Menswear - Jon & His Vintage Wardrobe

From teenage punk, pin-up boy to Madchester shoegazer, Jon's always been into his clothes.

Some looks more successful than others.

But even in the heady days of rock stardom it was secondhand all the way, baby.

A man's gotta to get his priorities right, less cash spent on clothes meant more left for The Haçienda (Watch 24 Hour Party People if you don't know what I'm talking about).

You're already familiar with mine so it's high time Jon shared a few of his vintage finds.

Check out his customised coat rack - a fusion of stuff from jumble sales
Living in the UK we're in coats & jackets for most of the year so it makes sense to have a few to choose from.

1959 British Army greatcoat, West German leather trench (bought off Birmingham Rag Market in the 1980s), Hardy Amies fake fur car coat, Dhobi cashmere coat (my Grandpa's), Foster Menswear vinyl car coat, Hardy Amies fake fur.
He'd started to lose the will to live after snapping a few of them.

Lee 1970s deadstock cord blazer, 1960s fringed suedette jacket, Unworn seersucker Paul Smith blazer, 1970s linen safari jacket, 1960s frock coat & a 1970s tweed blazer.

From left: Austin Reed tweed number, unnamed 1960s, Diesel Black Gold collection (all charity shops)

Waistcoats are sexy.

Cravats are cool, too.

No man's wardrobe is complete without a groovy scarf.

All Tootal except the Etro one (50p from a car boot sale) on the right.

Like any right-minded man, Jon's not afraid to embrace colour.

Pink being his favourite.

Indian-made cheesecloth hoodie

Here's some of his 1960s knits:

And a few of his favourite shirts.

Orange and brown psychedelic number courtesy of sexilicious Helga
We've noticed that it's usually women who spoil their men's fun, nagging them to put psychedelic shirts and loud jackets back and to "grow up" when they visit our stall at vintage fairs. Listen up men, any woman who dictates how you should dress needs to be dumped.

Here's Jon's Tips For Successful Second-hand Shopping:

1. Try It On
Despite what some might say, decent vintage menswear isn't hard to come by, finding the right size is. If it doesn't fit walk away and leave it for someone else (me!).

Too bastard big!
2. Never Say Never
Find something in your size but isn't something you'd normally wear - tuxedo, a tailcoat or a flashy suit? Buy it. One day the right occasion will come along and you'll be ready without needing to run round the shops in a mad panic (and bankrupting yourself in the process).

One day, one day...
1960s Aquascutum suit ready for that fancy pants invite
These bad boys might be making their debut soon

3. Take A Risk
Perfect fit, great price but a bit tatty? There's little that can't be slung in the washing machine on a delicate setting or spot cleaned with some Poundland stain remover or white vinegar. Don't miss an exceptional pair of shoes if the soles have gone. Our cobbler charges £15 for a complete resole, definitely worth it if the shoes are spectacular.

At just 50p, I'd be mad not to get them fixed

4. Sew What?
Learn to replace buttons & zips, darn holes and fix ripped seams. Make straight jeans into skinnies, shorten legs and turn knackered trousers into shorts and you'll save loads. There's no shame in knowing your way with a needle. Running to your mother/wife/girlfriend every time you need something mending is a lot less manly.

Handmade by me from a moth-eaten tweed jacket, an Italian army jacket and a few zips
...and here it is in action.
5. Be Your Own Man
Fancy labels and following trends are for idiots who don't know their own minds. Don't be dictated to by girlfriends or no-mark celebrities. Haters can f*ck right off. Wear what you like, never dress to please.

Got a bloke with no interest in clothes? Leave him be and get yourself a Barbie doll to play dress up with. You'd be outraged if a man tried to change you so why is the reverse seen as acceptable?

See you soon!

PS Updated to link Jon's latest second-hand purchase, the R Soles boots he's wearing in the top photo, to Bella's Shoe Shine.

  4. Oh I agree totally. The other day I saw a couple in an op shop and each one had to get the other's approval before they bought anything. How boring is that? Life's no fun unless you take a few risks and find your own style.

  5. Go Jon! Great post. Get those shorts on ~ photos please! ;)

  6. Haha! This is great, really made me chuckle. Good to see things from a male perspective. I am very impressed by that hybrid jacket you made, it's pretty amazing and looks great on. I like to see a man dressed with personality, it shows confidence.
Those bad boy shorts (the red and blue stripy ones) shout my dad! He had an orange pair. That Aquascutum suit looks beautiful as does that linen safari jacket. I'm going to stop making a list, it's all too nice. Your wardrobe is amazing Jon! Thanks for sharing it. xx

  7. I don't know where to start!! Jon is a true icon and I'd love to steal some of his secrets for me!I'm one of those persons who thinks that style is innate and you can't force your partner to dress up like a doll if he feels better in jeans and t-shirts!I worked in a menswear shop and I was surprised at how many wives and mothers had the will to use their partners / sons as reclutant mannequins!I felt so sorry for them...
I really love all the coats, especially the military one and the fake furs, the shirts are wonderful and my favourite piece is the Italian army jacket reloaded, stunning!
I really enjoy reading this post and have a closer look at Jon's wardrobe and at his personality!
Love to you and Jon xxxxx

  8. I do like to ask what other people think when I've found something I like in a shop, but I think it's just out of politeness; if I like it, I'll be buying it anyway. And vice versa; just because I don't like a leather jacket he's found doesn't mean he shouldn't buy it if he wants to.

  9. Ahhh you and Jon are so perfect for each other: both utterly vintagetastic and amazing.

Must admit I didn't recognise him with hair in those first photos though!

  10. I loved reading this post! Jon is one hunk a spunk, & he oozes such individual style. I love the jackets, vests, polo knits & shirts, not to mention the shoes. Sometimes our blokes need a little encouragement to think outside the square fashion wise. I love the fact that the Captain is getting more adventurous with his style. Thanks for sharing Jon! Xx

  11. Brilliant post Jon has an amazing choice of clothes. Love those swimming shorts I got John into that style when we went on our honeymoon he liked them but wasn't sure he had the confidence but hey he looked amazing and after a while he felt it to as he was different to everyone else, he said they were him. He is just starting to find out who he is and what he likes and that is a fun journey to be part of. I think its easier for women we know what we like and have more confidence to change. You and Jon are a very stylish couple. dee xxx

  13. magnificent stuff! Jon's wardrobe is fab, the ringmaster jacket is just awesome, and I am very fond of the waistcoats and cravats too! Chazza's are the best place for 'special outfits' too, my Dad's tux came out the charity shop, he seems to wear it a lot! x x x

    ReplyDelete
  14. Adore his shoes in the first photograph and I love the colour and shape too.

  15. What a fab wardrobe John has! Its so good to see men vintage - so much of it gets swept away by all the pretty dresses for ladies. And i agree - let the bloody men dress as they like! unless they're a complete dag...

  16. "Waistcoats are sexy"

Wise words! Love this post, far too few men blogging about vintage fashion out there. Some lovely finds there as well!

  18. Fantastic post! As others have said you two really are match made in heaven.

Some of the coats I remember my dad wearing and he was always very dapper. Made me smile thinking of him, thank you.

Very good advice for the ladies too, don't dress your, man let him be him. After all surely thats who you feel for in the first place right?

  21. There is NOTHING like a Dapper Man who OWNS IT. My Dapper Man can work a charity shop and has the stalking skills required for eBay - so now wears Gieves & Hawkes suits, Harris tweeds, and Loake brogues - he is RUINED. Why buy chain store when you can buy a Versace suit (£1200 in the SALE are you MAD???) for £12.50? He doesn't give a jot for labels but likes gentlemanly clothes in beautiful fabrics. (Hello Dior cashmere and lambswool overcoat for £20.00). But you've got to take care of your charity shop karma - good stuff in - good stuff out.

Jon is an inspiration. I could never figure out the dress-your-man thing; I'm an enabler if anything LMAO!

  22. FAB-ulous post - it's great fun to see into Jon's closet and get his advice. My husband will be reading this! Wow Jon was, and is, a pin-up indeed. xox

  24. What a cool post it was great to hear a different perspective on clothes and the male opinion.

I think you always look well turned out and your own man.

My other half has no real interest in clothes these days apart from the practical side. And its funny because he like to hear my opinion on what he's buying I am honest if I like or don't like something but it is always his choice. Its funny but its something I have never really thought about before!

Love the made over jacket too really cool.

  27. Wow! Jon's wardrobe almost rivals yours. He looks so darn cool in his confidently worn vintage. I like the idea of having clothes in reserve, "just in case" --justifies much of what I own :).

  28. Jon's a legend, who clearly need his own blog (or at the very least a regular spot on yours, Vix!)
I love it all, love Jon's thrifty, mend it and recycle, stylish, colourful, take a risk approach! Just brilliant. And so many really top quality things too - Hardy Amies, Paul Smith and Aquascutum, nice!
Give him a big hug from me, tell him he'll always be a total Rock Star, and to get that red tail coat worn asap!xxxxxxxxx

  33. FABULOUS!!! I'm in awe at Jon's fantastic wardrobe and marvelous taste (he's with you Vix so that he has freakin' amazing taste is obvious!!)

Some men like Jon, Helga's G-man, and SheilaEphemera's "L" are natural peacocks. They have the style and confidence to wear ANYTHING.

My Lauren is a sparrow--he's only comfortable in plain styles and colors--altho I have managed to get him to wear brighter colored shirts. But his ensemble usually consist of khaki pants, knit polo shirt (short sleeve or long-but now in bright colors) and a V-neck flat knit pullover sweater in cold weather.

The sparrow guys are needed so the peacock guys can stand out even more!!!

  34. Fabulous post. Jon is stylish and brilliant, like you Vix. A perfect partnership!

I love your advice (Wear what you like, never dress to please, and Listen up men, any woman who dictates how you should dress needs to be dumped.) and Jon's advice (Take A Risk) and seeing a lifelong love of vintage from a man's perspective. THANK YOU for having great taste in men, and for sharing his wardrobe. xo!

  39. Jon was is and always will be ROCK-N-ROLL! Those boots make me a bit mental with how over the top they are, they suit Jon to a friggin T. I know so few men with style so when I see one it's refreshing! The fact that he can do his own mending too, hot dignity DAM!! I also love that he just wears what he wants and that seems to cover a whole lot! That fringed beauty is killer but I really do adore the long sleeve with pink and purple flowers, can you hear me swooning from all the way over here???

Thanks for sharing Jon! I don't wanna change how Chris dresses but I would love someone like you to influence him into a new direction, but like you said I would not want someone to tell me how to dress so I shut it :)

  40. Awesome post. I recently bought The Doctor a 3-piece suit from the 1970's, for $2! He worn it to a wedding and got rave reviews from anyone. I think men sometimes have it harder than women do to "dress right". We get jewelry, hair color, shoes and they get khakis on casual friday. Poor babies.

  41. Fab, you are a unique and stylish pair. I have a few gorgeous Tootal scarves and a Tootal dressing gown, that were my Dads. I love to wear them and remember him. That's the thing with vintage,it also comes with a history and memories.

  51. Love the 60s 'fingertip' jacket! All the lads in Retford in the 60s were still wearing those and crepe soled shoes. Not the money to keep up back in this days.

My beloved isn't up to being dressed, if it ain't navy he doesn't want it! However, I've found some good charity shop shirts he wears regularly so I haven't completely given up hope.

  52. I loved this post - you and Jon are two peas in a pod! He is definitely one of the consistently coolest dressed guys I've ever seen (Helga's G-Star is on the short list too). I can only dream about finding a guy like Jon who loves vintage shopping and wearing waistcoats and cravats. I think if a guy showed up at my door in that red tailcoat, I'd have to marry him ;)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Awesome - just loved this post. Jon has an amazing sense of style and I will definitely be showing my Dear H this post. The selection of jackets and waistcoats was almost too much for me to take in. The red tail coat is quite spectacular - I wonder what he will wear it with???

  54. This is proof, if proof were needed that you were made for each other. I wanted my husband to embrace the Victorian street urchin look a few years ago when Take That were doing it. He was having none of it!

Jon has a wonderful wardrobe. Except for those trunks...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Love practically everything in his wardrobe - and he wears it all so well.

    ReplyDelete
  56. It is fortunate that Jon is of a more "universal" size. I have thrifted some cool stuff for my guy but it is so hard because his size is so odd. He "lets" me buy stuff for him because he's so frustrated when he goes out himself. I drool over some of the menswear I see in all the wrong sizes -- but sometimes I buy that for myself!

    ReplyDelete
  57. When Himself and I first started going out you wouldn't believe the number of people, including his own sister, who complimented me on improving his dress sense! They all assumed I had taken on the buying his clothes, but I hadn't. I just happily went shopping with him and whilst I will admit I did guide him away from one or two hideous shirts I otherwise just gave him the encouragement to go for it and then left him to it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Jon is one snappy dresser. You're right about not changing your man - my hubby was so sick of wearing a suit for years working in the jewellery trade that now he wears nothing but jeans and Abercrombie & Fitch hoodies. I'm not a fan but hey, I have fun dressing Adam - that is until he wants to dress himself! Xo

It's somewhat easier to get decent menswear in thrift stores, much less in consignment. But the quality is still low ... and lots from the very elderly ( okay, recently deceased is more accurate.)
And Dan's size is a lot easier to find, as he is a regular sized person!

I so wish I could get Dan into vintage, he used to wear a few vintage shirts, but now its just jeans and tees. Although he does look so handsome in his tux when he has a mason meeting. (Plus I got him cool McQueen skull cufflinks -- back when I was working & could afford it!) and skull stud buttons so at least he does it with some style, as everyone always comments on how "cool" it is and unlikely to see with a tux!
