Life in Lockdown - Day 60 & 61

Tuesday (day 60) started in the usual way with a Wii Fit session, it had rained for most of the previous night and when I popped outside to refill the birdbath I could see new signs of life in the beds.

After catching up with blogs and our fruit & yoghurt breakfast, Jon announced that he was off to the coal house to reorganise his tools. How many saws does a man need?

I decided that, with the temperature set to rocket later, I could safely pack away my boots.

I don't usually do this as I need boots for festival season but, now they've all cancelled, I'm safe to pack them away until the Autumn.

I swept the floor, scrubbed down the skirting board and gave everything thorough dusting.

The shoe rack - which long time readers might recognise as the Utility shelf that used to hang on the bathroom wall before we redecorated last year - now houses my Lottas.

And the Ghanaian basket contains my sandals & Indian chappals.

I removed my velvet scarves leaving my silk ones suspended from the scarf holder, which Jon made from garden wire and cup hooks.

The contents of the wardrobe remain the same, I was still wearing my Afghan a few days ago.

After reading my friend Betty's blog post first thing this morning, I followed suit and put a few of our houseplants outside in anticipation for the promised sunshine which, by 11am, had burst free from the clouds.

After I'd pegged out the washing, I watered the plants on the patio and set about repotting the Dragon Tree which I've had for years and, after months of looking sickly and spindly, has flourished with all the love and attention I've lavished on it during the lockdown.

After our noodles, I checked the Kinky Melon bank account and was amazed to see that the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme payment had already gone through. I never expected that.

I celebrated with my favourite Indian tea and tested out my new reusable tea bag, which gets the thumbs up!

Jon spent the afternoon tinkering with Ebbie.

Me, on the other hand, changed into a bikini, slapped on factor 30 and read my book in the garden. And how about this for a coincidence? My book is set in the Iranian city of Isfahan and I'm lounging on a Ghalamkar bedspread, the style of Persian textile printing which originated in Isfahan three hundred years ago. How do I know? It's stamped "Ghalamkar, Isfahan, Iran" on the back. A jumble sale find way back in the noughties.

The lads kept a watchful eye on me.

Book finished, washing & houseplants put away, and the car and the coal house locked up and it was time for our tea, a veggie burger in a salt and pepper bap (found in the depths of the freezer) with salad, which included rocket and lettuce from the greenhouse.

Entertainment was the final two episodes of Fenix that we'd intended to watch the previous evening until we realised that there was another episode of Age of the Image we'd missed. As I'd finished A Good Place To Die in the garden earlier I started another book when I went to bed.

After my Wii Fit session today (day 61) I took all my houseplants outside to give them a good dose of sunshine, noticing that the first Oriental poppy of the season had burst into life.

My garden's a jungle...

Free from the usual clutter of plants I cleaned the kitchen windowsill and when Jon got up we had our usual fruit and yoghurt.

After breakfast, we wrapped Frank in a towel and tried to get a good look at his mouth as we'd noticed he'd been dribbling for a couple of days and was a bit out of sorts. Unable to get any closer, Jon called the vets who suggested he brought Frank to the surgery but, with the vets having to observe social distancing, Jon would have to hand Frank over at the door and sit and wait in the van until the vet had examined him.

Jon arrived home half an hour later, without Frank. Due to him living as a stray for the first part of his life, his teeth have never been great but it appeared that several of his teeth were badly infected and needed to be removed under anaesthetic. The vet hoped to proceed after blood tests and would call us later to let us know when we could collect him.

I do what I always do in a crisis and threw myself into a frenzy of activity. I pulled out everything from under the spare room bed, swept the rug and put it all back neatly (our travel bags, a suitcase full of dressmaking patterns, a doll's house extension and a Victorian top hat in a box).

A couple of years ago Jon & I had decoupaged this unicorn head, added some ridiculous pink false lashes and gilded her horn. I thought it was about time I displayed her in the bathroom.

Outside I added a few more plants to my Ikea lampshade planters and then gave everything a thorough watering, including Jon & the houseplants.

Inspired by Beate's plaits and headscarf I followed suit, tying one of my vintage Indian silk screen-print scarves around my head. The 1990s Diesel cut-offs, Boden bikini (I'm wearing the bottoms under my shorts ready to strip down to once my tasks were complete) and oversized '70s sunglasses were all charity shopped.

Like me, Jon's not one for sitting around dwelling on stuff. He continued working on Ebbie and planted some Rosedale lettuce seeds before making our lunchtime noodles.

After lunch, we lay in the sunshine with Stephen Squirrel who, by 3pm, had suddenly realised that the family unit was incomplete.

Jon's just brought Frank home, he's had 5 teeth removed and is currently hiding under the bed in the spare room, I'm glad I cleaned it earlier.

Tea will be a paneer curry with a garlic and coriander nan, accompanied by a beer and followed with rum and cola in front of The Great British Sewing Bee, we need it after today!

Stay safe, keep healthy and be positive.

  2. Awww, poor kitty! My Maurice had 2 teeth removed last Autumn, first day after the surgery was really tough on him but gradually he felt much better. Is Frank on painkillers and antibiotics now? My vet prescribed them both for Maurice. I've never seen a cat drugged up to his eyeballs on opiates before,so I did not know should I laugh or should I cry :-))) But it helped. Please give a gentle hug to Frank from me and my cats!

    1. Thanks you so much, Daisy! That's really kind of you to let me know that Maurice wasn't that good the day after surgery, it's put my mind a rest. Having five teeth removed in one go would be bad enough for a human, wouldn't it? He has got drugs, Jon's going to try and tempt him with a bit of food first so he had administer them. xxx

    2. I feel for you Vix! I remember Maurice hiding under furniture, not responding to my calls, not interested in food and his sweet face swollen so badly he looked like a member of the Habsburg family! I was so anxious and helpless, checking on him every 5 minutes, not seeing any progress...I know, some people would say "oh it's only a cat" but he is my precious furry baby who found me in my darkest hour and helped me to survive :-) Cats are fighters, Frank will be getting better and better every passing day, I know I could say "don't worry" but I know from my own experience it is a useless advice :-))) Stay safe and well, Vix xxxxxxxx

  3. Glad your Frank is home, you must have known where he would go to recover! I too go into a flurry and get loads done if I am anxious. Yep, we too got the grant come through for the hubster so very pleased. I put my plants out for a sunbathe yest too. I would love to have the type of skin to sunbathe but alas I burn maybe if I factored up and just went out for a short while? this weather tempts me. Mind you I can't stay still for too long anyway. Like you said the other day I have never seen our garden looking so good, our homes are lapping up all this attentionxx

    1. Thanks so much! Isn't it funny how we react to tricky situtions in such different ways? I must have subconciously known Frank would seek refuge under the bed to have cleaned underneath it, it's defintely not something I'd have normally done!
What a shame you burn easily, it's so lovely to be out when the weather's lovely. You need a huge hat!
I'm still amazed about the ease of applying for and getting that grant! xxx

  4. Such a trauma when something happens to one of our family.!!! Good he is ok now. I realised that I was dribbling with drooling looking at your wardrobe, and had to reign myself in. A friend had a job back in the eighties of sewing and fixing up imported gear from India, so that they could be sold. Now I really don't know where they can be bought in NZ. Unless it's some obscure old op shop in the back of beyond. Never mind all the other fabulous gear that you have, Sigh.

    1. Thank you! The old Indian stuff is getting rarer and rarer, due in part to how fragile it is. I bet there are a few boxes of clothes imported from Indian in the 1970s still stashed away in a stockroom somewhere waiting to be discovered!
I haven't bought any clothes since lockdown but spotted an amazing 1970s Indian cotton Ikat kaftan on eBay yesterday and was amazed to win it for far less than that kind of thing normally sell for. That cheered me up a bit after the Frank trauma! xxx

    1. Thank you! Yes. Cat dentistry is eye-wateringly expensive. Mind you, all our dentists have been closed since lockdown, there's been cases lately where people have been forced to extract their own teeth! It comes to something when our pets can be attended to more quickly than a human.
Don't mention hedge trimming, I'm trying to ignore ours! xxx

I'm so envious of your gorgeous weather! I'm also coveting all those Lottas! What a veritable rainbow you have, Vix! I always keep a couple of pairs of boots out in my warm-weather wardrobe as it can go from a hot sunny day to wind and rain here at the drop of a hat.

We were supposed to be there now (sob) with a group of customers (we are motorcycle tour operators). I will have to wait until next year at least - we are doing a great job of eliminating the virus here in NZ but have been advised that international travel is some way off yet.

Summer is going to be very different this year, no festivals but for once in my life I won't be living out of a suitcase and can wear clogs and play around with headscarves, silver linings and all that!

  15. Ahh poor frank, Milo was doing this funny raspy thing with his mouth on Tuesday untill we realised he had a bit of bone gristle stuck between his teeth!! So I had to bloody fight with him to release this nightmare from him, he must have felt better afterwards as he sat on my lap all afternoon!
Sadly I can’t wear sandals as I have EDS and my feet look like they have been trapped in a vice ! Plus I am double jointed and my toes look weird ! I’m like you with your hip except my joints can dislocate quite easily and I can do circus/ party tricks!!!! With my joints.
Keep Jon away from teng tools as Paul was naughty and spent some pennies on a new wootist . I told him off so he has let me back on eBay ! And the other second hand websites !! Love the unicorn I have a felt narwhal my mum bought it for Xmas for me one year . I just wish he was bigger.
I am the clutter queen .!!!! just ask him indoors. Everyone goes wow when they enter my home as it has shelves full of gachapon! I will never ever grow up! Hell im 45 why should I! Take care both of you and I will have a gander at Barry M . Keep safe.

Double jointed toes? I'd love to see them. My elbows are like that, they freak people out and I like it!

    3. I understand your reluctance to use mobility aids. I have no problem with being looked at but used to hate having to rely on a stick as complete strangers would ask what I'd done or offer me lifts - kind but embarrasing.

  28. Poor Frank! And if dental work on cats in the UK costs what it does here, poor you! But it's healthcare money well invested because the procedure not only restores your furry friend's present good health but also serves to prevent heart disease when he's a venerable feline.
You might be amused by the advice some young (oldsters know better) American vets prescribe to avoid cats' dental issues: I disgraced myself when a Dr. X held up a toothbrush with a long handle and a few bristles and told me "Twice daily..." Actually, I think the patient laughed, too.

Odd that Dentists were closed down yet Liquor Stores remained open the whole time as Essential Businesses? Crazy World we're living in. You always inspire me with your flurry of activities and finding productive things to do around the Home and Garden!

    1. Thank you! It'll be a slow process but he's definiteoy brighter this morning.
It's the same here, dntists haven't been able to source adequate supplies of PPE so anyone in need has to go through a triage system within the NHS and, providing the problem is considered urgent, they're sent to an allocated hospital - often a two hour drive away. There's been reports on the news of people pulling out their own teeth in desperation. xxx

Love to see your Lottas collection looking like a rainbow! and I like the hanger you've installed on the cupboard door for them. Brilliant!

    1. Thanks, Monica! Frank's out of his hiding place and shouting to be let out, he must be feeling better!
I'm so happy we've got some lovely weather, it makes up for last week's cold and gloom and it's quite a relief, I've got nothing else left to clean! xxx

  32. I hate it when one of my cats has to be left at the vets, the house feels weird. I do what you do and keep busy, and I always shed a little tear of happiness when they come home. I'm glad Frank was returned to you safe and well, if a little shocked. I hope he's feeling a little better by now.

    1. It really does feel strange when on eof them is missing, isn't it? We're all walking about on tenterhooks, especially Stephen who still seems particularly spooked. xxxx

  33. Oh poor Frank I hope he's feeling a bit more Himself now. When we had Benjie she got to the point where she had so few teeth left we had to get sachets of wet cat food and still mash it right up for her. My Mum still has a few of those Iranian table cloths my Dad brought several back with him from when he went there in the 70's with the RAF.

    1. Thanks so much! He's doing really well now, he was wrestling Jon earlier and went to bite him and then realised his fangs were missing, we had to giggle! xxx

  34. Oh poor Frank! I'm glad he could at least come back home to recuperate. You make staying at home look glam-like a movie set.

    1. Thanks, Sam! I'm glad they were able to operate there and then rather than him having to come home and back again, it's traumatic enough as it is! xxx

  36. I bet Frank was a lot happier with his bad teeth out - our old cat, Boycie, was so much livelier after her dental work.
