubes to upgrade lemonade brought in for ladies' luncheons. Remember carry-in's? Luncheons?)

Your Anokhi maxi is worthy to be worn while dining on a fabulous terrace, somewhere in the Mediterranean. Imagine the metallic bits glinting in candlelight! One doesn't see such fine details in the surviving Indian block prints hereabouts. On the up-scale garments with a lining, there might be a metallic ribbon edging the hem of the skirt.
