The Distancing Diaries - Day 58 & 59

Day 58 and Jon was first up, he made tea and brought it back to bed where we read until 9am. For breakfast, we ate wholemeal toast with Whole Earth peanut butter and Morrison's version of Marmite.

I replaced the elastic in the cuffs of the blouse I'd worn the previous day while the Andrew Marr Show was on. It had needed doing ever since I'd bought it last year but looking at yesterday's photos was the kick up the arse I needed to get it done.

Jon decided that the chindri rugs (made from scraps leftover from the Indian textile industry) in the bathroom needed an airing and slung them over the line in the sunshine.

It was warm enough for me to water the patio plants barefoot and for the first time in days, Jacob was awake and keen to go outside.

This week's lockdown nail paint is Barry M's Passionfruit, part of the order I'd placed a few weeks ago and the first time I'd worn it. I'm liking the tropical vibe.

Like most of us, I hadn't seen my brother since before lockdown. He doesn't do social media and I don't do mobile phones or any of that Zoom or Facethingy stuff. We decided that, as our garden is accessed from the street as opposed to the house, it would be perfectly safe if he came round, we sat outside and maintained a safe distance throughout...so we did.

A few of you commented on my groovy coffee set which my parents received as a wedding present in 1966. It was designed in 1962 by Jill Pemberton for Denby after being inspired by a trip to Russia. Originally called Samarkand, the name was changed to Arabesque after Portmerion, a rival pottery firm, exhibited an exhibition with the same name.

Jon continued painting the chairs, while the lads lazed in the sunshine.

Here are the noodles we eat most days - not homemade or anything fancy like that. They're part of our staple diet at festivals and since we cut back on our bread consumption three and a half years ago they're a quick and tasty alternative to a sandwich.

After lunch, the sun had vanished and it had clouded over. Oh well, it was good while it lasted! I moved a couple of plants that were outgrowing their pots. I've not idea what either of them is or where they came from but Jon calls the one below a spiky bastard and insisted I plant it somewhere away from his legs, so I stuck it in the empty border behind Ebbie. Hopefully, it won't cause any mischief there.

This is some kind of a climber, I thought it was dead but a couple of stems seem to have burst into life in the last few days.

I've trimmed off the dead bits, replanted it and woven the stems under the electrical wire on the garden wall, let's see what happens next.

Are there signs of alien life in the garden?

No, that'll be Jon respraying his wheels on the lawn.

Lockdown outfit, day 58? Saturday's blouse and last week's Phool midi skirt again. I'm sure my hair's grown since I washed it last night.

Tea was cheese salad with half a tomato & garlic flatbread from the freezer. We watched the rest of Age of The Image, a fascinating series we'd started watching the night before on the i-player exploring how the power of images have transformed the modern world and, of course, Killing Eve.

Monday (day 59) started with a Wii Fit session and fruit and yoghurt for breakfast. Jon did a grocery run and the lads sat outside anxiously awaiting his return...

I dug up one of the grasses and a clump of wild geraniums from the border beneath the lounge window and moved them to the bed in which I'd planted spiky bastard and the half-dead climber yesterday.

If the other wild geraniums we've moved during lockdown are anything to go by, this should perk up in a day or so. I gave everything a thorough watering and, just as I'd finished, Jon arrived back with the shopping which he disinfected before putting away.

After our noodles, Jon mowed the lawn and trimmed the edges and watering the veg plot. It was so hot in the greenhouse that my sunglasses steamed up.

Whilst I cut back the brambles, bamboo and bindweed from the pathway that leads from the Kinky Shed to the pond and planted out the globe artichokes into the border.

I'm growing them for their good looks rather than their flavour.

As always I was accompanied on my rounds by Mr Blackbird. he's not scared at all.

Jon tinkered around with some technical stuff at the kitchen table whilst I took my book outside and read in the sunshine. It's my 24th book of the year, here's what I've read in 2020 so far.

  • The Runner                                           Peter May
  • The Blue Nowhere                               Jeffrey Deaver
  • Speaking in Tongues                            Jeffrey Deaver
  • The Likeness                                        Tana French
  • The Coffin Dancer                               Jeffrey Deaver
  • Personal Injuries                                  Scott Turow
  • The Vanished Man                               Jeffrey Deaver
  • The Winner                                          David Baldacci
  • Triangle                                               Jeffrey Deaver
  • Tuesdays with Morrie                          Mitch Alborn
  • The Stone Monkey                              Jeffrey Deaver
  • Faithful Place                                      Tana French
  • In The Woods                                     Tana French
  • A Small Town in Germany                  John Le Carre
  • The Kashmir Shawl                             Rosie Thomas
  • Arthur & George                               Julian Barnes
  • A Rising Man                                      Abir Mukherjee
  • Our Game                                          John Le Carre
  • I'm Travelling Alone                           Samuel Bjork
  • Devotion                                            Louisa Young
  • The Stationery Shop of Tehran           Marjan Kamali
  • The Memory Box                               Margaret Forster
  • Snowblind                                          Ragnar Jonasson

The airport fiction (Jeffrey Deaver, Peter May, David Baldacci and Scott Turow) were all beach reads. Jon found a lot of modern American fiction to download on my e-reader for free. I enjoyed Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme books but wasn't wild about his other thrillers. Tara French is worth reading, her characterisation is excellent and there are lots of twists and turns in her plots. Much as I enjoy a Scandi Noir I wasn't keen on Samuel Bjork's I'm Travelling Alone, far-fetched bordering on the downright daft. I adore Le Carre and both Our Game & A Small Town in Germany were of his usual standards, the latter particularly, Cold War-era espionage at its finest.

I really enjoyed The Kashmir Shawl, which Gill kindly sent me; Devotion was superb and I learnt a great deal about the rise of fascism in Italy prior to WWII; I'd also recommend A Rising Man, detective fiction set in Raj-era India post WWI, Snowblind, Scandi noir at its claustrophobic best and Arthur & George, where Arthur Conan Doyle attempts to help an Anglo Indian solicitor (from the outskirts of Walsall) clear his name after being accused of an atrocity.

Jon joined me outside for a coffee and Richard, the postman, turned up with a couple of parcels. A Hex Bit set for Jon, made up the road in Birmingham, and my latest order from &Keep - a wooden dish brush, dental floss refills, reusable tea bags, a coconut bottle brush and plastic-free wood floor cleaning drops.

We went for a walk around the block, saw a grand total of eight people - the busiest it's been since lockdown. We all maintained a safe distance and made a point of stepping off the pavement to give ourselves adequate space and, of course, there was lots of smiling and saying hello despite only recognising one of our fellow walkers.

Recognise the skirt? It's the 1970s Ayesha Davar midi skirt I wore on Saturday (as they say on Instagram #reweardon'tcare). This time I've combined it with an embroidered cotton blouse (originally from Zara) and my trusty tooled leather belt.

Tea tonight is Halloumi with roasted vegetables which Jon's currently chopping in the kitchen. Tonight we'll watch Fenix (we've had to limit ourselves as there are only 8 episodes) and Grayson Perry's Art Club.

How's life treating you in lockdown land, are you still staying put?

  1. So glad you got an outdoor visit in with your brother, the weather assisted that day. We do what we have to do in these times. Beautiful as ever!

  2. Thanks for the closer look at that handsome coffee set! It reflects what you've shown us of your mother's very adventurous sense of design (vintage AND high street chic). Now that I'm spending so much more time preparing and consuming meals, I've also taken some cups and plates off the shelves for daily use. If this isn't the "someday" we've been saving for, what is?

    1. Thanks, Beth! It causes mixed reactions, poeple either love Arabesque or loathe it. I much prefer chunky pieces like those cups rtahre than dainty bone china.
That's exactly what we're doing, no "best" plates or glasses any more! Life's for living! xxx

  3. Vix,
I always look forward to your posts. Photos of your house, garden, and clothes are always such a bright spot in my day. I am mostly staying put even though my area of the world currently has very few cases. I'm dying to know how you manage to post to Instagram without a cell phone. I've been trying to figure out how to do that for months, but my Google searches tell me I can't.
Thank you for spending the time posting so consistently. I enjoy reading your posts so much.

    1. Hi Leslie! I'm glad you're staying safe and that the case rate is low where you are. Thank you so much for commenting and I'm delighted you enjoy my posts.
I use a programme called "Desktopify" which allows me to post to IG from my PC. It's really straightforward, if a Luddite like me can manage it!
      Stay safe. xxx

Totally in love with the coffe set, it's so beautifully designed!
And your garden is looking more and more lush every day!, love to see you enjoying it!
I'm taking notes on the books you've read and commented favourably on, because Mr.A. is a scandi noir reader and also a huge fan of spy and crime novels. I'm more a nonfiction reader!.
Thank you for telling us about what you've been watching too, some of these programmes and series have been a fab find for me!.

    1. Thanks, Monica! I'm loving the midi at the moment and having fun mixing and matching my tops instead of reaching for the same ones.
Mr A has excellent taste. I do enjoy a bit of non-fiction but find it difficult to read at night in bed as I keep falling asleep and forgetting crucial names and dates! xxx

  5. Thanks so much, Marlene. It's lovely to hear from you and to read your news on your blog.
I find sandwiches a bit too heavy, I feel like a nap after a big lunch!
Reading is such a wonderful bit of escapism and relaxation. I thought I'd read more than I normally do during lockdown but I'm always too busy! xxx

  6. I love Denby, it's my favourite pottery. Arabesque is so lovely, I will keep an eye out for it it's so exactly my taste.
The garden is perfection. Spikey bastard looks suspiciously like a little lateral growing pyracantha bush?
It's good to get back to some hot weather, it's nice to feel the grass under your feet isnt it.
Thanks for the book recommendations, I'm getting through lots too.
    Enjoy your yummy halloumi. xxx

    1. I love Denby, too. Delicate bone china does nothing for me, chunky pottery is much more tactile and pleasing to the eye. There's loads on Ebay at decent prices, it's not everyone's thing - fortunately for us!
I think you might be right about spiky bastard. I've got a feeling it was one of those £1.69 shrubs in Morrison's last year I slipped into the shopping basket for no other reason than I could!
      The halloumi was delicious.
I hope it really does hit 27° on Wednesday! xxx

  7. Our weather's been a bit up and down these last couple of days. Often sunny, but not nearly warm enough to sit outside in the garden, and regularly clouding over. I guess we can't complain really, we've seen far worse weather in Spring. I'm loving the Arabesque coffee set: how groovy is that! I haven't seen my brother since August, and he's only texted me back once, back in March, after I'd asked him if he was OK. Haven't seen my sister in a long time either, but we've spoken on the phone a couple of times. Well, I called her, actually. That's how close a family we are! I think Sally's right and Spiky Bastard is a Pyracantha. I love Mr. Blackbird, they can be really cheeky, can't they? Your two-tone hair is gorgeous and I can't believe how long it is. And yes to rewearing favourite clothes! xxx

    1. The BBC keep building our hopes up, today's been largely sunny then we've had torrential rain all evening...dare I say it? Good for the gardens!!
Isn't your brother naughty? Jon usually gets a three word answer when he texts mine!
I hope spiky bastard enjoys his new location behind Ebby, he looks better already since I liberated him from his pot!
I was thinking of challenging myself to rewear those two skirts until I'd exhausted my supply of tops, it all depends on the weather though. Don't fancy a quilted skirt in the promised 27°C heat! xxx

  8. I like the coffee set, I like Denby, it's quality. The zara top is really pretty. Your hair is looking nice with the lighter colour on the ends. Love seeing your tortoise, we had one but we think it got nicked or escaped through a gap in the fence most likely , that was 27 years ago so he's long gone! So nice that you are doing these posts more often, I really look forward to seeing what you have been up to - did mine today, not quite as much going on at Touchwood as there is at Stonecroft :)

I'm excited to read your post now! xxx

  9. Do you have tea balls available in the UK? Stainless steel, sort of egg shaped to hold loose tea. Or my favourite looks like two mini sieves held together, easy to fill and easy to empty.

I was just thinking(always dangerous, lol) that your reusable teabags would stain and might hold the previous tea's flavour.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Already got one, it goes away with me to India every year so I can buy loose tea and drink it in my room! These are an experiment, we've got loads of different teas, I thought I'd try them in a pot and at 55p, if it doesn't work, I can always repurpose them into a lavender bag! x

    2. That is a pretty good price.

One of our tea chains sells packs of teabags to fill yourself, biodegradable, unbleached paper. Can put enough tea in for one mug or enough for a pot. I'm cheap I buy them when they are two for one (usually due to seasonal packaging)

  10. Your tea set is amazing! I love that pattern, and the tall coffee pot is just so fun. I like seeing Stephen all stretched out like that (Vizzini does that all the time - it means "tummy rub, please" to him, maybe not for Stephen!).

Lovely outfits, and yup, don't care if it was just worn! Your coral nail polish is such a great shade!

We'll see how things go here - after this weekend (Monday is a holiday) things will be opening up more, and we will definitely be seeing more people around as shops open, and services are restored.

Thanks so much for these regular posts, Vix - I know how much work they are to put together, but they are very much appreciated! Happy week ahead to you and Jon and all your boyz.

I can't get my head round life returning to normal again, especially as Jon's done all the shopping for the past month and I haven't even set foot in a shop.
I have to do these posts in stages, uplaoding photos at lunchtime and teatime so they don't take over an entire day - then I'd get nothing done worth writing about. xxx

  12. I recognize some plants from the garden. They are progressing well. Your outfits are always very pretty. I like the zara blouse and the midi skirt. I like the brownish printed midi and blouse as well, very pretty combo. Your hair has grown! I feel like my has grown overnight but it has probably taken some time as well. I don't feel like going to a hairdresser, even if they are open again. I'm just letting it grow, split hairs and everything. I haven't been going out much, except for walks in the nature. I'm fortunate to be surrounded by nature so human company is pretty much optional. A former colleague of mine now stops by my house for some help a few times of week, I'd almost prefer if she didn't, but she does need help with some work stuff. I've been helping her over phone up until now, but it is not always possible to get things done that way. I suppose the risk is small since I still try to keep my distance. From your reading list, I only read one book- Snowblind. Not sure will I pick that author again, even if I did like that one, I think I would get bored of the next one. I do plan to read more of Tana French, though. The one novel of hers that I've read so far impressed me so much, I've been meaning to read more of her ever since.

    1. Oh dear, that's a tricky situation with your collegue turning up at your house for help, isn't it? It's kind to help her but she ought to be more considearet of your needs.
You are lukcy to live in such a beautiful place, we're lucky with our garden, our daily walk is urban but it's a change of scene and, mostly, we rarely encounter anybody.
Isn't it strange how our hair suddenly has a growth spurt? Jon bought me a bottle of jasmine scented hair oil with the grocries today, I use it in India but haven't seen it here before, what a treat that will be.
Tana French is a good writer, the BBC serialised a couple of her books, combining them into one story (The Likeness and In The Woods), it was very confusing but the individual books were excellent. xxx

I think the spiky bastard might be Pyracantha/thus? I bought some as it has lovely yellow berries that the birds love; looks very similar to yours but mine seems to be taking ages to grow.

I loved both your outfits and it's interesting to see you in a midi skirt rather than a maxi. The Zara top was very glamorous! I'm sorry to say I still haven't hemmed my two maxi dresses.

I've been reading a lot too - to the detriment of the crocheting - but I've read some corkers. I also read a very good espionage book; mine was called Victory Square and it must be years since I've read one.

  15. I've mixed thoughts on staying put and allowing more space, My 19 year old is feeling so cooped up and isolated, though she has had many socially distanced interactions. I am sick of working from home-but should not complain as I am able to work and earn an income, so then I feel guilty for being whiny. It felt good getting my daughters college clothes unpacked, dedicates washed and hung for drying, her bedding stored. Now I'm helping her tackle and organize clutter, and it will take days. Thanks for posting the noodles-I have been curious. Your outfits are stunning and I love your hair up with the white blouse.

I've eaten about 4 packs of those in Lockdown as I haven't allowed myself to buy any since a year ago because of trying to reduce my plastic consumption but I bought a few when it was hard to find any Nooodles or Pasta from my local cornershop and my GOODNESS I missed them! They are so tasty! At work sometimes, I eat the leftovers of them from my work colleague who eats them but has a funny appetite so I often eat what she can't finish of her lunch to stop it being thrown away! She always offers them to me now when she's had enough so I've managed to have a little still!
I love your #rewearnocare skirt- it is gorgeous!!
I've been enjoying wearing lots of different things from my vast wardrobe- I enjoy wearing them at home because I am not cycling, running around, getting stressed by children, in too-warm classrooms so I can wear them and not get too hot in them! I have bought a couple of secondhand things- I bought a secondhand burnt orange cotton corduroy dress from Thought (they are an eco-brand) on eBay the other day which I was dead chuffed about!
We've had some weird round marks on our lawn too but we don't know what they are from! We assume fox wee has burnt it but not sure...

    1. Thanks so much for that link, Kezzie! I've followed them and shall investigate further. I try not to use Amazon either although Jon more than makes up for me not using them, I'm afraid!
I do feel guilty for the waste the noodles generate but they're so tasty and I try and be good with the rest of my choices and not beat myself up about it.
It must be so good to be able to wear whatever you like without worrying about cycling or running around after children. The cord dress sounds like a great investment. xxx

  22. Your post are always so uplifting and such a joy to read. I love your new nail polish. I'm now off work for the time being, so I might treat myself to a fabulous bright colour just this once. X

  23. Love your blog. Pardon my ignorance, what is the difference between tea and high tea?

    1. Thank you! Tea is a cooked meal we eat between 5 - 6pm, in Victorian times it was refered to as High Tea as it was taken at the dining table with high backed chairs, the "high" bit got dropped many years ago. x

  24. yesterday after I got done doing some gardening, I saw myself in the bathroom mirror and couldn't stop laughing. The term "hot mess" was running through my mind. You, on the other hand, look beautiful. I did chop a tree down, so I have an excuse

    1. Thank you! I doubt if I'd look much better if I'd been chopping a tree down, mind you we're not allowed to touch ours and would end up in court if we did! xxx

  25. Hello Vix, that sure is a pretty summer shade on your nails. As usual you look great and I too think the white blouse looks lovely. Can't wait to see the chairs. I too have been "shopping" my own garden as I don't feel like venturing to a garden center. My friend has gone back to work in onne and she said the customers wee like "locusts" she could not keep up! I find it fun to walk around and see what I can transplant or am I just tight lol That really is an impressive list of books you have read. Take carex

    1. Thank you so much! After years of blue or green nails I still can't get used to this colour, I love it but my hands and feet don't look like mine.
We're the same, neither of us can face garden centres or DIY shops so it's a matter of having a runnage in shed or moving plants we've already got - make do and not spend!
Your poor friend, I bet the customers were going mad after so long without shops, I'm the opposite, the longer I'm away from them, the less I'm interested in going to one.
      Much love to you. xxx

  26. Those noodles are making me hungry! It's almost lunch time here, but I don't have any noodles of any kind so it looks like beans again and maybe pineapple for dessert. Time to buy some noodles for sure. Your coffee set is amazing! Wow! you've read a lot of books this year already. I'm only on my fifth. Hope Jacob had fun outside. It's cool that you have a blackbird friend to help you on your rounds. Love your awesome outfits and the nail polish too! Take care

    1. Now you've got me craving pineapple, Cheryene!
I thought I was behind on my reading this year and imagined I'd make up for it during lockdown but I've been too busy.
It's lovely for it to be warm again so Jacob can potter about, he eats loads when it's sunny, I'm glad we've grown lettuce! xxx

  27. Artichokes are beautiful plants! I'm not sure I could bear to eat them unless I was desperate. I'm glad you were able to see your brother-that's important.

You may never want to leave that garden again by the time you're through with it. Have you started thinking about what you'll grow in the winter? If Jon gets started now you can have cold frames ready by autumn ;)

    1. They are, aren't they? They're the world's most disappointing thing to eat but I thought they'd look great in the border!
I hadn't thought of a winter garden - with our last festival cancelling and travel looking more and more unlikely I shall investigate further (and speak to Jon!) xxx

  28. I've always been a fan of Denby, but that coffee set is really something special. What a beautiful thing to own, and even more special for being a wedding gift to your parents.

I've been wondering for a while about trying to find alternatives to plastic cleaning materials, so thanks for providing the links to the &Keep products, as they seem to be just what I had in mind.

I'm glad you're keeping well - and busy! It's a shame that there will be no festival trading this year, especially as I was intending to try to come and see your stall in person at one of them, but let's hope for better things next year.

    1. Hello, Fran! Denby is so underrated, you can pick it up ridiculously cheaply on Ebay at the moment.
I stumbled across &Keep when I was looking to reduce our plastic consumption last year, other than a shampoo bar I've been really impressed with the quality of their products, prices and how quickly they despatch them, even during a pandemic. If they haven'y got what you want in stock, you usually get an email within a week letting you know that it's back on the website.
I'm so sad that we won't get to meet at a festival this year, here's hoping life and festivals will return to normal in 2021. xxxx

  29. I've had my Dad, and then my Mum over for a garden visit too. To my mind it's safer than a public park as we'd encounter no one else. They don't come in to the house and we keep our distance, so it a rule I'm happy to break as it's not reckless. My brother should be coming over this weekend, if it doesn't warm up we'll sit either end of my greenhouse which is nearly 5m long so plenty of room.
After you mentioned the Barry M Green Origin nail paint I've been meaning to try it. Then you mentioned the mascara and I just had to place an order, it took a while to get here but it arrived yesterday. I got the avocado lip mask too which is really nourishing. I ordered the cranberry and lilac orchid nail paints, they aren't exactly what I thought but you can't always tell when looking online but they are lovely.
Other than countryside walks I've been staying put, I'd love a walk on a beach but will keep that for another day...
    xx

    1. Good for you. When you can access the garden without going through the house it seems perfectly fine to sit at home at a safe distance, far more so than having some jogger breathe on you in a park!
It is hard chosing nail colours online, I hope you like the colours once they're on. It does feel good to not only support a British company but to have something delivered, it's like having a present! xxx
