Border Crossing - Kinky Takes A Trip

Saturday took us to Wales' fine capital city, Cardiff and, due to last weekend's camera cock-up, I was able to get away with wearing the same dress for work twice in a row. From the house of high-end designer Ricci Michaels of Mayfair, I bought it from Vintage Relics, our neighbours at the End of the Road festival. It got loads of love on each outing.

The British Heart Foundation* bag Jon was carrying in Friday's blog photo contained the Savile Row shirt (with cuff-links still attached) he's wearing.

*We're not environmentally irresponsible, we'd already filled the two cloth bags we'd taken with us and had no choice!

Em was visiting her lovely mum and popped into Cardiff's magnificent Portland House to see us. Check out the she gave me. Does she remind you of anyone? She took pride of place on the Kinky pitch all day. I think she brought us luck.

As she came from Wales she's staying close to Sir Tom (this was his second album, A-Tom-Ic Jones, released in 1966).

Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair in Cardiff was phenomenal. Customers turned up in their thousands and business was brilliant. As we discovered at Kaya, the Welsh really appreciate their true vintage.

Portland House is Grade II listed building, a former bank built in 1927 and recently restored (full history and great photos HERE). Belinda, one of the team who work there, took me on a tour of the amazingly atmospheric underground vaults which play host to a nightclub.

Clockwise from top left: Three x 1960s duffel bags; Crimplene jacquard blazer; Denim cropped jacket; psychedelic chiffon maxi;1970s wool cape; 1970s buttercup yellow midi; Cropped puppy tooth jacket; 1970s STAX midi; Green print maxi; psychedelic midi; Tissavel fake fur; Geo-print maxi skirt; Crochet waistcoat; Psychedelic maxi skirt (now Em's!); 1960s scooter dress; 1970s floral midi; Astraka fake fur; Psychedelic penny collar 1960s tunic, Purple maxi dress

We'd had a bumper week of vintage finds and sold a lot of them on Saturday. The orange chiffon maxi is a keeper!

Clockwise from top left: Cuban Guayabera shirt; Suede belted coat; Leather brogues; 1950s fedora; 1960s tweed suit; Camel overcoat; Slip-on platform loafers; Campri 1970s windcheater; Cashmere & wool car coat; Green leather blazer; Campri 1970s windcheater; 1950s fedora; Cue by Austin Reed belted raincoat, 1980s leopard print leisure shirt.
As most of South Wales seemed to be in the buying mood it rubbed off on us, too.

I treated myself to this 1970s Pippa Dee beach dress (quick drying nylon with padded boobs) and fringed & studded 1960s suede waistcoat from the fabulous Make Do and Vintage.

Jon harnessed his inner Starsky and snapped up this Icelandic knit cardi.

We're joining Judy's again this weekend, trading at Bethnal Green in London on Sunday. I'd better go shopping, those gaps on our rails need filling.

See you soon!

Linking to Patti's Visible Monday.

  6. That maxi is fantastic, the colours are perfect for now. I love the doll. Very stylish. That's great you had such a good day. They have the "Judy's" fairs up here too but I have never been to one yet. Pippa Dee, wasn't that a sort of event like a Tupperware party? I think I remember going with my Mum to one of them when I was tiny. Anyway, your dress and waistcoat combo is great. Jon's cardi looks really toasty an I lichees tweed trousers. Hope that London is a sell-out. Xx

  7. You have a mini-Vix!! Surely she has to accompany you everywhere now? What an array of goodies too - both sold and bought.

  8. Rosalind took the words right out of my mouth - Mini Vix! Love that she's cuddling up to Tom Jones too :)

Loving your dress (though that canary yellow one is proving most distracting at work).

Hoping to get down to the Clapham Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair - hopefully I can come and say hi! xxx

  10. Wow you always seem to have the most wonderful outings at this fairs and events, Wales sounds like it was gangbusters for you and Jon. I love the haul you showed off, off course I'm pining over the maxi skirts, can never get enough! Loving your frock and the fringed waistcoat, I've got one on hold for a the next week to two to check over at an upcoming event. I'm rather keen to add a fringed suede one to my wardrobe! I hope you and Jon are both well!

  13. I'm so glad the weekend went so well! It's interesting how some communities appreciate vintage more than others.

What a gorgeous building. The whole thing must have been so much fun. You guys have enviable jobs, although I don't loose sight of how much work you put in to make it go as well as you do. You certainly make it look effortless and really fun, in spite of all the work though, and always both look so well put together.

I love the new pieces both of you found -- funny that each of you shopped for opposite seasons. And, of course, the Vix doll is excellent!

  14. The venue is glorious! And that doll - could it be any more perfect?

  15. Fabulous venue. Leeds town hall were we went was amazing. I did pick up off a few traders that the main audience was students so maybe not one for the Kinky gang ??
Your Pippa Dee dress has great colours and pattern to it.
When I was 21 I wore Pippa Dee knickers & bra as a bikini on my first holiday abroad without the parents. I've got a pic somewhere. Xxx

  19. You're both looking great...Jon is looking especially dapper.

That is brilliant you have a look alike doll : )

  21. Oh Pippa Dee parties in the 70's.. Remember them well. Cheese cubes and Pineapple cubes on cocktail sticks ,ha ha. Very "Abigail's Party ". Their stuff was a bit pricey but really well made. You felt like you had to buy something as you were in a friends house and what she got as a present depended on how many sales she made.

  22. You got a great haul this week, how could I have forgotten all about Pippa Dee?....and that frock I had, very similar to your purple maxi.
The frock you wore in Wales is bloody fabulous and look at you in the garden.... bare arms and thrups on display while Jon's wrapped up in his cardy. I think it's highly likely that I will have a hangover this Sunday, if not, you might see me at Bethnal Green. xxx

  23. "Bare arms and thrups on display" - Fiona makes me laugh!
Oh that psychedelic maxi is divine, wear it as often as you like - I would! Jon's got his City Gent on with his Savile Row shirt and velvet jacket - such a dude! Lovely to see darling Em rocking the Docs, and the doll she gave you bears an uncanny resemblance - Tom definitely would, the randy old bugger!
So pleased you had a stonking day's trading - your stock is so fab, I'm not surprised. The maxi skirt Em bought is a beauty, and that yellow midi is simply gorgeous. Basically, I love all your stuff, if it would fit me, I'd have the bloody lot.
Your Pippa Dee frock is lovely, and Jon-as-Starsky made me smile - that makes you Hutch, love, I'm sorry to say...
Will you be back from London in time for our X Factor text fest on Sunday? Hope so - love you! xxxxx

  24. Loving the dress and just like Curtise I love the yellow midi too.

Em's got her Docs on - lush. x

  29. Wheee! A Vix doll! How cute.
You look about 12 in your padded bra dress!
Jon goes from sooo cool in his Saville Row shirt, to huggable in his cardy ;-)
    Great buying! Xo Jazzy Jack

  30. How cool - you now have a "Mini-Me" (well, mini-you)! You look like a time-traveller from the early 70's in that padded cup maxi and fringed vest. Jon is just killer in the Starsky sweater - is there anything he doesn't look good wearing?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Fuck yeah, dazzling the Welsh like no ones business! Love the frock, and I am obsessing over that necklace with the second frock!
    Love HelgaXXXXXXXXXXX

  32. Looking gorgeous, and Jon is as dapper as always! Your stock is so fabulous, and I'm glad you treated yourself to something. After all, you have to enjoy the spoils too. :-)

  33. Jon's cardi look SO SNUGGLY! I want one too!! Also both your frocks are FABULOUS!! I love the amazing colour of that first one, seriously, why are modern clothes so lacking in colour? I love the second frock too....such a great 70s frock. I feel like now its daylight savings I should go back to trying to take regular outfit photos, its been a while....also your wee doll is amazing and glad to hear you had a great days trading xo

  34. I so very nearly went to Judy's fair but decided I had too much cleaning and tidying to do around the house, I wish I'd gone now as we could have met in person!! Oh well, there will be more vintage fairs (and to be honest I'm penny pinching a bit after the wedding and honeymoon extravaganza!!). Love your buys, it would have been rude not to xx

    ReplyDelete
  35. ADORE jon's big lebowski sweater!!!! you look stunning! x

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well that was a lovely fair and I all I heard was how fab Kinky is from passing punters and from the people we chatted with. You were starting to get very busy there. The Welsh loves Kinky.

Glad Yvonne is behaving and if she did meet Tom in real life, she would be off like a greased whippet. You'll have to watch that one!
I love my maxi THIS much. My mum picked that out for me...who'da thunk it? Love your Pippa Dee number too and Jon's cardi...proper old skool.
Proper fab to see you both and glad it went so well. How could it not though?
    See you in a bit!
    Loves ya.

  37. Look at that doll! Yes, she does remind me of someone. An English Vixen Bombshell!
Love Jon's sweater. Those were so popular here in the 70's. We skipped school to ride the bus into down town to buy one at the public market. I still remember the cozy smell they have. I'm sad that I gave mine away years ago. I've wanted another one lately too.

  38. Fabulous cardi..... where in Bethnal Green??x

  39. Ohhhh Vix. You are glorious in the Ricci Michaels maxi. The colors, along with your smile, are perfect with my morning coffee. And Jon is so handsome in his Savile Row shirt. The two of you must turn heads wherever you go! Best of luck in London this weekend!

  40. that doll does resemble you!!!!
That was a great event, so much to see, wow,
you look amazing in that dress with the beach dress with padded boobs ( lol ), the color is so different for you and the vest looks beautiful with it,, you do shine in gold,
Jon's sweater is so cosy, beautiful!! they are both a keeper!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ha ha that is so Starsky!! Love the beach dress and suede waistcoat! x

    ReplyDelete
  42. What a haul! I don't wear buttercup yellow; however, I'd consider trying on that yellow maxi. Jon's Icelandic sweater looks like the sort of "emergency gear" one should store in Gilbert in case the weather takes a turn. Very cosy!

  43. I am happy when people appreciate and buy your treasures and you will have fun! This must be a really interesting and fun! The doll is adorable and the dress she wears in the last photo is fantastic!

  47. Wow, you're selling up a storm, thanks to the good people who love vintage. I see visions of India dancing over your head. I just love that first photo of you in the psychedelic maxi dress. Gorgeous. And what a cool good luck doll. Yes, soon they'll be in all the stores.
