Grumpy Old Woman

I've reached an age when I get an almost perverse amount of pleasure from getting annoyed by trivialities. You'll often find me scrutinising the seams of dresses in Marks & Spencer and tutting over the shoddy way they've been made, harrumphing about the outrageous price of new stuff in shops and my favourite pastime, buying a newspaper every weekend only to screw it up and chuck it in the recycling bin in utter disgust hours later.

Its usually The Measure that causes the most outrage, a feature in The Guardian highlighting the current style hits and misses. This week trainers and American Tan tights are hot and huge, doughnut shaped topknots are a massive no-no.

As someone who, pre-hip replacement, suffered the indignity of orthopaedic footwear & built-up shoes for years, the day I go out in a pair of sports shoes will be the day I end up in an institution. As for American Tan tights, over my cold, dead body.

There's nothing like being told something is "out" to make me crave it all the more. Since Saturday I've been sporting a bastard massive topknot on a near-daily basis. Buns rock. They are perfect for lazy girls like me who, at a push, wash their hair a couple of times a week, can't be arsed doing their roots and can't be bothered with battling the hairbrush when the car boot sale starts at
stupid o'clock on a Sunday morning.

Label from today's dress
Yes, Guardian fashion team, you stay "hot" in your trainers and granny tights, I'll do my own unfashionable thing, ta very much.

Wearing 1970s vintage evening dress (Courtesy of Valerie), fake Litas (off the market), chandelier earrings (Colaba Causeway, Mumbai)
If you fancy being as "out" as me you'll find my doughnut bun tutorial HERE.
See you soon!

  1. American tan tights are 'hot'? Oh my, they will forever speak to me of my nan and her pancake make up! I get somewhat annoyed when I see something I like to wear has become fashionable and all the people who made fun of me in the street are suddenly sporting the exact same thing.

I love your hair like this and really love your outfit xxx

  2. Well said! Shall join you in wearing a bun when my hair gets a bit longer. At the moment I can do a smaller version! Your frock is outstandingly beautiful, far far better than tan anything!

  3. Good on you Vix! Tan tights....Errrr no! Thats my granny not me.

Who wants to fit in with crowd? I'd rather just be me.

  5. As long as it isn't 'buns of steel' on yer 'ed (me son)!
When I had hair as long as yours I used to wear a big topnot to the side-front; I wonder now...did it look like a hair beret?????

  9. Tee hee! My favourites are bad manners and slow walkers. I make the same noise as Marge Simpson when i encounter them. I'm out in the fashion desert with you and your top knot, having sported one myself last week. American tan, who are they kidding? They must think we are fools! Over my cold, dead body indeed. That's another beauty of a frock you are doing wonderful justice to there Vix! Xxxxxxxx

  10. Your dress is incredible Vix, I just love it. I think this may be my favourite outfit of yours! I can't believe they are saying american tan tights are 'in'. I had to wear them when I did dance shows as a child and I hated them, you certainly won't catch me wearing them now! x

  11. Brava, Vix. I laughed aloud at the newspaper crumpling bit. I usually can't get past the front page of our on-line papers before I am harrumphing like an old fart (maybe I am?). Love your skirt, hair and all the other pieces! xox

  12. What's the matter with the kids of today? American tan tights never were and never will be cool. I don't think I'm in grumpy old woman territory just yet but my husband is definitely a grumpy old man. I'm not allowed to eat cereal near him as the spoon banging the bowl drives him mad. His brother wants to murder a co worker who scrapes her yoghurt pot out with a teaspoon as she nears the end. It takes all his willpower not to shout, ''YOU'VE FINISHED IT!!!''
    Everyone's got their annoyances...xxx

  13. Good lord, that Guardian feature is bloody hilarious, isn't it? I pass my gaze over the fashion features in the Saturday supplement and snort derisively. American tan tights and trainers? Mmm, lovely. No thank you.
You look amazing with your hair up in a topknot, and the dress from Valerie is a real beauty.
Anyway, I don't think it's being grumpy to know that the whole idea of fashion trends is ridiculous, and that anyone who is swayed by the shite peddled by fashion editors must be dim or have no ideas of their own. It's not grumpy to delight in quality and originality either. And if it is - I'm grumpy too!
    Love ya! xxxx

  16. You always look fantastic doing your own thing Vix. I love that blouse (yes, I am one to consistently like black clothes!)

As for trainers, I've not mentioned it on my blog, but I am in need of foot surgery (and am in line to have it but must wait until freaking November). It's for a stupid and annoying problem resulting from a sprain a couple of years ago. And damn if I've not been able to wear my nice shoes and have been forced into the trainers and flats for two years now. So have mercy on me when you see my outfit posts. lol, I know you are a dear person and would never not be kind about my choice of footwear, but I wanted you to know that if I could, I sure as heck would!! As for tan tights, if you mean tan coloured opaque tights ... blechhh.

  17. Fuck off fashion. Happy to be forty and unfashionable then.

I like having top knots too. I'll have one if I want.

No American tan tights or trainers. Never. Trainers are sports shoes for fucking sport. American tan are just fucking ugly.

Why did you make me read that Vix? I'm all sweary now.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I was feeling like a grumpy old woman until I read this. You give me hope Vix, you really do! :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. You tell 'em, Vix! One look at you, and they'd have to eat their words! Seriously, they should hire you to do their fashion news. (By the way, my hair is about as long as it's ever been, but still not long enough to do the top knot thing....)

    ReplyDelete
  20. mwahahah, I recognize that kind of 'pleasure from getting annoyed by trivialities' like reading those fashion news on the newspaper!! WTF white trainers and tan tights!!
But you look gloriously elegant and gorgeous, your massive topknot is übercool and your pretty maxi has a fabulous print!, love your bijouterie too!
So Fabulous that we get so much pleasure from all that annoying stuff! mwahaha!

  21. At my school you could either wear navy knee socks or american tan tights once you got to the third year. I wore navy socks until I was 18!

  22. Bahahaha, and you just know some sad saps will be frantically pulling on their American Tan Tights and trainers this very minute!!!!
Jeez, I'm lucky if I was my hair once a week....as for the hair brush, only the front part sees it most of the time. I'm VERY lazy.
Yeah, if it's OUT, I feel it's very much IN for me! And if I like what's currently in, I wait until it's out and score large at the opshops! Feck being in the pack. How very tedious!
This frock is scrumptious!!! Love the frilly bits, perfect for dribbling one's lunchtime cocktail on!!!

  23. Uhrgh, American tan??????? I had to buy American tan tights when I was in High Society! Nasty! I much prefer the Vix way. Wish I could do my hair. I'm shockingly bad at it! X

    ReplyDelete
  24. I did not know what American tan was until just now. As for the trainers, I don't mind them. I wear them every so often when I can't be arsed with the heels :)
I agree with the buns, as a new member of the bun community (I've nearly always had hairstyles that are too short) I'm all for it! Plus I find that it's quite flattering for me! And of course it's very flattering on you too x

    ReplyDelete
  25. You go girl! Why follow the flock? I love the dress, but I was convinced it was two separate pieces!

    ReplyDelete
  26. You ARE "IN." To me- and I can't relate a bit to the hot section of a newspaper. Be your own trend- I wish I had the hair to wear that shamepuff. you rock!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ha ha ! American tan tights! They were always positively even more weird on my ' mixed race' legs when I was growing up . Love your outfit , just wish I could wear heels plagued with problem feet aarghhhh! X

    ReplyDelete
  28. I've never heard it called a shame puff but that's hysterical. And American Tan Tights? I can only imagine that you are speaking of panty hose and I couldn't agree more. They are unnatural and horrible. I'm glad you are against them too.

  29. What a tonic you are. I find 'The Measure' ridiculous too, or rather, I read it and laugh. I seem to recall my mum telling me that American Tan was just about the only shade available in the late 70s. It sounds orangey-grim, so I'll definitely be giving that a miss. And trainers are for exercising in (in my book), and even then, mine are second hand and gold metallic.
Great up-do bun and wonderful skirt.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I always thought the bun was in! but who cares right? As for tan thights, i was wondering what the heck it was? and they are uggly that's for sure - As far as trainers, i don't like the ones in The Measure but give me a pink fluo cut sneakers and i will wear it!

But you are right, you don't have to follow trends, you wear what pleases you i say - And you my lovely is a master at wearing what pleases you! You are looking your wonderful self!

    Hugs

  32. American Tan tights? really? Good god!
Mind you I was in H&M today and they had banana print leggings the world has gone mad.....

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh Vix I am out with you sweet...... The last week or so I have been wearing a high donut bun too!!!! Yay to being out of fashion.
    As for the tights........and sneakers.....yucky.
Oh you should hear me in the shops looking at the modern crap.......it's just rubbish. I feel so lucky to realise that for a fraction of the price I can wear a vintage piece that is beautiful and quality.
    Sending happiness your way.

  40. Vix a great post, yes I like being a grumpy lady too, I'm always rolling my eyes to the ceiling at some of the fashion advice of what's in and what's not frankly it gets on my nerves !,if I want to wear a donut bun in my hair I'm going to, I love a good old bun in my hair.
I love your outfit you look gorgeous and your bun is just wonderful!, thank you for your lovely comment you left on my last post it meant a lot to me ,xxxxx.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I bet you are adorable even when you are grumpy. :)) You are just such a Your Own Woman - you can only laugh on all these advises... or get grumpy, I guess. :) I love your look. Beautiful! Earrings, the dress, your hair - everything. I'd do a bun myself - but you know my hair. Maybe I can just have a sock full of stuff on my head. :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. If it suit me, I'd wear my hair in the biggest bun I could make it too! I am trying to wash my hair less as in not everyday and suffering but I know it will be better...I blame the American tan tights thing on one Catherine of Cambridge except she doesn't have much choice - Royal Protocol and all :-) Have no idea what they have against a hair bun! You look gorgeous! xx

    ReplyDelete
  43. "American Tan"??? Lolzzz That's a funny description. We usually call 'em nude pantyhose!
I loveeeeee sneakers!!! I just wish they were't so pricey. That's what I like to dance in :)
    Big buns 4evahhhhh!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I had to google "American Tan Tights" to know just exactly what we are dealing with here. Yep ... we call them nude pantyhose ... and I don't think I've owned a pair since 1992.
As for trainers ... I'm sure they have their place ... like when you're training for something ... but surely they don't suggest wearing them with a pretty summer dress? or a cocktail dress? or a business suit?
Hhhmmpphh ... I'm getting grumpier by the second ;0)

  46. Oh I know the feeling and The Measure has always pissed me off. Who's frickin' measuring? American Tan...do us a favour. I used to tell my gran off for wearing them!
I love a big bun...they sort me right out since I'm a lazy cow when it comes to doing my hair and the bigger the better. The girls all wear huge ones at school and they make me smile. So do you.
    Loves ya, gorgeous.

  47. I've disliked the 'hot or not' concept since I was in my teens. I think what riles me the most is the way these articles (can you even call them that) are written, with an ever-present belittling tone. Like a bunch of mean-ass girls in the schoolyard telling you that you are not good enough because you are not wearing this or you are wearing that. In recent years I've become a lot less anti-trend (as long as they are good ones) but sometimes I wonder what flipping tripping magicians hat these people use to pull some of these “hot” things out of?! I’m not an inhabitant of planet fashion as these jokers nor would I ever want to be if it meant I had to wear butt ugly Stan Smiths (or rapist trainers as I call them) and frumpy granny tights. And, oh, I must mind to pawn all my heirloom jewellery so that I can pay for my Rihanna style shopping spree at Claire’s…RIDICULARSE!
You keep on rocking the supersized doughnut-shaped topknot Vix cause these cretins obviously haven’t a clue about true style…”Harsh, but true!”

  48. I had a bun yesterday, with a flower. And my shoes were flat but they had rhinestones all over!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well, I love my trainers, so there.

And I saw a lady at the Tate last week wearing amazing psychedelic-ish pink+green trainers that totally made me think of your clothes... (plus, she was in her 70s and wearing an awesomely loud geometric print jacket in similar colours, she looked great) I think you could totally rock a pair of psychedelic pink+green trainers, so never say never :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. lol.....I feel the same way about Croc's I will never ever own or wear a pair! You look fab as a grumpy lady!

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'm a hairstylist and I can assure you a glamorous topknot bun will NEVER go out of style. It's a classic. My darling you look downright demure! Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  52. One bonus for me after I had to give up running is that my feet can now do just fine in heels. I also like not having to wear squishy supporting soles. But I think I'd kill myself in those shoes!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Could this be true? Are we really becoming grumpy old women? Because I agree with you on every single point of complaint you have and more! I seem to relish tut-tutting at shoddiness, high prices (especially in op shops!) and dog poo. Isn't it odd? We're happier living in our skin than we probably were about 20 years ago, yet we have more to complain about and enjoy doing so! Haaaa! Oh Vix I thought of your dear late Mum and her bath plug necklace when I was wearing my alarm clock yesterday ;) xoxoxooxxoxoxo

    ReplyDelete
  54. Vix you rock, unfashionable top knot and all. That Guardian column annoys the crap out of me too. Trainers and american tights are hot are they? What sort of hipster nonsense is that? American tan tights are not and never will be fashionable. I slightly prefer them to being cold if I have to wear a short dress that doesn't suit black tights but I do not feel fashionable or good wearing them - in fact they are often such a bad match for my skin colour that I feel like a walking cadaver. Ditto trainers - needs musts sometimes when you have to run for the tube in the morning but I can't say I feel I'm working a "look".

    ReplyDelete
  55. I adore you. What else can I say. Those articles are so very silly. Really, it's just a way to justify someone's job. American tan tights? What in the hell are those?!!! I love your look here, and even though I know you don't wear black very often, you look gorgeous. I'm a total sucker for black as a base color, with other colors added on.

I also LOVE the whole top-knot look which you wear so wonderfully. Rant on, and look fab doing it. XXOO

    ReplyDelete
  56. We have EARNED the right to be discerning! Oh yes we have. And no little snotty nosed fashion victim is going to tell us what we can and can't wear. I'm sitting here in America wondering who in the world would even want to wear tan tights. A scam by the pantyhose industry no doubt. And as for shoes....I'm still not able to wear "real" shoes yet but when I can I will make up for lost time. You are looking long and elegant and not even a little bit grumpy.

    ReplyDelete
  57. "American tan tights"? What the heck? Never heard 'em called that before! Did they originate in the States? If so---I'm sorry, ha ha!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hey Vix. This post was so funny. I totally feel that way in my early 40's I'm feistier and much more critical. Oh gosh what's hot or not is a joke...its bad enough designers pick models who look like a skinny 15 year old boy! I adore buns and I think you look gorgeous in one. You are so stylish sister!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Tan tights how can ever be in style?!? Only old women who waitress into their 50's wear them!!

Your dress on the other hand is fresh on you I love the colors and print, you can tell all those blindly following trends just by how you dress that you are your own trend. I love ya Vix and I think your style rocks this world of ours big time.
    Xxxxxooooo

  60. Ah, it's a different look for you, but the same spitfire personality! It's nice to be able to cloak it in the Grumpy Old Woman mantle when you see what all those young dipshits are up to. I hate to think that they all believe that stuff.

Lovely outfit - such a chic silhouette - and I love your hair!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Bad manners and spelling mistakes get me ranting. As for American Tan tights they always have and always will look shite.
Trainers are for sport...end of. I'm currently sporting a doughnut bun....sleep is more important than hairwashing
between 12hr shifts! Love that stunning dress, you are so elegant and chic. I wonder if those journalists at The Guardian are. Xxxxx

  62. I don't like to be told 'whats hot & whats not', everyone should decide by himself/herself. I don't even read this section in mags anymore. I love my bun which i wear on a daily basis and when someone says its 'out' i so DON'T care... I also avoid blogs where the newest high priced fashion is shown. I must be dull to spend my hard earned money for labels. I better save it for vacations.
I've read your sock bun tutorial, its genius!
So yes i prefer to be 'out' too, haha!
    xx Tani
PS: I've read to get creases out of a leather coat by hanging it in a warm place in summer (for some hours) Maybe it helps, i'll try it.

  66. Feck me Vix! I love your outfit!! you are just totally gorgeous! I remember American Tan tights, in our school they were our official fancy performing wear (choirs etc)I don't buy any newspapers anymore, I found myself quite grumpy and arguing with an article haha!! I miss the horoscopes though! that's my kind of crap! and recipe's that I never cook, what's that all about?! haha x x x

    ReplyDelete
  67. you look way to fabulous for them anyway! so you go do you buns and colours and they can be miserable with nanna tights with their sneakers. they meant that we should wear them together right???

We have the same dribble in our papers as well. I popped over to that website and noticed in the 'not' section "Necks Nicely hidden during London Fashion Week, where turtlenecks prevailed."
Well duh! this is for Autumn/Winter fashion week for later this year!!!

I sometimes think Fashion reviews for newspapers are delegated to either the most fuddy-duddy person in the office, or the person who doesn't even know what month it is! gah!

I love you skirt though. its a fabulous pattern! xo

    ReplyDelete
  68. Haha , you made me laugh Vix !!
    Totally agree with you ...
Not later than today , someone asked me if I was going to keep my very long hair till the grave !The hell I will !Why should we cut our hair once we reach some fatal age frontier !?!To enrich the hairdresser's , that's for sure !
But receiving a huge amount of compliments on my unique style , my long hair and so on is extremely gratifying and encourages me to keep on with dressing up ...
By the way , the elegant lace blouse suits you damn well !In my honoust opinion , even if you don't wear black very often , you could easily wear black skirts , combined with bright colours ...It's all up to you ...
And your earrings , wow , they're just gorgeous !!

    ~ Magical greetings ~

  70. I red 'The Measure' as some kind of satire, surely they're poking fun at the people who actually make those assertions (black is in, white is out etc)? And I don't need a paper, a style editor or whoever to tell me what to wear and what not to wear! ~ LittleMissPlump (Sara)

  74. Sadly the Guardian fashion team is far from alone in having lapses in fashion taste. In addition to the many clueless individuals reporting on fashion, some of the biggest names in the fashion industry don't know when colours are clashing and have less artistic taste than the average homeless wino passed out on the sidewalks (I'll refrain from mentioning names). Sorry for the rant.
The feminine lacy detail at the sleeves and neckline of your dress is exquisite! I love the look of your outfit.

  75. Wow.

You really remind me of Jessica Pare from MadMen in this... like you stepped right out of the late 1960's.

You look so fantastic with your hair up and long dangly earrings.

Every dress you wear is better than the last. I love the colours and that little bow accent. Your closet has to be a vintage lover's nirvana.

I think you are like me, I don't care for anyone who tells me I can't do something.

Besides...just wait for 10 minutes to pass and then it'll be back "in" on their lists.

  83. Love the entire look! I'm on the same boat, will not read fashion mags and follow religiously, if anything seeing everyone do the same trend at once like a hive mind makes it very unpleasant. Much better to always wear exactly what we feel good in, not what the world dictates.

  86. I'm with Ariane and Becky: being North American, I have no idea what American Tan tights are, though I gather that their cultural equivalent is uncool. I'll have to look that feature up and see if I can access it online. Sounds like a hoot. You look fabulous - love the dress, dangly earrings and top bun! Xo

  87. That article also said that coffee was on the way out because "fashion types" now e-mail each other wanting to go out for juice. Right, something we've been thriving on since the fifteenth century is now suddenly out of style because of the electronic communication of a few trend-obsessed twits?

  88. Grumpy? I consider your insightful. Old? I think you are only a year or two around my age and you are a seasoned critic of all the mass-produced crap. I totally agree with you. Sneakers and tan tights sounds hideous. On the other hand your top with frills and the maxi skirt are supremely stylish and I wish I could wear heels as high as those blue ones.

  90. great post!
i don't need a news paper to find out that i'm 'old' or officially out of fashion ... i just have to look around ... when i watch all these kids here in the streets of berlin wearing black, super tight pants egg shaped layered tops and flat lace booties or big platform sneakers ... guys wear a long beard the girls wear a bun in the middle of their heads, some guys as well.... i feel like i'm back in the 80s ... the smiths and the cure are on tour together ... ... i'm old and i look different, like i always did. actually, nothing has changed. :)

    your bun looks so fantastic!!!!
