What To Wear On A Long Haul Flight (If You're Me)

Heaven forbid I'd ever dream of giving anyone advice about what to wear! This is my choice, vintage all the way. My travel outfit has to cope with a lot - travelling to the airport in torrential rain and sub zero temperatures, the ferocious a/c on the Air India flight, looking suitably modest for transferring at Delhi and landing in 35 degrees of sunshine 19 hours after leaving home.

Then, after a taxi ride, we'll be wandering the first village that takes our fancy in search of accommodation. So my outfit has to look respectable enough to get us a room in a nice house.

After we've found somewhere to stay, dumped our bags, showered and changed then we'll go and have a sunset dip before feasting on fiery veg curries washed down with a couple of ice cold Kingfisher beers followed by, I imagine, an early night.

As we don't have a base, backpacking around South Goa (and possibly further afield), we've got to travel light and I can't be do with lugging around any excess weight. My holdall weighs in at 12kgs. (My travelling outfit has to earn its keep, so both the dress and fringed wrap will be worn during our trip. I don't bother wearing any make-up, as you can probably tell.

Up until several years ago I travelled in sandals, that was until we transferred at Charles de Gaulle and I had to trudge through 8 inches of snow to board the connecting flight. Never again! These Kurt Geiger beauts were £4.99 from a charity shop back in the Summer (when nobody else wants boots) , they're light enough to chuck in my bag and forget about for a month and easy to kick off when we go through immigration.

In my carry-on bag I've packed my e-reader along with a change of clothes and a bikini just in case our luggage goes astray. Also in there is my jewellery, the dregs of some Vitamin E moisturiser, lip balm, a comb, a hair band, tissues and a sarong to wrap round if I need extra warmth. I'll through my purse, camera and toothbrush in there just before we leave.

After a year of knowing exactly where we're going to be week in and week out I'm so excited about having no plans whatsoever. No room booked, no itinerary, no plan. I'm not even sure whether we'll even stay in Goa. Let the adventure begin!

Vintage Osti maxi (dearest Helga), 1970s fringed wrap (charity shop, 2011), Kurt Geiger boots, Ganesh tote (the lovely Yvonne)
Plenty of jewellery to detract from my scarily naked face.

See you in February!

  4. You'll be the best dressed on the plane! A change of clothes is very wise - I once spent 8 days out of 14 with nothing except what I was wearing on the flight out due to lost luggage, so a change of clothes and underwear is recommended! Have a wonderful time. xx

  13. I think I may just have sighed audibly - in envy at your (lack of) prospective itinerary. You and Jon are such incredibly hard workers that it's also lovely to think of you both reclining on a beach somewhere when I'm wheeling my bike through puddles over the next few days.
We'll all look forward to seeing and hearing of your adventures come February. And lord I wish I could learn your art of extreme lightweight packing!

  15. Not at all scary - just a beautiful naked face! And the rest of you will soon be following suit, apart from a bit of string and the odd triangle of fabric, love!
You and Jon are old hands at this, and you know what works for you, so I'm sure you'll have a good journey, and I know you'll have a brilliant time. See where the wind blows you, and enjoy. I'll be here when you get back, keeping your unique space in the blogosphere warm for you and looking forward to seeing and hearing all about your adventures!

i would do exactly the same - light luggage, versatile clothes, comfy shoes (summer boots are perfect for that) and not bothering with makeup. and a wrap for the plain of cause. i remember times when airlines provided plaids on long flights....
wish you and jon a wonderful time in india!!!!

  26. That outfit is beautiful! The orange, lilac, and yellow floral print of your vintage Osti maxi-dress looks amazing showing through your gorgeous lacy blue 1970s fringed wrap top is a beautiful look. The weather here in the NorthEastern United States has been freezing, and those warm beaches you're prepared for (with the pretty swimsuits) look especially inviting. Being the experienced traveler that you are I'm sure you prepared yourself to add and remove layer as required to cope with those big temperature changes. Having fiery vegetable curries sounds yummy and like it will probably clear your and Jon's sinuses. It looks like you'll be having another wonderful adventure. Enjoy your vacay!

  28. You are a nomad...and very adventurous at that. I would not do well with not knowing where I will lay my head the first night. I did that all the time when I was younger, now I need to know that my first night is looked after so I can just crash without needing to look for something.

Your ability to be so zen about it all is probably why you still look so young and fresh.

Also kudos for your packing ability. I would never ever be able to pack so light.

Have a brilliant trip! I know you will.

    bisous

  32. Safe journey!

Nothing wrong with the outfit, I travel in a long skirt as well.

Far more comfortable than skin tight jeans!

I'm figuring out my "look" for a month in Spain and Malts.

So looking forward to leaving the cold and snow. Nothing is worse than leaving -36C and arriving in Mexico to 36C. The body (and hair) just doesn't know what to do!

  38. As the hail lashes down here in Chichester I wish you a very happy holiday.

I travel light. I read about some easy wash that a teaspoonful washes the undies and a dress! I also like dry quickly items - not a problem in 35 degrees!

You look good enough to eat in your travel outfit!

I like your chappal sandals - am looking for a pair myself at the mo- they look comfy. Have a fabulous time.
