The Distancing Diaries - Day 30 & 31

Sunday (day 30) started - as usual - with tea in bed, where we read and lounged with the cats until 8.30 when Jon went downstairs to start breakfast and I stripped and changed the bed. After we'd eaten our veggie sausage sandwiches I caught up on blog comments whilst Jon painted the French doors that lead out from his music room, taking photos of the new curtain with the doors open.

I was down to the last five pieces in my fabric stash and was a bit worried that the curtain would look a bit boring but I think I've got away with it.

In my last post, my friend Betty asked if she could see Jon's guitars. Here they are.

(Apparently, there's a few more but he didn't want you to think he had a problem!)

If only those guitars could talk, they'd tell a few tales!

 The Charlatans, circa 1990
Liquidy Headbox circa 1988 (Jon's in the Vogue tee)

Frank knows there are prawns defrosting on the kitchen windowsill so he won't leave Jon alone.

As welcome as the sun was, when I drew the curtains on Sunday morning, it didn't half show off the dust in the lounge so I gave it a good clean. I'm sure I only did this a few weeks ago (it was 20th March, I checked the blog archives), this housework lark is a full-time job!

After I'd pegged out the washing I inspected the greenhouse for signs of life.

The courgettes, onion and melon are all getting started but are so minuscule that I couldn't get a clear picture.

Jon thinned out the pepper seedlings on the windowsill whilst outside I replanted the cola bottle planter with parsley seeds, we'd had a visit from a cat that wasn't ours last night who'd managed to knock it over and displace the coriander seeds. I watered the patio pots in the sunshine and Jon pottered about around the garden, topping up the pond and checking that the squirrels hadn't made off with the fat balls on the chandelier (they hadn't!)

This week's lockdown nail paint is Barry M's, Green Berry.

I'm down to the dregs at the bottom of the bottle and had to add a few drops of nail varnish remover to thin it down a bit. The spiky silver-green shrub is a curry plant (helichrysum italicum), it's not edible but it smells incredible.

Although yesterday was sunny it was cold in the shade and I was glad of the jacket I'd grabbed at the last minute before we went for our daily walk.

WEARING: Vintage Anokhi block printed midi dress (eBay), Lotta from Stockholm clogs, vintage Gujarati amulet pendant

Back at Stonecroft, I brought the washing in off of the line and sat in the sunshine for a bit, joined by the cats. Frank couldn't keep his eyes open, he'd gorged on prawns.

Tea was Spanish-style butter beans with flatbread and salad. We watched Race Across The World and the first episode of Killing Eve...that ending was quite a surprise, wasn't it?

When I got up this morning I was excited to see that the artichokes and basil on the landing windowsill had started to sprout.

After my Wii Fit session and, while I waited for the tea to brew, I had a look online and saw that the garden centre we'd ordered our compost from had posted on Facebook that their website had just opened for orders on a first-come, first-served basis. With much excitement, I managed to snaffle some colourful perennials along with some pansies for my window boxes for delivery this week before they sold out. I tell you what, it was almost as big a thrill as I used to get from getting Glastonbury tickets - how times have changed!

We were running low on cat food so, after our usual weekday breakfast, Jon drove to the out-of-town pet superstore to stock up. I grabbed an old toothbrush & a bowl of soapy water, tucked my kaftan in my knickers and set about scrubbing the grime off these cast iron chairs I'd liberated from a neighbour's skip years ago.

I gave them a coat of Lovely Olive paint and left them to dry in the sunshine. They used to reside down by the pond but I thought they'd be better by the mirrored wall, it's a great little sun trap first thing in the morning.

I was so engrossed in my work that I never heard my friend Erica pop some of her surplus of seeds in the post box. Tomorrow, I shall be planting watercress, purple cauliflower and pink tomatoes.

Back from his cat food buying mission and after lunch, Jon transplanted some of the gherkin and lettuce seedlings to one of the cloches.

My grandparents bought my mum this Cotswold stone birdbath for her 21st birthday in 1963. It's resided in the border beneath the lounge window for a few years but, being so close to the house, only the bravest of the birds bother with it, namely the wood pigeons and magpies.

Wearing his lumbar support belt (yay!) Jon dragged it across the gravel to reposition it under our Indian Bean Tree (catalpa bignonioides), where the majority of our feathered visitors gather to eat.

On our walk yesterday I managed to liberate another couple of Euphorbia plants which I potted up this afternoon.

Our flag arrived! It's flapping away in the breeze, showing Stonecroft's support for the NHS (20% of the £7.95 price went to the NHS Charity).

It would have been a perfect day if the wind had dropped but I braved going for our walk minus a jacket anyway, we just kept to the sunny side of the street. I'm wearing the kaftan I had tailor-made in Jodhpur from the vintage sari Jon had bought me for my birthday.

Tonight we're having saag paneer with rice for tea and we're planning to start watching Fleabag on the BBC i-player (we're probably the last people in the UK to watch it!)

How are you doing in lockdown? What's keeping you occupied?

  1. Lockdown..More like Locked~up..! :).
Though l'm making a break for Lidl's in the
morning..don't need a lot, l'll just make it
up as l go along..! Bleach! That's the thing..!
    Bleach..! :).

I do like the idea of the mirrors on the wall...
I've thought about it myself..though it might be
a bit chilly in the winter when l need a shave...
    Great idea that..certainly different...!

The guitars are amazing, Jon has certainly looked
    after them..
And did you see back on March 1st..a guitar formerly
owned by Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison had
been valued at up to £400,000 on the BBC's Antiques
Roadshow..The guy who owned it, fell off his chair...!
Me! I just banged away on a set of drums..! HeHe! :).

The furry lads certainly love the sun, but, all cats
do don't they, and, if Frank gorged himself on prawns,
bless him, l expect he's feeling quite full..
My neighbour Fudge came round yesterday and helped me
consume a whole partridge..very nice to, and l finished
up drinking a whole bottle of vino..Hic! :).

Oh! And..you've got yer flag up and flying, looks good,
nice bit of wind to~day, mine's been flying at nearly
    90%...I like to see a flag..! :)

Best get on..Oh! My daughter is making me some face
masks..fed up with the medical sort, so she's making
me some 'pinky' ones..they will go with the rest of me..!
    As l always say.."Every street is a catwalk"...especially
    at Lidl's..! :O).

Later l'm having Spaghetti aglio e olio..One of my favourite
    pasta dishes..plain and simple..!
And to~night is the final of University Challenge..watched every
single one..how many questions have l got right..Don't ask..! :).

    1. There's a few desirable guitars in Jon's collection but not £400,000 or at least I don't think so. Maybe I need to lug them down to the Antiques Roadshow when it comes to town?
Hope Lidl wasn't too scary. I've heard a few people say that they're one of the worst for maintaining social distancing. You'll be needing a hazmat suit, never mind a pretty pink face mask!
      Take care, Willie. xxx

    2. I've just looked on line...Those Hazmat
suits only come in White, Yellow and Blue..
Not wearing a blue one, that's for sure! :(.

HeHe! Distancing in Lidl is o.k...I sit in my
trolly, it's much safer that way, though wearing
      a mask, does'nt help..people still know it's me..
      Wonder how..? :o).

And..did you see..Captain Tom Moore is being lined up
to perform with Michael Ball during the Britain's Got
Talent final..not that l watch it..
      Good old Capt Tom..What a hero..! :o).

    3. Have you posted Captain Tom's birthday card yet? I might pop on in the leterbox on my walk this afternoon. 33,000 cards so far. xxx

    4. Yes! All done..Sent him a funny one..
I only do funny ones..even when people
      die..
At my demise..No one..No one will be allowed
to attend wear a suit, collar and tie..and
you must be wearing summat pink..of course..!
After the service my body..all of it..will go
to Southampton hospital, as l've left it to
      science..To a Dr Frankenstein l believe..No! No!
Seriously though, all sorted through the HTA...
Hunan Tissue Authority..For 30yrs in my will, l
stated to be buried in the country church just
down the road, pink coffin..and so on..
      "I'm NOT paying ALL that"..Jeeese! :(.
So a couple years ago, l changed everything,
the money is better off in my daughters pocket,
      than some 'gravedigger' HeHe! :o)

  2. I love your sun trap and the chairs look fab! I had a similar set of 4 chairs and a table made of cast iron - so heavy - and painted them a deep dark green.I bought them for 60.00 in a second hand shop in Luton. Had them for years and gave them to someone when we bought a set that included a parasol.

The range of veg you're growing is amazing; you'll have to start selling it at the gate!

The curtains look fab and just look at Jon's guitars! There was an item about The Charlatans or one of their members last week on the One Sho; I think it was. I don't usually watch this programme and only caught the last 20 seconds or so of it.

I love your Anokhi dress and the caftan is lovely.

I think you might be able to order online from Superdrug - have you tried for your replacement Barry M? I need lipliner...

That's the whole problem with housework. It looks lovely when it's done but it has to be done again and again and again!

    Take care.

    1. It's been 30 years since the release of Some Friendly, The Charlatans biggest album, so Tim Burgess is popping up quite a bit on TV and radio. Let's hope it means more airplay and a big royalty cheque!
Sadly Superdrug are only doing Click and Collect with a lot of their products (including Barry M) which is a shame as delivery is free if you have a loyalty card and spend over a tenner. I've ordered a replacement from the Barry M website instead, they've warned it might take a bit longer to despatch than normal but I've got plenty of other colours to be getting on with! xxx

  5. Those patchwork curtains are gorgeous, and I loved seeing Jon's guitars. I was thinking that was quite a modest number, when you mentioned there are more :-) Frank and his prawn habit, though! I love the smell of curry plant, and might pick one up at the garden centre if they have them. I'm thrilled they have re-opened, but I'm not looking forward to the inevitable queuing and maneuvering around other people thing. Those cast iron chairs are fabulous, especially painted in lovely olive! What a marvellous thing to have found in a skip. The birdbath is a beauty too, as is that gorgeous kaftan. xxx

I saw on the news that Belgium's garden centres had reopened but we both commented that the clip they showed on the BBC didn't look like the shoppers were observing social distancing. Those curry plants are fab though, low maintenance and so pretty when the yellow flowers come out. xxx

  6. Yes the curtains are really nice. I love hearing stories of people's lives past and present, and Jon's sounds really interesting (as does yours btw) It is so exciting to a new gardener when all the shoots come up. I had a big vegetable and herb garden for a few years, and I so miss it now, I have nowhere to dig a garden. But hey, my home is lovely so I guess that offsets it.

  7. Vix...love your colorful outdoor area, should say areas....the entire outdoor surrounding your home so beautiful, as is your interior of your home. I love, love, color! Makes a person feel cheerful and smile a lot! Does Jon still jam with his group the Charlatans? I love guitar music, I still have my old acoustic Silvertone I bought 43 years ago for $15.00 at an outdoor flea market. I still love it. My brother and sister play guitars and other instruments, many great family memories thru the years. You and Jon sure have green thumbs, looks like every seed ya'll touch sprouts, that is wonderful. We are suppose to have some rain coming in the next couple of days so I will be inside, which will be good to catch up on stuff!Stay healthy and safe

How lovely to still have a silvertone guitar. I'm completely tone deaf.
Hope you manage to catch up with indoors stuff whilst it's been raining, it's another lovely day here - just a bit on the breezy side - the washing's out and I'll be playing in the garden once I'm dressed! Take care, Chrystal! xxx

We give Vizzini a bit of tuna water (from the can) but that's the only human food he ever gets...aside from the bits of popcorn he snags when they tumble off me late at night!

Love Race around the World - if I won I would share the win money with the other contestants so we could do it all again in reverse direction! I'm keeping busy with a multitude of Projects that I never quite finish so I've got them all in various stages of In Process.

  26. Oooo, the curtains are wonderful! The only "people food" Sylvester gets is a bit of fresh-cooked chicken (he will only eat it if it's warm, not spoiled at all..) and a bit of ham occasionally as treats. He LOVES tuna water, but not the actual tuna. They all have their own idiosyncrasies.

    1. Thanks, Shelley!
How funny that Sylvester likes the tuna water but not the tuna. Frank will eat anything excpet cheap cat food that is until Jon takes it outside for the foxes and he soon gobbles it up. Stephen Squirrel only ever ate cat biscuits until 4 years ago, when he started eating wet cat food. He hates human food (other than a ginger biscuit dunked in tea!) xxx

  27. The curtain is beautiful, nothing you make could be boring at all! A great way to use up your stash. I have started very, very slowly to do a few projects from my stash. Not as skilled as yours, I last attempted patchwork in junior school, so that is over 30 years ago!

Chris was interested to see Jon's guitars. A nice looking collection there. We've got banjos here as well as guitars. Double trouble!

Looking beautiful as ever in that Anokhi dress.

    1. Thank you! Sometimes I get really harrassed when I start a patchwork project, rushing to get it finished. I had all the time in the world to make this curtain and managed to do it faster than usual!
I bet you've got some cracking guitars and banjos. I'd love to see them. xxx
