Go Big Or Go Home

There's something fabulously bad ass about big hair. Its showy & trashy and the ultimate two finger salute to those who advocate age appropriate hair-dos. Who wants to blend in when you can stop traffic?

I've always wanted huge hair and its taken the best part of 48 years to achieve it. There's no way I'm toning it down now. In fact, if I have my way, it'll get longer and wilder as the years pass.

Big haired beauties: Sharmila Tagore, Barbra Streisand, Amy Winehouse, Bollywood H Bomb Helen and Priscilla Presley

I'm not one for half measures. If I'm going to do something then I give it 100%. Going dark meant dying my natural blonde hair jet black; wearing jewellery is a ring on every finger, shoulder-grazing earrings and bangles halfway up my forearms; make-up is just that, neither subtle or discreet, its lurid and neon and obvious; dressing in vintage means just that, no look-a-likes or high street alternatives.

Loud prints shouldn't be toned down. Psychedelia demands to be noticed. Neutrality deadens the impact.

If its worth doing then its worth overdoing....

This is my popping to Lidl outfit. Its a quiet day for us, recuperating from a hectic weekend, getting ready for a full-on few days of hunting down fresh stock to replace the masses we sold and the inevitable washing & repairing in readiness for another crazy double vintage weekender (see HERE).

Wearing: 1960s Tricel catsuit, Vintage 70s leopard fabric platform boots (both Ebay), 1950s fake leopard coat (Age UK), 1950s woven tub chair (liberated from a skip about 20 years ago)
See you soon!

  7. If that is all your own hair I am so,so jealous. No matter how much I tease my hair it will never go like that.

That coat looks like it was ripped off the back of Mrs. Robinson...one of the all-time sexy icons, mind you, you are giving her a run for her money with all your feline vivaciousness.

You need to write a book, about how to age with quiet grace and dignity...

    ; P

But seriously...you do need to write a book.

If it's worth doing, then it's worth overdoing...

  14. Err, don't you think it's time for a camel round neck sweater and some nice black trousers? Maybe with a blazer. And pearls. And a kitten heel.
    No?
Well, thank heavens for that then, keep doing why you 're doing, darling, cos you look bloody fantastic! You are a vision of fuck-off massive hair, wild print and leopard, and you just wouldn't look like you without your make up and bastard jewellery. It's your style, and you totally rock it.
Is that some extra hair from the Asian shop you've got going on? It looks very Priscilla Presley, just gorgeous!
I wish I could do Big Hair but it just doesn't grow long anymore (I blame the terrible treatment I subjected it to in the 80s...) so I stick to being a redhead and hope that's enough. Here's to being big and bold and not giving a tinker's cuss what anyone thinks!
    Love you! xxxxx

  19. Your boots are reminding me of the leopard maxi dress I tried on in a chazza today, but didn't buy because it had the longest arms and the tiniest neckhole -- I think it must have been made for a mutant gorilla (now I have an image of a gorilla in a leopard-print maxi dress and I can't stop laughing!)

  20. Big hair is SEXY hair. I went as Winehouse a few Halloweens ago (and 100lbs ago) and I made the hair do from two of my moms clip in hair pieces and piled them nice and high. I felt like a friggin goddess with that giant Winehouse hair!!

  22. Looking fabulous as always, Vix. Love the big hair and you wear it so well. It was really wonderful to meet you and Jon on Saturday, you are both even more stylish and gorgeous 'in the flesh' than you are in your photos.

  25. Big hair. Aaaaa! I go crazy for it. I've tried big hair on my short hair but without white go-go boots I risk looking like a hair salon visit gone too right for a housewife with beige elastic pants. There's nothing like the transfixing vixing you get with your hair. Everything is perfect, right down to the chair.

  26. Amy Winehouse did have fabulous hair. Viva big hair!

  28. I am laughing out loud to the "popping to Lidl" reference, absolutely bloody brilliant!! Your hair is super duper, I struggle to get mine that big. One of your pics did remind me of Barbara Streisand, and then I scrolled down and there was the very pic I was thinking of! x

  29. Age appropriate hair? What is that? haha. I love the big hair, definitely worthy of stopping traffic! xx

  33. I do wish I had 'big hair' I like the back combed 60s hairdos, they were feminine and interesting - I think we all wash our hair too much these days too.

  34. And there was I last week, wistfully wondering if purchasing a wiglet and having it custom-dyed would be "too much" ... Bless you, Vix!

  35. Big hair for the win! I love your hair, and of course your confident approach to it. I use hairpieces to give my fine hair more volume and I think of them as accessories, just like jewelry. xox

  36. Your outlook and outfits are a perfect match. LOVE big hair on you. I agree with Suzanne and I am already in line to buy your book titled: If it's Worth Doing it's Worth Overdoing

  37. Your big hair looks freakin' fantastic! I love these photos and the sentiment behind the post. Sure I dress much more conservatively than you do, but you're such an inspiration and I think of you every time I put on at least one true vintage item with every outfit. xo

  38. Classic. I love it on you too, and it's exactly right for your personal style ... all suits you to a T!
I can speak with authority on this as I lived through the original era as an adult. You look better than most women who sported it, then and who attempt it now. Exactly, precisely perfect hair.

  39. Your'e so cool Vix. I live vicariously through you, because you live your life with no excuses! You're hair looks great as always. :-)

  40. Oh Vix you so can do BIG HAIR!! I am with you, I intend to let my hair grow to the ground now, I have done the short in between long and now I am going all out. You have been one of my inspiring woman to just let go and be ME! So thanx!!

  41. I love big hair and yours looks just super! Thankfully I can really fluff my curls up when I wear it down, which caused many a frown amongst the WWII crowd I know when they saw me out of events. They said my hair was "too Pre-Raphaelite" ... how can hair ever be TOO Pre-Raphaelite?

  42. Amen to that you look fab. My hair is rather ahem unkempt, I've never straightened the natural curl in it and never will. As I have to wear glasses I always go for the bigger the better look, why try to be discreet, to me it's better to go LOOK AT THE SIZE OFF MY GLASSES !!

  43. Love big hair!! In the South there is a saying... "The higher the hair, the closer to God!" I'm an atheist, but I understand the emotion behind it lololol

  44. I think I spy an enduring Vix's-own-motto: "if it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing". Brilliant.
Nearly lost a mouthful of coffee, snorting over your casual description of this being a 'popping to Lidl outfit, on a quiet day.' Just proves your other motto - about any day not spent dressing up being a wasted day.

  45. Now come help me style my hair like that! Love it.

  46. i love that you go big! never stop going bigger! I have to use a rat for my hair but as they say, the higher the hair the more hairspray or some such...

  47. Yes, you and Sarah are the Queens of Big Hair. It definitely suits your personality and your wardrobe. I will have to live out my hair fantasies through you as I will never, ever have big hair. It will be colourful, but not big.

  48. I do hate the term age appropriate! Why someone decided that we shouldn't do things above a certain age is beyond me, life is for living and having fun. The big hair looks just perfect on you, so naturally 'you' that it took me a minute to realise you didn't always wear your hair like this! I love your "I don't care" attitude, I'm a bit of a wallflower and find it so inspiring.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Working it and owning it! I love how you are sat there in that chair looking all devil may care and beautiful with your frankly amazing outfit on. Yeah, just popping to Lidl, people. Casual genius. I think somebody has had a bit of a trip to our favourite wig shop! What a fab hairdo. Love big hair. I'm a bit of a Priscilla fan girl, she wore some cracking outfits, make up and hairdos. Oh and Barbara in What's up Doc? Just perfect. Woohoooo, you're coming to Nottingham!!! Xxxx
