Fair Play

A couple of weeks ago I had an email from Elisa. She reads my blog and asked if I'd like a chiffon maxi dress and cape professionally made for her Mum back in the 1970s. I nearly died of excitement when it arrived. As it had been made to measure it needed a few adjustments to fit but with a very welcome free afternoon I managed to get it sorted.

I thought Vintage Village at Stockport would be its ideal first outing, creating an illusion of sunshine on a miserably wet day (and I'm sharing it with the gang over at Patti's Visible Monday, too). The gloomy weather certainly didn't put the punters off, we were just as busy as usual.

That's our pitch being raided on the left. That beautiful blonde in the blue mini dress was spoilt for choice with our range of 1960s frocks.

Wearing: Vintage Aquascutum blazer, Diesel Gold label waistcoat, Tootal cravat, jumbo cords (altered into skinnies by Jon), Vintage 1970s cherry red Docs (all from charity shops, car-boots and jumble sales)
We found time to pose!

A Stuart Thornley masterpiece!

And to treat ourselves to cake fish and chips,

I snaffled this groovy dressmaking pattern.

...and couldn't resist this gorgeous Polly Peck maxi dress from Garbo Antiques £5 rail. We also had a slap-up takeaway Bengali dinner of three bean curry, pilau rice, pakora and veg samosas from Caarma Curries (but we were too hungry to stop and take photos when we got home last night!)

Sarah, one half of the team behind Vintage Village, submitted this article to the swanky Vintexplorer magazine...we're in print!

Can you believe that we've only got one other event booked for August? The festival we were due to work at next weekend has been cancelled so we're free. Do we go camping, find another event or stay at home and do sod all? My life seems to have been booked up in advance for months. Its quite exciting to have options.

In the meantime I've vintage stock to track down, more thrilling parcels to share, 30 unread blog posts and the incredible BBC drama An Honourable Woman, to catch up on.

See you soon!

Well done for smiling and selling in Stockport, despite the rain, and hurray for being featured looking fab in Vintagexplorer.

  4. Bloody gorgeous frock love, you look ravishing in it, as you do in everything. (not that I'm bitter or anything! much) Loving the colour of Jon's groovy altered cords, what a clever bloke. Can't believe you snaffled that fabulous Polly Peck for a fiver, it's stunning. I'd take a look at next weekend's forecast first before setting off to a campsite, although I know you'd make the best of it whatever the weather.

  8. If I saw that article on the Vintage Village with the photo of you and Jon I would have made the trek just to meet the pair of you. The Polly Peck maxi was a great score, and I can already picture you in the nehru collar tunic and flares from the pattern. That was so sweet of Elisa to send you her mother's dress. She knew it would be happy living with you!

Enjoy your free weekend, whatever you do. XO

  19. Congratulations on being featured in the Aug?Sept 2014 issue of Vintage Explorer. Kudos to Sarah for submitting the article That photo of you and Jon is fabulous - and what a cheery smile you have in it! You were obviously right - the Vintage Village at Stockport does have the illusion of being lit up by sunlight. I would never have guessed the weather outside was gloomy had you not mentioned it. Are those beautiful silver daisies with gold centres I'm spying on the Polly Peck maxi dress? I've never watched the BBC drama "An Honorable Woman". I'll have to check to see if they have it on NetFlix here in the U. S.. Your chiffon maxi-dress and cape are beautiful. Enjoy your options.
P.S.: If you do happen to stop by my blog please don't feel any need to read the entire horrendously long rant on discrimination and censorship in my latest post titled "Thank You To Commenters, Rant On Discriminatory Social Media Censorship and YouTube Slander" - I got carried away, and I'm sure you'll have plenty to do and read even with only one other event booked (so far) in August.

  30. Inspecting Jon's self-tailored ensembles reminds one how sadly drably most men dress themselves! Here in the Midwest, it's a logo tee with cargos and flipflops for casual; a plain tee with jeans and flipflops with socks for formal.

The chiffon float is a cloud corralled with a belt -- and may we have a closer look at the dark patterned maxi you're wearing in the feature pix?

  31. Ooh, they sell Vintage at Most Marvellous, I think! I'll snaffle a copy next time I'm down.

Jon is an inspiration for other men out there. Vintage is not just for gals(say I sitting here in my men's secondhand leather jacket). How lovely to have a breathing space in your diary. Congrats on being in print! Can't wait to see what fun fabric you choose to make your pantsuit out of. Is that bad English? Anyway, who cares! XO JJ

  47. congrats, you both look great in that magazine!
reading in that article, that 'vintage is more than 40s and 50s' sounds pretty funny to me ... here in germany the word 'vintage' stands for every decade being younger than the 90s ... and for sure you mostly find clothes from the late 60s-early 90s in the shops that call themselves 'vintage' here in berlin. is this 40s/50s thing that big in GB?

Anyhow ... your new chiffon 70s gown looks delicious on you!

  48. My mum had a dress like the Polly Peck one. She used to wear it to the "dinner dance" in the 70's.
